Abstract:A regioselective direct arylation of arenes and olefins at the ortho position is reported. The key to the high selectivity is the appropriate choice of diaryliodonium salts as the arylating reagent in the presence of a cationic iridium(III) catalyst. The coordination of the metal with an oxygen atom or a nitrogen atom and subsequent C-H activation allows for direct arylation with coupling partners. This reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions and with a high tolerance of various functional groups including many halide functional groups.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of novel fused heterocycles has been established via microwave-assisted palladium-catalyzed intramolecular direct arylation. The acyclic aryl bromides are readily available from microwave-assisted one-pot annulation of N-(2-bromobenzyl)-2-aminophenois and ethyl 2-bromoalkanoates. The intramolecular direct arylation is then performed in the presence of palladium(II) acetate and dppf (10 mol% each) in toluene using potassium carbonate (2 equiv) as the base under microwave heating (150 degrees C, 1 h) to afford the products in 43-99% yields. Steric effect is observed for Ar-Ar bond formation, giving a substantial amount of the debromination byproduct.

Abstract:A novel Pd(II)-catalyzed pyridine N-oxide directed remote arylation of unactivated Csp(3)-H bonds in aliphatic amides with aryl iodides has been developed. This protocol allows installing various aryl groups at the β- or γ-Csp(3) atom of alkyl carboxylic acid amides. The key palladabicyclic intermediate of this transformation has been identified by HR-MS and (1)H NMR method.

Abstract:A Rh(I)-catalyzed C6-selective C–H arylation of 2-pyridones with inexpensive, readily available, safe and structurally diverse aryl carboxylic acids with the aid of a pyridine directing group is developed. This oxidant-free decarbonylative arylation protocol features a simple and easy-to-handle catalytic system and very broad substrate scope. It allows facile access to a wide range of C6-arylated 2-pyridones, including those that are difficult to prepare using conventional C–H arylation processes. The method tolerates a broad range of functional groups and affords the products in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of biphenyls was developed by a Cu(OTf)(2)-catalyzed direct arylation between an electron-rich arene and a diaryliodonium salt. The reaction went through a modified Friedel Crafts reaction mechanism, in which Cu(OTf)(2) served as both Lewis-acid catalyst and transition-metal catalyst to generate the aryl carbocation from the corresponding diaryliodonium salt. Abstract:This study demonstrates an electrochemically driven, Ir(III)-catalyzed method for pyridine-, azo-, and purine-directed olefinic and aromatic C(sp2)−H activation and regioselective annulation with alkynes for the synthesis of biologically useful quaternary ammonium salts. This approach notably eliminates the need for stoichiometric amounts of external oxidants, offering a broader substrate scope along with improved product regioselectivity under mild electrolysis conditions as compared to previously employed strong oxidant conditions. Detailed mechanistic insights, including the isolation, characterization, and cyclovoltammetric analysis of catalytically relevant iridium(III) and iridium(I) intermediates, provided strong supporting evidence for an Ir(III/I) catalytic cycle operation.

Abstract:Due to the lower LUMO energy level at β-position of α,β-unsaturated-β-trifluoromethyl enone than its non-fluorinated counterpart, there is a challenge to activate the sp2 C–H bond of aromatic ring. Herein, we have reported an Iridium(III) catalyzed β-trifluoromethyl enone carbonyl directed regio-selective aromatic C(sp2)-H olefination with acrylates under oxidative condition. Furthermore, coupling with natural products derived acrylates, scale-up and product diversification has also been performed.

Abstract:A tunable Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H bond functionalization of aryl imidates with cyclic 1,3-diones was developed. With suitable and straightforward reaction condition adjustments, the C-H bond functionalization of diverse aryl imidates with cyclic 1,3-diones occurred smoothly and precisely at room temperature. Accompanied by different directing group transformations, a series of corresponding aryl nitriles, hydrophenanthridin-1(2H)-ones, spiro isoindoles, or hydrophenanthridine-1,6(2H,5H)-diones were synthesized in good yields to provide a rational directing group utilization strategy for the Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H bond activation. Control experiments and primary mechanistic studies revealed that solvent effects and functional group electronic effects might influence the reaction's selectivity.

Abstract:A hitherto unknown class of C4-symmetric Caryl−Cβ (C3, C8, C13, C18) axially chiral porphyrins has been synthesized and the application of their iridium (Ir) complexes in catalytic asymmetric C(sp3)−H functionalization is documented. Cyclotetramerization of enantioenriched axially chiral 2-hydroxymethyl-3-naphthyl pyrroles under mild acidic conditions affords, after oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), the C4-symmetric α,α,α,α-atropenantiomer as an only isolable diastereomer. Both regioisomeric Ir(Por*)(CO)(Cl) complexes catalyze the carbene C−H insertion reaction affording the same enantiomer, albeit with slight difference in enantioselectivity. With the optimum Ir-complex 3e, the 2-substituted arylacetic acid derivatives were generated from diazo compounds and cyclohexadiene in excellent yields and enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Aryl-aryl bond formation constitutes one of the most important subjects in organic synthesis. The recent developments in direct arylation reactions forming aryl-aryl bond have emerged as very attractive alternatives to traditional cross-coupling reactions. Here, we describe a general palladium-catalyzed direct arylation and cyclization of o-iodobiaryls to build a library of tetraphenylenes. This transformation represents one of the very few examples of C-H activation process that involves simultaneous formation of two aryl-aryl bonds. Oxygen plays a vital role by ensuring high reactivity, with air as the promoter furnished the best results. We anticipate this ligand-free and aerobic catalytic system will simplify the synthesis of tetraphenylenes as many of the reported methods involve use of preformed organometallic reagents and will lead to the discovery of highly efficient new direct arylation process.

Abstract:A new strategy for the sequential formation of aryl and amidyl C-N bonds is reported. Using trichloroethoxysulfonyl azide as a bifunctional nitrogen source, Ir-catalyzed aryl C-H sulfonamidation and subsequent desulfonative amide formation proceed effectively without any need of oxidants or coupling reagents. This protocol is suitable for readily available benzamides and stable carboxylates including primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl, alkenyl, and phenyl carboxylates, thereby providing a direct and efficient method for the synthesis of biologically and chemically useful N-arylamides.

Abstract:Disclosed herein is a rhodium(III)-catalyzed direct heteroarylation reaction between unactivated aliphatic C(sp3)-H bonds in 2-alkylpyridines and heteroaryl organoboron reagents. This catalytic protocol is compatible with various heterocyclic boronates containing ortho- and meta-pyridine, pyrazoles, furan, and quinoline with strong coordination capability. The achievement of this methodology provides an efficient route to build new C(sp3)-heteroaryl bonds.

Abstract:Direct functionalization of C–H bonds is the most expeditious strategy to build complexity into organic molecules. Unfortunately, most Pd-catalyzed C–H arylation strategies require high temperatures or stoichiometric oxidants. The creation of metallaphotoredox C–H arylation in 2011 forged a new pathway to achieve arylation at room temperature. Since this discovery, most reports still use explosive diazonium salts as aryl radical precursors. Alternatively, a single report uses bench-stable diaryliodonium salts, albeit with an Ir-based pho-tocatalyst. Herein, we develop an organophotoredox manifold that enables Pd-catalyzed C–H arylation of numerous N-aryl amide sub-strates including the preparation of unsymmetrical m-terphenyl products. The results we present are expected to revitalize the use of dia-ryliodonium salts to achieve room temperature arylations of wide-ranging C–H bond classes.
