Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.

Abstract:Eight neutral iridium(III) complexes (Ir1–Ir8) containing an electron-withdrawing pentafluorosulfanyl (−SF5) group on cyclometalated ligands with different ancillary ligands were synthesized and investigated. 2-(3/4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (for Ir1 and Ir2), 1-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (for Ir3 and Ir4), and 2-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyridine (for Ir5–Ir8) were chosen as cyclometalated ligands and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (for Ir1–Ir4), tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (for Ir5 and Ir6), and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (for Ir7 and Ir8) were used as ancillary ligands. The crystal structures of Ir1, Ir3, Ir4, Ir6, and Ir8 also confirmed the identities of these complexes. Complexes Ir1, Ir2, and Ir5–Ir8 exhibit sky blue to green emissions (480–533 nm) with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields up to 94.7% in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Complexes Ir3 and Ir4 are red phosphors (λmax = 607 nm, Φ = 76.8% for Ir3 and λmax = 627 nm, Φ = 49.2% for Ir4, respectively). Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a further study of the orbital distributions and electronic states of eight Ir(III) complexes. Additionally, ion detection studies reveal that Ir2 has the potential for detecting Hg2+ ion.

Abstract:A class of efficient electrophosphorescent materials of cyclometalated iridium complexes was reported. Their UV, PL and EL properties were studied. For these iridium complexes doped polymer light-emitting devices using CN-PPP as host matrix, intense red electrophosphorescence with an external quantum efficiency of 1.3% was achieved. Abstract:High-efficiency blue organic light-emitting diodes were reported by adopting two novel iridium phosphors. Due to phosphoryl moiety in ancillary ligands, both complexes (dfppy)(2)Ir(ppp) and (dfppy)2Ir(dpp) (dyppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, ppp = phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphinate, dpp = dipyridinylphosphinate) own high electron mobility which can balance the injection and transport of carriers. Furthermore, the double light-emitting layers with TcTa (4,4',4"-tris(carbazol-9-yl)triphenylamine) and 26DCzPPy (2,6-bis(3-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine) hosts broaden the exciton formation zone and suppress efficiency roll-off. The optimized double light-emitting layers devices exhibited decent performances with peak current efficiency near 50 cd/A and external quantum efficiency above 20% as well as negligible efficiency roll-off. Abstract:A novel series of heteroleptic iridium complexes with 2-phenyl-pyridine as a main ligand and carborane-functionalized 2,2'-bipyridine as an ancillary ligand were synthesized, and characterized as [Ir(ppy)2(By)]PF6 (where ppy is 2-phenyl-pyridine, By is 5-(2-R-Cb)-2,2'-bipyridine, R = H (2a), CH3 (2b), Ph (2c), iPr (2d) and iBu (2e), or By is 4-(2-R-Cb)-2,2'-bipyridine while R = H (3a), CH3 (3b), Ph (3c), iPr (3d) and iBu (3e), Cb = o-carboran-1-yl). The R groups and the substitution sites of carborane on the pyridine ring have caused differences in the emission properties of these complexes. In addition, the quantum efficiency of [Ir(ppy)2(By)]PF6 complexes has been tuned as well through the introduction of various 2-R-substituted o-carboranes into the ancillary ligand 2,2'-bipyridine, no matter in the solid state (from 0.12 to 0.25) or in solution (from 0.04 to 0.25). The emission color was tuned from yellow to red by the o-carboranyl unit because of its inductive effect. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations have been applied to investigate excited-state electronic structures of the newly synthesized complexes, which are consistent with the observed red-shift emissions.

Abstract:Conjugated fluorene-alt-pyridine and fluorene-alt-thiophene polymers containing phosphorescent iridium complexes have been synthesized. Exchanging the 2,5-linked pyridine group with the 3,4-linked thiophene group resulted in a blue shift in the absorption and emission spectra of the conjugated polymers. Upon incorporation of the thienyl unit, phosphorescent quantum yields of films increased from 0.05 to 0.20 and electrophosphorescent external quantum efficiencies increased from 0.32 to 0.84%. These results are attributed to raising the triplet energy of the main chain polymer, with respect to the Ir phosphor, thereby reducing quenching of the phosphor by the main chain.

Abstract:Trifluoromethylation of tetraphenlyborate counterions was successfully used to improve the electrochemical stabilities and device performance of cationic iridium(III) complexes. Melioration of the thermal, photoluminescent, electrochemical, and electrophosphorescent characteristics was achieved. Interionic hydrogen bonds were first found between the aromatic hydrogen atoms in the ancillary ligands of cations and the fluorine atoms in the trifluoromethyl groups of the anions. The strong impact of the counterions on the charge transport in the devices was investigated. A compound with two trifluoromethyl groups in the tetraphenlyborate ion shows the highest photoluminescent efficiency, the best electrochemical stability, and the greatest performance in green-blue-emitting devices, with a high current efficiency of 12.4 cd A(-1) and an emission peak at λ=480 nm. The efficiencies achieved are the highest reported for OLEDs with ionic complexes emitting in the blue-green region.
Tuning the Optical Properties of 2-Thienylpyridyl Iridium Complexes Through Carboranes and Anions

Abstract:2-Thienylpyridyl iridium(III) complexes containing an o-, m-, or p-carboranylvinyl-2,2-bipyridine ligand and various counteranions (denoted o-PF6, m-BF4, m-PF6, m-SbF6, m-ClO4, m-OTf, m-NO3, m-BPh4, m-F, m-Cl, and p-PF6) were synthesized by using C-formyl carboranes as starting materials. The solid-state structures of o-PF6, m-PF6, m-ClO4, and m-BF4 showed that the cations form twisted cavities in which the anions are fixed by multiple hydrogen bonds. Anion-hydrogen interactions were investigated for nine m-carborane-based complexes with different counteranions. All carborane-based iridium(III) complexes show similar phosphorescence yields in solution but significantly different emission in the solid state. Anion-exchange titration and theoretical calculations revealed the relationships between structures and optical properties. The size of the anion and CHX anion-hydrogen bonds strongly influence the phosphorescence quantum yield in the solid state. In particular, the CcarHX hydrogen bonds between the carboranyl unit and the anion play an important role in solid-state phosphorescence. Complex p-PF6 was successfully applied in phosphorescence-lifetime bioimaging owing to its low toxicity and near-infrared emission.

Abstract:The development of pure-blue-to-deep-blue-emitting ionic phosphors is an ultimate challenge for full-color displays and white-light sources. Herein we report two series of short-wavelength light-emitting cationic iridium(III) complexes with nonconjugated ancillary and cyclometalating ligands, respectively. In the first series, nonconjugated 1-[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C2' (dppmmi) is used as the ancillary ligand and 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy), and 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (dfppz) are used as cyclometalating ligands. In the second one, nonconjugated 2,4-difluorobenzyl-N-pyrazole (dfbpz) is used as the cyclometalating ligand and 3-methyl-1-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C(2)' (pymbi) as the ancillary ligand. The synthesis and photophysical and electrochemical properties, together with the X-ray crystal structures of these complexes, have been investigated. At room temperature, blue-emitting complexes [Ir(ppy)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (1) and [Ir(dfppy)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (2; PF6(-) is hexafluorophosphate) show much larger photoluminescence quantum yields of 24% and 46%, respectively. On the contrary, for complexes [Ir(dfppz)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (3) and [Ir(dfbpz)2(pymbi)]PF6 (4), deep-blue luminescence is only observed at low temperature (77 K). Density functional theory calculations are used to rationalize the differences in the photophysical behavior observed upon changes of the ligands. It is shown that the electronic transition dipoles of cationic iridium complexes 1 and 2 are mainly confined to cyclometalated ligands ((3)MLCT and LC (3)π-π*) and those of complex 3 are confined to all of the ligands ((3)MLCT, LC (3)π-π*, and (3)LLCT) because of the high LUMO energy level of dfppz. The emission of 4 mainly originates from the central iridium(III) ion and cyclometalated ligand to ancillary ligand charge transfer ((3)MLCT and (3)LLCT), in contrast to commonly designed cationic complexes using carbene-type ancillary ligands, where emission originates from the cyclometalated main ligands. Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes based on complexes 1 and 2 gave blue-green (498 nm) and blue (478 nm) electroluminescence with maximum current efficiencies of 3.8 and 3.4 cd A(-1), respectively. The results indicate that introducing nonconjugated ligands into cationic iridium complexes is an effective means of achieving short-wavelength light-emitting phosphors.
Versatile Phosphorescent Color Tuning of Highly Efficient Borylated Iridium(iii) Cyclometalates by Manipulating the Electron-Accepting Capacity of the Dimesitylboron Group

Abstract:Several phosphorescent Ir-III ppy-type complexes (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine anion) bearing dimesitylboron (B(Mes)(2)) units have been designed and some of them have been newly prepared. By changing the substitution positions with different electronic characters that can manipulate the electron-accepting ability of the attached B(Mes)(2) moieties, the direction of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) process for these Ir-III complexes can be either retained or shifted, which can provide a new strategy toward phosphorescent color tuning. Through computational studies, shifting the substitution position of the B(Mes)(2) moiety on the organic ligand, some electronic features, such as the electron injection/electron transporting (EI/ET) properties and charge transport balance, can also be conferred to the phosphorescent Ir-III complexes to give excellent electroluminescent (EL) characteristics. Highly efficient red phosphorescent bis(5-(dimesitylboryl)-2-phenylpyridinato) iridium(acetylacetonate) (Ir-B-1) based on the above notion shows a very good compatibility with the choice of host materials which can furnish maximum current efficiency (eta(L)) of 22.2 cd A(-1), external quantum efficiency (eta(ext)) of 14.7% and power efficiency (eta(P)) of 21.4 lm W-1 for the devices constructed with the conventional host materials. So, these exciting results will not only provide both the systematic guidelines for the phosphorescent color variation on the Ir-III complexes with B(Mes)(2) units as well as a deeper insight into the conventional color-tuning approach on ppy-type Ir-III complexes, but also offer a simple outlet to afford unique electronic features to these phosphorescent emitters to show admirable EL performance.
Sublimable Cationic Iridium(III) Complexes with 1,10-Phenanthroline Derivatives As Ancillary Ligands for Highly Efficient and Polychromic Electroluminescence.

Abstract:A novel series of four sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes have been prepared with 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives as ancillary ligands and the same negative counter-ion, tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, which has a large steric hindrance and widely dispersed charges, thereby increasing the ionic radii, reducing the electrostatic interaction, and thus improving the volatility. Their structural, photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties have been fully characterized. Upon excitation, these compounds show polychromic emission varying from green to orange in solution, which are blue-shifted in the solid state to different extents due to π-π conjugate effects in the ancillary ligands and the resulting molecular aggregation. OLEDs fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition demonstrated desirable device performance with high efficiency and brightness, exhibiting various electroluminescent colors dependent upon doping concentration.

Abstract:A series of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes, Ir-B-1, Ir-B-2, Ir-B-3, and Ir-B-4, were synthesized with the 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) type main ligand possessing a dimesitylboron group and the auxiliary ligand containing other main-group element units showing unique charge injection/transporting features. Their thermal stability, photophysical and electrochemical properties, and electroluminescent (EL) performances have been characterized. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were carried out to study the photophysical properties of these complexes. All these complexes can emit intense orange phosphorescence with extremely high quantum yields of nearly 100% measured in neat films at room temperature. Moreover, the solution-processed organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) using these complexes as orange emitters can show very high EL efficiencies with the maximum luminance efficiency (ηL) of 85.1 cd A−1, corresponding to a power efficiency (ηP) of 69.7 lm W−1 and an external quantum efficiency (ηext) of 28.1%.

Abstract:Iridium complexes bearing chelating cyclometalates are popular choices as dopant emitters in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this contribution, we report a series of blue-emitting, bis-tridentate Ir-III complexes bearing chelates with two fused five-six-membered metallacycles, which are in sharp contrast to the traditional designs of tridentate chelates that form the alternative, fused five-five metallacycles. Five Ir-III complexes, Px-21-23, Cz-4, and Cz-5, have been synthesized that contain a coordinated dicarbene pincer chelate incorporating a methylene spacer and a dianionic chromophoric chelate possessing either a phenoxy or carbazolyl appendage to tune the coordination arrangement. All these tridentate chelates afford peripheral ligand-metal-ligand bite angles of 166-170 degrees, which are larger than the typical bite angle of 153-155 degrees observed for their five-five-coordinated tridentate counterparts, thereby leading to reduced geometrical distortion in the octahedral frameworks. Photophysical measurements and TD-DFT studies verified the inherent transition characteristics that give rise to high emission efficiency, and photodegradation experiments confirmed the improved stability in comparison with the benchmark fac-[Ir(ppy)(3)] in degassed toluene at room temperature. Phosphorescent OLED devices were also fabricated, among which the carbazolyl-functionalized emitter Cz-5 exhibited the best performance among all the studied bis-tridentate phosphors, showing a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 18.7 % and CIEx,y coordinates of (0.145, 0.218), with a slightly reduced EQE of 13.7 % at 100 cd m(-2) due to efficiency roll-off.

Control of Intramolecular Π–π Stacking Interaction in Cationic Iridium Complexes Via Fluorination of Pendant Phenyl Rings

Abstract:Intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction in one kind of phosphorescent cationic iridium complexes has been controlled through fluorination of the pendant phenyl rings on the ancillary ligands. Two blue-green-emitting cationic iridium complexes, [Ir(ppy)(2)(F2phpzpy)]PF6 (2) and [Ir(ppy)(2)(F5phpzpy)]PF6 (3), with the pendant phenyl rings on the ancillary ligands substituted with two and five fluorine atoms, respectively, have been synthesized and compared to the parent complex, [Ir(ppy)(2)(phpzpy)]PF6 (1). Here Hppy is 2-phenylpyridine, F2phpzpy is 2-(1-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, F5phpzpy is 2-(1-pentafluorophenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyridine, and phpzpy is 2-(1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine. Single crystal structures reveal that the pendant phenyl rings on the ancillary ligands stack to the phenyl rings of the ppy ligands, with dihedral angles of 21 degrees, 18 degrees, and 5.0 degrees between least-squares planes for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively, and centroid-centroid distances of 3.75, 3.65, and 3.52 angstrom for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively, indicating progressively reinforced intramolecular pi-pi stacking interactions from complexes 1 to 2 and 3. Compared to complex 1, complex 3 with a significantly reinforced intramolecular face-to-face pi-pi stacking interaction exhibits a significantly enhanced (by 1 order of magnitude) photoluminescent efficiency in solution. Theoretical calculations reveal that in complex 3 it is unfavorable in energy for the pentafluorophenyl ring to swing by a large degree and the intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction remains on the lowest triplet state.
