Abstract:Consider the solutions $u$ to the elliptic equation $\mathcal{L}(u) = \partial_i(a^{ij}(x) \partial_j u) + b^i(x) \partial_i u + c(x) u= 0$ with $a^{ij}$ assumed only to be Hölder continuous. In this paper we prove an explicit bound for $(n-2)$-dimensional Minkowski estimates of singular set $\mathcal{S}(u) = \{ x \in B_1 : u(x) = |\nabla u(x)| = 0\}$ and critical set $\mathcal{C}(u) \equiv \{ x\in B_{1} : |\nabla u(x)| = 0 \}$ in terms of the bound on doubling index, depending on $c \equiv 0$ or not. Here the Hölder assumption is sharp as it is the weakest condition in order to define the critical set of $u$ according to elliptic estimates. We can also obtain an optimal improvement on Cheeger-Naber-Valtorta's volume estimates on each quantitative stratum $\mathcal{S}^k_{\eta, r}$. The main difficulty in this situation is the lack of monotonicity formula which is essential to the quantitative stratification. In our proof, one key ingredient is a new almost monotonicity formula for doubling index under the Hölder assumption. Another key ingredient is the quantitative uniqueness of tangent maps. It deserves to note that our almost monotonicity is sufficient to address all the difficulties arising from the absence of monotonicity in the analysis of differential equations. We believe the idea could be applied to other relevant study.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relation between the boundary geometricproperties and the boundary regularity of the solutions of elliptic equations.We prove by a new unified method the pointwise boundary Hölder regularityunder proper geometric conditions. "Unified" means that our method isapplicable for the Laplace equation, linear elliptic equations in divergenceand non-divergence form, fully nonlinear elliptic equations, the p-Laplaceequations and the fractional Laplace equations etc. In addition, thesegeometric conditions are quite general. In particular, for local equations, themeasure of the complement of the domain near the boundary point concerned couldbe zero. The key observation in the method is that the strong maximum principleimplies a decay for the solution, then a scaling argument leads to theHölder regularity. Moreover, we also give a geometric condition, whichguarantees the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation.The geometric meaning of this condition is more apparent than that of theWiener criterion.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the behavior of solutions bounded from below to degenerate elliptic equations with lower order terms in unbounded cylinders which vanish at the boundary. After establishing the weak maximum principle, the weak Harnack inequality for supersolutions, the boundary Hölder continuity and the boundary Harnack principles under suitable assumptions regarding the lower order terms of the operator, we obtain structure theorems in unbounded cylinders.

We assume that $f \in L^r(\Omega)$ with $r>N/p$. The feature of this study is the inclusion of a possibly singular gradient-dependent term $\Psi(u,\nabla u)=\sum_{j=1}^N |u|^{\theta_j-2}u\, |\partial_j u|^{q_j}$, where $\theta_j>0$ and $0\leq q_j<p_j$ for $1\leq j\leq N$. The existence of such weak solutions is contained in a recent paper by the authors.

Abstract:A well-known boundary observability inequality for the elasticity system establishes that the energy of the system can be estimated from the solution on a sufficiently large part of the boundary for a sufficiently large time. This inequality is relevant in different contexts as the exact boundary controllability, boundary stabilization, or some inverse source problems. Here we show that a corresponding boundary observability inequality for the spectral collocation approximation of the linear elasticity system in a d-dimensional cube also holds, uniformly with respect to the discretization parameter. This property is essential to prove that natural numerical approaches to the previous problems based on replacing the elasticity system by collocation discretization will give successful approximations of the continuous counterparts.

Abstract:We investigate an arbitrary regular elliptic boundary-value problem given in a bounded Euclidean domain with infinitely smooth boundary. We prove that the operator of the problem is bounded and Fredholm in appropriate pairs of Hörmander inner product spaces. They are parametrized with the help of an arbitrary radial function RO-varying at infinity and form the extended Sobolev scale. We establish a priori estimates for solutions to the problem and investigate their local regularity on this scale. We find new sufficient conditions for generalized partial derivatives of the solutions to be continuous.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Dirichlet problem for real-valued second order divergence form elliptic operators with boundary data in Hölder spaces. Our context is that of open sets $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n \ge 2$, satisfying the capacity density condition, without any further topological assumptions. Our main result states that if $\Omega$ is either bounded, or unbounded with unbounded boundary, then the corresponding Dirichlet boundary value problem is well-posed; when $\Omega$ is unbounded with bounded boundary, we establish that solutions exist, but they fail to be unique in general. These results are optimal in the sense that solvability of the Dirichlet problem in Hölder spaces is shown to imply the capacity density condition. As a consequence of the main result, we present a characterization of the Hölder spaces in terms of the boundary traces of solutions, and obtain well-posedness of several related Dirichlet boundary value problems. All the results above are new even for 1-sided chord-arc domains, and can be extended to generalized Hölder spaces associated with a natural class of growth functions.

Abstract:We show that if $u$ is a solution to a linear elliptic differential equation of order $2m\geq 2$ in the half-space with $t$-independent coefficients, and if $u$ satisfies certain area integral estimates, then the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values of $u$ exist and lie in a Lebesgue space $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ or Sobolev space $\dot W^p_{\pm 1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Even in the case where $u$ is a solution to a second order equation, our results are new for certain values of~$p$.

Abstract:We consider vector-valued elliptic boundary value problems and parabolic initial-boundary value problems on abstract Banach spaces of class HT . For a very general class of boundary conditions, which includes, but is not limited to the classical cases of Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, we show L p -maximal regularity of the system. We do not restrict ourselves to the homogeneous case, but also identify the temporal and boundary trace spaces, which are both sufficient and necessary to obtain a unique solution in the L p -maximal regularity space. Our results are based on a (partial) Fourier–Laplace transform of the problem in the half-space case, leading to elliptic boundary value problems which have to satisfy variants of the Lopatinskii–Shapiro condition [34] to be solvable. The parabolic theory is then developed with use of tools from modern harmonic analysis such as the bounded H ∞ -calculus and the Kalton–Weis theorem.
