Abstract:Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) emulsion particles with positive charges on the surface were synthesized by emulsion polymerization using cationic surfactant octotyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as emulsifier. The suspension of montmorillonite was slowly dropped into the emulsion. Through the interaction between the negative charges on the montmorillonite layers and the cations on the surface of poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) particles, the montmorillonite layers and emulsion particles could assemble and absorb on each other by themselves. The change of δ voltage and particle size of the emulsion during the process of dropping was characterized, which demonstrated that the emulsion particles and montmorillonite layers absorbed on each other by the electrovalent bond and an intersectional structure was formed in the complex emulsion. Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile)/montmorillonite nanocomposite was obtained after coagulation. The structure of nanocomposite was characterized with XRD and TEM. The results indicated that montmorillonite was exfoliated into layers with a thickness of several nanometers and uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.
Preparation and Structure of Polystyrene/Montmorillonite Nanocomposite

Abstract:The organic montmorillonite VC18-MMT was prepared by the exchanging inorganic cations with vinylbenzyldimethyloctadecylammionun chloride (VOAC) which could be co-polymerized with styrene. The predispersion of VC18-MMT was realized via sonicating the suspension of the montmorillonite particles in emulsifier solution, and then the styrene was added into the system and the in situ emulsion polymerization was carried out to prepare PS/VC18-MMT nanocomposites. The structure of final nanocomposites was characterized by XRD and TEM. The results indicated that the most of montmorillonite was fully exfoliated into individual layers and uniformly dispersed in the polystyrene matrix. The dynamic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by DMA, which demonstrated that the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of polystyrene were increased by compositing of montmorillonite. The polymer grafted on the layers of montmorillonite could be obtained by ion exchanging with lithium cations. The structure and average molecular weight of the polymer were characterized by NMR and GPC. The results showed that the polymer grafted on layers of montmorillonite was identifed as the copolymer of styrene with VOAC and the average molecular weight of the copolymer was lower than that of free polystyrene. One copolymer chain averagely comprised about 25 VOAC molecules, which can be calculated through the concentration of VOAC and the mass of copolymer in the galleries of montmorillonite.
Preparation of Polypropylene/MMT Nanocomposites Using Complex Supported Catalysts

Abstract:A new type of heterogeneous Z-N catalyst was prepared by using mixture of Mg-Montmorillonite (MMT) and Mg(OEt)2 as complex support. Using the complex supported catalysts the polypropylene(PP)/MMT nanocomposites were produced via in-situ polymerization. The complex supported catalysts have much higher catalytic activity and give higher PP molecular weight than catalysts using MMT as support alone. The catalytic activity was increased and the Al/Cat ratio needed for polymerizing could be reduced when retreatment of TiCl4 was applied during the support procedure. It is found that under lower Al/Cat ratio, the activity of the complex supported catalyst Cat 5 prepared from Mg-MMT/Mg(OEt)2/TiCl4/ EB can be improved by adding a few amount of styrene during polymerization. Among all the complex supported catalysts studied, the Cat 6 prepared from Mg-MMT/Mg(OEt)2/ Ti(OBa)4/ TiCl4/ EB has the best performance of high activity and low Al/Cat needed, and it is believed to be the suitable catalyst for the preparation of PP/MMT nanocomposites. Results from WAXS analysis and TEM observation of the composites indicate that MMT layers have exfoliated and dispersed in PP matrix during polymerization. The melt temperature (Tm) of the products is similar to commodity PP.
Preparation and characterization of organic modified montmorillonite/polylactic acid nanocomposites

Abstract:With PLA(polylactic acid) as matrix,CTAB(cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) with CEC(cation exchange capacity) at 0.5 or 1.0 as modifiers of NMMT[sodium MMT (montmorillonite)],the CMMT(CEC modified MMT) was prepared.Then,the TFC (secondary modified MMT)was prepared by CTS (chitosan) modified CMMT.Finally,the PLA/CMMT and PLA/TFC nanocomposites were prepared by melting intercalation method.The research results showed that the characteristic peak of modifier appear in FT-IR (infrared spectra) of CMMT and TFC,and the X-ray diffraction peak moves to the left,which indicates that the interlayer spacing of TFC and CMMT is larger than that of NMMT.The modified PLA has the good physical and mechanical properties,but the reunion phenomenon is more serious with increasing modified NMMT content in system.The nanocomposite had the relatively best combination property when mass fraction of modified NMMT was 3％ in total raw materials,and it has the good environmental protection,compatibility,biodegradable and other advantages.
Exfoliated PS/MMT nanocomposites prepared by emulsion polymerization

Abstract:The cationic surfactant trimethyloctadecylammonium chloride (OTAC) and the reactive cationic surfactant allyldimethyloctadecylammonium chloride (ADAC) were used for the intercalation of MMT.PS/C-18 MMT and PS/AC(18) MMT nanocomposites were synthesized by in. situ emulsion polymerization. The results of XRD and TEM showed that MMT was exfoliated into sheets of individual layers or few layers during polymerization and randomly dispersed in the PS matrix. TGA curves indicated that the degradation temperature of the nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of MMT, moreover, the degradation temperature of PS/AC(18) MMT was higher than that of PS/C-18 MMT due to the. existence of chemical links between PS and the layers of organ-MMT. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the storage modulus G' and loss factor tan delta of PS were increased and decreased respectively with the addition of MMT. The glass transition temperature of PS/AC(18) MMT is higher than that of the pure PS while the glass transition temperature of PS/C-18 MMT is slightly lower than that of the pure Ps.
Study on thermal stability of PP/MMT nanocomposites

Abstract:The comparison was made between thermal stability of polypropylene/montmorillonite(PP/MMT) nanocomposites which were prepared by melt-mixing and in-situ polymerization process respectively and the function of MMT in nanocomposite was studied.It was indicated by TEM photo that MMT nanocomposite prepared by both methods had better dispersion.TGA analysis showed that the thermal stability of PP/MMT materials prepared by in-situ polymerization was improved remarkably due to the existence of montmorillonite layers whether in air or nitrogen atmosphere.But the thermal stability of the materials prepared by melt-mixing presented different changes according to the atmosphere,which were declined in nitrogen atmosphere while increased in air atmosphere.

Abstract:Schematic diagram of preparation and dispersion mechanism of TPS/MMT nanocomposites. In this study, a new mixing method and its principle via the synergy of phase‐transition and ultrasonic based on an elongational flow field were introduced in detail. Thermoplastic starch (TPS)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites from native corn starch were prepared using this novel method. The scanning electron microscope and x‐ray diffraction analyses confirmed that MMT can be efficiently exfoliated and dispersed evenly in the TPS matrix. Dynamic rheological analysis showed that exfoliated MMT obstructed starch molecular movement, increasing the viscosity and elasticity of TPS/MMT nanocomposites. Thermogravimetric analysis highlighted that evenly dispersed MMT enhanced the thermal stabilities of TPS/MMT nanocomposites. When the MMT content was 9 wt%, compared with nanocomposites prepared by melt blending alone, the tensile strength of TPS/MMT nanocomposites prepared by the new method increased from 5.8 to 14.3 MPa, and the oxygen permeability coefficient decreased from 13.43 × 10−15 cm3·cm/(cm2·s·Pa) to 5.52 × 10−15 cm3·cm/(cm2·s·Pa). This new method provided a promising pathway for the preparation of well‐exfoliated and evenly dispersed polymer‐based nanocomposites with excellent mechanical properties and barrier properties. Highlights A new mixing method based on the synergy of phase‐transition and ultrasonic in an extensional flow field for preparing exfoliated and dispersed TPS/MMT nanocomposites was proposed. The new method promoted the exfoliation and dispersion of MMT in the TPS matrix. The performance of TPS/MMT nanocomposites was significantly improved with the introduction of phase‐transition and ultrasonic.

Abstract:Organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) was introduced into SEBS-g-MA toughened poly(phenylene oxide)/polyamide-6 (PPO/PA6) blends simply by melt extrusion. The effects of OMMT on morphology, rheology, and mechanical behaviors of toughened PPO/PA6 nanocomposites were studied by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, capillary rheometer and mechanical tests. The addition of OMMT could decrease the size of dispersed PPO domains in PA6 matrix and melt viscosity of the toughened PPO/PA6 nanocomposites. Besides, exfoliated OMMT also brought significant improvement of tensile properties and heat deflection temperature (HDT), simultaneously. For nanocomposites with exfoliated OMMT, OMMT induced more coreshell toughening particles with the optimized size, and thus, elastomer-OMMT synergistic toughening was achieved in the PPO/PA6 nanocomposites. Consequently, PPO/PA6 nanocomposites with high tensile strength, excellent impact performance, improved HDT, and good processability were obtained.

Abstract:In this work, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and methacryloyloxyethyhrimethyl ammonium chloride were used to prepare organophilic montmorillonite (O-MMT). Then, polypropylene (PP)clay nanocomposites were prepared by the in situ grafting polymerization of styrene (St)-containing O-MMT onto PP with tert-butyl perbenzoate as an initiator in the solid state. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were applied to study the structure of the layered silicate and modified PP. The surfaces of the composites and, thus, the distribution of the clay in the PP matrix were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The rheology and mechanical properties were studied and are discussed. According to the characterization results, OMMT and St were already grafted onto the PP main chain. Also, the intercalated structure of montmorillonite could be stabilized, and a stable exfoliated structure could be attained. Namely, intercalated PP/OMMT nanocomposites were obtained. The rheological results clearly show that these PP/OMMT nanocomposites had long-chain-branched structures. The peroxide modification of PP had minor effects on the tensile and bending strengths of the modified PP; however, this modification resulted in a significant reduction in the impact strength. Abstract:Polymer-grafted montmorillonite (MMT) hybrid composites which possess a hard backbone of MMT and a soft shell of brush-like polystyrene (PSt) were prepared via "grafting from" strategy based on nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) as mediator. Three steps were used to graft PSt chains to the surface of MMT: anchoring of methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) onto the surface of MMT by ion exchange reaction first. And then, the surface alkoxyamine initiator was produced in a one-step process by reacting simultaneously TEMPO, BPO, and DMC in the presence of MMT. Next, PSt chains with controlled molecular weights and polydispersities were grown from the alkoxyamine functionalized MMT surface. Abstract:Ca2+-Montmorillonite or Na+-Montmorillonite(MMT)was modified by using epoxy compound(EP)to obtain the organic montmorillonite(OMMT).The effect of EP content and interlayer water content on modification was studied.The mechanism of organic modification of montmorillonite by solid-state reaction with epoxy compound was discussed.The results of X-ray diffraction(XRD)and infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)showed that EP intercalated into MMT layers.The heat resistant temperature of EP-modified OMMT was up to 380.3℃.
Preparation and characterization of bimodal mesoporous montmorillonite by using single template

Abstract:Bimodal mesoporous montmorillonite had been synthesized from montmorillonite and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) by using cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as single template. The materials exhibited two kinds of mesopores: one is mesopore in interlayers of montmorillonite with mean sizes of 2.9nm, the other is mesopore out of layers of montmorillonite with mean sizes of 3.9nm. After being heated at 850°C for 2h and 10 days hydrothermal reaction at 100°C the sample kept a high specific surface area and porous structure. At the same time, we found two mesopores had different formed condition, structure, pore size, and especially, stability. They both had good thermal stability, but the smaller pore showed more highly hydrothermal stability than the bigger one. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR). The result indicated that layered structure of montmorillonite had been present as porous wall. The stability of the as prepared mesoporous montmorillonite depended on the stability of montmorillonite present in pore wall.

Abstract:A montmorillonite modified by octadecylammonium salt (OMMT) was prepared. A polyurethane (PU)/montmorillonite nanocomposite was synthesized by in-situ polymerization using the OMMT, poly( propylene glycol), 4,4-diphenylmethylate diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol. The MMT platelets were dispersed in PU matrix on a 10 similar to 50 nm scale. Compared to that of pure PU, the tensile strength and tear strength of the PU/OMMT nanocomposites increased, respectively, and the MMT platelets dispersed on a nanometer scale enhanced the PU. The temperature of initial weight loss of the PU/OMMT nanocomposites was lower than that of pure PU because of the acid catalytic action of protonated MMT platelets in the first thermodegradation step. But its temperature of initial weight loss was higher than that of pure PU because of the barrier effect of the MMT platelets in the second thermodegradation step.

Abstract:Fe-montmorillonite (Fe-MMT) was hydrothermally synthesized. It was modified by cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and successfully synthesized polystyrene/Fe-montmorillonite (PS/Fe-MMT) nanocomposites via bulk polymerization for the first time. The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution electronic microscopy (HREM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter. XRD, TEM and HREM indicated that both intercalated and exfoliated-intercalated structures were observed. In comparison with pure PS, the thermal stability was notably improved in the presence of clay. From cone calorimetry it was found that the peak of heat release rate (HRR) was significantly reduced by the formation of the nanocomposites. Also intercalated nanocomposites were more effective than exfoliated-intercalated nanocomposites in fire retardancy.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:In this paper, a new type of organophilic montmorillonite, co-treated with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 4,4'-diphenymethylate diisocyanate (MDI), was modified and applied to prepare polyurethane/montmorillonite nanocomposites via in situ polymerization. The nanoscale montmorillonite layers were exfoliated and dispersed relatively homogeneously in the polyurethane matrix, and characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal degradation temperature of the nanocomposites increased, as compared with pristine polyurethane. Dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the constraining effect of exfoliated montmorillonite layers on polyurethane chains, which benefited the increased storage modulus and increased glass transition temperature. Tensile tests showed that the exfoliated nanocomposites were reinforced and toughened by the addition of nanometer-size montmorillonite layers. (C) 2006 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites with a β nucleating agent (β-NA) were prepared via melt-extrusion using polypropylene/polyolefin elastomer-g-maleic anhydride/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (PPMH), as a compatibilizer. The effects of the PPMH content on the structure and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. It was revealed that the PPMH enhanced the interfacial interactions between the OMMT surface and the PP matrix, and the extent of intercalation and exfoliation of the OMMT as well as the crystallization properties of the nanocomposites depended significantly on the PPMH content. The impact strength and melt strength of the β-nucleated PP/OMMT blend with 60 wt% PPMH, 40 wt% PP and 3 wt% of OMMT, were about 4 and 6 times higher than that of neat PP, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal stabilities of the composites were better than that of pure PP.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of three different treatments on the morphology, microstructure, and the thermal characteristics of a montmorillonite (Mt) sample, by using hydrochloric acid (HCl), tributyl tetradecyl phosphonium chloride (TTPC) surfactant, and γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS). The resultant nanofillers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the amount of chemical grafting of the γ-MPS was increased after the acid treatment, whereas the amount of intercalation of the TTPC surfactant was decreased. The preintercalation of TTPC or silylation of γ-MPS, for the Mt sample, had a certain hindrance effect on its subsequent silylation or intercalation treatments. Furthermore, the effect of four different nanofillers on the thermal stability properties of the polystyrene (PS) matrix were also investigated. The results showed an increase in thermal stability for the triple-functionalized Mt, compared with the double-functionalized samples. The onset decomposition temperatures and the maximum mass loss temperatures of the PS nanocomposites were increased by 27 °C and 32 °C, respectively, by the incorporation of triple-modified Mt, as a result of the good exfoliation and dispersion of the nanolayers, more favorable polymer–nanofiller interaction, as well as the formation of a more remarkable tortuous pathway in the continuous matrix.

Abstract:A novel method was used to prepare poly(propylene)/montmorillonite/calcium carbonate nanocomposites by melt-mixing, using pristine montmorillonite (MMT), hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and a matrix in a twin-screw extruder. Two different sizes of calcium carbonate were used (nanosized CaCO3 and micron-sized CaCO3, the average sizes being 60 nm and 12 pm respectively). The nanocomposite structure was evidenced using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution electronic microscopy (HREM). Tensile tests and Izod notch impact tests suggested that the incorporation of nanosized CaCO3 into PP/ montmorillonite nanocomposites increased the mechanical properties of the composites, but the improvement in the microsized CaCO3-filled PP/montmorillonite nanocomposites was found to be minimal. The thermal stability and flammability properties were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a cone calorimeter respectively.
