Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

Abstract:A highly connected 3D metal-organic framework with tfz-d topology based on Zn(6)O(2) clusters and flexible carboxylate ligands has been synthesized. The obtained Zn-MOF shows solvatochromic behavior for fluorescence sensing of small molecules, gas adsorption properties and exceptional chemical stability and might have applications for separation and detection purposes.

Abstract:A Co-based mixed-ligand metal-organic framework (MOF), ZJU-109, is reported by utilizing 6-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid (H2pta) and 4,4'-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl (4,4'-bimbp) as double linkers. By tuning the d-PET process between ligands 4,4'-bimbp and H2pta, a fluorescent turn-on sensor for Fe3+ with a detection limit as low as 0.053 μM has been demonstrated.

Abstract:A nanotubular metal-organic framework (MOF), {[(WS(4)Cu(4))I(2)(dptz)(3)]·DMF}(n) (dptz = 3,6-di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) for sensing small solvent molecules is presented. When accommodating different solvent molecules as guests, the resulting inclusion compounds exhibit different colors depending on the solvent guests, and more interestingly, the band gaps of these solvent-included complexes are in linear correlation with the polarity of the guest solvents. The solvent molecules can be sensed by the changes of UV-vis spectra of the corresponding inclusion compounds, showing a new way of signal transduction as a new kind of sensor. The sensing by such a MOF occurs within the channel-containing material rather than on the external surface.

Abstract:Four new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Zn(L)(bpdc)]center dot 1.6H(2)O (1), [Co(L)(bpdc)]center dot H2O (2), [Ni-3(L)(2)(bptc)(2)(H2O)(10)]center dot 2H(2)O (3) and [Cd-2(L)(Hbptc)(2)] (4) were achieved by reactions of the corresponding metal salt with mixed organic ligands of 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-4-yl) benzene (L) and 4,4'-benzophenonedicarboxylic acid (H2bpdc) or biphenyl-2,4', 5-tricarboxylic acid (H(3)bptc). They exhibit varied structures: MOFs 1 and 4 are porous three-dimensional (3D) frameworks, while 2 is an infinite one-dimensional (1D) chain and 3 is a two-dimensional (2D) network. Remarkably, 1 and 4 can act as potential fluorescent materials for sensing Fe(III) ions and different ketone molecules with high selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, MOF 1 shows selective adsorption of CO2 over N-2.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), self-assembled from metal ions with organic ligands, are well known for their intriguing framework topology, permanent porosity, and tunable optical properties and have shown great promise for a good number of applications. Over the past few years, luminescent MOFs have attracted growing attention, especially for developing various luminescent sensors, by virtue of their excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In this feature article, we highlight some of the recent significant progress in this active research field, and provide a comprehensive review on luminescent MOFs as sensory materials for diverse sensing applications including for metal ions, anions, small molecules and gases, nitroaromatics and explosives, temperature, as well as other aspects.

Abstract:Three zinc metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {ZnL(chd)}(n) (1), ([Zn(L)(0.5)(oba)]center dot DMF center dot H2O)(n) (2) and {[Zn(L)(0.5)(sdb)]center dot H2O)(n) (3) [L = E, E-2,5-dihexyloxy-1,4-bis-(2-pyridin-vinyl)-benzene; H(2)chd = 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, H(2)oba = 4,4'-oxybisbenzoic acid, H(2)sdb = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid], have been hydrothermally synthesized. Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn(BIPA)(tfbdc)]n (1) and {[Cd(BIPA)(tfbdc)(H2O)]·DMF}n (2), were hydrothermally synthesized using the self-assembly of the "V-shape" BIPA ligand (bis(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine) and the H2tfbdc ligand (2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid) with Zn/Cd metal salts. 1 is a 2D hcb framework and 2 is a 2D sql network. Their applications in detecting metal and inorganic ions were also explored. The results indicate that 1 exhibits dual-responsive photoluminescence sensing for Fe3+ and Cr2O72- ions while 2 can detect Hg2+ and Cr2O72- ions.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional microporous metal-organic framework based on Zn(II) clusters with the formula {[Zn7(NDC)5.5(μ4-OH)3]·7DMF} n (1) (H2NDC = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) had been synthesized and characterized. The MOF 1 displays an uncommon bsn topology, which is based on a unique heptanuclear Zn7(OH)3(CO2)11 cluster as a secondary building unit. The MOF had been employed as a photocatalyst for the photodegradation of model organic dyes rhodamine B and methyl violet in light. The results of photocatalytic experiments showed that 1 can successfully be employed as the photocatalyst for the benign decomposition of these dyes. A mechanism for the photcatalysis exhibited by 1 had been proposed using the results of density of states (DOS) and partial DOS calculations. The fluorescence properties of the MOF have been investigated, which revealed that 1 could be exploited as the luminescent sensor to recognize Fe3+ ions with perceptible quenching (K sv = 6.55 × 104 M-1) and a limit of detection of 1.16 ppm.

Abstract:In this work, NH2‐containing organic ligand 5‐Aminoisophthalic acid (AIPA), and trans‐1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethene (bpe) were selected as organic ligands to construct a new two‐dimensional luminescent Zn(II) metal‐organic framework [Zn(AIPA)(bpe)1/2]·named MOF‐1. It is worth noting that MOF‐1 exhibited excellent thermal stability and chemical stability in common solvents and different pH aqueous solution. As we expected, the luminescence sensing investigations demonstrated that MOF‐1 could be deemed as a multifunctional fluorescence sensor toward Cr2O72‐ and Fe3+ via a "turn‐off" effect.Notably, MOF‐1 had high selectivity and sensitivity for Fe3+ and Cr2O72‐ with low detection limits of 9.72× 10‐5 M and 1.95× 10‐5 M, respectively. Furthermore, the possible quenching mechanisms were also explored in detail.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as chemical sensors have developed rapidly in recent years. There have been many papers concerning this field and interest is still growing. The reason is that the specific merits of MOFs can be utilized to enhance sensitivity and selectivity by various energy/charge transfers occurring among different ligands, ligand, and metal centers, such as from ligands to metal centers or metal centers to ligands, as well as from MOF skeletons to guest species. This review intends to provide an update on recent progress in various applications of different MOF-based sensors on the basis of their luminescent and electrochemical responses towards small molecules, gas molecules, ions (cations and anions), pH, humidity, temperature, and biomolecules. MOF-based sensors function by utilizing different mechanisms, including luminescent responses of "turn-on" and "turn-off", as well as electrochemical responses.

Abstract:A novel metal-organic framework with the formula [Zn3(DDB)(DPE)]·H2O (1) (H5DDB = 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid and DPE = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene) has been solvothermally synthesized by employing a rigid carboxylate ligand H5DDB to assemble with Zn(ii) ions in the presence of a flexible bis(pyridyl) linker DPE. The Zn-MOF is a 3D framework with six-nuclear clusters and possesses remarkable water stability and pH stability. Interestingly, complex 1 can sensitively and selectively sense Fe(iii), Cr(iii), Cr(vi), Mn(vii) and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-NA with low detection limits in aqueous solution. Moreover, complex 1 also exhibits selectivity for 2,6-Dich-4-NA detection in real samples including carrot, grape and nectarine extracts, and its detection ability is almost unchanged in the presence of the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The possible mechanisms of luminescence quenching have been explained by the weak affinity of nitrogen atoms, resonance energy transfer, and photoinduced electron transfer. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a MOF-based multiresponsive fluorescent probe for the simultaneous detection of Fe(iii), Cr(iii/vi), Mn(vii) and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-NA in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) have become a promising class of fluorescence sensing materials, however, the multi‐responsive LMOF sensors for organic compounds are rather rare. Herein, a water stable and highly efficient luminescent MOF with the formula of {[Zn(BBZB)(2,6‐NDC)]·solvents}n (JXUST‐10, BBZB = 4,7‐bis(1H‐benzimidazole‐1‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole and 2,6‐NDC = 2,6‐naphthalenedicarboxylate) was constructed by the incorporation of Zn2+ and two organic ligands (BBZB and 2,6‐NDC) featuring the conjugate system. JXUST‐10 is a three‐dimensional two‐fold interpenetrated framework with good fluorescent property. Based on the luminescent characteristic, JXUST‐10 can be used as a multi‐responsive sensor for detection of three different analytes including tetracycline, benzaldehyde and uric acid via different luminescent change behaviours. Remarkably, fluorescence test paper and LED light devices are used to detect analytes through the visual change of luminescence colour of JXUST‐10 from blue greenish to yellow greenish under ultraviolet light (365 nm) irradiation. Furthermore, the probable sensing mechanisms for three target analytes were also discussed. A water stable and highly efficient luminescence MOF (JXUST‐10) can simply sense tetracycline, benzaldehyde and uric acid via different fluorescence behaviour. Remarkably, fluorescence test paper and LED light devices are applied to detect benzaldehyde and uric acid through the visual change of luminescence color of JXUST‐10.

Abstract:Two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Ni(3-bpmh)(HEA)·2H2O]n (1) and [Zn(3-bpmh)(HEA)·H2O]n (2) (3-bpmh=1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene, o-H2HEA=1,2-phenylenediacetic acid), respectively, were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structures revealed that 1 and 2 were two-dimensional structure and two-dimensional (4,4)-topological layer structure respectively. In addition, compound 2 had a selective sensing effect on ions. Therefore, it was possible to detect Cr2O7 2−, CrO4 2− and Fe3+ ions by fluorescence quenching.

Abstract:A novel thermal-stable and water-stable Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zn-2(bcpp)(2)(1,4-bib)(2)]center dot 1.5H(2)O (1) was synthesized by solvothermal method based on 3,5-bis(4-carboxylphenoxy)pyridine (H(2)bcpp) and 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene (1,4-bib). Complex 1 belongs to the monoclinic system with space group I2/a, which exhibits a 1D tubular structure. The adjacent 1D tubular structures are interpenetrated with each other to obtain a 3D supramolecular structure. Moreover, complex 1 exhibits excellent photoluminescence property, which can be applied as a "turn-off" fluorescence probe to detect Fe3+ ion and pesticide 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline in an aqueous solution with high selectivity and sensitivity.
