Abstract:In this letter, large-area, high-quality, evenly distributed, and vertically oriented Na-doped ZnO nanorod arrays (NRAs: Na) are prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The properties of the relevant ultraviolet sensors are studied, indicating that by providing an intrinsic ZnO coating via the hydrothermal method and annealing treatment, the performance of the sensors could be improved dramatically. Photoluminescence analyses show that Na doping suppressed the green emission of NRAs: Na, which is commonly ascribed to the singly VO located at the surface of the nanorods. For the optimized NRAs: Na sensors with a core-shell structure, the V-O-O-i annihilation mechanism is proposed to interpret the reduction of the persistent photocurrent. Abstract:Zn 1−x Cu x O nanorods with different Cu concentrations are prepared by a hydrothermal method. Bent and aggregated nanorods are obtained, which is attributed to centripetal surface tension of the evaporation and coagulation processes of the water film on the ZnO nanorods. The broad visible band consists of one violet, three blue, and one green emission. The violet emission is due to the transition of electrons from zinc interstitial (Zn i ) levels to the valance band. The three blue emissions may be attributed to the transition from extended Zn i levels, which are slightly below the simple Zn i level, to the valance band. The change of the green emission may be the result of competition between oxygen vacancies (V O ) and zinc vacancies (V Zn ).

Abstract:This paper reports a novel phenomenon that the ZnO nanorod arrays hydrothermally grown on the UV-treated area of the ZnO seeding layer exhibit different surface morphology and photoluminescence characteristics compared with those grown on the non-UV-treated area. The diameter distribution of the nanorods on the different areas is different too. The UV treatment makes the ZnO seeding layer hydrophilic, which is the exhibition of the change of the surface energy status. This change will affect the growth behavior of the ZnO nanorod arrays. Patterned ZnO nanorod arrays with different structures on the same substrate can be realized by hydrothermal method employing UV treatment of the ZnO seeding layer. This kind of UV treatment can find other applications in other preparation methods for 1D nanostructures of ZnO and other kinds of materials, and for the research of the hydrothermal growth mechanism of these nanostructures.

Abstract:In this work, one-dimensional (1D) and heavily doped Zn1−xCoxO (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2) nanorods (NRs) were successfully fabricated by a new solvothermal method. Such a Zn1−xCoxO nanorod exhibits a hexagonal prism-like microcrystal with a pyramidal top. Analyses from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicated that Zn1−xCoxO NRs possess perfect single crystal wurtzite structures. The influence of Co doping on the structural, optical and magnetic properties of NRs was investigated in detail. It was verified that Co was successfully doped into the ZnO wurtzite lattice structure by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The Zn1−xCoxO NRs show an obvious blue–green emission except for the weak UV emission. The corresponding luminescence mechanism was discussed, and the environment of cobalt in the ZnO wurtzite lattice was also identified through UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the magnetic hysteresis (M–H) curves demonstrated that the Zn1−xCoxO NRs possess obvious ferromagnetic characteristics at room temperature. These Zn1−xCoxO NRs are suggested to have potential applications in spintronic, field emission and optoelectronic devices, etc.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays were fabricated on ZnO:Al seeded Si substrates with various reaction temperatures using a low temperature hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of ZnO nanorod arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It reveals that the ZnO nanorods grow vertically on Si surface with (002) preferential orientation. The transmittance spectra show the ZnO nanorod arrays fabricated at low temperatures have high transmittance in the visible region and decrease with reaction temperature increasing. Moreover, the same trend was also observed in the reflectance spectra of the ZnO nanorod arrays. The optimal reaction temperature is of 120 degrees C for ZnO nanorod arrays with high transmittance (similar to 80%) and low reflectance (similar to 10%) in the visible region. The superior optical properties make ZnO nanorod arrays promising for applications as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:We demonstrate a promising route to fabricate large scale hexagonally patterned, vertically aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with small diameter. By adding 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) molecules as a connection between catalyst and substrate the large size dispersion resulting from the removal of catalyst pattern is avoided, thus the catalyst particle pattern with tiny size dispersion and regular shape is obtained; the size can be tuned in a large range from 50 nm to 300 nm. Using this technique, ZnO nanorod arrays with tunable spacings and diameters are achieved, which also have uniform shape and length, good crystal quality, and vertical alignment on the substrate. Moreover, a pronounced blue-shift of ultraviolet (UV) luminescence spectra of ZnO nanorods with their diameters decreasing is observed. Combining the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL), we suggest that a materially decreased exciton-phonon interaction with the reduced diameter of ZnO nanorods is the main reason for the blue-shift of UV luminescence.

Abstract:FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays are fabricated by a two-step solution immersion and a subsequent sulfurization. The material properties including structure, morphology, and photoluminescence are investigated by a variety of characterization methods. As compared with ZnO@ZnS core/shell structure, FeS2-sensitized ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays show improved optical absorption property with the extension of the absorption edge into the range of visible light. The photoresponse performance of FeS2-sensitized Zno@ZnS is also enhanced as the photocurrent density at 1.0 V is dozens of times larger than that of ZnO@ZnS nanorods. The cause for the difference in such material properties of these two materials is discussed. In this work, a new method for sensitizing wide bandgap ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays with improved light response performance is presented.
Preparation and Photoluminescence Properties of ZnO Nanowire/Nanorod Mix Arrays

Abstract:Well-aligned ZnO nanowire/nanorod mixed arrays were synthesized on ZnO/Si thin film substrates by a catalyst-free thermal evaporation method.The nanowires and nanorods with diameters of 10-20 nm and 60-160 nm,respectively,were mixed together in the arrays.The ratio between the numbers of nanowires and nanorods was decreasing in the downstream direction on the substrate.Room-temperature photoluminescence measurements showed that the ultraviolet emission intensity of the nanowire arrays was about 5 times higher than that of the nanorod arrays.Continuous illumination with incident laser serves to enhance the ultraviolet emission of the nanowire arrays,and the emission intensity decreased to the original value without the illumination,which could be interpreted by the desorption and adsorption of the oxygen species on the nanowire surface.

Abstract:A significant enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) emission has been observed in chemically grown ZnO samples using a thermal treatment at 200 degrees C. The intensity of UV emission can reach up to fifty times its initial value, while that of the visible emission decreases to a negligible value. Based on the thermal desorption spectroscopy results, the origin of this effect was attributed to the reduction of non-irradiative centres and hydrogen passivation through desorption of adsorbed water and hydroxyl groups. By precisely controlling the local desorption in ZnO with an electron beam, we have not only created optical nanotags on individual ZnO nanorods, but have also written sub-micrometre UV-emission patterns on ZnO films. It is believed that this patterning technique will extend the applications of ZnO to many other fields, such as high-density optical data storage and high-resolution UV-emission displays.

Abstract:Three-dimensional architectures composed of one-dimensional nanoscale building blocks are well-known to be able to integrate properties of materials with different dimensions and to derive more advanced performance. In this experiment, ZnO nanorod arrays are controlled to grow on NiO nanowires (NWs) to construct typical comblike nanocomposites by means of ZnO seeding on the surface of NiO NWs and subsequent seeds growth in hydrothermal conditions. The growth mechanism of this complex structure is proposed. Our results indicate that the photoresponse current of UV photosensors of these nanocomposites can be tuned by UV irradiance intensity. The sensor possesses improved UV photoresponse current (about 3.5 mA) under UV illumination (365 nm) of 400 mW cm–2, due to the advantages of composite structure and fine morphology, which reveals that this nanocomposite can be a promising candidate for UV photosensors.

Abstract:A simple chemical route for ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires with preferential (002) orientation is reported. Sodium sulfide and zinc nitrate were employed to supply S and Zn atoms at 60 degrees C to form ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires structures. Electron diffraction measurement shows that the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanostructure is single crystalline. Interesting features are found in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnS-coated ZnO nanostructures. After coating, the UV emission of nanorods is dramatically enhanced at the expense of the green emission. The core/shell structure with higher band gap shell material and reduced surface states should be responsible for this PL enhancement.

Abstract:Vertically aligned, highly ordered, large area arrays of nanostructures are important building blocks for multifunctional devices. Here, ZnO nanorod arrays are selectively synthesized on Si substrates by a solution method within patterns created by nanoimprint lithography. The growth modes of two dimensional nucleation-driven wedding cakes and screw dislocation-driven spirals are inferred to determine the top end morphologies of the nanorods. Sub-bandgap photoluminescence of the nanorods is greatly enhanced by the manipulation of the hydrogen donors via a post-growth thermal treatment. Lasing behavior is facilitated in the nanorods with faceted top ends formed from wedding cakes growth mode. This work demonstrates the control of morphologies of oxide nanostructures in a large scale and the optimization of the optical performance.

Abstract:Our study presents the synthesis and characterization of one-dimensional (1-D) zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod (NR) arrays via low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis, followed by surface modification with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are potential alternatives to indium-tin oxide, but their poor stability in atmospheric conditions poses a challenge. To address this, we developed ultrathin Ag/ZnO core-shell structured nanowire networks for ultraviolet-photodetectors (UV-PDs). This cost-effective solution process yielded high transmission (77 %) and low sheet resistance (8.3 Ω/sq). We comprehensively investigated surface morphology, crystalline nature, elemental composition, optical properties, and electrical performance of both synthesized nanorod arrays and NW networks. The UV photodetector exhibited a rise time of approximately 1.35 s and a decay time of 8.01 s, both faster than pristine AgNW electrodes. Additionally, the dark current decreased from 9 nA to 3.5 nA after incorporating Ag/ZnO, accompanied by a significant improvement in photocurrent. These results highlight a promising approach for high-performance UV photodetectors, leveraging the stability and conductivity of Ag/ZnO core-shell NW networks.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod arrays were fabricated in aqueous solutions under external voltages. The morphology and length of the nanorods could be readily controlled by varying such parameters as the voltage magnitude, growth time, solution concentration and substrate type. The external voltage, which made the adsorption of the Zn2+ cation-containing complexes more possible, modified the growth behavior of the ZnO crystals and played a key role in guaranteeing the orderliness of the arrays. The increase in the nanorod length with the prolonged growth time gradually saturated due to the balance between the growth and the erosion. The ZnO nanorods respectively grown on the Zn and Si substrates differed considerably in both morphology and defect concentration. Field emission was extracted from arrays of nanorods with tapered ends. This field-assisted solution route for fabricating ZnO nanorods featured simplicity in manipulation, inexpensiveness in instrumentation, and effectiveness in controlling the morphology and length.

Abstract:We synthesize a large area of ZnO nanorod array by using the RF magnetron sputtering and low-temperature hydrothermal method. The sample morphology, crystal structure and optical properties are characterized and analyzed by means of the SEM, XRD and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results show that ZnO nanorod array has the advantages of large aspect ratio, ordered orientation, uniform and compact at a lower OH−/Zn2+ concentration. The XRD results show that the samples are all hexagonal wurtzite structures and the photoluminescence (PL) pattern shows that an obvious ultraviolet peak of the samples appears around 375 nm, and an emission band of strong yellow green light appears in the wavelength between 450–650 nm. With the increase of the concentration ratio of OH−/Zn2+, the ultraviolet peak and the emission band of strong yellow green light both show a blue shift. The above results indicate that the ZnO nanorod array is a type of potentially preferred materials for ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low-cost and effective method to fabricate hexagonally patterned, vertically aligned ZnO nanorod arrays. Selective wet-etching is used to develop the catalyzing gold particle hexagonal pattern with the aid of a polystyrene microsphere self-assembled monolayer. The gold particles have tunable sizes independent of the polystyrene microsphere's diameter and are inherently round in shape. Each ZnO rod is grown individually from a catalyzing site via catalyst-initiated epitaxy, and the original hexagonal periodicity is well-preserved. The rods have flat ends, and the diameters of the rods can be controlled well by the amount of source materials. This method provides a promising way to create ZnO one-dimensional nanostructures for applications as two-dimensional photonic crystal, sensor arrays, nanolaser arrays, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:ZnO has attracted considerable attention as an ultraviolet (UV) light emitting material. Many efforts have been made to promote efficiency for UV emission. We report large enhancement in UV emission from ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays by covering with Ti coatings. Together with morphology and structure characterization, the capability of UV emission from the Ti-coating-covered ZnO (Ti/ZnO) NR arrays was evaluated by systematically examining the photoluminescence at room and low temperatures. At room temperature, the bare ZnO NR arrays are capable of emitting a photoluminescence composed of a strong UV near-band-edge (NBE) emission of ZnO and a weak visible emission associated with deep-level defects in ZnO. The UV NBE emission is enhanced by about 24 times after covering the ZnO NR arrays with Ti coatings. The UV NBE emission increases drastically as the temperature drops, with the increase of the UV NBE emission of the Ti-covered ZnO NR arrays being much faster than that of the bare ZnO NR arrays. The UV NBE emission of the Ti/ZnO NR array is increased by about 175 times when the temperature drops from room temperature to 10 K. Compared to the UV NBE emission of the bare ZnO NR arrays, a 70-fold enhancement in the UV NBE emission of the Ti-covered ZnO NR arrays is obtained at 10 K.

Abstract:A compact Cu-doped ZnO nanorod (NR) array film was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and post-annealing process. The obtained ZnO NR array film-based UV photodetectors exhibit not only enhanced UV sensitivity but also faster reset time compared to undoped ZnO NR samples, which are attributed to the trapping and de-trapping of electrons by Cu-related defects.

Abstract:Well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays had been synthesized on the COOH-terminated short-chain silane surfaces for the first time by a polymer/substrate cooperative interaction method. The growth of the products on the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) was well controlled by the electrostatic interaction and the polymer assistant hydrogen bonding interaction. By adjusting the polymer molecule assistant effect, ZnO arrays with satisfying optical quality and photoresponse property were obtained. These products showed a promising application in the ultraviolet emitting and the photoelectronic devices. This bio-inspired SAMs/polymer cooperative strategy on the short-chain silane shows prominent advantages such as its low-cost, easy preparation, good adherence and suitability for preparing series of one-dimensional (1-D) semiconductor nanostructure arrays, etc.
