Abstract:We study the boundedness and convergence to equilibrium of weak solutions to reaction-diffusion systems with nonlinear diffusion. The nonlinear diffusion is of porous medium type and the nonlinear reaction terms are assumed to grow polynomially and to dissipate (or conserve) the total mass. By utilising duality estimates, the dissipation of the total mass and the smoothing effect of the porous medium equation, we prove that if the exponents of the nonlinear diffusion terms are high enough, then weak solutions are bounded, locally Hölder continuous and their $L^{\infty}(\Omega)$-norm grows in time at most polynomially. In order to show convergence to equilibrium, we consider a specific class of nonlinear reaction-diffusion models, which describe a single reversible reaction with arbitrarily many chemical substances. By exploiting a generalised Logarithmic Sobolev Inequality, an indirect diffusion effect and the polynomial in time growth of the $L^{\infty}(\Omega)$-norm, we show an entropy entropy-production inequality which implies exponential convergence to equilibrium in $L^p(\Omega)$-norm, for any $1\leq p < \infty$, with explicit rates and constants.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 3, Page 3004-3041, June 2024. This paper concerns the physical behaviors of any solutions to the one-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations for viscous and heat conductive gases with constant viscosities and heat conductivity for fast decaying density at far fields only. First, it is shown that the specific entropy becomes not uniformly bounded immediately after the initial time, as long as the initial density decays to vacuum at the far field at the rate not slower than [math] with [math]. Furthermore, for faster decaying initial density, i.e., [math], a sharper result is discovered that the absolute temperature becomes uniformly positive at each positive time, no matter whether it is uniformly positive or not initially, and consequently the corresponding entropy behaves as [math] at each positive time, independent of the boundedness of the initial entropy. Such phenomena are in sharp contrast to the case with slowly decaying initial density of the rate no faster than [math], for which our previous works [J. Li and Z. Xin, Adv. Math., 361 (2020), 106923; Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 75 (2022), pp. 2393–2445; Sci. China Math., 66 (2023), pp. 2219–2242] show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy can be propagated for all positive time and thus the temperature decays to zero at the far field. These give a complete answer to the problem concerning the propagation of uniform boundedness of the entropy for the heat conductive ideal gases and, in particular, show that the algebraic decay rate 2 of the initial density at the far field is sharp for the uniform boundedness of the entropy. The tools to prove our main results are based on some scaling transforms, including the Kelvin transform, and a Hopf type lemma for a class of degenerate equations with possible unbounded coefficients.

Abstract:We prove that there exists an interval of time which is uniform in the vanishing viscosity limit and for which the Navier–Stokes equation with the Navier boundary condition has a strong solution. This solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and has only one normal derivative bounded in L∞. This allows us to obtain the vanishing viscosity limit to the incompressible Euler system from a strong compactness argument.

Abstract:Uniform bounds are obtained using the auxiliary Monge-Ampère equation method for solutions of very general classes of fully non-linear partial differential equations, assuming the existence of a ${C}$-subsolution in the sense of G. Székelyhidi and B. Guan. The main advantage over previous estimates is in the Kähler case, where the new estimates remain uniform as the background metric is allowed to degenerate.

Abstract:We prove the large time behavior of solutions to a coupled thermo-diffusion arising in the modelling of the motion of hot colloidal particles in porous media. Additionally, we also ensure the uniqueness of solutions of the target problem. The main mathematical difficulty is due to the presence in the right-hand side of the equations of products between temperature and concentration gradients. Such terms mimic the so-called thermodynamic Soret and Dufour effects. These are cross-coupling terms emphasizing in this context a strong interplay between heat conduction and molecular diffusion.

Abstract:We establish the boundedness of solutions of reaction-diffusion systems with quadratic (in fact slightly super-quadratic) reaction terms that satisfy a natural entropy dissipation property, in any space dimension N>2. This bound imply the smoothness of the solutions. This result extends the theory which was restricted to the two-dimensional case. The proof heavily uses De Giorgi's iteration scheme, which allows us to obtain local estimates. The arguments rely on duality reasonings in order to obtain new estimates on the total mass of the system, both in $L^{(N+1)/N}$ norm and in a suitable weak norm. The latter uses $C^\alpha$ regularization properties for parabolic equations.

Abstract:The goal of this work is to establish the global existence of nonnegative classical solutions in all dimensions for a system of highly nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations. We address the case for different diffusion coefficients and the system of reversible reactions with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The systems are assumed to satisfy only the mass control condition and to have locally Lipschitz nonlinearities with arbitrary growth. The key aspect of this work is that we didn't assume that the diffusion coefficients are close to each other. We utilize the duality method and the regularization of the heat operator to derive the result. We also illustrate the global in time bounds for the solutions. The application includes concrete corrosion in sewer pipes or sulfate corrosion in sewer pipes.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional semilinear parabolic equation with exponential gradient source and provide a complete classification of large time behavior of the classical solutions: either the space derivative of the solution blows up in finite time with the solution itself remaining bounded or the solution is global and converges in C-1 norm to the unique steady state. The main difficulty is to prove C-1 boundedness of all global solutions. To do so, we explicitly compute a nontrivial Lyapunov's functional by carrying out the method of Zelenyak.

Abstract:Estimates on the asymptotic behaviour of solution to linear integro-differential equations are fundamental in understanding the dynamics occuring in many nonlocal evolution problems. They are usually derived by using precise decay estimates on the heat kernel of the considered diffusion process. In this note, we show that for some generic jump diffusion and particular initial data, one can derive a lower bound of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution using a simple PDE argument. This is viewed as an independant preliminary brick to study invasion phenomena in nonlinear reaction diffusion problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a uniformly second order numerical method for the discete-ordinate transport equation in the slab geometry in the diffusive regimes with interfaces.At the interfaces, the scattering coefficients have discontinuities, so suitable interface conditions are needed to define the unique solution.We first approximate the scattering coefficients by piecewise constants determined by their cell averages, and then obtain the analytic solution at each cell, using which to piece together the numerical solution with the neighboring cells by the interface conditions.We show that this method is asymptotic-preserving, which preserves the discrete diffusion limit with the correct interface condition.Moreover, we show that our method is quadratically convergent uniformly in the diffusive regime, even with the boundary layers.This is 1) the first sharp uniform convergence result for linear transport equations in the diffusive regime, a problem that involves both transport and diffusive scales; and 2) the first uniform convergence valid up to the boundary even if the boundary layers exist, so the boundary layer does not need to be resolved numerically.Numerical examples are presented to justify the uniform convergence.

Stability of large solutions for full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole spaces

Abstract: The current paper is devoted to the investigation of the global-in-time stability of large solutions for the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the whole space. Suppose that the density and the temperature are bounded from above uniformly in time in the Holder space $C^\alpha$ with $\alpha$ sufficiently small and in $L^\infty$ space respectively. Then we prove two results: (1). Such kind of the solution will converge to its associated equilibrium with a rate which is the same as that for the heat equation if we impose the same condition on the initial data. As a result, we obtain the propagation of positive lower bounds of the density and the temperature. (2). Such kind of the solution is stable, that is, any perturbed solution will remain close to the reference solution if initially they are close to each other. This shows that the set of the smooth and bounded solutions is open.

Abstract:We investigate global bounded solutions of higher regularity to boundary value problems for a general linear nonautonomous first order 1D hyperbolic system in a strip. We establish the existence of such solutions under the assumption of exponential stability and certain dissipativity (or non-resonant) conditions. Our results demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of $C^1$- and $C^2$-bounded solutions, in particular, periodic and almost periodic solutions. The number of imposed dissipativity conditions is related to the regularity of solutions. This connection arises due to the nonautonomous nature of the hyperbolic system under consideration, in contrast to autonomous settings. In the general case of global bounded smooth solutions we assume exponential stability in $H^1$. In the case of periodic solutions, the weaker assumption of $L^2$-exponential stability proves to be sufficient.

Abstract:The asymptotic study of a time-dependent function ƒ as the solution of a differential equation often leads to the question of whether its derivative vanishes at infinity. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for this is that is what may be called asymptotically uniform. We generalize the result to higher order derivatives. We also show that the same property for ƒ itself is also necessary and sufficient for its one-sided improper integrals to exist. The article provides a broad study of such asymptotically uniform functions.

Abstract:We present a general $L_p$-solvability result for the classical heat equation and time-fractional heat equations in non-smooth domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We consider domains $\Omega$ admitting the Hardy inequality: There exists a constant $N>0$ such that $$ \int_{\Omega}\Big|\frac{f(x)}{d(x,\partial\Omega)}\Big|^2\mathrm{d}x\leq N\int_{\Omega}|\nabla f|^2 \mathrm{d} x\quad\text{for any}\quad f\in C_c^{\infty}(\Omega)\,. $$ To illustrate the boundary behavior of solutions in a general framework, we employ a weight system composed of a superharmonic function and a distance function to the boundary. Further, we investigate applications for various non-smooth domains, including convex domains, domains with exterior cone condition, totally vanishing exterior Reifenberg domains, and domains $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ for which the Aikawa dimension of $\Omega^c$ is less than $d-2$. By using superharmonic functions tailored to the geometric conditions of the domain, we derive weighted $L_p$-solvability results for various non-smooth domains, with specific weight ranges that vary by domain condition. In addition, we provide an application for the Hölder continuity of solutions in domains with the volume density condition, and a pointwise estimate for solutions in Lipschitz cones.
