Abstract:To obtain dopants owing excellent electron mobility, four novel iridium (III) complexes (Ir(tfmppm)(2)(acac), Ir (tfmppm)(2)(tpip), Ir(f-4-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) and Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tPiP)) with green emission using 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm), 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-4-tfmppm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)-5-fluoropyrimidine (f-3-tfmppm) as main ligands, acetylacetonate (acac) and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (tpip) as ancillary ligands, were investigated, respectively. Due to the variation of the structures among the complexes, the photoluminescence quantum yield (up to 94%) and electron mobility can be regulated gradually, which would broaden the recombination zone, balance the distribution of holes and electrons, leading to excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances. Among four emitters, the organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using Ir(f-3-tfmppm)(2)(tpip) display the best EL performances with a maximum current efficiency of 92.83 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 29.5%, suggesting these materials have potential application in OLEDs.

Abstract:Two novel iridium(III) complexes Ir(BTBP)2mepzpy and Ir(BTBP)(2)phpzpy were successfully synthesized, in which 2',6'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,4'-bipyridine (BTBP) was used as the main ligand, and 2-(3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)pyridine (mepzpy) and 2-(3-2-(3-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl))pyridine (phpzpy) were introduced as the ancillary ligands, respectively. Both Ir(III) complexes displayed bluish green emission peaks at 486 and 487 nm with high quantum efficiencies of 0.73 and 0.69, respectively. The organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the structure of ITO/HATCN (hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile, 5 nm)/TAPC (bis[4-(N,N-ditolylamino)-phenyl]cyclohexane, 40 nm)/Ir(BTBP)(2)mepzpy or Ir(BTBP)(2)phpzpy (10 wt%): 2,6-DCzPPy (2,6-bis(3-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene, 30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) exhibited high efficiencies with low efficiency roll-off. Especially, the device based on the Ir(BTBP)(2)mepzpy complex achieved a maximum current efficiency of 58.17 cd A(-1) and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 25.33% with Commission Internationale de 1'Eclairage coordinates of (0.19, 0.43). These results indicate that novel cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes for high efficiency OLEDs with low efficiency roll-off were obtained by our rational design.

Abstract:Three novel highly efficient blue bicyclometalated iridium(III) complexes (Ir1-Ir3) were designed and synthesized with 4-(2, 6-difluoropyridin-3-yl)-6-mesitylpyrimidine as primary ligands. The alternation of ancillary ligands had precisely regulated their emitting peaks from sky-blue to deep-blue. These complexes exhibit unimodal emission with PLQYs higher than 90% and lifetimes shorter than 1.1 mu s. These complexes also show good thermal stability with T-d > 320 degrees C. The OLED using complex Ir3 as emitter in 13 wt% exhibited a maximum luminous efficiency of 16.9 cd A(-1) with a high EQE of 13.0%. The CIE coordinates of this device are (0.15, 0.16), which are close to the standard blue color region.

Abstract:Due to the high quantum efficiency and wide scope of emission colors, iridium (Ir) (III) complexes have been widely applied as guest materials for OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). Contrary to well-developed Ir(III)-based red and green phosphorescent complexes, the efficient blue emitters are rare reported. Like the development of the LED, the absence of efficient and stable blue materials hinders the widely practical application of the OLEDs. Inspired by this, we designed two novel ancillary ligands of phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphinate (ppp) and dipyridinylphosphinate (dpp) for efficient blue phosphorescent iridium complexes (dfppy) 2 Ir(ppp) and (dfppy) 2 Ir(dpp) (dfppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine) with good electron transport property. The devices using the new iridium phosphors display excellent electroluminescence (EL) performances with a peak current efficiency of 58.78 cd/A, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 28.3%, a peak power efficiency of 52.74 lm/W and negligible efficiency roll-off ratios. The results demonstrated that iridium complexes with pyridinylphosphinate ligands are potential blue phosphorescent materials for OLEDs.

Abstract:A novel series of four sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes have been prepared with 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives as ancillary ligands and the same negative counter-ion, tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, which has a large steric hindrance and widely dispersed charges, thereby increasing the ionic radii, reducing the electrostatic interaction, and thus improving the volatility. Their structural, photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties have been fully characterized. Upon excitation, these compounds show polychromic emission varying from green to orange in solution, which are blue-shifted in the solid state to different extents due to π-π conjugate effects in the ancillary ligands and the resulting molecular aggregation. OLEDs fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition demonstrated desirable device performance with high efficiency and brightness, exhibiting various electroluminescent colors dependent upon doping concentration.
Blue-green Emitting Cationic Iridium Complexes with 1,3,4-Oxadiazole Cyclometallating Ligands: Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties, Theoretical Investigation and Electroluminescent Devices

Abstract:Two cationic iridium complexes, namely [Ir(dph-oxd)2(bpy)]PF6 (1) and [Ir(dph-oxd)2(pzpy)]PF6 (2), using 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (dph-oxd) as the cyclometallating ligand and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (pzpy) as the ancillary ligands, have been synthesized, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties have been comprehensively investigated. In solution, both complexes emit efficient blue-green light. For complex 1, the light emission in a neat film is remarkably red-shifted; in solid state, it gives an intriguing piezochromic phenomenon. Compared with archetype [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]PF6 (ppy is 2-phenylpyridine), complex 1 shows a largely stabilized HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) level, induced by the electron-deficient 1,3,4-oxadiazole (oxd) heterocycle of dph-oxd, which results in an enlarged energy gap and blue-shifted emission. Compared with complex 1, complex 2 shows an enhanced LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) level, caused by the electron-rich pzpy ancillary ligand, but they exhibit similar emission energy in solution. For both complexes, theoretical calculations reveal that their blue-green emission in solution arises primarily from the (3)π-π* states centered on dph-oxd; moreover, complex 1 bears close-lying (3)π-π* and (3)CT (charge-transfer) states, underlying its remarkably red-shifted emission in the neat film and unique piezochromic behavior in the solid state. Solid state light emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on complexes 1 and 2 give efficient yellow and green-blue light, with peak current efficiencies of 18.3 and 5.2 cd A(-1), respectively. It is demonstrated that oxd-type cyclometallating ligands are promising as an avenue to stabilize the HOMOs and tune emission properties of cationic iridium complexes to a large extent.

Abstract:Two blue-emitting cationic iridium complexes with 2-(IH-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (pzpy) as the ancillary ligands, namely, [lr(PPY)2(PZPY)1PF6 and [Ir(dfPPY)2(PZPY)JJPF6 (ppy is 2-ph enyl pyri dine, dfppy is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl) pyridine, and PF6_ is hexafluorophosph ate), have been prepared, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties have been investigated. In CH3CN solutions, [Ir(PPY)2(PZPY)]PF6 emits blue-green light (475 nm), which is blue-shifted by more than 100 nm with respect to the typical cationic iridium complex [lr(ppy)2(dtb-bpy)]PF6 (dtb-bpy is 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine); [lr(dfppY)2(PZPY)IPF6 with fluorine-substituted cyclometalated ligands shows further blue-shifted light emission (451 nm). Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the emissions are mainly from the ligand-centered 3 7r_7r * states of the cyclometalated ligands (ppy or dfppy). Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on [Ir(PPY)2(pzpy)]PF6 gave green-blue electroluminescence (486 nm) and had a relatively high efficiency of 4.3 cd A-' when an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was added into the light-emitting layer. LECs based on [1.r(dfpPY)2(PZPYAPF6 gave blue electroluminescence (460 nm) with CIE (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage) coordinates of (0.20, 0.28), which is the bluest light emission for iTMCs-based LECs reported so far. Our work suggests that using diimine ancillary ligands involving electron -donating nitrogen atoms (like pzpy) is an efficient strategy to turn the light emission of cationic iridium complexes to the blue region.

Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Aiming to balance the injection and transport of electrons and holes, nitrogen heterocycle and 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives were introduced in iridium(iii) complexes to obtain organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high performances. Thus, two novel Ir(iii) complexes (Ir(tfmphpm)2(pop) and Ir(tfmppm)2(pop)) with green emissions using 2-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (tfmphpm) and 2-(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine (tfmppm) as cyclometalating ligands, and 2-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenol (pop) as an ancillary ligand were synthesized. Both emitters show high photoluminescence efficiencies up to 94% and good electron mobility. The devices using two emitters with the structure of ITO (indium-tin-oxide)/MoO3 (molybdenum oxide, 5 nm)/TAPC (di-[4-(N,N-ditolyl-amino)-phenyl]cyclohexane, 30 nm)/mCP (1,3-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzene, 5 nm)/Ir(iii) complexes (6 wt%) : PPO21 (3-(diphenylphosphoryl)-9-(4-(diphenylphosphoryl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri(m-pyrid-3-yl-phenyl) benzene, 40 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) display good electroluminescence performances with a maximum luminance of 48 981 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 92.79 cd A-1 and a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 31.8%, respectively, and the efficiency roll-off ratio is low, suggesting that they have potential application in OLEDs.

Abstract:Blue-green-emitting cationic iridium complex with high luminescent efficiencies in both solutions and solid-states are essential for high-performance white light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). We report here an efficient blue-green-emitting cationic iridium complex [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)]PF6, using 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (dfppz) as the cyclometalated ligand and 2-(1-(4-tritylphenyl)-1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine (tp-pyim) as the ancillary ligand. [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)]PF6 emits efficient blue-green light with a luminescent quantum yield of 0.54 in CH3CN solution. Because of the sterically bulky group 4-tritylphenyl that is attached to the ancillary ligand, the intermolecular interaction and excited-state self-quenching of [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)]PF6 in solid states is significantly suppressed. Theoretical calculations reveal that the emission from [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)]PF6 has both metal-to-ligand charge-transfer and ligand-centered (3)pi-pi* character. LECs based on [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)]PF6 show highly efficient blue-green electroluminescence with peak current efficiency, external quantum efficiency, and power efficiency of 18.3 cd A(-1), 7.6%, and 18.01m W-1, respectively. White LECs based on [Ir(dfppz)(2)(tp-pyim)PF6 give warm-white light, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.37, 0.41), a color-rendering index up to 80, and a peak power efficiency of 11.2 lm W-1.
Highly Efficient Electroluminescence from Green‐Light‐Emitting Electrochemical Cells Based on CuI Complexes

Abstract:The complexes [Cu(dnpb)(DPEphos)](+)(X-) (dnpb and DPEphos are 2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline and bis[2-(diphenyl-phosphino)phenyl]ether, respectively, and X- is BF4-, ClO4-, or PF6-) can form high quality films with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 71 +/- 7%. Their electroluminescent properties are studied using the device-structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/complex/metal cathiode. The devices emit green light efficiently, with an emission maximum of 523 nm, and work in the mode of light-emitting electrochemical cells. The response time of the devices greatly depends on the driving voltage, the counterions, and the thickness of the complex film. After pre-biasing at 25 V for 40 s, the devices turn on instantly, with a turn-on voltage of ca. 2.9 V. A current efficiency of 56 cd A(-1) and an external quantum efficiency of 16% are realised with Al as the cathode. Using a low-work-function metal as the cathode can significantly enhance the brightness of the device almost without affecting the turn-on voltage and current efficiency. With a Ca cathode, a brightness of 150 cd m(-2) at 6 V and 4100 cd m(-2) at 25 V is demonstrated. The electroluminescent performance of these types of complexes is among the best so far for transition metal complexes with counterions.

Abstract:In this study, two iridium(iii) complexes named Ir(tfpmd)(2)(stpip) and Ir(tfpqz)(2)(stpip) were synthesized, in which 2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (tfpmd) or 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (tfpqz) was used as the cyclometalated ligand and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (stpip) as the ancillary ligand, respectively. The Ir(tfpmd)(2)(stpip) complex shows green light, peaking at 501 nm with a high phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 0.83. The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with a double-emissive-layer structure using the (tfpmd)(2)(stpip) complex displays good performances with a maximum luminance (L-max) above 39000 cd m(-2), a maximum current efficiency ((c,max)) of 90.5 cd A(-1), a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 30.8% and an extremely low efficiency roll-off. Even at the high luminance of 10000 cd m(-2), the efficiency roll-off ratio is below 5%. The Ir(tfpqz)(2)(stpip) complex shows red light, peaking at 624 nm, and its corresponding device with a single-emissive-layer structure also shows decent characteristics with a L-max of 33732 cd m(-2), a (c,max) of 28.6 cd A(-1), an EQE(max) of 18.3% and also a very low efficiency roll-off. These results suggest that the green and red Ir(iii) complexes with bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide as the ancillary ligand have the potential for use in high-efficiency OLEDs with a low efficiency roll-off.
Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical and Electroluminescent Properties of Blue-Emitting Cationic Iridium(iii) Complexes Bearing Nonconjugated Ligands.

Abstract:The development of pure-blue-to-deep-blue-emitting ionic phosphors is an ultimate challenge for full-color displays and white-light sources. Herein we report two series of short-wavelength light-emitting cationic iridium(III) complexes with nonconjugated ancillary and cyclometalating ligands, respectively. In the first series, nonconjugated 1-[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C2' (dppmmi) is used as the ancillary ligand and 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy), and 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (dfppz) are used as cyclometalating ligands. In the second one, nonconjugated 2,4-difluorobenzyl-N-pyrazole (dfbpz) is used as the cyclometalating ligand and 3-methyl-1-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C(2)' (pymbi) as the ancillary ligand. The synthesis and photophysical and electrochemical properties, together with the X-ray crystal structures of these complexes, have been investigated. At room temperature, blue-emitting complexes [Ir(ppy)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (1) and [Ir(dfppy)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (2; PF6(-) is hexafluorophosphate) show much larger photoluminescence quantum yields of 24% and 46%, respectively. On the contrary, for complexes [Ir(dfppz)2(dppmmi)]PF6 (3) and [Ir(dfbpz)2(pymbi)]PF6 (4), deep-blue luminescence is only observed at low temperature (77 K). Density functional theory calculations are used to rationalize the differences in the photophysical behavior observed upon changes of the ligands. It is shown that the electronic transition dipoles of cationic iridium complexes 1 and 2 are mainly confined to cyclometalated ligands ((3)MLCT and LC (3)π-π*) and those of complex 3 are confined to all of the ligands ((3)MLCT, LC (3)π-π*, and (3)LLCT) because of the high LUMO energy level of dfppz. The emission of 4 mainly originates from the central iridium(III) ion and cyclometalated ligand to ancillary ligand charge transfer ((3)MLCT and (3)LLCT), in contrast to commonly designed cationic complexes using carbene-type ancillary ligands, where emission originates from the cyclometalated main ligands. Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes based on complexes 1 and 2 gave blue-green (498 nm) and blue (478 nm) electroluminescence with maximum current efficiencies of 3.8 and 3.4 cd A(-1), respectively. The results indicate that introducing nonconjugated ligands into cationic iridium complexes is an effective means of achieving short-wavelength light-emitting phosphors.

Abstract:A series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes with 2-phenylquinoline as the major cyclometalated ligand and imidazole-type ancillary ligands were designed and synthesized. It is found that complexes containing active hydrogen atoms in the ancillary ligands exhibited poor electroluminescence performance. By introducing a phenyl group into the ancillary ligands to protect the active hydrogen atoms and simultaneously increase the steric hindrance of complexes, the device performance was drastically improved, due to the reduced negative effects of the active hydrogen atoms and the decreased intermolecular interaction and aggregation. We obtained high efficiency devices with a superior external quantum efficiency of 14.7%, high brightness, a low turn-on voltage of only 2.4 V and low efficiency roll-off at high luminance, the best results for yellow OLEDs based on sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes.
