Abstract:A Lewis-acid-promoted approach to the synthesis of highly functionalized dihydrobenzofuran derivatives was developed. A diverse range of functional groups are tolerated in this type of reaction. The reaction mechanism investigation indicates that the highly reactive phenyl cation intermediate is probably involved in this process. The chirality of substrate is retained under the reaction conditions.

Abstract:A novel iron-catalyzed one-pot multi-component tandem reaction of acetoacetamide, urea, and two molecules of aryl aldehydes has been developed. This reaction provides a general, straightforward, practical and useful method for the preparation of potential bioactive (E)-6-arylvinyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones. They are also versatile precursors leading to diverse drug-like dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one derivative. The characters of avoiding protonic acid and using a single inexpensive and environmentally benign catalyst make this method more valuable.

Abstract:The highly regio- and enantioselective iron-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroboration of 1,1-disubstituted aryl alkenes is reported by using a novel chiral iminopyridine oxazoline (IPO) ligand, in which the iminopyridine group is proposed to stabilize the iron and chiral oxazoline group to control enantioselectivity. This distinct class of reactive IPO ligands will likely be of high value for a large variety of asymmetric transformations using first-row transition metals.

Abstract:An iron-catalyzed procedure was employed to achieve both the Sonogashira cross-coupling and intramolecular o-arylation of o-iodophenols and aryl acetylenes/1-substituted-2-trimethylsilyl acetylenes. A variety of 2-arylbenzo[b]furans were synthesized in moderate to good yields under the catalysis of 5% FeCl3 and 10% 1,10-phenanthroline.

Abstract:The asymmetric cross-coupling reaction is developed as a straightforward strategy toward 1,1-diaryl alkanes, which are a key skeleton in a series of natural products and bioactive molecules in recent years. Here we report an enantioselective benzylic C(sp(3))-H bond arylation via photoredox/nickel dual catalysis. Sterically hindered chiral biimidazoline ligands are designed for this asymmetric cross-coupling reaction. Readily available alkyl benzenes and aryl bromides with various functional groups tolerance can be easily and directly transferred to useful chiral 1,1-diaryl alkanes including pharmaceutical intermediates and bioactive molecules. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions without the use of external redox reagents.

Abstract:A new iron-catalyzed diastereoselective aminobromination method is reported for both internal and terminal olefins (yield up to 90% and dr up to >20:1). In this transformation, a functionalized hydroxylamine and bromide ion were used as the nitrogen and bromine source, respectively. This method is compatible with a broad range of olefins and provides a convenient approach to synthetically valuable vicinal bromo primary amines. Our studies suggest that both the diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity for the olefin aminobromination can be controlled by iron catalysts.

Abstract:Cu- or Fe-based catalyst systems have been reported to selectively catalyze the N,N-diarylation or N-monoarylation of benzoxazoles ring-opening with aryl iodides in the absence of additional added ligand in polyethylene glycol under an inert atmosphere. Two types of coupling products (triphenylamines and diphenylamines) have been examined and the reaction routes can be simply controlled by changing the metal salts (Cu or Fe) as catalyst. A range of substrates have been investigated for the diverse reactions, and the corresponding arylation products were achieved in good to high yields. This selective, low-cost, and environmentally friendly protocol displays great potential for replacing existing methodologies as well as extending the synthetic applications of benzoxazoles.

Abstract:A novel method for the organocatalytic syn diacetoxylation of alkenes has been developed using aryl iodides as efficient catalysts. A broad range of substrates, including electron-rich as well as electron-deficient alkenes, are smoothly transformed by the new procedure, furnishing the desired products in good to excellent yields with high diastereoselectivity (up to >19:1 dr).

Abstract:The arylative oxygenation of the electron-rich olefins styrene, α-methylstyrene, vinyl pyrrolidinone, and vinyl oxazolidinone was accomplished using arenediazonium salts and catalytic amounts of FeSO4 in an effective single electron transfer radical process. A broad range of aryldiazonium salts was tolerated using water, methanol, or their combination with acetonitrile to furnish the corresponding carbohydroxylated and carbomethoxylated products (42 examples), including functionalized dihydroisocoumarin and dihydrobenzofuran systems in good to excellent yields (up to 88%). The protocols developed for the Fe(II)-catalyzed carbohydroxylation were also compared to Ru(II) and Ir(III) photoredox carbooxygenations of these electron-rich olefins. The Fe(II)-catalyzed process proved to be highly competitive compared to the photoredox and the uncatalyzed processes. The proposed mechanism for the Fe(II)-catalyzed reactions involves the synergic combination with an effective Fe+2/Fe+3 redox system and a radical polar crossover mechanism featuring an unprecedented capture of the reactive N-acyliminium in the case of vinyl pyrrolidinone and vinyl oxazolidinone.

Abstract:Intermolecular carboamination of olefins with general alkyl groups is an unsolved problem. Diastereoselective carboamination of acyclic olefins represents an additional challenge in intermolecular carboaminations. We have developed a general alkylamination of vinylarenes and the unprecedented diastereoselective anti-carboamination of unsaturated esters, generating amines and unnatural β-amino acids. This alkylamination is enabled by difunctional alkylating reagents and the iron catalyst. Alkyl diacyl peroxides, readily synthesized from aliphatic acids, serve as both alkylating reagents and internal oxidizing agents. A computational study suggests that addition of a nitrile to the carbocation is the diastereoselectivity-determining step, and hyperconjugation is proposed to account for the highly diastereoselective anti-carboamination.

Abstract:Herein, catalytic difunctionalization of vinyl arenes is reported using iron salt as a catalyst without ligands. A series of substituted alkylboronic acid esters was obtained as a single regioisomer from vinyl arenes at 50 °C. This multicomponent protocol enabled the formation of C–C and C–B bonds to produce boroalkylated products in a single process. A non‐radical pathway is proposed for the reaction in contrast to the radical pathways of iron‐catalyzed hydroalkylation reactions. The organoboron compounds generated from this reaction were further utilized for diverse functional group conversions.

Abstract:CuO‐catalyzed 1,3‐addition of diaryliodonium triflates to diazo esters was realized. This new strategy forms a series of triflate‐substituted β‐aryloxyl acrylate compounds with good tolerance of functional groups and excellent regioselectivity. Mild reaction conditions are enough, and strong acids or bases are not required. Easy manipulation and good step‐economy are further advantages. The alkenyl triflate products can be further modified via cross‐coupling reactions to generate derivatized products.

Abstract:Organozinc reagents are among the most commonly used organometallic reagents in modern synthetic chemistry, and multifunctionalized organozinc reagents can be synthesized from structurally simple, readily available ones by means of alkyne carbozincation. However, this method suffers from poor tolerance for terminal alkynes, and transformation of the newly introduced organic groups is difficult, which limits its applications. Herein, we report a method for vinylzincation of terminal alkynes catalyzed by newly developed iron catalysts bearing 1,10-phenanthroline-imine ligands. This method provides efficient access to novel organozinc reagents with a diverse array of structures and functional groups from readily available vinylzinc reagents and terminal alkynes. The method features excellent functional group tolerance (tolerated functional groups include amino, amide, cyano, ester, hydroxyl, sulfonyl, acetal, phosphono, pyridyl), a good substrate scope (suitable terminal alkynes include aryl, alkenyl, and alkyl acetylenes bearing various functional groups), and high chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity. The method could significantly improve the synthetic efficiency of various important bioactive molecules, including vitamin A. Mechanistic studies indicate that the new iron-1,10-phenanthroline-imine catalysts developed in this study have an extremely crowded reaction pocket, which promotes efficient transfer of the vinyl group to the alkynes, disfavors substitution reactions between the zinc reagent and the terminal C-H bond of the alkynes, and prevents the further reactions of the products. Our findings show that iron catalysts can be superior to other metal catalysts in terms of activity, chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity when suitable ligands are used.

Abstract:Carboazidation of alkenes and alkynes holds the promise to construct valuable molecules directly from chemical feedstock therefore is significantly important. Although a few examples have been developed, there are still some unsolved problems and lack of universal methods for carboazidation of both alkenes and alkynes. Here we describe an iron-catalyzed rapid carboazidation of alkenes and alkynes, enabled by the oxidative radical relay precursor t -butyl perbenzoate. This strategy enjoys success with a broad scope of alkenes under mild conditions, and it can also work with aryl alkynes which are challenging substrates for carboazidation. A large number of diverse structures, including many kinds of amino acid precursors, fluoroalkylated vinyl azides, other specific organoazides, and 2 H -azirines can be easily produced.
