Abstract:Metallic and plasmonic nanolasers have attracted growing interest recently. Plasmonic lasers demonstrated so far operate in hybrid photon-plasmon modes in transverse dimensions, rendering it impossible to separate photonic from plasmonic components. Thus only the far-field photonic component can be measured and utilized directly. But spatially separated plasmon modes are highly desired for applications including high-efficiency coupling of single-photon emitters and ultrasensitivity optical sensing. Here, we report a nanowire (NW) laser that offers subdiffraction-limited beam size and spatially separated plasmon cavity modes. By near-field coupling a high-gain CdSe NW and a 100 nm diameter Ag NW, we demonstrate a hybrid photon-plasmon laser operating at 723 nm wavelength at room temperature, with a plasmon mode area of 0.008λ(2). This device simultaneously provides spatially separated photonic far-field output and highly localized coherent plasmon modes, which may open up new avenues in the fields of integrated nanophotonic circuits, biosensing, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Perhaps the most successful application of plasmonics to date has been in sensing, where the interaction of a nanoscale localized field with analytes leads to high-sensitivity detection in real time and in a label-free fashion. However, all previous designs have been based on passively excited surface plasmons, in which sensitivity is intrinsically limited by the low quality factors induced by metal losses. It has recently been proposed theoretically that surface plasmon sensors with active excitation (gain-enhanced) can achieve much higher sensitivities due to the amplification of the surface plasmons. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an active plasmon sensor that is free of metal losses and operating deep below the diffraction limit for visible light. Loss compensation leads to an intense and sharp lasing emission that is ultrasensitive to adsorbed molecules. We validated the efficacy of our sensor to detect explosives in air under normal conditions and have achieved a sub-part-per-billion detection limit, the lowest reported to date for plasmonic sensors with 2,4-dinitrotoluene and ammonium nitrate. The selectivity between 2,4-dinitrotoluene, ammoniumnitrate and nitrobenzene is on a par with other state-of-the-art explosives detectors. Our results show that monitoring the change of the lasing intensity is a superior method than monitoring the wavelength shift, as is widely used in passive surface plasmon sensors. We therefore envisage that nanoscopic sensors that make use of plasmonic lasing could become an important tool in security screening and biomolecular diagnostics.

Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.
Nanoplasmonic Biosensor Using Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectroscopy for Biochemical Detection.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) associated with metal nanostructures has developed into a highly useful sensor technique. Optical LSPR spectroscopy of nanostructures often shows sharp absorption and scattering peaks, which can be used to probe several bio-molecular interactions. Here, we report nanoplasmonic biosensors using LSPR on nanocup arrays (nanoCA) to recognize bio-molecular binding for biochemical detection. These sensors can be modified to quantify binding of small molecules to proteins for odorant and explosive detections. Electrochemical LSPR biosensors can also be designed by coupling electrochemistry and LSPR spectroscopy measurements. Multiple sensing information can be obtained and electrochemical LSPR property can be investigated for biosensors. In some applications, the electrochemical LSPR biosensor can be used to quantify immunoreactions and enzymatic activity. The biosensors exhibit better performance than those of conventional optical LSPR measurements. With multi-transducers, the nanoplasmonic biosensor can provide a promising approach for bio-detection in environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and food quality control.

Abstract:A novel structure is proposed to electrically detect the plasmonic waves from a subwavelength plasmonic waveguide. By locating two L-shaped metallic nanorods in close proximity of each other at the end of the plasmonic waveguide, a metal-semiconductor-metal plasmonic detector is constructed. The L-shaped nanorods also form a dipole nanoantenna and a nanocavity to focus the photonic power into the active volume of the detector. The dimensions and locations of the L-shaped nanorods are studied to maximize the transmission efficiency of the photonic power from the plasmonic waveguide to the detector. Impedance matching with a sub is investigated to further improve the power transmission. Possible leads of the detector are discussed and their effects are investigated. Proposed detector has an ultra-compact and easy-to-fabricate planar structure, and a potentially THz speed, high responsivity as well as low power dissipation.

Abstract:A single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with ultratight optical confinement in all three dimensions is a long-cherished but yet to be realized goal. Here we propose an experimentally realizable plasmon laser using a single nanorod. We show that, by harnessing a Au-nanorod cavity with a large gain from a Purcell-enhanced stimulated emission rate and greatly suppressed high-order mode dissipation, it is possible to implement a dipole-mode plasmon laser with accessible material parameters. Our approach may lead to a real single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with three-dimensional ultraconfinement and offers an opportunity to explore and utilize the enhanced light-matter interaction at a lower dimension.

Abstract:We experimentally study photoemissionfrom gold nanodiskarraysusing space-, time-, and energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy.When excited by a plasmonic resonant infrared (IR) laser pulse, plasmonichotspots are generated owing to local surface plasmon resonance. Photoelectronsemitted from each plasmonic hotspot form a nanoscale and ultrashortelectron pulse. When the system is excited by an extreme ultraviolet(EUV) laser pulse, a uniformly distributed photoelectron cloud isformed across the sample surface. When excited by the IR and EUV laserpulses together, both the photoemission image and kinetic energy varysignificantly for the IR laser-generated electrons depending on thetime delay between the two laser pulses. These observations are wellexplained by the Coulomb interaction with the EUV laser-generatedelectron cloud. Our study offers a feasible approach to manipulatethe energy of electron pulse emitted from a plasmonic nanostructureon an ultrafast time scale.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically-pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. Low perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure-of-merit refractive-index sensing of analytes interacting with the open cavity.

Abstract:Plasmonic lasers provide a paradigm-changing approach for the generation of coherent light at the nanoscale. In addition to the usual properties of coherent radiation, the emission of plasmonic lasers can feature high sensitivity to the surrounding environment, which makes this technology attractive for developing high-performance and highly-integrated sensing devices. Here, we investigate a plasmonic laser architecture based on a high-$Q$ plasmonic crystal consisting of a periodic arrangement of nanoholes on a thin gold film cladded with an organic-dye-doped glass layer as the gain material. We report an extensive full-wave numerical analysis of the device's lasing performance and its application as a biochemical sensor, showing that the proposed design features excellent figures of merit for surface sensing that in principle can be over an order of magnitude larger than those of previously reported high-performance plasmonic biosensor architectures.

Abstract:This paper presents a number of plasmonics based nanosensors that is currently being investigated in IHPC. In the first case, the influence of external magnetic field and electron on the field distribution of active semiconductor microcavity with elliptical shape is studied. It is observed that high amount of electron pumped into the elliptical microcavity demonstrate the plasmonics field distribution, which can be used to sense the change in wavelength and electron/holes densities. The second case will discuss about using plasmonics to enhance the electromagnetic wave from metallic waveguide slot. The enhancement is more than 100 times and this is important for the generation of electron-holes pair in PIN based photo-detector. The third case will discuss using the metallic nanowire to sense different surrounding materials. The small differences in the refractive index of the surrounding materials show the different plasmonics resonance frequencies.

Abstract:A novel strategy for highly sensitive detection and discrimination of explosives is developed based on the metal–organic polyhedra (MOP)‐decorated plasmonic substrate. It is found that the careful selection of the geometric and electronic characteristics of the assembly units (organic ligands and unsaturated metals sites) embedded within the MOP cage allows for the integration of multiple weak molecular interactions in a controllable fashion and thus the MOP cage can serve as an excellent receptor for selective uptake and binding of explosives. By further grafting of the MOP cage onto a plasmonic substrate with good surface‐enhanced Raman scattering enhancement factor, the resulting sensor shows a good sensing capability to various groups of ultratrace explosives, especially the challenging aliphatic nitro‐organics.

Abstract:The resonance phenomena of surface plasmons have led to a novel class of non-contact, real-time and label-free optical sensors which have become a central tool in biochemical sensing and detection. However, all kinds of surface plasmon resonances are with natively strong non-radiative Drude damping that weakens the resonance and limits the sensing performance fundamentally. We demonstrated that these dampings can be fully compensated by gain medium at a plasmon lasing state which can lead to a new class of plasmon laser sensors.

We achieve narrow-linewidth visible-frequency lasing at room temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. We show how the lasing threshold and linewidth can be lowered by incorporating a low-profile tapered grating on the cavity floor to couple the excitation beam into a pump surface plasmon polariton providing a strong modal overlap with the gain medium. Low-perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure of merit refractive index sensing of analytes interacting with the open metallic trench.
Two-dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide (mos2) with Gold Nanoparticles for Biosensing of Explosives by Optical Spectroscopy

Abstract:As one of the most important transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has gained extensive attention for its marvelous optoelectronic properties. In this study, nanocomposites of two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles were synthesized by a one-step green process. Under irradiation, 2D MoS2 in the nanocomposites absorbed photons and generated carriers in a wide spectrum. Then MoS2 coupled to gold nanoparticles and produced the enhanced electromagnetic field in the nanosturctures, leading to outstanding optical properties. In virtue of bio-compatibilities of the particles, the nanocomposites were chemically modified with specific peptides to construct an optical biosensor for explosive detection. When exposed to 2,4,6 -trinitrotoluene (TNT), the biosensor showed significant absorption peak changes in visible spectra with a concentration-dependent behavior. The biosensor could detect TNT at the concentration as low as 2 x 10(-7) M. For selectivity, the biosensor could differentiate TNT from other nitroaromatic explosives that have extremely similar structures to TNT, such as 4-nitrotoluene (4-NT) and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT). All the results suggested that the biosensor based on the nanocomposites of 2D MoS2 coupling to plasmonic nanoparticles exhibited remarkable optical performance, which provided a promising approach to design versatile biosensors to detect biochemical molecules. Abstract:Abstract Plasmonic nanolasers are a new class of coherent emitters where surface plasmons are amplified by stimulated emission in a plasmonic nanocavity. In contrast to lasers, the physical size and mode volume of plasmonic nanolasers can shrink beyond the optical diffraction limit, and can be operated with faster speed and lower power consumption. It was initially proposed by Bergman and Stockman in 2003, and first experimentally demonstrated in 2009. Here we summarize our studies on the fundamental properties and applications of plasmonic nanolasers in recent years, including dark emission characterization, scaling laws, quantum efficiency, quantum threshold, gain and loss optimization, low loss plasmonic materials, sensing, and eigenmode engineering.

The laser-triggered dynamical plasmonic optical trapping of targets and advanced Raman detection sensitivity

This dynamically optimized Raman enhanced protocol exhibits superior detection sensitivity for Serratia marcescens and tetrabromobisphenol A, with LOD values of 5 × 105 CFU mL-1 and 6 × 10-7 M, respectively.

Abstract:The work introduces a new way to improve the lasing performance of piezoelectric semiconductor materials and will expand the application of piezoelectric effects in flexible lasers and on‐chip strain sensing. Nonlinear optics play an important role in laser technology, optical communication, integrated optics, and other fields. However, conventional two‐photon lasing faces challenges such as high thresholds and large size, which hinder the miniaturization of lasers. In this study, the structure of single‐crystal Au/Al2O3/CsPbBr3 (ScAu/Al2O3/CPB) is constructed to achieve two‐photon pumped frequency upconversion single‐mode plasmonic lasing. The strong spatial confinement and near‐field enhancement of surface plasmons in metals enable the plasmonic lasing mode output in a hybrid nanocavity, significantly reducing the lasing threshold. Additionally, by applying external mechanical strain, the resonant wavelength of the lasing mode is dynamically regulated, further reducing the threshold to 0.48 mJ cm−2 based on piezo‐electronic effect. These results provide an effective strategy for all‐optical integration and the development of smaller, faster, and more efficient nanophotonics devices.

Abstract:Metallic nanostructures provide a toolkit for the generation of coherent light below the diffraction limit. Plasmonic based lasing relies on the population inversion of emitters (such as organic fluorophores) along with feedback provided by plasmonic resonances. In this regime, known as weak light matter coupling, the radiative characteristics of the system can be described by the Purcell effect. Strong light matter coupling between the molecular excitons and electromagnetic field generated by the plasmonic structures leads to the formation of hybrid quasi-particles known as plasmon exciton polaritons (PEPs). Due to the bosonic character of these quasi particles, exciton polariton condensation can lead to laser-like emission at much lower threshold powers than in conventional photon lasers. Here, we observe PEP lasing through a dark plasmonic mode in an array of metallic nanoparticles with a low threshold in an optically pumped organic system. Interestingly, the threshold power of the lasing is reduced by increasing the degree of light matter coupling in spite of the degradation of the quantum efficiency of the active material, highlighting the ultrafast dynamic responsible for the lasing, i.e., stimulated scattering. These results demonstrate a unique roomtemperature platform for exploring the physics of exciton polaritons in an open cavity architecture and pave the road toward the integration of this on-chip lasing device with the current photonics and active metamaterial planar technologies.

Abstract:Multiwavelength plasmonic nanolasers are central to the quest for ultradense and versatile photonic integrations. However, the insufficient optical feedback and mode selection strategies result in a high lasing threshold and multi-mode operation with limited spectral purity and stability. Here, a multiwavelength near-infrared plasmonic nanolaser with high mode purity by leveraging a nontrivial "H"-shape plasmonic cavity is demonstrated. The nanolaser is constructed by inserting InGaAs/GaAs multi-quantum-disk (MQD) nanowires into a metallic Fabry-Perot cavity consisting of a pair of Ag nanowires positioned on an ultrasmooth Au film. The design is endowed with strong optical feedback to enhance the energy transfer between the exciton and plasmon, rendering a significant reduction of the lasing threshold. More importantly, the "H"-shape cavity is featured with a large flexibility in tuning the resonance wavelength, where multiwavelength lasing with the virtues of single-mode is realized at room temperature. The results make a crucial step toward near-infrared multiwavelength plasmonic nanolasers and open up exciting opportunities for applications such as ultracompact photonic integrated circuits and high-throughput biochemical sensing.
