Abstract:Nonlinear dielectric metasurfaces provide a promising platform to control and manipulate the optical frequency conversion at the nanoscale, suggesting new applications in imaging, lasing, and sensing. Here, we engage symmetry-broken silicon metasurfaces to enhance the second- and third-harmonic generation. We design and fabricate amorphous silicon metasurfaces supporting optical bound states in the continuum and guided-mode resonances, which greatly boost light-matter interaction resulting in several-order enhancements in both second-and third-harmonic generation.

Abstract:Frequency conversion processes, such as second- and third-harmonic generation, are commonly realized in nonlinear optics, offering opportunities for applications in photonics, chemistry, material science and biosensing. Given the inherently weak nonlinear response of natural materials, optically large samples and complex phase-matching techniques are typically required to realize significant nonlinear responses. To produce similar effects in much smaller volumes, current research has been devoted to the quest of synthesizing novel materials with enhanced optical nonlinearities at moderate input intensities. In particular, several approaches to engineer the nonlinear properties of artificial materials, metamaterials and metasurfaces have been introduced. Here, we review the current state of the art in the field of small-scale nonlinear optics, with special emphasis on high-harmonic generation from ultrathin metasurfaces based on plasmonic and high-index dielectric resonators, as well as semiconductor-loaded plasmonic metasurfaces. In this context, we also discuss recent advances in controlling the optical wavefront of generated nonlinear waves using metasurfaces. Finally, we compare viable approaches to enhance nonlinearities in ultrathin metasurfaces, and we offer an outlook on the future development of this exciting field of research.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics is an important area of photonics research for realizing active optical functionalities such as light emission, frequency conversion, and ultrafast optical switching for applications in optical communication, material processing, precision measurements, spectroscopic sensing and label-free biological imaging. An emerging topic in nonlinear optics research is to realize high efficiency optical functionalities in ultra-small, sub-wavelength length scale structures by leveraging interesting optical resonances in surface relief metasurfaces. Such artificial surfaces can be engineered to support high quality factor resonances for enhanced nonlinear optical interaction by leveraging interesting physical mechanisms. The aim of this review article is to give an overview of the emerging field of nonlinear optics in dielectric based sub-wavelength periodic structures to realize efficient harmonic generators, wavelength mixers, optical switches etc. Dielectric metasurfaces support the realization of high quality-factor resonances with electric field concentrated either inside or in the vicinity of the dielectric media, while at the same time operate at high optical intensities without damage. The periodic dielectric structures considered here are broadly classified into guided-mode resonant structures and resonant metasurfaces. The basic physical mechanisms behind guided-mode resonances, electromagnetically-induced transparency like resonances and bound-states in continuum resonances in periodic photonic structures are discussed. Various nonlinear optical processes studied in such structures with example implementations are also reviewed. Finally, some future directions of interest in terms of realizing large-area metasurfaces, techniques for enhancing the efficiency of the nonlinear processes, heterogenous integration, and extension to non-conventional wavelength ranges in the ultra-violet and infrared region are discussed.

Abstract:Strong nonlinear light-matter interaction is highly sought-after for a variety of applications including lasing and all-optical light modulation. Recently, resonant plasmonic structures have been considered promising candidates for enhancing nonlinear optical processes due to their ability to greatly enhance the optical near-field; however, their small mode volumes prevent the inherently large nonlinear susceptibility of the metal from being efficiently exploited. Here, we present an alternative approach that utilizes a Fano-resonant silicon metasurface. The metasurface results in strong near-field enhancement within the volume of the silicon resonator while minimizing two photon absorption. We measure a third harmonic generation enhancement factor of 1.5 × 10(5) with respect to an unpatterned silicon film and an absolute conversion efficiency of 1.2 × 10(-6) with a peak pump intensity of 3.2 GW cm(-2). The enhanced nonlinearity, combined with a sharp linear transmittance spectrum, results in transmission modulation with a modulation depth of 36%. The modulation mechanism is studied by pump-probe experiments.

Abstract:Nonlinear dielectric metasurfaces provide a promising approach to control and manipulate frequency conversion optical processes at the nanoscale, thus facilitating both advances in fundamental research and the development of new practical applications in photonics, lasing, and sensing. Here, we employ symmetry-broken metasurfaces made of centrosymmetric amorphous silicon for resonantly enhanced second- and third-order nonlinear optical response. Exploiting the rich physics of optical quasi-bound states in the continuum and guided mode resonances, we comprehensively study through rigorous numerical calculations the relative contribution of surface and bulk effects to second-harmonic generation (SHG) and the bulk contribution to third-harmonic generation (THG) from the meta-atoms. Next, we experimentally achieve optical resonances with high quality factors, which greatly boosts light-matter interaction, resulting in about 550 times SHG enhancement and nearly 5000-fold increase of THG. A good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental measurements is observed. To gain deeper insights into the physics of the investigated nonlinear optical processes, we further numerically study the relation between nonlinear emission and the structural asymmetry of the metasurface and reveal that the generated harmonic signals arising from linear sharp resonances are highly dependent on the asymmetry of the meta-atoms. Our work suggests a fruitful strategy to enhance the harmonic generation and effectively control different orders of harmonics in all-dielectric metasurfaces, enabling the development of efficient active photonic nanodevices.
Nonlinear van der Waals metasurfaces with resonantly enhanced light generation

Abstract:Efficient nonlinear wave mixing is of paramount importance for a wide range of applications. However, weak optical nonlinearities pose significant challenges for accessing nonlinear light-matter interaction in compact systems. Here, we experimentally study second harmonic generation in deeply subwavelength 3R-MoS2 metasurfaces (<\lambda/13 thick). Our measurements, supported by theoretical analysis, reveal a complex interplay and coupling between geometric resonances, optical extinction, and strong nonlinear susceptibility dispersion near excitons. We further demonstrate >150-fold enhancement in second harmonic signal at 740 nm driven by the A exciton resonance. Additionally, our theoretical studies predict an enhancement of more than 10^6 in second harmonic generation in <100 nm thick structures exhibiting bound states in the continuum resonance. These findings provide insight into accessing and harnessing the unprecedented 3R-MoS2 nonlinearities at a subwavelength scale, paving the way for ultracompact nonlinear photonic devices.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces have recently emerged as the game changer in light manipulation and opened up new perspectives in many subfields of optics and photonics. Recent developments in nonlocal metasurfaces, in which the nanoscale building blocks respond to the incoming light collectively rather than as individual objects, are especially promising for enhancing and controlling the nonlinear optical phenomena. In this article, we provide a brief overview of the basic principles of nonlocal metasurfaces in the context of their nonlinear optical functionalities. We discuss the origin and the regimes of the nonlocal response, covering the aspects of multiple scattering, radiation damping, quality factor, local-field enhancement, and temporal dynamics. Some important aspects are illustrated by computational examples. We also give our personal viewpoint on the selected ideas and research directions in nonlocal and nonlinear metasurfaces, including the role of spatial symmetry in nonlocal interactions, the effects of phase and momentum matching in frequency conversion, as well as the possibilities offered by new material platforms and novel concepts, such as bound states in the continuum, parity–time symmetry, and time-variant metasurfaces.

Abstract:We review the physics and some applications of photonic structures designed for the realisation of strong $\textit{nonlinear chiroptical response}$. We pay much attention to the recent strategy of utilizing different types of $\textit{optical resonances}$ in metallic and dielectric subwavelength structures and metasurfaces, including surface plasmon resonances, Mie resonances, lattice guided modes, and bound states in the continuum. We summarize earlier results and discuss more recent developments for achieving large circular dichroism combined with the high efficiency of nonlinear harmonic generation.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces incorporate many of the functionalities of their linear counterparts such as wavefront shaping but simultaneously they perform nonlinear optical transformations. This dual functionality leads to a rather unintuitive physical behavior which is still widely unexplored for many photonic applications. The nonlinear processes render some basic principles governing the functionality of linear metasurfaces not directly applicable, such as the superposition principle and the geometric optics approximation. On the other hand, nonlinear metasurfaces facilitate new phenomena that are not possible in the linear regime. Here, we study the imaging of objects through a dielectric nonlinear metalens. We illuminate objects by infrared light and record their generated images at the visible third-harmonic wavelengths. We revisit the classical lens theory and suggest a generalized Gaussian lens equation for nonlinear imaging, verified both experimentally and analytically. We also demonstrate experimentally higher-order spatial correlations facilitated by the nonlinear metalens, resulting in additional image features.

Abstract:Resonant photonic nanostructures exhibiting enhanced nonlinear responses and efficient frequency conversion are an emergent platform in nonlinear optics. High-index semiconductor metasurfaces with rapidly tuned high-Q resonances enable a novel class of time-variant metasurfaces, which expands the toolbox of color management at the nanoscale. Here, we report on the dynamic control of the nonlinear optical response in time-variant semiconductor metasurfaces supporting high-quality factor resonances in the near-infrared spectral range. Pump-probe measurements of germanium metasurfaces at negative pump-probe time delays reveals frequency conversion in the fundamental beam and a blue-shift of 10~nm (3.05$\omega$) and 40% broadening in the third harmonic signal due to the photoinduced time-variant refractive index. A time-dependent coupled-mode theory, in excellent agreement with the experimental data, validated the time-variant nature of the system. Our findings expand the scope of time-variant metasurfaces and may serve as base for the next generation of nanoscale pulse shapers, optical switches and light sources.

Abstract:Resonant dielectric metasurfaces were extensively studied in the linear and static regime of operation, targeting mainly wavefront shaping, polarization control and spectral filtering applications. Recently, an increasing amount of research focused on active tuning and nonlinear effects of these metasurfaces, unveiling their potential for novel nonlinear and reconfigurable optical devices. These may find many applications in imaging systems, compact adaptive optical systems, beam steering, holographic displays, and quantum optics, to just name a few. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in this field. Following a general introduction to resonant dielectric metasurfaces, the current state-of-the-art regarding the enhancement and tailoring of nonlinear frequency conversion processes using such metasurfaces is discussed. Next, we review different approaches to realize tunable dielectric metasurfaces, including ultrafast all-optical switching of the metasurface response. Finally, future directions and possible applications of nonlinear and tunable dielectric metasurfaces will be outlined.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes are important in many fields of photonics, ranging from biomedical imaging to ultrafast spectroscopy [1]. Thanks to recent progress in nanophotonics and metamaterials, there is a growing demand for smaller and more efficient nonlinear optical components. Unfortunately, it is very challenging to satisfy this demand by using traditional materials, which motivates the search for alternative approaches. Nonlinear plasmonics has recently emerged as a potential solution for enabling more efficient nanoscale nonlinear optics [2]. However, it is not yet clear how nonlinear responses of metamaterials can be enhanced sufficiently to enable practical nonlinear applications. Recent attempts to find the solution to this issue have been focused on two enhancement strategies, which are both based on resonance engineering. First, nanoparticle arrays associated with collective and narrow plasmon resonances with relatively high quality factors (Q-factors) known as surface lattice resonances (SLRs) have been utilized [3]–[5]. Second, multiply-resonant nanostructures have been investigated where the resonance enhancement occurring both at the input and output wavelengths results in strong nonlinear response [6]. Here, we combine these two concepts to enable even higher overall enhancement.

Abstract:Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant frequencies unaffected. Our devices attain this functionality by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum encoded with a spatially varying geometric phase. We leverage this capability to experimentally realize a versatile platform for multispectral wavefront shaping where a stack of metasurfaces, each supporting multiple independently controlled quasi-bound states in the continuum, molds the optical wavefront distinctively at multiple wavelengths and yet stay transparent over the rest of the spectrum. Such a platform is scalable to the visible for applications in augmented reality and transparent displays.

Abstract:Metasurfaces refer to the optical nanoantenna arrays composed of subwavelength structures. Nanoantennas can have resonances under appropriate excitation conditions, to achieve near-field enhancement, and thus enhancing nonlinear optical effects. Compared with conventional nonlinear optical crystals, metasurfaces are more compact, with the possibility for on-chip integration. Due to the subwavelength light-matter interaction length, for applications such as nonlinear harmonic generation, metasurfaces does not suffer from the limitation of phase-matching. In addition, metasurfaces own the subwavelength spatial resolution. By designing and arranging the meta-atoms, metasurfaces can realize flexible control of the phase, polarization, and amplitude of the harmonic wave. Recent works on nonlinear metasurfaces for applications in optical frequency conversion, nonlinear wavefront control and ultrafast all-optical modulation were reviewed, the challenges and perspectives for the practical application of metasurfaces were presented.

Abstract:Nonlinear metasurfaces offer a new paradigm to realize optical nonlinear devices with new and unparalleled behavior compared to nonlinear crystals, due to the interplay between photonic resonances and materials properties. The complicated interdependency between efficiency and emission directionality of the nonlinear optical signal on the existence, localization, and lifetimes of photonic resonances, as well as on the nonlinear susceptibility, makes it extremely difficult to design optimal metasurfaces using conventional materials and geometries. Inverse design using topology optimization is a powerful design tool for photonic structures, but traditional approaches developed for linear photonics are not suitable for such high dimensional nonlinear problems. Here, we use a topology optimization approach to inverse-design a fabrication-robust nonlinear metasurface that includes quantum-engineered resonant nonlinearities in semiconductor heterostructures for efficient and directional second harmonic generation. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that under practical constraints, among all the parameters, the nonlinear modal overlap emerges as the dominant parameter that enhances conversion efficiency, a finding that contrasts with intuition-driven studies that often emphasize Purcell enhancement. Our results open new opportunities for optimizing nonlinear processes in nanophotonic structures for novel light sources, quantum information applications, and communication.
