Abstract:Quantum Szilard engine constitutes an adequate interplay of thermodynamics, information theory and quantum mechanics. Szilard engines are in general operated by a Maxwell's Demon where Landauer's principle resolves the apparent paradoxes. Here we propose a Szilard engine setup without featuring an explicit Maxwell's demon. In a demonless Szilard engine, the acquisition of which-side information is not required, but erasure and the related heat dissipation still take place implicitly by the very nature of the work extraction process. We see that the insertion of the partition in a quantum Szilard engine does not localize the particle to one side, instead it creates a superposition state of the particle being in both sides. To be able to extract work from the system, particle has to be localized at one side. The localization occurs as a result of quantum measurement on the particle, which shows the importance of the measurement process regardless of whether one uses the acquired information or not. In accordance with the Landauer's principle, localization by quantum measurement corresponds to a logically irreversible operation and for this reason it has to be accompanied by the corresponding heat dissipation. This shows the validity of the Landauer's principle even in quantum Szilard engines without Maxwell's demon. Furthermore, we take quantum confinement effects fully into account to analyze the Szilard cycle in the quantum regime thoroughly and obtain highly accurate analytical expressions for work and heat exchanges. Our results show that Landauer's principle holds the key role to understand the thermodynamics of the localization of the particle by quantum measurement, which explicitly saves the second law in demonless engines and shows that quantum-mechanical considerations are essential to reconcile thermodynamics and information theory.

Abstract:We analyze an engine whose working fluid consists of a single quantum particle, paralleling Szilard's construction of a classical single-particle engine. Following his resolution of Maxwell's Second Law paradox using the latter, which turned on physically instantiating the demon (control subsystem), the quantum engine's design mirrors the classically-chaotic Szilard Map that operates a thermodynamic cycle of measurement, thermal-energy extraction, and memory reset. Focusing on the thermodynamic costs to observe and control the particle and comparing these in the quantum and classical limits, we detail the thermodynamic tradeoffs behind Landauer's Principle for information-processing-induced thermodynamic dissipation in the quantum and classical regimes. In particular, and as found with the classical engine, we show that the sum of the thermodynamic costs over a cycle obeys a generalized Landauer Principle, exactly balancing energy extraction from the heat bath. Thus, the quantum engine obeys the Second Law. However, the quantum engine does so via substantially different mechanisms: classically measurement and erasure determine the thermodynamics, while in the quantum implementation the cost of partition insertion is key.

Abstract:We study a quantum Szilard engine that is not powered by heat drawn from a thermal reservoir, but rather by projective measurements. The engine is constituted of a system $\mathcal{S}$, a weight $\mathcal{W}$, and a Maxwell demon $\mathcal{D}$, and extracts work via measurement-assisted feedback control. By imposing natural constraints on the measurement and feedback processes, such as energy conservation and leaving the memory of the demon intact, we show that while the engine can function without heat from a thermal reservoir, it must give up at least one of the following features that are satisfied by a standard Szilard engine: (i) repeatability of measurements; (ii) invariant weight entropy; or (iii) positive work extraction for all measurement outcomes. This result is shown to be a consequence of the Wigner-Araki-Yanase (WAY) theorem, which imposes restrictions on the observables that can be measured under additive conservation laws. This observation is a first-step towards developing "second-law-like" relations for measurement-assisted feedback control beyond thermality.

Abstract:The Szilárd engine is a mechanism (akin to Maxwell's demon) for converting information into energy, which seemingly violates the second law of thermodynamics. Originally a classical thought experiment, it was extended to a quantized treatment by Zurek. Here, we examine a new, elegant model of a quantum Szilárd engine by replacing the traditional rigid box with a harmonic potential, extending the scope of the model. Remarkably, almost all calculations are exact. This article is suitable for students, researchers, and educators interested in the conceptual links among information, entropy, and quantum measurement.

Abstract:A Maxwell's demon is a device that gets information and trades it in for thermodynamic advantage, in apparent (but not actual) contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics. Quantum-mechanical versions of Maxwell's demon exhibit features that classical versions do not: in particular, a device that gets information about a quantum system disturbs it in the process. In addition, the information produced by quantum measurement acts as an additional source of thermodynamic inefficiency. This paper investigates the properties of quantum-mechanical Maxwell's demons, and proposes experimentally realizable models of such devices.

Abstract:Maxwell's demon can be utilized to construct quantum information engines. While most of the existing quantum information engines harness thermal fluctuations, quantum information engines that utilize quantum fluctuations have recently been discussed. We propose a new type of genuinely quantum information engine that harnesses quantum fluctuations to achieve cumulative storage of useful work and unidirectional transport of a particle. Our scheme does not require thermalization, which eliminates the ambiguity in evaluating the power and velocity of our proposed engine in contrast to other existing quantum information engines that can transport a particle. We find a tradeoff relationship between the maximum achievable power and the maximum velocity. We also propose an improved definition of efficiency by clarifying all possible energy flows involved in the engine cycle.

Abstract:In scenarios coined Maxwell's demon, information on microscopic degrees of freedom is used to seemingly violate the second law of thermodynamics. This has been studied in the classical as well as the quantum domain. In this paper, we study an implementation of Maxwell's demon that can operate in both domains. In particular, we investigate information-to-work conversion over the quantum-to-classical transition. The demon continuously measures the charge state of a double quantum dot, and uses this information to guide electrons against a voltage bias by tuning the on-site energies of the dots. Coherent tunneling between the dots allows for the buildup of quantum coherence in the system. Under strong measurements, the coherence is suppressed, and the system is well-described by a classical model. As the measurement strength is further increased, the Zeno effect prohibits interdot tunneling. A Zeno-like effect is also observed for weak measurements, where measurement errors lead to fluctuations in the on-site energies, dephasing the system. We anticipate similar behaviors in other quantum systems under continuous measurement and feedback control, making our results relevant for implementations in quantum technology and quantum control.

A many-particle bosonic quantum Maxwell demon

Abstract:Energy extraction from a measured quantum system is a cornerstone of information thermodynamics as illustrated by Maxwell's demon. The nonequilibrium physics of many-particle systems is additionally strongly influenced by quantum statistics. We here report the first experimental realization of a quantum demon in a many-particle photonic setup made of two identical thermal light beams. We show that single-photon measurements combined with feedforward operation may deterministically increase the mean energy of one beam faster than energy fluctuations, thus improving the thermodynamic stability of the device. We moreover demonstrate that bosonic statistics can enhance the energy output above the classical limit, and further analyze the counterintuitive thermodynamics of the demon using an information-theoretic approach. Our results underscore the pivotal role of many-particle statistics for enhanced energy extraction in quantum thermodynamics.

Abstract:We study the physical mechanism of Maxwell's demon (MD), which helps do extra work in thermodynamic cycles with the heat engine. This is exemplified with one molecule confined in an infinitely deep square potential with a movable solid wall. The MD is modeled as a two-level system (TLS) for measuring and controlling the motion of the molecule. The processes in the cycle are described in a quantum fashion. It is discovered that a MD with quantum coherence or one at a temperature lower than the molecule's heat bath can enhance the ability of the whole working substance, formed by the heat engine plus the MD, to do work outside. This observation reveals that the essential role of the MD is to drive the whole working substance off equilibrium, or equivalently, to work between two heat baths with different effective temperatures. The elaborate studies with this model explicitly reveal the effect of finite size off the classical limit or thermodynamic limit, which contradicts common sense on a Szilard heat engine (SHE). The quantum SHE's efficiency is evaluated in detail to prove the validity of the second law of thermodynamics.

Abstract:Maxwell’s Demon is a thought experiment devised by J. C. Maxwell in 1867 in order to show that the Second Law of thermodynamics is not universal, since it has a counter-example. Since the Second Law is taken by many to provide an arrow of time, the threat to its universality threatens the account of temporal directionality as well. Various attempts to “exorcise” the Demon, by proving that it is impossible for one reason or another, have been made throughout the years, but none of them were successful. We have shown (in a number of publications) by a general state-space argument that Maxwell’s Demon is compatible with classical mechanics, and that the most recent solutions, based on Landauer’s thesis, are not general. In this paper we demonstrate that Maxwell’s Demon is also compatible with quantum mechanics. We do so by analyzing a particular (but highly idealized) experimental setup and proving that it violates the Second Law. Our discussion is in the framework of standard quantum mechanics; we give two separate arguments in the framework of quantum mechanics with and without the projection postulate. We address in our analysis the connection between measurement and erasure interactions and we show how these notions are applicable in the microscopic quantum mechanical structure. We discuss what might be the quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical notion of “macrostates”, thus explaining why our Quantum Demon setup works not only at the micro level but also at the macro level, properly understood. One implication of our analysis is that the Second Law cannot provide a universal lawlike basis for an account of the arrow of time; this account has to be sought elsewhere.

Abstract:This article presents recent progress in the theory of quantum measurement engines and discusses the implications of them for quantum interpretations and philosophical implications of the theory. Several new measurement engine designs are introduced and analyzed. We discuss a feedback-based atom-and-piston engine that exactly associates all work with successful events and all quantum heat with the failed events, as well as an unconditional but coherent qubit engine that can attain perfect efficiency. Any quantum measurement of an observable that does not commute with the Hamiltonian will necessarily change the energy of the system. We discuss different ways to extract that energy, the efficiency and work production of that process.

Abstract:Subsystems of a composite system in a pure state generally exist in mixed states and undergo changes with the overall state. This phenomenon arises from the coherence of the entire system and represents a crucial distinction between quantum and classical systems. Such a quantum property can enhance the work of an Otto heat engine, where two coupled qubits serve as the working substance, allowing situations in which negative work output initially occurred to now yield positive work. We utilize the imagery of Maxwell's demon to explain the reason for positive work in this Otto cycle, attributing it to the increased coherence after the mutual measurement of the two subsystems. Conversely, the quantum measurement-erase cycle typically outputs negative work, attributed to the decoherence of the instrument during the measurement process.

Finite-Time Optimization of Quantum Szilard heat engine

Abstract:We propose a finite-time quantum Szilard engine (QSE) with a quantum particle with spin as the working substance (WS) to accelerate the operation of information engines. We introduce a Maxwell's demon (MD) to probe the spin state within a finite measurement time $t_{\rm M}$ to capture the which-way information of the particle, quantified by the mutual information $I(t_{\rm{M}})$ between WS and MD. We establish that the efficiency $\eta$ of QSE is bounded by $\eta\leq1-(1-\eta_{\rm{C}}){\rm ln}2/I(t_{\rm M})$, where $I(t_{\rm M})/\rm{ln}2$ characterizes the ideality of quantum measurement, and approaches $1$ for the Carnot efficiency reached under ideal measurement in quasi-static regime. We find that the power of QSE scales as $P\propto t_{\rm M}^{3}$ in the short-time regime and as $P\propto t_{\rm M}^{-1}$ in the long-time regime. Additionally, considering the energy cost for erasing the MD's memory required by Landauer's principle, there exists a threshold time that guarantees QSE to output positive work.

Abstract:In an asymmetric Szilard engine model of Maxwell's demon, we show the equivalence between information theoretical and thermodynamic entropies when the demon erases information optimally. The work gain by the engine can be exactly canceled out by the work necessary to reset demon's memory after optimal data compression a la Shannon before the erasure.

Abstract:The most succinct manifestation of the second law of thermodynamics is the limitation the Landauer principle imposes on the amount of heat a Maxwell demon (MD) can convert into free energy per single bit of information obtained in a measurement. We suggest and experimentally realize a reversible electronic MD based on a single-electron box operated as a Szilard engine, providing the first demonstration of this limitation: extraction of kT ln 2 of heat from the reservoir at temperature T per one bit of created information. The information is encoded in the position of an extra electron in the box.

Abstract:We introduce a class of quantum heat engines which consists of two-energy-eigenstate systems, the simplest of quantum mechanical systems, undergoing quantum adiabatic processes and energy exchanges with heat baths, respectively, at different stages of a cycle. Armed with this class of heat engines and some interpretation of heat transferred and work performed at the quantum level, we are able to clarify some important aspects of the second law of thermodynamics. In particular, it is not sufficient to have the heat source hotter than the sink, but there must be a minimum temperature difference between the hotter source and the cooler sink before any work can be extracted through the engines. The size of this minimum temperature difference is dictated by that of the energy gaps of the quantum engines involved. Our new quantum heat engines also offer a practical way, as an alternative to Szilard's engine, to physically realise Maxwell's daemon. Inspired and motivated by the Rabi oscillations, we further introduce some modifications to the quantum heat engines with single-mode cavities in order to, while respecting the second law, extract more work from the heat baths than is otherwise possible in thermal equilibria. Some of the results above are also generalisable to quantum heat engines of an infinite number of energy levels including 1-D simple harmonic oscillators and 1-D infinite square wells.

Abstract:A quantum measurement involves energy exchanges between the system to be measured and the measuring apparatus. Some of them involve energy losses, for example because energy is dissipated into the environment or is spent in recording the measurement outcome. Moreover, these processes take time. For this reason, these exchanges must be taken into account in the analysis of a quantum measurement engine, and set limits to its efficiency and power. We propose a quantum engine based on a spin 1/2 particle in a magnetic field and study its limitations due to the quantum nature of the evolution. The coupling with the electromagnetic vacuum is taken into account and plays the role of a measurement apparatus. Abstract:By considering the actual equivalent circuit model of three quantum dots with Coulomb coupling, a thermodynamic pump driven by Maxwell's demon is proposed. The pump may be a quantum chemical pump operated between two material reservoirs or a quantum heat pump operated between two heat reservoirs, and the demon may be a subsystem operated between two heat reservoirs or between two material reservoirs. The Markov stochastic thermodynamics is used to analyze how information is generated in the demon, which drives the mass or heat transfer in the pump. Nonequilibrium free energy theorems demonstrate that the information provided by Maxwell's demon makes the quantum pump work normally without energy input. It is proved that the proposed system does not violate the second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, the modified entropy-production rate containing information flow and the local rates of nonequilibrium free energy of quantum pumps are calculated. The results obtained may be helpful to the deep understanding of the inter-conversion of both information and work.

Abstract:We report experimental realization of a quantum version of Maxwell’s demon using solid state spins where the information acquiring and feedback operations by the demon are achieved through conditional quantum gates.A unique feature of this implementation is that the demon can start in a quantum superposition state or in an entangled state with an ancilla observer. Through quantum state tomography, we measure the entropy in the system, demon, and the ancilla, showing the influence of coherence and entanglement on the result. A quantum implementation of Maxwell’s demon adds more controllability to this paradoxical thermal machine and may find applications in quantum thermodynamics involving microscopic systems.
