Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:Frequency conversion processes, such as second- and third-harmonic generation, are commonly realized in nonlinear optics, offering opportunities for applications in photonics, chemistry, material science and biosensing. Given the inherently weak nonlinear response of natural materials, optically large samples and complex phase-matching techniques are typically required to realize significant nonlinear responses. To produce similar effects in much smaller volumes, current research has been devoted to the quest of synthesizing novel materials with enhanced optical nonlinearities at moderate input intensities. In particular, several approaches to engineer the nonlinear properties of artificial materials, metamaterials and metasurfaces have been introduced. Here, we review the current state of the art in the field of small-scale nonlinear optics, with special emphasis on high-harmonic generation from ultrathin metasurfaces based on plasmonic and high-index dielectric resonators, as well as semiconductor-loaded plasmonic metasurfaces. In this context, we also discuss recent advances in controlling the optical wavefront of generated nonlinear waves using metasurfaces. Finally, we compare viable approaches to enhance nonlinearities in ultrathin metasurfaces, and we offer an outlook on the future development of this exciting field of research.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces have recently emerged as the game changer in light manipulation and opened up new perspectives in many subfields of optics and photonics. Recent developments in nonlocal metasurfaces, in which the nanoscale building blocks respond to the incoming light collectively rather than as individual objects, are especially promising for enhancing and controlling the nonlinear optical phenomena. In this article, we provide a brief overview of the basic principles of nonlocal metasurfaces in the context of their nonlinear optical functionalities. We discuss the origin and the regimes of the nonlocal response, covering the aspects of multiple scattering, radiation damping, quality factor, local-field enhancement, and temporal dynamics. Some important aspects are illustrated by computational examples. We also give our personal viewpoint on the selected ideas and research directions in nonlocal and nonlinear metasurfaces, including the role of spatial symmetry in nonlocal interactions, the effects of phase and momentum matching in frequency conversion, as well as the possibilities offered by new material platforms and novel concepts, such as bound states in the continuum, parity–time symmetry, and time-variant metasurfaces.

Abstract:Among the most prominent effects enabled by optical nonlinearities is the generation of correlated and entangled photons. Recent progress in nonlinear optical metasurfaces opens a pathway to arrange photon sources in subwavelength configurations for advanced photon state control. In this work, the latest results in this emergent area of research are reviewed. Among the most prominent effects resulting from nonlinear light–matter interaction is the generation of correlated and entangled photons through various processes, notably via spontaneous parametric down‐conversion or spontaneous four‐wave mixing. Such nonlinear optical processes benefit from the concentration of electromagnetic fields in small volumes. Dielectric nanoresonators and their 2D layouts—metasurfaces—provide efficient ways to control light in subwavelength volumes enabling the enhancement of nonlinear light–matter interaction and the generation of entangled photons. Nanoresonators and metasurfaces offer a radical miniaturization of quantum light sources allowing better scalability, which opens a pathway toward arrangements of photon sources in complex subwavelength configurations for advanced photon state control. In this work, the recent progress in this emergent area of research is reviewed.

Abstract:Abstract Nonlinear optical effects have enabled numerous applications such as laser frequency conversion, ultrafast electro-optical, and all-optical modulation. Both gaseous and bulk media have conventionally been used for free-space nonlinear optical applications, yet they often require complex phase-matching techniques for efficient operation and may have limited operation bandwidth due to the material absorption. In the last decade, meta-optics made of subwavelength antennas or films have emerged as novel nonlinear optical media that may potentially overcome certain limitations of bulk crystals. Due to resonant enhancements of the pump laser field as well as the use of materials with extreme nonlinearity such as epsilon-near-zero materials, meta-optics can achieve strong nonlinear responses with a subwavelength thickness. Here, we review several nonlinear optical applications, such as electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation, entangled photon pair generation, terahertz generation, all-optical modulation, and high-harmonic generation that we envision meta-optics may have distinct advantages over their bulk counterparts. We outline the challenges still faced by nonlinear meta-optics and point out some potential directions.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces incorporate many of the functionalities of their linear counterparts such as wavefront shaping but simultaneously they perform nonlinear optical transformations. This dual functionality leads to a rather unintuitive physical behavior which is still widely unexplored for many photonic applications. The nonlinear processes render some basic principles governing the functionality of linear metasurfaces not directly applicable, such as the superposition principle and the geometric optics approximation. On the other hand, nonlinear metasurfaces facilitate new phenomena that are not possible in the linear regime. Here, we study the imaging of objects through a dielectric nonlinear metalens. We illuminate objects by infrared light and record their generated images at the visible third-harmonic wavelengths. We revisit the classical lens theory and suggest a generalized Gaussian lens equation for nonlinear imaging, verified both experimentally and analytically. We also demonstrate experimentally higher-order spatial correlations facilitated by the nonlinear metalens, resulting in additional image features.

Abstract:In recent years, metasurface has received extensive attention in the field of classical light control, and excellent results have been obtained. At the same time, the application of metasurface in nonlinear optics and quantum optics has also attracted more and more interest. The basic principles and applications of nonlinear metasurface and quantum metasurface were introduced, and the related reports in recent years were summarized, including the harmonic generation and enhancement, the relationship between harmonic generation and symmetry, the nonlinear phase control and holography, and the generation, measurement and manipulation of entangled photon based on metasurface. Finally, the potential application of metasurface in these two fields were prospected.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are ultrathin structured surfaces that are capable of manipulating the propagation of light in an arbitrary manner. It has been endowed with various functionalities ranging from imaging to holography. In contrast to linear optical processes, the control of wave propagation and diffraction over nonlinear optical processes such as harmonic generations had been much more limited until recently, when the concept of metasurfaces was extended from linear optics to the nonlinear optical regime for manipulating the generation of harmonic signals in an unprecedented level. The key to this recent development lies in the local control over the phase and/or the amplitude of nonlinear polarizability. This new development has led to an array of interesting optical phenomena and nonlinear optical devices that went beyond what had been achieved with traditional nonlinear optical elements. In this review, we summarize the latest progress in controlling the local phase of nonlinearity with plasmonic metasurfaces, with a focus on nonlinear geometric Berry phase and wavefront engineering, and various device applications with nonlinear metasurfaces.

Abstract:Abstract Metasurfaces are artificial two-dimensional (2D) planar surfaces that consist of subwavelength ‘meta-atoms’ (i.e. metallic or dielectric nanostructures). They are known for their capability to achieve better and more efficient light control in comparison to their traditional optical counterparts. Abrupt and sharp changes in the electromagnetic properties can be induced by the metasurfaces rather than the conventional gradual accumulation that requires greater propagation distances. Based on this feature, planar optical components like mirrors, lenses, waveplates, isolators and even holograms with ultrasmall thicknesses have been developed. Most of the current metasurface studies have focused on tailoring the linear optical effects for applications such as cloaking, lens imaging and 3D holography. Recently, the use of metasurfaces to enhance nonlinear optical effects has attracted significant attention from the research community. Benefiting from the resulting efficient nonlinear optical processes, the fabrication of integrated all-optical nano-devices with peculiar functionalities including broadband frequency conversions and ultrafast optical switching will become achievable. Plasmonic excitation is one of the most effective approaches to increase nonlinear optical responses due to its induced strong local electromagnetic field enhancement. For instance, continuous phase control on the effective nonlinear polarizability of plasmonic metasurfaces has been demonstrated through spin-rotation light coupling. The phase of the nonlinear polarization can be continuously tuned by spatially changing the meta-atoms’ orientations during second and third harmonic generation processes, while the nonlinear metasurfaces also exhibit homogeneous linear properties. In addition, an ultrahigh second-order nonlinear susceptibility of up to 10 4 pm V −1 has recently been reported by coupling the plasmonic modes of patterned metallic arrays with intersubband transition of multi-quantum-well layered substrate. In order to develop ultra-planar nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces, 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been extensively studied based on their unique nonlinear optical properties. The third-order nonlinear coefficient of graphene is five times that of gold substrate, while TMDC materials also exhibit a strong second-order magnetic susceptibility. In this review, we first focus on the main principles of planar nonlinear plasmonics based on metasurfaces and 2D nonlinear materials. The advantages and challenges of incorporating 2D nonlinear materials into metasurfaces are discussed, followed by their potential applications including orbital angular momentum manipulating and quantum optics.

Abstract:Metasurfaces refer to the optical nanoantenna arrays composed of subwavelength structures. Nanoantennas can have resonances under appropriate excitation conditions, to achieve near-field enhancement, and thus enhancing nonlinear optical effects. Compared with conventional nonlinear optical crystals, metasurfaces are more compact, with the possibility for on-chip integration. Due to the subwavelength light-matter interaction length, for applications such as nonlinear harmonic generation, metasurfaces does not suffer from the limitation of phase-matching. In addition, metasurfaces own the subwavelength spatial resolution. By designing and arranging the meta-atoms, metasurfaces can realize flexible control of the phase, polarization, and amplitude of the harmonic wave. Recent works on nonlinear metasurfaces for applications in optical frequency conversion, nonlinear wavefront control and ultrafast all-optical modulation were reviewed, the challenges and perspectives for the practical application of metasurfaces were presented.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics is an important area of photonics research for realizing active optical functionalities such as light emission, frequency conversion, and ultrafast optical switching for applications in optical communication, material processing, precision measurements, spectroscopic sensing and label-free biological imaging. An emerging topic in nonlinear optics research is to realize high efficiency optical functionalities in ultra-small, sub-wavelength length scale structures by leveraging interesting optical resonances in surface relief metasurfaces. Such artificial surfaces can be engineered to support high quality factor resonances for enhanced nonlinear optical interaction by leveraging interesting physical mechanisms. The aim of this review article is to give an overview of the emerging field of nonlinear optics in dielectric based sub-wavelength periodic structures to realize efficient harmonic generators, wavelength mixers, optical switches etc. Dielectric metasurfaces support the realization of high quality-factor resonances with electric field concentrated either inside or in the vicinity of the dielectric media, while at the same time operate at high optical intensities without damage. The periodic dielectric structures considered here are broadly classified into guided-mode resonant structures and resonant metasurfaces. The basic physical mechanisms behind guided-mode resonances, electromagnetically-induced transparency like resonances and bound-states in continuum resonances in periodic photonic structures are discussed. Various nonlinear optical processes studied in such structures with example implementations are also reviewed. Finally, some future directions of interest in terms of realizing large-area metasurfaces, techniques for enhancing the efficiency of the nonlinear processes, heterogenous integration, and extension to non-conventional wavelength ranges in the ultra-violet and infrared region are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Extreme terahertz (THz) science and technologies, the next disruptive frontier in nonlinear optics, provide multifaceted capabilities for exploring strong light‐matter interactions in a variety of physical systems. However, current techniques involve the need for an extremely high‐field free space THz source that is difficult to generate and has limited investigations to a rather weak and linear regime of light‐matter interactions. Therefore, new approaches are being sought for the tight confinement of THz waves that can induce nonlinear effects. Here, a nonlinear “tera‐nano” metasurface is demonstrated exhibiting extremely large THz nonlinearity and sensitive self‐modulation of resonances at moderate incident THz field strengths. A record deep‐subwavelength (≈λ/33 000) confinement of strongly enhanced ( ≈ 3200) THz field in a nano‐gap (15 nm) exhibits remarkable THz field‐tailored nonlinearity. Further, ultrafast injection of photocarriers reveals a competition between nonlinear THz field‐induced intervalley scattering and optically driven interband excitations. The results on “tera‐nano” metasurfaces enable a novel platform to realize enhanced nonlinear nano/micro composites for field‐sensitive extreme THz nonlinear applications without the need for intense THz light sources.

Abstract:We review the physics and some applications of photonic structures designed for the realisation of strong $\textit{nonlinear chiroptical response}$. We pay much attention to the recent strategy of utilizing different types of $\textit{optical resonances}$ in metallic and dielectric subwavelength structures and metasurfaces, including surface plasmon resonances, Mie resonances, lattice guided modes, and bound states in the continuum. We summarize earlier results and discuss more recent developments for achieving large circular dichroism combined with the high efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:The optical elements comprised of sub-diffractive light scatterers, or metasurfaces, hold a promise to reduce the footprint and unfold new functionalities of optical devices. A particular interest is focused on metasurfaces for manipulation of phase and amplitude of light beams. Characterisation of metasurfaces can be performed using interferometry, which, however, may be cumbersome, specifically in the infrared (IR) range. Here, we realise a new method for characterising IR metasurfaces based on nonlinear interference, which uses accessible components for visible light. Correlated IR and visible photons are launched into a nonlinear interferometer so that the phase profile, imposed by the metasurface on the IR photons, modifies the interference at the visible photon wavelength. Furthermore, we show that this concept can be used for broadband manipulation of the intensity profile of a visible beam using a single IR metasurface. Our method unfolds the potential of quantum interferometry for the characterization of advanced optical elements.

Abstract:Abstract Nonradiating sources of energy have traditionally been studied in quantum mechanics and astrophysics but have received very little attention in the photonics community. This situation has changed recently due to a number of pioneering theoretical studies and remarkable experimental demonstrations of the exotic states of light in dielectric resonant photonic structures and metasurfaces, with the possibility to localize efficiently the electromagnetic fields of high intensities within small volumes of matter. These recent advances underpin novel concepts in nanophotonics and provide a promising pathway to overcome the problem of losses usually associated with metals and plasmonic materials for the efficient control of light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. This review paper provides a general background and several snapshots of the recent results in this young yet prominent research field, focusing on two types of nonradiating states of light that both have been recently at the center of many studies in all-dielectric resonant meta-optics and metasurfaces: optical anapoles and photonic bound states in the continuum . We discuss a brief history of these states in optics, as well as their underlying physics and manifestations, and also emphasize their differences and similarities. We also review some applications of such novel photonic states in both linear and nonlinear optics for the nanoscale field enhancement, a design of novel dielectric structures with high- Q resonances, nonlinear wave mixing, and enhanced harmonic generation, as well as advanced concepts for lasing and optical neural networks.
