Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:To probe the efficient strategy for preparing a multifunctional sensing material, the facile synthesis strategies and successful examples are urgently required. Through the utilization of a hexadentate ligand derived from cyclotriphosphazene, which displays spiral configurations and multiple connection modes, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) was constructed via one-step synthesis from low-cost raw materials. The presence of multiple interaction sites decorating the helical channels of the reported MOF gives rise to exclusive solvochromic-sensing behavior for small ketone molecules such as acetone, acetophenone, and 2,5-diketohexane. Additionally, the helical structure of a manganese-carboxylate chain allows for the pore volume not only be available for the adsorption of large organic molecules but also enables the enantiopure selective separation of 1-phenylethanol (ee 35.99 %). Furthermore, the structural analysis of the acetophenone-encapsulated sample allowed the solvochromic mechanism to be elucidated, which should be ascribed to the strong hydrogen-bonding interaction between the guest molecules and specific sites on a host matrix. The experimental results have not only clearly manifested the vital role of starting materials of MOFs, including the connection modes and spatial configuration, but also have provided very valuable insight for the future assembly of novel multifunctional sensing materials.

Abstract:By incorporating an anthracene moiety into a framework, a multiresponsive luminescent metal-organic framework (1) has been synthesized, which exhibits both direct chemiluminescence (CL) and dual tunable photoluminescence. By utilizing the CL, 1 has been explored as a selective visual sensor for hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, 1 also exhibits tunable fluorescence response toward different analytes. For electron-rich aromatics, "turn-on" and "turnoff" responses can be simply switched by varying the excitation wavelength. For nitroaromatics, 1 exhibits novel linear quantitative quenching response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments have been carried out to study the unique fluorescence response. The multiple luminescence properties and dual tunable sensing response indicate that incorporating anthracene moieties into frameworks should be a promising strategy to develop unprecedented luminescent materials with remarkable sensing properties.

Abstract:Luminescent open metal sites within a microporous Eu(BTC) (see figure, BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) metal-organic framework are used for binding and sensing small molecules. The small molecules, such as dimethyl formamide, acetone, and ethanol exhibit different enhancing and quenching effects on the luminescence intensity of Eu(BTC). These specific properties may allow the use of such frameworks as sensors for small molecules.

Abstract:A multifunctional lanthanide‐organic framework Tb−TCA (H3TCA = tricarboxytriphenylamine) comprising a triphenylamine moiety as an efficient luminescence sensitizer is synthesized by a solvothermal method and structurally characterized. Tb−TCA exhibits lanthanide‐based emission (540 nm) and triphenylamine emission (435 nm) after excitation at 350 nm and works as a luminescent chemosensor towards salicylaldehyde with a sensitivity of 10 ppm under optimized conditions. Tb−TCA features a high concentration of Lewis acid Tb3+ sites and Lewis base triphenylamine sites on its internal surfaces; it thus enables both Knoevenagel and cyanosilylation reactions in a size‐selective fashion. The ratiometric fluorescent response towards aldehydes (I540/I435) demonstrates that the absorption of the porous material is size selective, and the interactions between the aldehyde molecules and the Tb3+ ions play a dominant role in the absorption and activation of the aldehyde substrates. In particular, these studies provide opportunities to directly validate the sorption sites and the catalytic mechanism of the multifunctional Ln metal–organic framework material by luminescence.

Abstract:Two lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with similar structures have been synthesized through objective synthesis. The two compounds are both 2-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks. Topological analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are 6-connected pcu net. In addition, both structures were embedded in uncoordinated nitrogen atoms. As the uncoordinated pyridine groups can be used as functional groups, we tested their sensing ability toward metal ions and small organic molecules. To our delight, fluorescence measurements show the two complexes can selectively and sensitively detect for Fe3+ ion and nitromethane, which suggests that the two Ln-MOFs are promising bifunctional luminescence sensor materials with sensing metal ions and small organic molecules.

Abstract:A Tb-based metal–organic framework TbNTA H2O (TbNTA1, NTA=nitrilotriacetate) was synthesized and characterized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of anion incorporated TbNTA1 were investigated with the addition of the aqueous solution of different anions such as F−, Cl−, NO2−, CO32−, SO42− and PO43−. The luminescence intensity of the anion-incorporated TbNTA1 showed a different degree of changes, particularly for the PO43− incorporated TbNTA1, which showed a significant quenching effect. The unique selective detection of PO43− ions in water indicates that TbNTA1 is promising to be employed as a novel luminescence probe for phosphate ions in biological system.

Abstract:The rapid development of functionalization of lanthanide metal organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) offers the potential for biomarkers sensing. It is closely associated with biology science and clinic medicine. In this work, a porous and luminescent terbium metal-organic framework TbTATB has been designed and solvothermally synthesized. The PXRD results demonstrated the commendable stability of this sensor. Enhanced luminescence of TbTATB origin from Tb3+ was observed in the presence of Zn2+, which is a kind of biologically important ion. This turn-on pattern was utilized for sensing Zn2+. TbTATB exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards Zn2+ in aqueous solution with the detection limit of 10.5 nM. What's more, it has fairly acceptable bio-compatibility which was fully verified by cytotoxicity test. In the state of coexistence with living cells, visible increased green light of TbTATB emerged after the addition of Zn2+, while the survival state of cells was hardly disturbed. Markedly, this is the first time that a luminescent Tb-MOF can act as a sensor for sensing and imaging of Zn2+ ions simultaneously. What's more, the results also guide a new application direction of MOFs and supply a new way for the detection of other analytes in biological systems.

Abstract:A Tb-active metal-organic framework Tb(BTC)·(DMF)·(H2O) (1) was synthesized and characterized. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of Tb3+ ions in the partially desolvated compound Tb(BTC)·(DMF)0.8(H2O) (1a) were investigated as it was introduced into n-propanol mixed with other various solvents such as DMF, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and acetone. The fluorescence intensity of compound 1a emulsions in n-propanol increased and decreased remarkably with the additions of DMF and acetone solvents, respectively, whereas the changes in the luminescence intensity of that in other cases were not obvious, which indicated the compound is promising to be employed as a novel luminescent probe for certain of small organic molecules.

Abstract:A new yttrium metal-organic framework was synthesized by using 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid as ligand under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal structures and stability of MOF were characterized by X-ray Diffraction and Thermogravimetric Analyzer, respectively. In particular, Y-MOF exhibits sensitive and highly selective detection for Cu2+ ions, the detection limit can be as low as 0.1 μg/ml. Moreover, Y-MOF also exhibits high selectivity for small molecules such as nitrobenzene and o-chlorophenol and the detection limit are 5 mg/L and 10 mg/L, respectively. The luminescent behavior of Y-MOF signify a promising use as fluorescent probe for sensing of metal ions and small molecules.

Abstract:As the final product of purine metabolism, uric acid (UA) existing in urine and serum plays an important role in the body's metabolism, immunity and other functions. However, it is still difficult to sense UA in practice. Herein, a new terbium metal organic framework (Me2NH2)(2)[Tb-2(L)(2)]center dot(H2O)(6) (ZJU-158-Tb, ZJU = Zhejiang University, L = 1(3,5-dicarboxylatobenzyl)-3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid)for luminescent sensing of UA was designed and synthesized. It exhibits highly sensitive and selective detection to UA in aqueous solutions with a quite low detection limit of 7 nM by a luminescence turn-down phenomenon. Furthermore, the practical test papers made by ZJU-158-Tb possess fast monitoring ability for abnormal UA levels in artificial urine and serum through distinct colour change, which could be even distinguished by the naked eye.

Abstract:A new metal-organic framework, incorporated with the tetraphenylethylene moiety as four-point connected node and Nd(III) by the self-assembly strategy, has been synthesized (denoted as 1, [Nd(HTCPE)·CH3CH2O]n) and structurally characterized. The single crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that 1 contained a three-dimensional framework with infinite metallic chains. The porous feature of 1 shows the typical microporous adsorption of N2 molecules at 77 K. The benign luminescence of the tetraphenylethylene-based ligand provides this material ability as potential sensor via sensitive luminescence response. The experiments indicate that 1 could be regarded as a selective luminescent sensor of Cr2O7 2− toward a series of anions in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Using terephthalic acid (BDC) as the organic ligand and zirconium chloride (ZrCl 4 ) as the metal source, a lanthanide metal-organic framework (Tb/Zr-UiO-66) with excellent luminescence properties was successfully prepared by introducing the lanthanide ion Tb 3+ in situ through a simple one-pot hydrothermal reaction, which was designed as an optical biosensor for 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA), the urinary biomarker of human exposure to carbon disulfide (CS 2 ). The fabricated Tb/Zr-UiO-66 exhibits high chemical and luminescent stability, making it competent for recognizing TTCA in aqueous environments. Significantly, its luminescence intensity change shows a good linearity relationship with the concentration of TTCA in the range of 0-110 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.14 μM. Meanwhile, this sensor exhibits good selectivity and anti-interference ability towards TTCA among the various coexisting components in urine (Na + , K + , NH 4 + , SO 4 2− , Cl − , creatine, creatinine, glucose, urea, etc.), and can quickly respond to TTCA within 2 minutes. The analysis results of PXRD, fluorescence lifetime and UV-vis spectrum demonstrate that the sensing mechanism can be ascribed to the competition absorption effect between TCAA and Tb/Zr-UiO-66. This biosensor with simple synthesis, stable framework, high sensitivity and selectivity, and rapid response has potential to become a powerful tool for diagnosing diseases associated with CS 2 exposure.
