Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:In this work, quantization of electromagnetic fields in a general anisotropic inhomogeneous media is considered. First, the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Once the Hamiltonian is derived, with it the classical equations of motion follow. Next, the fields are elevated to become quantum operators, for which conjugate pairs are endowed with commutators. Since as previously shown, such commutators induce functional derivatives, the quantum equations of motion can be easily derived. Next, the mode decomposition of the fields is demonstrated. Upon substitution into the classical Hamiltonian, each mode then behaves like a simple harmonic oscillator. These oscillators can then be elevated to become quantum harmonic oscillators. Both the traveling wave modes and the standing wave modes are discussed. Furthermore, the longitudinal modes are described. Finally, the case of impressed sources are considered, with the corresponding Hamiltonian and field quantization. The Green's functions for the linear system are presented. Finally, the quantum Maxwell's equations are derived. A short discussion on field-atom interaction is given.

Abstract:In this work, numerical solution to a general electromagnetic (EM) system is studied using a formalism based on the formulas for the E–B–A– $\phi $ formulas with different gauge conditions. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to discretize these formulas. In addition, the convolutional perfectly matched layer (CPML) technique is successfully applied to absorb outgoing scattered waves described by the proposed formulas. The gauge invariance of EM fields in inhomogeneous environment is demonstrated by numerical examples. Moreover, the proposed EM framework integrated with the Schrödinger equation is introduced to investigate the mesoscopic phenomenon for light–matter interaction, which is useful to design laser pulses for controlling discrete quantum states. The work offers a simple and general numerical EM framework, which is essential to bridge the classical EM and quantum mechanical systems.

Abstract:Abstract The light–matter interaction not only is ubiquitous in nature but also can be simulated in various artificial systems. Besides the tunability of artificial quantum systems, the experimental access to the ultra‐strong and even deep‐strong couplings has brought a regime with novel phenomenology. Theoretically the finding of the integrability for the quantum Rabi model (QRM) has attracted tremendous attention to the study of the QRM and its extensions which are fundamental models of the light–matter interaction. With the continuing enhancements of coupling strengths, a most fascinating phenomenon of these light–matter models is that they can exhibit few‐body quantum phase transitions (QPTs), while a full understanding of these QPTs is a challenge. The polaron picture is a method capable of analyzing these fundamental models in the entire coupling regime and extracting the essential physics behind the QPTs. A review of its extensive applications on the fundamental light–matter models is presented, with discussions on the phase diagrams and QPT‐related features. The universality of critical exponent of the anisotropic QRM as well as the possibility of QPTs in A 2 terms are also addressed.

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Abstract:The light-matter interaction is one of the fundamental research fields in physics. The electron is the first discovered elementary particle that makes up matter. Therefore, the interaction between electron and light field has long been the research interest of physicists. Electrons are divided into two kinds, i.e. bounded electrons and free electrons. The quantum transition of bounded electron system is constrained by the selection rules with the discrete energy levels, while the free electron systems are not. In the last decade, the experiments of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM) have been demonstrated. The experimental setup of PINEM is based on ultrafast electron transmission microscopy (UTEM). The thoeritcal framworks have also been developed to describe the interaction between quantum free electrons and optical fields. Within macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, the concept of photon is extended to photonic quasi-particles. Solutions of maxwell's equations in medium that satisfy certain boundary conditions are called photonic quasiparticles, such as surface plasmon polaritons, phonon polaritons, or even magnetic field. The different dispersion relations of photonic quasi-particles produce abundant phenomena in the interaction between light and matter. The underlying information about the PINEM interaction can be inferred from the electron energy loss spectrum (EELS). It has been used for implementing the near-field imaging in its infancy. By now it is capable of not only realizing time-resolved dynamic imaging, reconstructing the dispersion relation of photonics crystal and its Bloch mode, but also measuring the mode lifetime directly. The PINEM has also been used to study free electron wavepacket reshaping, free electron comb, free electron attosecond pulse train, etc. Recently, this field has entered into the era of quantum optics, and people use PINEM to study novel phenomena in quantum optics, such as entanglement between free electrons and cavity photons, entanglement between free electrons and free electrons, free electron qubits, and preparation of novel light quantum states. In this paper, the theoretical and experimental development of free-electron quantum physics are reviewed. We have disscussed the application scenarios of quantum free electron system. The current difficulties and future development are envisaged.

Abstract:We study effective models describing systems of quantum particles interacting with quantized (electromagnetic) fields in the quasi-classical regime, i.e., when the field's state shows a large average number of excitations. Once the field's degrees of freedom are traced out on factorized states, the reduced dynamics of the particles' system is described by an effective Schrödinger operator keeping track of the field's state. We prove that, under suitable assumptions on the latter, such effective models are well-posed even if the particles are point-like, that is no ultraviolet cut-off is imposed on the interaction with quantum fields.

This paper gives an overview of the fundamental principles used in these two fields for description of light-matter interaction. By exploring the simplest type of matter composed of charge-free particles bearing magnetic moments only, differences in the fundamental principles of classical and quantum optics are discussed and clarified.

Abstract:The reports in this monograph have shown great enthusiasm and exuberance for the unification of various interactions through the concept of gauge fields. I would like to emphasize a point that has not yet been explicitly stated by any of the other authors: gauge fields are deeply related to some profoundly beautiful ideas of contemporary mathematics, ideas that are the driving forces of part of the mathematics of the last 40 years. Recalling the relationship between physics and mathematics in earlier periods, general relativity and Riemannian geometry, quantum mechanics and Hilbert space, it is all too obvious that physicists may again be zeroing in on a fundamental new secret of nature.
A Perturbation Theory Study of Electron Vortices in Electromagnetic Fields: the Case of Infinitely Long Line Charge and Magnetic Dipole

Abstract:The novel discovery of electron vortices carrying quantized orbital angular momentum motivated intensive research of their basic properties as well as applications, e.g. structural characterization of magnetic materials. In this paper, the fundamental interactions of electron vortices within infinitely long atomic-column-like electromagnetic fields are studied based on the relativistically corrected Pauli-Schrödinger equation and the perturbation theory. The relative strengths of three fundamental interactions, i.e. the electron-electric potential interaction, the electron-magnetic potential/field interaction and the spin-orbit coupling are discussed. The results suggest that the perturbation energies of the last two interactions are in an order of 10(3)-10(4) smaller than that of the first one for electron vortices. In addition, it is also found that the strengths of these interactions are strongly dependant on the spatial distributions of the electromagnetic field as well as the electron vortices.

Abstract:The canonical quantization to a Ginzburg–Landau-like theory is shown by considering the potentials of the electromagnetic field and the Chern–Simons field independently. The operator of matter fields which carries fractional spin and obeys the fractional statistics is constructed. The transportation of flux between those of the corresponding gauge field and Chern–Simons field is found. This leads to a striking conclusion that the electromagnetic field induced a topological term, which gives photon mass and leads to a Meissner effect different than happens in ordinary Ginzburg–Landau theory. The induction of a Chern–Simons term for the electromagnetic field is considered the origin of fractional statistics in general, through the transportation of flux is equivalent to the transportation of the long-distance interaction in the text. That the Chern–Simons field is hidden in the constructed matter field gives rise to a theoretical interpretation of the off-diagonal long-range order in the theory.
Monopoles and Fermions in the Standard Model

Abstract:We consider all magnetic monopoles that could have settled in the Standard Model after descending from a generic microscopic theory. These monopoles have Standard Model quantum numbers, are stable, and we also require that their magnetic fluxes are consistent with the electroweak symmetry breaking. Scattering processes involving quarks, leptons and protons on these monopoles are studied using partial waves decomposition. These processes in the lowest partial wave are known to be unsuppressed by the monopole mass and are relevant for monopole catalysis of proton decay. We provide estimates for scattering cross-sections and investigate and confirm the applicability of the twisted sector approach to scattering processes on these Standard Model monopoles. We find that the SM monopole catalysis processes are universal and model-independent.

Maximal quantum interaction between free electrons and photons

Abstract:The emerging field of free-electron quantum optics enables electron-photon entanglement and holds the potential for generating nontrivial photon states for quantum information processing. Although recent experimental studies have entered the quantum regime, rapid theoretical developments predict that qualitatively unique phenomena only emerge beyond a certain interaction strength. It is thus pertinent to identify the maximal electron-photon interaction strength and the materials, geometries, and particle energies that enable one to approach it. We derive an upper limit to the quantum vacuum interaction strength between free electrons and single-mode photons, which illuminates the conditions for the strongest interaction. Crucially, we obtain an explicit energy selection recipe for electrons and photons to achieve maximal interaction at arbitrary separations and identify two optimal regimes favoring either fast or slow electrons over those with intermediate velocities. We validate the limit by analytical and numerical calculations on canonical geometries and provide near-optimal designs indicating the feasibility of strong quantum interactions. Our findings offer fundamental intuition for maximizing the quantum interaction between free electrons and photons and provide practical design rules for future experiments on electron-photon and electron-mediated photon-photon entanglement. They should also enable the evaluation of key metrics for applications such as the maximum power of free-electron radiation sources and the maximum acceleration gradient of dielectric laser accelerators.

Abstract:In this work we study the interaction strength among a neutral scalar boson and two massless vector bosons in presence of an external magnetic field. Based on global symmetries, we build the general tensor structure amplitude $\mathcal{M}^{\mu\nu}$, for the process $V^\mu+V^\nu\longrightarrow\phi$, in terms of the vector bosons polarization states. Then, we present a novel methodology to compute the one-loop amplitude contributions for an homogeneous magnetic field with arbitrary strength. With the obtained results, expressed in terms of integrals over Schwinger parameters, we explore its behavior in two regions, widely used in the literature, the strong and weak field strength regions. The methodology presented in this work can be employed to compute an arbitrary process in presence of an external magnetic field where the initial and final states are neutral.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive relativistic quantum-mechanical theory for interaction of a free electron with a bound electron in a model, where the free electron is represented as a finite-size quantum electron wave packet (QEW) and the bound electron is modeled by a quantum two-level system (TLS). The analysis reveals the wave-particle duality nature of the QEW, delineating the point-particle-like and wavelike interaction regimes and manifesting the physical reality of the wave function dimensions when interacting with matter. This QEW size dependence may be used for interrogation and coherent control of superposition states in a TLS and for enhancement of cathodoluminescence and electron energy-loss spectroscopy in electron microscopy.
