Abstract:Maxwell’s Demon is a thought experiment devised by J. C. Maxwell in 1867 in order to show that the Second Law of thermodynamics is not universal, since it has a counter-example. Since the Second Law is taken by many to provide an arrow of time, the threat to its universality threatens the account of temporal directionality as well. Various attempts to “exorcise” the Demon, by proving that it is impossible for one reason or another, have been made throughout the years, but none of them were successful. We have shown (in a number of publications) by a general state-space argument that Maxwell’s Demon is compatible with classical mechanics, and that the most recent solutions, based on Landauer’s thesis, are not general. In this paper we demonstrate that Maxwell’s Demon is also compatible with quantum mechanics. We do so by analyzing a particular (but highly idealized) experimental setup and proving that it violates the Second Law. Our discussion is in the framework of standard quantum mechanics; we give two separate arguments in the framework of quantum mechanics with and without the projection postulate. We address in our analysis the connection between measurement and erasure interactions and we show how these notions are applicable in the microscopic quantum mechanical structure. We discuss what might be the quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical notion of “macrostates”, thus explaining why our Quantum Demon setup works not only at the micro level but also at the macro level, properly understood. One implication of our analysis is that the Second Law cannot provide a universal lawlike basis for an account of the arrow of time; this account has to be sought elsewhere.

Abstract:The first direct experimental replication of the Maxwell Demon thought experiment is outlined. The experiment determines the velocity/kinetic energy distribution of the particles in a sample by a novel interpretation of the results from a standard time-of-flight (TOF) small angle neutron scattering (SANS) procedure. Perspex at 293 K was subjected to neutrons at 82.2 K. The key result is a TOF velocity distribution curve that is a direct spatial and time-dependent microscopic probe of the velocity distribution of the Perspex nuclei at 293 K. Having this curve, one can duplicate the Demon's approach by selecting neutrons at known kinetic energies. One example is given: namely, two reservoirs -- hot and cold reservoirs -- were generated from the 293 K source without disturbing its original 293 K energy distribution.

Abstract:Maxwell's demon was born in 1867 and still thrives in modern physics. He plays important roles in clarifying the connections between two theories: thermodynamics and information. Here, we present the history of the demon and a variety of interesting consequences of the second law of thermodynamics, mainly in quantum mechanics, but also in the theory of gravity. We also highlight some of the recent work that explores the role of information, illuminated by Maxwell's demon, in the arena of quantum information theory.

Abstract:This paper discusses Maxwell's demon thought experiment. In recent years, there has been extensive research on Maxwell's demon. I first provide a detailed overview of important historical milestones of Maxwell's demon thought experiment. Einstein would often write about both relativity and thermodynamics. In this paper, I first argue that: 1. Einstein spoke of Perpetuum mobile of the second kind (a Maxwell's demon) in the context of the discovery of his relativity theory, the famous chasing a light beam thought experiment, and the contraction of lengths. 2. He would often compare relativity with thermodynamics. 3. When doing so, he would say that perpetual motion machines cannot exist. In the same category, no signal transmission faster than light is possible. 4. Einstein's approach in speaking of the principles of thermodynamics and relativity suggests that he was occupied with "impossibility statements". After discussing the essential aspects of Maxwell's demon and the different ways of excorcising the demon, I examine the role of "impossibility statements" in Maxwell's demon thought experiment.

Abstract:In scenarios coined Maxwell's demon, information on microscopic degrees of freedom is used to seemingly violate the second law of thermodynamics. This has been studied in the classical as well as the quantum domain. In this paper, we study an implementation of Maxwell's demon that can operate in both domains. In particular, we investigate information-to-work conversion over the quantum-to-classical transition. The demon continuously measures the charge state of a double quantum dot, and uses this information to guide electrons against a voltage bias by tuning the on-site energies of the dots. Coherent tunneling between the dots allows for the buildup of quantum coherence in the system. Under strong measurements, the coherence is suppressed, and the system is well-described by a classical model. As the measurement strength is further increased, the Zeno effect prohibits interdot tunneling. A Zeno-like effect is also observed for weak measurements, where measurement errors lead to fluctuations in the on-site energies, dephasing the system. We anticipate similar behaviors in other quantum systems under continuous measurement and feedback control, making our results relevant for implementations in quantum technology and quantum control.

Abstract:Seeking for the proper situation of Emergent Gravity, we recent reveal that the entropic mechanism only happens when extremal surfaces are varied, which is similar to the non-gravitational-bath-coupled setup of the island development. In this paper, we consider perturbing thin shell state outside horizon during equilibrating, to find the evolution of these Euclidean states requires an external force to be $ F_{ex}\propto T_{H}\delta A(\mu_a)$, proportional to area variation of the apparent horizon which could transform into the actual event horizon as extremal surface. We analogize the falling tendency to the 2nd law tendency, and then explore the potential tendency violation of Hawking radiation. This analogy recalls the role of Maxwell's Demon to interpret the mechanism of the bath for the Page curve to emerge in a close universe. It could reconcile the Split Problem concerning quantum gravity raised by Raju.

Abstract:We review the origin and historical evolution of the fundamental concepts regarding Maxwell's demon as well as the latest developments at the frontiers of scientific research derived from the paradox. It is demonstrated from two complementary aspects that information processing is a process that is in essence"entangled"with the concept of Maxwell's demon:(1) A physical system can work more efficiently by acquiring information, and(2) physical laws impose an ultimate limit on the energy dissipation during information processing. Our analysis and clarification of these concepts should promote our understanding of the intrinsic relation between computation processes and the theory of thermodynamics.

Abstract:A Maxwell's demon is a device that gets information and trades it in for thermodynamic advantage, in apparent (but not actual) contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics. Quantum-mechanical versions of Maxwell's demon exhibit features that classical versions do not: in particular, a device that gets information about a quantum system disturbs it in the process. In addition, the information produced by quantum measurement acts as an additional source of thermodynamic inefficiency. This paper investigates the properties of quantum-mechanical Maxwell's demons, and proposes experimentally realizable models of such devices.

Abstract:Here we study the operation efficiency of a finite-size finite-response-time Maxwell's demon, who can make future predictions. We compare the heat and mass transport rate of predictive demons to non-predictive ones and find that predictive demons can achieve higher mass and heat transport rates over longer periods of time. We determine how the demon performance varies with response time, future sight, and the density of the gasses on which they operate.

Abstract:In the past decade several theoretical Maxwell's demon models have been proposed exhibiting effects such as refrigerating, doing work at the cost of information, and some experiments have been done to realise these effects. Here we propose a model with a two level demon, information represented by a sequence of bits, and two heat reservoirs. Which reservoir the demon interact with depends on the bit. If information is pure, one reservoir will be refrigerated, on the other hand, information can be erased if temperature difference is large. Genuine examples of such a system are discussed.

Abstract:Maxwell's demons work by rectifying thermal fluctuations. They are not expected to function at macroscopic scales where fluctuations become negligible and dynamics become deterministic. We propose an electronic implementation of an autonomous Maxwell's demon that indeed stops working in the regular macroscopic limit as the dynamics becomes deterministic. However, we find that if the power supplied to the demon is scaled up appropriately, the deterministic limit is avoided and the demon continues to work. The price to pay is a decreasing thermodynamic efficiency. Our work suggests that novel strategies may be found in nonequilibrium settings to bring to the macroscale non-trivial effects so far only observed at microscopic scales.

Abstract:A simulation has been performed to reveal the detailed dynamics and statistical behavior of a Maxwell demon of the simplest kind, a trap door held over by a spring inside a box filled with gas molecules. The role of such a demon can be controlled by tuning Smoluchowski's fluctuations. When the demon is in thermal equilibrium with the rest of the system, it fails to function as designed, and when it is separately subjected to a thermal bath with a different temperature, it creates a temperature or density gradient between the two chambers of the box it divides. As a Maxwell demon, the trap-door device creates more readily a density gradient than that of temperature.

Abstract:Subsystems of a composite system in a pure state generally exist in mixed states and undergo changes with the overall state. This phenomenon arises from the coherence of the entire system and represents a crucial distinction between quantum and classical systems. Such a quantum property can enhance the work of an Otto heat engine, where two coupled qubits serve as the working substance, allowing situations in which negative work output initially occurred to now yield positive work. We utilize the imagery of Maxwell's demon to explain the reason for positive work in this Otto cycle, attributing it to the increased coherence after the mutual measurement of the two subsystems. Conversely, the quantum measurement-erase cycle typically outputs negative work, attributed to the decoherence of the instrument during the measurement process.

Abstract:An interesting preprint by Puru Gujrati, "Maxwell's Demon Must Remain Subservient to Clausius' Statement" [ of the Second Law of Thermodynamics ], traces the development and application of Maxwell's Demon. He argues against the Demon on thermodynamic grounds. Gujrati introduces and uses his own version of a generalized thermodynamics in his criticism of the Demon. The complexity of his paper and the lack of any accompanying numerical work piqued our curiousity. The internet provides well over two million "hits'' on the subject of "Maxwell's Demon". There are also hundreds of images of the Demon, superimposed upon a container of gas or liquid. However, there is not so much along the lines of simulations of the Demonic process. Accordingly, we thought it useful to write and execute relatively simple FORTRAN programs designed to implement Maxwell's low-density model and to develop its replacement with global Nosé-Hoover or local purely-Newtonian thermal controls. These simulations illustrate the entropy decreases associated with all three types of Demons.

Abstract:A two quantum-dot device is coupled in parallel for studying the competition between the pseudo-spin Kondo effect and strongly hybridized molecular states. Cryogenic measurements are performed in the regime of weak coupling of the two dots to lead states under linear transport conditions. Detailed simulations verify the finding of the transition between the two different regimes.

Abstract:We are emerging from a period of consolidation in particle physics. Its great, historic achievement was to establish the Theory of Matter. This Theory will serve as our description of ordinary matter under ordinary conditions -- allowing for an extremely liberal definition of "ordinary -- for the foreseeable future. Yet there are many indications, ranging from the numerical to the semi-mystical, that a new fertile period lies before us. We will discover compelling evidence for the unification of fundamental forces and for new quantum dimensions (low-energy supersymmetry). We will identify new forms of matter, which dominate the mass density of the Universe. We will achieve much better fundamental understanding of the behavior of matter in extreme astrophysical and cosmological environments. Lying beyond these expectations, we can identify deep questions that seem to call for ideas outside our present grasp. And there's still plenty of room for surprises.

Abstract:Maxwell's demon is the quintessential example of information control, which is necessary for designing quantum devices. In thermodynamics, the demon is an intelligent being who utilizes the entropic nature of information to sort excitations between reservoirs, thus lowering the total entropy. So far, implementations of Maxwell's demon have largely been limited to Markovian baths. In our work, we study the degree to which such a demon may be assisted by non-Markovian effects using a superconducting circuit platform. The setup is two baths connected by a demon-controlled qutrit interface, allowing the transfer of excitations only if the overall entropy of the two baths is lowered. The largest entropy reduction is achieved in a non-Markovian regime, and importantly, due to non-Markovian effects, the demon performance can be optimized through proper timing. Our results demonstrate that non-Markovian effects can be exploited to boost the information transfer rate in quantum Maxwell demons.
