Abstract:We prove that a $4d$ theory of non-linear electrodynamics has equations of motion which are equivalent to those of the Maxwell theory in curved spacetime, but with the usual metric $g_{\mu \nu}$ replaced by a unit-determinant metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$ which is a function of the field strength $F_{\mu \nu}$, if and only if the theory enjoys electric-magnetic duality invariance. Among duality-invariant models, the Modified Maxwell (ModMax) theory is special because the associated metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$ produces identical equations of motion when it is coupled to the Maxwell theory via two different prescriptions which we describe. We use the field-dependent metric perspective to analyze the electric and magnetic $1$-form global symmetries in models of self-dual electrodynamics. This analysis suggests that any duality-invariant theory possesses a set of conserved currents $j^\mu$ which are in one-to-one correspondence with $2$-forms that are harmonic with respect to the field-dependent metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$.

The 1932 Majorana Equation: A Forgotten but Surprisingly Modern Particle Theory

Abstract:The Standard Model is an up-to-date theory that best summarizes current knowledge in particle physics. Although some problems still remain open, it represents the leading model which all physicists refer to. One of the pillars which underpin the Standard Model is represented by the Lorentz invariance of the equations that form its backbone. These equations made it possible to predict the existence of particles and phenomena that experimental physics had not yet been able to detect. The first hint of formulating a fundamental theory of particles can be found in the 1932 Majorana equation, formulated when electrons and protons were the only known particles. Today we know that parts of the hypotheses set by Majorana were not correct, but his equation hid concepts that are found in the Standard Model. In this study, the Majorana equation is revisited and solved for free particles. The time-like, light-like and space-like solutions, represented by infinite-component wave functions, are discussed.

Abstract:The paper examines the geometrical properties of a six-dimensional Kaluza-Klein type model. They may have an impact on the model of the structure of a neutron and its excited states in the realm of one particle physics. The statistical reason for the six-dimensionality and the stability of the solution is given. The derivation of the weak limit approximation of the general wave mechanical (quantum mechanical) approach, defined in the context of losing its self-consistency (here gravitational), is presented. The non self-consistent case for the Klein-Gordon equation is defined. The derivation of the energy of states and the analysis of the spin origin of the analyzed fields configuration is presented as the manifestation of both the geometry of the internal two-dimensional space and kinematics of fields inside it. The problem of the departure from the (gravitational) self-consistent calculations of the metric tensor and of other fields of the configuration is discussed. The implementation of the model for the description of a neutron and its excited states, including their spins and energies, is given. The informational reason for the existence of the internal extra space dimensions is proposed.

Abstract:With the idea to find geometric formulations of particle physics we investigate the predictions of a three dimensional generalisation of the Sine-Gordon model, very close to the Skyrme model and to the Wu-Yang description of Dirac monopoles. With three rotational degrees of freedom of spatial Dreibeins we formulate a Lagrangian and confront the predictions to electromagnetic phenomena. Stable solitonic excitations we compare with the lightest fundamental electric charges, electrons and positrons. Two Goldstone bosons we relate to the properties of photons. These particles are characterised by three topological quantum numbers, which we compare to charge, spin and photon number. Finally we conjecture some ideas for further comparisons with experiments.
Price Variations in a Stock Market With Many Agents

Abstract:Large variations in stock prices happen with sufficient frequency to raise doubts about existing models, which all fail to account for non-Gaussian statistics. We construct simple models of a stock market, and argue that the large variations may be due to a crowd effect, where agents imitate each other's behavior. The variations over different time scales can be related to each other in a systematic way, similar to the Levy stable distribution proposed by Mandelbrot to describe real market indices. In the simplest, least realistic case, exact results for the statistics of the variations are derived by mapping onto a model of diffusing and annihilating particles, which has been solved by quantum field theory methods. When the agents imitate each other and respond to recent market volatility, different scaling behavior is obtained. In this case the statistics of price variations is consistent with empirical observations. The interplay between ``rational'' traders whose behavior is derived from fundamental analysis of the stock, including dividends, and ``noise traders'', whose behavior is governed solely by studying the market dynamics, is investigated. When the relative number of rational traders is small, ``bubbles'' often occur, where the market price moves outside the range justified by fundamental market analysis. When the number of rational traders is larger, the market price is generally locked within the price range they define.

Abstract:In physics, we construct idealized mathematical models in order to explain various phenomena which we observe or create in our laboratories. In this article, I recall how sophisticated mathematical models evolved from the concept of a number created thousands of years ago, and I discuss some challenges and open questions in quantum foundations and in the Standard Model. We liberated nuclear energy, landed on the Moon and built 'quantum computers'. Encouraged by these successes, many believe that when we reconcile general relativity with quantum theory we will have the correct theory of everything. Perhaps we should be much humbler. Our perceptions of reality are biased by our senses and by our brain, bending them to meet our priors and expectations. Our abstract mathematical models describe only in an approximate way different layers of physical reality. To describe the motion of a meteorite, we can use a concept of a material point, but the point-like approximation breaks completely when the meteorite hits the Earth. Similarly, thermodynamic, chemical, molecular, atomic, nuclear and elementary particle layers of physical reality are described using specific abstract mathematical models and approximations. In my opinion, the theory of everything does not exist.

A New Perspective on Kaluza-Klein Theories

Abstract:By assuming that the geometry of spacetime is uniquely determined by the energy momentum tensor of matter alone, i.e. without any interactions, enables us to construct the Lagrangian from which the metric of higher dimensional spacetime follows. From the geodesic equations that follow it becomes clear that the incorrect mass of elementary particles predicted by Kaluza-Klein theories arises from the assumption that in the absence of gravity the solution to the Einstein field equations reduces to the Minkowski metric. From construction of a consistent theory of $4\mathcal{D}$ electromagnetism, we find that this assumption does not only result in the incorrect mass of elementary particles, but also the incorrect value of the cosmological constant. This suggests that these incorrect predictions, which are often regarded as major flaws of Kaluza-Klein theories, just reflects the inconsistency of some postulates of general relativity and gauge theories. Abandoning this assumption results in modifications of general relativity. We show that the unified description of fundamental interactions naturally incorporates the Higgs mechanism. For non-Abelian gauge fields, we find that the manifold comprising the extra dimensions has to be a group manifold and show that the standard model is realised in 16$\mathcal{D}$ spacetime. We show that charge and spin are the same concept, but what makes them different is that the former follows from symmetry of $4\mathcal{D}$ spacetime while the latter follows from symmetry of the internal space.

Abstract:Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles is shown to be equivalent to Maxwell theory coupled to 2-form gauge fields so that it has a local 1-form symmetry, with the 2-form gauge fields given in terms of the 2-form current densities associated with the Dirac strings. The field equations of Dirac's theory do not depend on the positions of the Dirac strings provided that they do not intersect the worldlines of any electrically charged particles; this constraint is called the Dirac veto. It is shown that Dirac's action is independent of the positions of the Dirac strings and that this corresponds a local 1-form symmetry. The electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries have a mixed anomaly, and the Dirac veto is shown to correspond to a restriction to gauge transformations for which the anomaly vanishes. The extension to $p$-form gauge fields in d-dimensions coupled to charged branes is discussed, together with the possibility of cancelling the anomaly by embedding in a higher-dimensional theory and so avoiding the veto.

Abstract:The QCDSP machines were designed for lattice gauge calculations. For planning it is crucial to explore this architecture for other computationally intensive tasks. Here I describe an implementation of a simple message passing scheme. With the objective being simplicity, I introduce a small number of generic functions for manipulating a large data set spread over the machine. I test the scheme on three applications: a fast Fourier transform, arbitrary dimension SU(N) pure lattice gauge theory, and the manipulation of Fermionic Fock states through a distributed hash table. These routines compile both on QCDSP and a Unix workstation.

Double-slit and electromagnetic models to complete quantum mechanics

Abstract:We analyze a realistic microscopic model for electronic scattering with the neutral differential delay equations of motion of point charges of the Wheeler-Feynman electrodynamics. We propose a microscopic model according to the electrodynamics of point charges, complex enough to describe the essential physics. Our microscopic model reaches a simple qualitative agreement with the experimental results as regards interference in double-slit scattering and in electronic scattering by crystals. We discuss our model in the light of existing experimental results, including a qualitative disagreement found for the double-slit experiment. We discuss an approximation for the complex neutral differential delay equations of our model using piecewise-defined (discontinuous) velocities for all charges and piecewise-constant-velocities for the scattered charge. Our approximation predicts the De Broglie wavelength as an inverse function of the incoming velocity and in the correct order of magnitude. We explain the scattering by crystals in the light of the same simplified modeling with Einstein-local interactions. We include a discussion of the qualitative properties of the neutral-delay-equations of electrodynamics to stimulate future experimental tests on the possibility to complete quantum mechanics with electromagnetic models.

Unified field theory from one-particle physics

Abstract:This work starts with the observation of a certain "rule" (up to now unexplored) in the fundamental laws of Nature. We show some evidence of this, and formulate it as a fundamental principle which exhibits a number physical consequences. In particular, a new, very simple and extremely aesthetic unified model, which includes supersymmetry and supergravity, naturally arises from this principle, together with some new "physics". Furthermore, the new interpretation of Kaluza-Klein extra dimensions we advocate here provides a natural argument for dimensional reduction, and the agreement with the observed phenomenology is recovered. In the high energy regime, a new physics is expected. Consequences in QFT are shortly commented. Finally, we observe a structure of "levels" and formulate a general conjecture about such a concept.

Maxwell-Dirac isomorphism revisited: from foundations of quantum mechanics to geometrodynamics and cosmology

Abstract:Although electrons (fermions) and photons(bosons) produce the same interference patterns in the two-slit experiments, the description of these patterns is markedly different. Photons are spin one, relativistic and massless while electrons are spin 1/2 massive particles producing the same interference patterns. In spite of these differences, already in early 30ies of 20ieth century the isomorphism between the source-free Maxwell and Dirac equations was established. It permitted us to replace Born probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics with the optical. In 1925 Rainich combined source-free Maxwell equations with Einstein's equations for gravity. His results were rediscovered by Misner and Wheeler in their "geometrodynamics". Absence of sources in it remained a problem until Ranada's work. His results required the existence of null electromagnetic fields absent in geometrodynamics. They were added later on by Geroch. Ranada's solutions of source-free Maxwell's equations came out as knots and links. In this work new proof of knotty nature of the electron is established. The obtained result perfectly blends with the descripion of rotating and charged black hole.

The self-dual Lorentz violating model: quantization, scattering and dual equivalence

Abstract:In this paper, we analysis the dynamics, at the quantum level, of the self-dual field minimally coupled to bosons with Lorentz symmetry breaking. We quantize the model by applying the Dirac bracket canonical quantization procedure. In addition, we test the relativistic invariance of the model by computing the boson-boson elastic scattering amplitude. Therefore, we show that the Lorentz symmetry breaking has been restored at the quantum level. We finalize our analysis by computing the dual equivalence between the self-dual model with Lorentz symmetry breaking coupled with bosonic matter and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons with Lorentz invariance violation coupled with bosonic field.

Abstract:Starting from a relativistic phenomenology of anyons in crystals, we discuss the concept of relativistic interaction and the need to unify electromagnetism and gravitation within the Spencer cohomology of Lie equations. Then, from the sophisticated non-linear Spencer complex of the Poincar\'e and conformal Lie pseudogroups, we build up a non-linear relative complex assigned to a gauge sequence for electromagnetic and gravitational potentials and fields. Then, using a conformally equivariant Lagrangian density, we deduce, first, the two first steps of its corresponding Janet complex and second, the dual relative linear complex. We conclude by giving suggestions for higher unification with the weak and strong interactions and interpretations of the Lagrangian density as a thermodynamical function and quantum wave-function.
Framework for the Quantum Mechanical Sum of Possibilities and Meaning for Field Theory and Gravity

Abstract:In quantum mechanics, the measureable quantities of a given theory are predicted by performing a weighted sum over possibilities. We show how to arrange the possibilities into bundles such that the associated subsums can be viewed as well-defined theories on their own right. These bundles are submani$\textit{folds}$ of $\textit{possi}$bilities which we call possifolds. We collect and prove some basic facts about possifolds. Especially, we show that possifolds are ensembles of what in a certain broadly defined sense that we explain can be regarded as soliton excitations (soliton-possifold correspondence). We provide an outlook on some applications. Among other things, we illustrate the use of the developed framework for the example of the Lieb-Liniger model. It describes non-relativistic bosons with an attractive interaction. We derive a dual theory describing the lowest-lying energy excitation modes. While the standard Bogoliubov-approximation breaks down at the critical point, our derived summation prescription stays regular. In the Bogoliubov-limit we observe the summation to possess an enhanced symmetry at this point while the summation cannot be ignored there. We finally provide a glimpse on the restrictions black hole physics implies in this context for the gravitational path integral.

Ontological States in Non-Interacting Quantum Field Theories

Abstract:This is a paper in the field of ontological deterministic theories behind Quantum Field Theories, like for example the cellular automaton theories proposed by 't Hooft. In these theories one has ontological states in which the state of reality is exactly known and no uncertainties are present. Also these states evolve in time deterministically. A first step in finding the ontological deterministic theory behind the Standard Model is to find in Quantum Field Theory the states that behave as ontological states. We present the ontological states for all non-interacting (3+1-dimensional) Quantum Field Theories occurring in the Standard Model. We summarize the ontological states for free scalar bosons and for free masless Dirac fermions, which are known from the literature. We construct the ontological states for vector bosons, in analogy to the scalar boson case. With this we have a set of ontological states for all particles that are known to occur in reality and in the Standard Model.

Abstract:The geometrization process of physics could involve, in addition to space and time in General Relativity (GR), even elementary particles. Our starting point is the formulation of an original hypothesis about particles, compatible with the basic assumptions of the Standard Model (SM): a massive particle is a geometric structure of a set of elastically coupled quantum oscillators that propagates along a line of a non-massive base field (in impulse eigenstate). We show that the propagation equation of an oscillation associated with the geometric shape representing an electron propagates following Dirac’s wave equation. Thus, one gives a foundation to a geometric model of massive particles (GMP) which would explain the physical origin of the mass, spin, and the magnetic moment of the electron.
