Abstract:A new highly efficient red-emitting Ir(III) complex, bis [9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] [3-(pyridin-2-yl) benzaldehyde] iridium(III) (Ir-CHO), has been synthesized and characterized to investigate the impact of the electron-withdrawing formyl group on the optoelectronic properties of the resulting Ir(III) complexes. For comparison, bis [9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] [(3-(pyridin-2-yl) phenyl) methanol] iridium(III) (Ir-OH) and fac-tris[9-(4-(2-ethylhexyloxy) phenyl)-3-(4-phenylquinolin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole] iridium(III) (Ir-PQCz) were also prepared. Remarkably, Ir-CHO-doped red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) exhibited the highest performance, achieving a maximum luminance efficiency (LE) of 14.3 cd A(-1) and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 8.4%, which were better than those of Ir-OH-doped and Ir-PQCz-doped red OLEDs. The results can be attributed to the introduction of the electron-withdrawing formyl group, which improved the electron affinity in Ir-CHO and lowered the electron-injection barrier in OLEDs based on Ir-CHO. Similarly, white OLEDs (WOLEDs) with Ir-CHO as their red emitter demonstrated an excellent high LE of 26.1 cd A(-1) and an EQE of 10.9%. A combination of the thermal, photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescence (EL) properties of these Ir(III) complexes can thus lead to a conclusion that the incorporation of the electron-withdrawing formyl-substituted phenylpyridine (ppy-CHO) can apparently improve the phosphorescence of the resulting red-emitting iridium complexes and thus the OLED performance. The results suggest a simple methodology for the rational design of efficient phosphorescent complexes for light-emitting applications.

Abstract:A new heteroleptic iridium complex Ir(1-piq)(2)pt with 1-phenylisoquinoline and 3-(pyridin-29-yl)1H- 1,2,4-triazole was synthesized and characterized. The complex was incorporated into phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-terminated polyfluorene (PFO-poss) as a host polymer doped with 30% of electron transport materials 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD). Red electrophosphorescence was observed with a peak emission at 605 nm. The highest-efficiency polymer light-emitting diode was achieved with PFO-poss doped with 2% Ir(1-piq) 2pt. An external quantum efficiency of 10.4% and a luminous efficiency of 9.4 cd A(-1) were obtained at 10.8 mA cm(-2). These values were found to be 7.67% and 5.99 cd A(-1) at 100 mA cm(-2).
Application of Heteroleptic Iridium Complexes with Fluorenyl-Modified 1-Phenylisoquinoline Ligand for High-Efficiency Red Polymer Light-Emitting Devices

Abstract:A series of new heteroleptic iridium complexes bearing fluorenyl-modified 1-phenylisoquinoline as the first ligand and different ancillary ligands has been prepared and characterized. These complexes bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)acetylacetonate(Ir(DMFPQ)(2)acac)), bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazolate)( Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pt) and bis(1-(3-(9,9-dimethyl-fluoren-2-yl)phenyl)isoquinoline-C2,N')iridium(III)(2- (2-pyridyl)benzimidazolate)(Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pbi) showed red phosphorescent emissions of 615-630 nm in dichloromethane solution. The device fabricated with these complexes doped into a host polyfluorene (PFO) blend with 30% of an electron transport material 2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD)showed high device efficiencies. Ir(DMFPQ)(2)acac exhibited red emission with an external quantum efficiency(eta(ext)) of 14.3% and luminous efficiency(eta(c)) of 7.8 cd/A at 1.2 mA/cm(2) and the maximum brightness reached 10 006 cd/m(2) (Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage(CIE) chromaticity coordinates: (0.67, 0.32)) at 412 mA/cm(2). Ir(DMFPQ)(2)pt showed a eta(ext) of 13.0% and eta(c) of 9.2 cd/A at 17 mA/cm(2), 1532 cd/m(2), and the maximum brightness reached 15085 cd/m(2) (CIE: 0.64, 0.34) at 360 mA/cm2. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Cationic iridium(III) complexes show great promise as phosphorescent materials, while their utilization in organic light-emitting diodes is severely hindered by the inferior sublimability and low device performance. Here we devise a judicious strategy to develop high-efficiency sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes by simultaneously introducing sterically hindered spacers into the negative counterions, major and ancillary ligands. We have exploited a novel series of yellow and red emitters, investigated their photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviors, and thermal stabilities, and finally fabricated organic light-emitting diodes by vacuum evaporation deposition. Record-high device performance has been achieved with a superior external quantum efficiency of 16%, excellent power efficiency of 49 lm/W, maximum brightness over 27.3 X 10(3) cd/m(2), very low turn-on voltage below 2.5 V, and quite small efficiency roll-off. Our study represents a significant advance in the development of sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes and evidences their promising applications in state-of-the-art optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes consisting of light-emitting coordinated iridium(III) cations and nonluminous negative counter-ions, show excellent photophysical properties, superior electrochemical behaviors and high thermal stabilities, therefore have emerged as a new library of phosphorescent materials for various organic optoelectronic devices. Here we summarize and highlight the recent progress in sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes, regarding the material design strategies, synthetic routes, photoluminescent characteristics in both solutions and neat films, together with the current utilization in organic light-emitting diodes based on the emissive material layers fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition. Finally, we present a brief outlook thereon, indicating the great promise and brilliant application prospect of sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes in future flat-panel display and solid-state lighting technology.
Pure Red Iridium(III) Complexes Possessing Good Electron Mobility with 1,5-Naphthyridin-4-ol Derivatives for High-Performance OLEDs with an EQE over 31.

Abstract:Three iridium(III) complexes (Ir(4tfmpq)2mND, Ir(4tfmpq)2mmND, and Ir(4tfmpq)2mpND) with the 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline (4tfmpq) main ligand and 1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol derivatives (mND: 8-methyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mmND: 2,8-dimethyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol, mpND: 8-methyl-2-phenyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-ol) as ancillary ligands were studied. The complexes (Ir(4tfmpq)2mND, Ir(4tfmpq)2mmND, and Ir(4tfmpq)2mpND) emit pure red emissions of 626-630 nm with high photoluminescence quantum yields of 85.2-93.4% in CH2Cl2 and better electron mobilities than that of tri(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum. By employing three pure red emitters, all the phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes exhibited superior performances with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 31.48% and the efficiency roll-off is very mild, which are among the best results ever reported for pure red organic light-emitting diodes using Ir(III) complexes. In addition, CIE( x, y) coordinates of (0.670, 0.327) are also close to the standard red emission required by the National Television System Committee.

Abstract:A novel series of four sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes have been prepared with 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives as ancillary ligands and the same negative counter-ion, tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, which has a large steric hindrance and widely dispersed charges, thereby increasing the ionic radii, reducing the electrostatic interaction, and thus improving the volatility. Their structural, photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties have been fully characterized. Upon excitation, these compounds show polychromic emission varying from green to orange in solution, which are blue-shifted in the solid state to different extents due to π-π conjugate effects in the ancillary ligands and the resulting molecular aggregation. OLEDs fabricated by vacuum evaporation deposition demonstrated desirable device performance with high efficiency and brightness, exhibiting various electroluminescent colors dependent upon doping concentration.

Abstract:A series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes with 2-phenylquinoline as the major cyclometalated ligand and imidazole-type ancillary ligands were designed and synthesized. It is found that complexes containing active hydrogen atoms in the ancillary ligands exhibited poor electroluminescence performance. By introducing a phenyl group into the ancillary ligands to protect the active hydrogen atoms and simultaneously increase the steric hindrance of complexes, the device performance was drastically improved, due to the reduced negative effects of the active hydrogen atoms and the decreased intermolecular interaction and aggregation. We obtained high efficiency devices with a superior external quantum efficiency of 14.7%, high brightness, a low turn-on voltage of only 2.4 V and low efficiency roll-off at high luminance, the best results for yellow OLEDs based on sublimable cationic iridium(iii) complexes.

Abstract:This review is an update on recent developments in emissive iridium(III) phosphorescent complexes and their applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The emphasis is focused on complexes with emission colors spanning the whole visible spectral region, which is extremely important for applications of OLEDs in display and white-light luminance. In each color section, materials are classified according to their coordination configuration, including homoleptic, heteroleptic and tridentate, trying to clarify the relationship between the molecular structure and the photophysical properties. Since the emission color, photoluminescence efficiency and carrier mobility of the phosphors are critical for device performances, we endeavor to dig out these values along with the measuring methods from the publications, and rational chemical modifications aiming for high efficiency and carrier mobility with different colors are also discussed. Abstract:We have devised a series of novel sublimable cationic iridium(III) complexes by ligand control, investigated their photophysical properties, electrochemical behaviours and thermal stabilities, and then fabricated vacuum-evaporated-deposited organic light-emitting diodes. By doping these cationic iridium(III) complexes into a thermally activated delayed fluorescence bipolar host material at very low concentrations of 1 or 2%, we have achieved high-performance yellow-and orange-emitting diodes with peak external quantum efficiencies of 13.7 and 10.3%, respectively. All the devices show maximum luminance exceeding 27.3 103 cd m 2 and low turn-voltages varying from 2.2 to 2.5 V. To our knowledge, these values are the record performance of analogous devices based on cationic iridium(III) complexes, indicating their great promise as phosphorescent emitters for flat-panel displays and solid-state lightning techonology.

Abstract:A series of ionic diiminoiridium complexes [Ir(piq-C boolean AND N)(2)(L-N boolean AND N)](PF6) were prepared, where piq-C boolean AND N is 1-phenylisoquinolinato and L-N boolean AND N are bidentate N-coordinating ligands: 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (mbpym), 5,5'-bis(thiopen-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (tbpyt), and 5,5'-bis(9,9-dioctylfluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (FbpyF). X-ray diffraction studies of [Ir(piq)(2)(mbpym)](PF6) revealed that the iridium center adopts a distorted octahedral geometry. All complexes exhibited intense and long-lived emission at room temperature. The substituents on the 2,2'-bipyridine moieties influence the photophysical and electrochemical properties. The excited states were investigated through theoretical calculations together with photophysical and electrochemical properties. It was found that the excited state of the [Ir(piq)(2)(FbpyF)](PF6) complex can be assigned to a mixed character of (LC)-L-3 (pi(N boolean AND N) -> pi*(N boolean AND N)), (MLCT)-M-3, (LLCT)-L-3 (pi(C boolean AND N)->pi*(N boolean AND N)), and (LC)-L-3 (pi(C boolean AND N)->pi*(C boolean AND N)), In addition, the alkylfluorene-substituted complex, [Ir(piq)(2)(FbpyF)](PF6), had relatively high quantum efficiency and good film-forming ability, and it was expected to be a good candidate for lighting and display applications. Abstract:A class of efficient electrophosphorescent materials of cyclometalated iridium complexes was reported. Their UV, PL and EL properties were studied. For these iridium complexes doped polymer light-emitting devices using CN-PPP as host matrix, intense red electrophosphorescence with an external quantum efficiency of 1.3% was achieved. The effect of cyclometalated iridium complex on electrophosphorescence was also discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two new phosphorescent cationic iridium(III) cyclometalated diimine complexes with formula [Ir(L)(2)(N-N)](+)(PF6-) (HL=(9,9-diethyl-7-pyridinylfluoren-2-yl)diphenylamine); N-N=4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (1), 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (2) are reported. Both complexes are coordinated by cyclometalated ligands consisting of hole-transporting diphenylamino (DPA)- and fluorene-based 2-phenylpyridine moieties. Structural information on these heteroleptic complexes has been obtained by using an X-ray diffraction study of complex 2. Complexes 1 and 2 are morphologically and thermally stable ionic solids and are good yellow phosphors at room temperature with relatively short lifetimes in both solution and solid phases. These robust iridium complexes can be thermally vacuum-sublimed and used as phosphorescent dyes for the fabrication of high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). These devices doped with 5 wt % 1 can produce efficient electrophosphorescence with a maximum brightness of up to 15 610 cd m(-2) and a peak external quantum efficiency of ca. 7% photons per electron that corresponds to a luminance efficiency of ca. 20 cd A(-1) and a power efficiency of ca. 19 lm W-1. These results show that charged iridium(III) materials are useful alternative electrophosphors for use in evaporated devices in order to realize highly efficient doped OLEDs.

Abstract:Six novel Ir(C^N)2(L^X)-type heteroleptic iridium complexes with deep-red and near-infrared region (NIR)-emitting coverage were constructed through the cross matching of various cyclometalating (C^N) and ancillary (LX) ligands. Here, three novel C^N ligands were designed by introducing the electron-withdrawing group CF3 on the ortho (o-), meta (m-), and para (p-) positions of the phenyl ring in the 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq) group, which were combined with two electron-rich LX ligands (dipba and dipg), respectively, leading to subsequent iridium complexes with gradually changing emission colors from deep red (≈660 nm) to NIR (≈700 nm). Moreover, a series of phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were fabricated by employing these phosphors as dopant emitters with two doping concentrations, 5% and 10%, respectively. They exhibited efficient electroluminescence (EL) with significantly high EQE values: >15.0% for deep red light0 (λmax = 664 nm) and >4.0% for NIR cases (λmax = 704 nm) at a high luminance level of 100 cd m−2. This work not only provides a promising approach for finely tuning the emission color of red phosphors via the easily accessible molecular design strategy, but also enables the establishment of an effective method for enriching phosphorescent-emitting molecules for practical applications, especially in the deep-red and near-infrared region (NIR).

Abstract:Three high -efficiency deep -red neutral iridium(III) complexes are rationally designed and prepared using a mild method by introducing condensed ring (anthraquinonyl isoquinoline) as the cyclometalated ligand. The frequently -used ancillary ligands (acetylacetone, hexafluoroacetylacetone, picolinic acid) help to regulate the photophysical properties of the three iridium(III) complexes. In both solution and aggregated states, these three iridium(III) phosphors presented the intense deep -red phosphorescence, with the peak wavelength at 676, 634, and 648 nm, respectively. Additionally, Ir-acac, Ir-CF 3 and Ir-pic exhibited high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 20 %, 18 %, and 17 % in dichloromethane, respectively. Furthermore, the efficient solutionprocessed electroluminescent devices were demonstrated with these emitters. The maximum external quantum efficiencies for the devices reached 5.94 % (Ir-acac), 0.55 % (Ir-CF 3 ), and 3.16 % (Ir-pic), featuring the electroluminescent spectral peaks at 654, 632, 644 nm, respectively.
