Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:We report here the investigation of using a luminescent europium organic framework, [Eu2(MTBC)(OH)2(DMF)3(H2O)4]·2DMF·7H2O (denoted as compound 1), for detecting of both Cu2+ and UO22+ with high sensitivity. Based on the spectroscopy analysis, compound 1 could selectively respond to Cu2+ and UO22+ ions among other selected monovalent, divalent, trivalent metal cations based on a turn-off mechanism. The detection limit of compound 1 towards Cu2+ ion was as low as 17.2 μg/L, which is much lower than the maximum tolerable concentration of Cu2+ in drinking water (2 mg/L) defined by United States Environmental Protection Agency. On the other hand, the detection limit towards UO22+ ions is 309.2 μg/L, which could be used for detecting uranium in relative severely contaminated areas. The concentration-dependent luminescence intensity evolution process could be fully understood by the absorption kinetics and isotherm investigations. Furthermore, the quenching mechanism was elucidated by the UV-vis, excitation, luminescence, and lifetime studies. Compound 1, as the first MOF based luminescence probe for both Cu2+ and UO22+ ions, provides insight into developing MOF-based multifunctional sensors for both nonradioactive and radioactive elements.

Abstract:A new yttrium metal-organic framework was synthesized by using 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid as ligand under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal structures and stability of MOF were characterized by X-ray Diffraction and Thermogravimetric Analyzer, respectively. In particular, Y-MOF exhibits sensitive and highly selective detection for Cu2+ ions, the detection limit can be as low as 0.1 μg/ml. Moreover, Y-MOF also exhibits high selectivity for small molecules such as nitrobenzene and o-chlorophenol and the detection limit are 5 mg/L and 10 mg/L, respectively. The luminescent behavior of Y-MOF signify a promising use as fluorescent probe for sensing of metal ions and small molecules.

Abstract:Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) have become a promising class of fluorescence sensing materials, however, the multi‐responsive LMOF sensors for organic compounds are rather rare. Herein, a water stable and highly efficient luminescent MOF with the formula of {[Zn(BBZB)(2,6‐NDC)]·solvents}n (JXUST‐10, BBZB = 4,7‐bis(1H‐benzimidazole‐1‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole and 2,6‐NDC = 2,6‐naphthalenedicarboxylate) was constructed by the incorporation of Zn2+ and two organic ligands (BBZB and 2,6‐NDC) featuring the conjugate system. JXUST‐10 is a three‐dimensional two‐fold interpenetrated framework with good fluorescent property. Based on the luminescent characteristic, JXUST‐10 can be used as a multi‐responsive sensor for detection of three different analytes including tetracycline, benzaldehyde and uric acid via different luminescent change behaviours. Remarkably, fluorescence test paper and LED light devices are used to detect analytes through the visual change of luminescence colour of JXUST‐10 from blue greenish to yellow greenish under ultraviolet light (365 nm) irradiation. Furthermore, the probable sensing mechanisms for three target analytes were also discussed. A water stable and highly efficient luminescence MOF (JXUST‐10) can simply sense tetracycline, benzaldehyde and uric acid via different fluorescence behaviour. Remarkably, fluorescence test paper and LED light devices are applied to detect benzaldehyde and uric acid through the visual change of luminescence color of JXUST‐10.

Abstract:Selective and sensitive detection of heavy metal ions is a theme of increasing scientific interest, great technological importance and extensive public concern. To realize this target, design of high-efficient and fluorescent materials as sensor is crucial yet challenging task. In this work, we describes the synthesis and functions of a new hydroxyl and imine groups functionalized covalent organic framework (COFs). The synthesized COFs-DT integrates multi-functionality such as extended π-conjugation framework, tunable functionality, regular pore structure, specific sites to interact with targets as well as robust chemical and thermal stability. COFs-DT shows strong and stable fluorescence when dispersed in isopropanol. The fluorescent property together with the unique bidentate ligand sites enables COFs-DT in the construction of a high-performance fluorescent sensor for detection of Cu2+ with high sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, we use a series of characterizations to investigate the fluorescence quenching mechanism and found the quenching through a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism with COFs-DT as donor and Cu2+ as acceptor. Our strategy not only highlights opportunities for utilizing COFs with integrated multiple unique nature as new type of fluorescent materials, but also expends the encapsulation scope of COFs for ion sensor in environmental field.

Abstract:Fluorescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal materials for sensors because of their adjustable pore size and functional groups, which provide them with favorable metal ion selective recognition. In this paper, a new cadmium-based MOF was synthesized using Cd(NO3)2·4H2O and 3,3′,5,5′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid by solvothermal method. CdBPTC owned three types of channels with dimensions of approximately 8.4 × 8.3 Å, 6.0 × 5.2 Å, 9.7 × 8.4 Å along a, b, and c axis, respectively. This MOF has high selectivity to ferric ions and shows excellent anti-inference ability toward many other cations. The results indicate that the fluorescence quenching efficiency of CdBPTC is close to 100% when the concentration of Fe3+ reaches 1.0 × 10−3 mol·L−1. Moreover, the luminescent intensity at 427 nm presents a linear relationship at a concentration range of 2.0 × 10−4~7.0 × 10−4 mol·L−1, which can be quantitatively expressed by the linear Stern–Volmer equation I0/I = 8489 [Fe3+] − 0.1400, which is comparable to the previously reported better-performing materials. Competitive energy absorption and ion exchange may be responsible for the variation in fluorescence intensity of CdBPTC in different Fe3+ concentrations.

Abstract:Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) as sensors showing highly efficient detection toward toxic heavy-metal ions are in high demand for human health and environmental protection. A novel nanocage-based N-rich LMOF (LCU-103) has been constructed and characterized. It is a 2-fold interpenetrating structure built from N-rich {Zn6(dttz)4} nanocages extended by N-donor ligand Hdpa [H3dttz = 4,5-di(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2H-1,2,3-triazole; Hdpa = 4,4′-dipyridylamine]. Notably, LCU-103 contains abundant N functional sites anchoring on both the windows of nanocages and the inner channels of the framework that can interact with metal ions and then recognize them. As a result, it can serve as a luminescent sensing material for detecting trace amounts of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions with low limits of detection (LODs) of 1.45 and 1.66 μM, respectively, through a luminescent quenching mechanism. Meanwhile, LCU-103 as a LMOF sensor exhibits several advantages such as high sensitivity, appropriate selectivity (for Fe3+ in H2O), recycling stability, and fast response times in N,N-dimethylformamide. Moreover, LCU-103 also displays good luminescent quenching activity toward Fe3+ in H2O and a simulated 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid biological system with low LODs of 1.51 and 1.52 μM, respectively. LCU-103 test papers were further prepared to offer easy and real-time detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions. Abstract:Sensitive and selective detection of copper ions (Cu 2+ ) using fluorometric methods is of growing significance due to their widespread industrial use, which poses severe environmental and health risks. Here, we reported a porphyrin-based luminescent metal-organic framework (labelling LMOF), Al-TCPP, which exhibits dual emission peaks at 467 and 646 nm upon excitation by a single wavelength. When exposed to Cu 2+ ions, the fluorescence peak at 646 nm reduces while the intensity of the 467 nm remains steady. This intriguing property enables the construction of a ratio-metric fluorescence sensor that utilizes an internal standard, significantly enhancing Cu 2+ sensing accuracy. Our study establishes a linear relationship (y = 0.0454x + 0.3081) between the fluorescence intensity ratio I 467 /I 646 and the Cu 2+ concentration, with a high correlation coefficient R 2 = 0.9943. Impressively, the present Al-TCPP achieves a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5.28 nM, one of the lowest reported values for Cu 2+ detection. The mechanism underlying this phenomenon involves charge transfer from TCPP ligands in Al-TCPP to Cu 2+ ions, as revealed by solid-state NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Utilizing Al-TCPP, we successfully developed test strips for the practical Cu 2+ detection. Furthermore, the present Al-TCPP has also effectively applied to determine low Cu 2+ content in various samples, including water, tea and serum. This study demonstrates the versatility and practical applicability of present Al-TCPP LMOF for selective detection of Cu 2+ ions in diverse environments.

Abstract:A novel 2-fold interpenetrating 3D luminescent cadmium-based metal−organic framework {[Cd 2 (3-bbpa) 2 (1,3-BDC) 2 ]·4H 2 O} n ( Cd-MOF , where 3-bbpa = N 1 , N 4 -di (pyridin-3-yl)fumaramide and 1,3-H 2 BDC = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid) was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. It is important to note that the Cd-MOF displays notable luminescence performance and stability over a wide pH range and in a variety of organic solvents. More significantly, the Cd-MOF is a strong contender for the sensitive and selective sensing of Fe 3+ , Cu 2+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− , MnO 4 − and NB. To the best of our knowledge, the Cd-MOF was a rare example of a multi-response luminescence sensor based on metal cations, anions and toxic organic solvents of Cd-MOF-based materials.

Abstract:The crystal structure of Cd-MOF-74 was obtained for the first time that possesses high sensitivity for the detection of copper ions from water and simulated biological fluids based on changes in luminescent intensity. Furthermore, Cd-MOF-74 could selectively remove Cu2+ from simulated biological fluids that contain Mg2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Na+, and K+. The adsorption capacity of this adsorbent for copper ions reached 189.5 mg g-1 and it quickly adsorbed copper ions within 10 minutes under 10 ppm Cu2+ in the simulated biological system. XPS, PXRD, and gas adsorption measurements revealed that this high sensitivity and selectivity of Cd-MOF-74 resulted from the partial substitution of Cd2+ by Cu2+ in the framework. Although many MOF materials have been employed for sensor or selective adsorption of Cu2+, Cd-MOF-74 is the first example of MOFs showing both capabilities in simulated biological fluids, which represents a pioneering work that extends the applications of MOF materials in the biological field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), self-assembled from metal ions with organic ligands, are well known for their intriguing framework topology, permanent porosity, and tunable optical properties and have shown great promise for a good number of applications. Over the past few years, luminescent MOFs have attracted growing attention, especially for developing various luminescent sensors, by virtue of their excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In this feature article, we highlight some of the recent significant progress in this active research field, and provide a comprehensive review on luminescent MOFs as sensory materials for diverse sensing applications including for metal ions, anions, small molecules and gases, nitroaromatics and explosives, temperature, as well as other aspects.
