Abstract:The nature of the parent compound of a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) often plays a pivotal role in determining its superconductivity. The parent compounds of the cuprate HTSs are antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulators, while those of the iron-pnictide HTSs are metals with spin-density-wave order. Here we report the electronic identification of two insulating parental phases and one semi-conducting parental phase of the newly discovered family of KxFe2-ySe2 superconductors. The two insulating phases exhibit Mott-insulator-like signatures, and one of the insulating phases is even present in the superconducting and semiconducting KxFe2-ySe2 compounds. However, it is mesoscopically phase-separated from the superconducting or semiconducting phase. Moreover, we find that both the superconducting and semiconducting phases are free of the magnetic and vacancy orders present in the insulating phases, and that the electronic structure of the superconducting phase could be developed by doping the semiconducting phase with electrons. The rich electronic properties discovered in these parental phases of the KxFe2-ySe2 superconductors provide the foundation for studying the anomalous behavior in this new class of iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:The recently discovered K-Fe-Se high-temperature superconductor has caused heated debate regarding the nature of its parent compound. Transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and STM measurements have suggested that its parent compound could be insulating, semiconducting, or even metallic [M. H. Fang, H.-D. Wang, C.-H. Dong, Z.-J. Li, C.-M. Feng, J. Chen, and H. Q. Yuan, Europhys. Lett. 94, 27009 (2011); F. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. X 1, 021020 (2011); and W. Li et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 057003 (2012)]. Because the magnetic ground states associated with these different phases have not yet been identified and the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity is not fully understood, the real parent compound of this system remains elusive. Here, we report neutron-diffraction experiments that reveal a semiconducting antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with rhombus iron vacancy order. The magnetic order of the semiconducting phase is the same as the stripe AFM order of the iron pnictide parent compounds. Moreover, while the sqrt[5]×sqrt[5] block AFM phase coexists with superconductivity, the stripe AFM order is suppressed by it. This leads us to conjecture that the new semiconducting magnetic ordered phase is the true parent phase of this superconductor.

Abstract:We report our study of the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the ternary Fe(Se1-xTex)0.82 (0<=x<=1.0) system. We discovered a new superconducting phase with Tc,max = 14 K in the 0.3 < x < 1.0 range. This superconducting phase is suppressed when the sample composition approaches the end member FeTe0.82, which exhibits an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order. We discuss the relationship between the superconductivity and magnetism of this material system in terms of recent results from neutron scattering measurements. Our results and analyses suggest that superconductivity in this new class of Fe-based compounds is associated with magnetic fluctuations, and therefore may be unconventional in nature.

Abstract:We study the relationship between precipitate morphology and superconductivity in KxFe1.6+ySe2 single crystals grown by self-flux method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that superconducting phase forms a network in the samples quenched above iron vacancy order-disorder transition temperature Ts. For the samples obtained by natural cooling down to room temperature in the furnace, referred to as furnace cooling, superconducting phase aggregates into micrometer-sized rectangular bars and aligns as disconnected chains. Accompanying this change in morphology the superconducting shielding fraction is strongly reduced in the furnace-cooling samples. By post-annealing above Ts followed by quenching in room temperature water, the network recovers with superconducting shielding fraction approaching 80%. A reversible change from network to bar chains was realized by a secondary heat treatment in annealed samples showing large shielding fraction, i.e., heating above Ts followed by slow cooling across Ts. The large shielding fraction observed in KxFe1.6+ySe2 single crystals actually results from a uniform and contiguous distribution of superconducting phase. Through the measurements of temperature dependent x-ray diffraction, it is found that the reflection corresponding to superconducting phase merges into that from iron vacancy ordered phase upon warming. It is a solid solution above Ts, where iron atoms randomly occupy the both Fe1 and Fe2 sites in iron vacancy disordering status. By cooling across Ts, superconducting phase precipitates while iron vacancy ordered phase forms together, suggesting that phase separation in KxFe1.6+ySe2 single crystals is driven by the iron vacancy order-disorder transition.

Abstract: The search for new superconducting materials has been spurred on by the discov-ery of iron-based superconductors whose structure and composition is qualitatively different from the cuprates. The study of one such material,KxFe2-ySe2 with a critical temperature of 32 K,is made more difficult by the fact that it separates into two phases- a dominant antiferromagnetic insulating phase K2Fe4Se5,and a minority superconducting phase. In this paper,we identify a three-dimensional net-work of superconducting filaments within this material and present evidence to suggest that the super-conducting phase consists of a single Fe vacancy of every eight Fe-sites arranged in a 8 × 10 paral?lelogram structure.

Abstract:Neutron diffraction has been used to study the lattice and magnetic structures of the insulating and superconducting Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$. For the insulating Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$, neutron polarization analysis and single-crystal neutron diffraction unambiguously confirm the earlier proposed $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ block antiferromagnetic structure. For superconducting samples (${T}_{c}=30$ K), we find that in addition to the tetragonal $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ superlattice structure transition at 513 K, the material develops a separate $\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{2}$ superlattice structure at a lower temperature of 480 K. These results suggest that superconducting Rb${}_{y}$Fe${}_{1.6+x}$Se${}_{2}$ is phase separated with coexisting $\sqrt{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{2}$ and $\sqrt{5}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{5}$ superlattice structures.

Abstract:Since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides in early 2008, many iron-based superconductors with different structures have been discovered, with the highest transition temperature to date being 57 K. By the end of 2010, another kind of new superconductor, the Fe-based chalcogenide K1-xFe2-ySe2 was discovered. A naive counting of the electrons in the system would lead to the conclusion that the system is heavily electron overdoped (similar to 0.4 e/Fe). Band structure calculations further support this speculation and predict that the hole pockets which are found in the iron pnictides may be missing. This greatly challenges the widely perceived picture that the superconducting pairing is established by exchanging antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations and that the electrons are scattered between the electron and hole pockets. Later, it was found that both potassium and iron might be deficient in K1-xFe2-ySe2, yielding to a picture of phase separation. In this picture the superconducting phase and the AF phase may separate spatially into different regions. This generates further curiosity about what the real superconducting phase is, what the relationship is between the superconducting phase and the AF phase, and what the parent state is for the superconducting phase. We propose a 'spider web' model for the phase separation, which can explain both the transport and magnetic data. In this paper, we review the status of research in this rapidly growing field and list the important and unresolved issues as perspectives for future research.

Abstract:The iron‐based KxFe2‐ySe2 superconductor displays phase separation, leading to the coexisting metallic phase embedded in an antiferromagnetic matrix. The metallic character of the system is believed to arise from a percolative granular network affecting normal as well as superconducting state properties. This network can be manipulated and controlled through thermal treatments. In this study, we have used scanning X‐ray micro‐fluorescence to visualize morphology of the phase separation and the percolation in KxFe2‐ySe2, manipulated by distinct thermal treatments, i.e., fast quenching and slow cooling. We find a differing spatial correlation between Fe and K in differently treated samples, ascribed to different Fe vacancy ordering. We have identified an intermediate phase that acts as an interface between the two phases. The high temperature quenching produces oriented clustered microstructure in which the percolation threshold is lower and hence a more effective network for the transport pathways. Instead, the slow cooling results in larger interfaces around the percolation threshold affecting the superconducting properties of the system. The results provide a quantitative characterization of microstructural morphology of differently grown KxFe2‐ySe2 showing potential for the design of electronic devices based on sub‐micron scale chemical phase separation, thus opening avenues for further studies of complex heterogeneous structures.

Abstract:Superconductivity in iron selenides has experienced a rapid growth, but not without major inconsistencies in the reported properties. For alkali-intercalated iron selenides, even the structure of the superconducting phase is a subject of debate, in part because the onset of superconductivity is affected much more delicately by stoichiometry and preparation than in cuprate or pnictide superconductors. If high-quality, pure, superconducting intercalated iron selenides are ever to be made, the intertwined physics and chemistry must be explained by systematic studies of how these materials form and by and identifying the many coexisting phases. To that end, we prepared pure K_2Fe_4Se_5 powder and superconductors in the K_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 system, and examined differences in their structures by high-resolution synchrotron and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. We found four distinct phases: semiconducting K_2Fe_4Se_5, a metallic superconducting phase K_xFe_2Se_2 with x ranging from 0.38 to 0.58, an insulator KFe_{1.6}Se_2 with no vacancy ordering, and an oxidized phase K_{0.51(5)}Fe_{0.70(2)}Se that forms the PbClF structure upon exposure to moisture. We find that the vacancy-ordered phase K_2Fe_4Se_5 does not become superconducting by doping, but the distinct iron-rich minority phase K_xFe_2Se_2 precipitates from single crystals upon cooling from above the vacancy ordering temperature. This coexistence of metallic and semiconducting phases explains a broad maximum in resistivity around 100 K. Further studies to understand the solubility of excess Fe in the K_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 structure will shed light on the maximum fraction of superconducting K_xFe_2Se_2 that can be obtained by solid state synthesis.

Abstract:We elucidate the existing controversies in the newly discovered K-doped iron selenide (K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2-z)) superconductors. The stoichiometric KFe(2)Se(2) with √2 × √2 charge ordering was identified as the parent compound of K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2-z) superconductor using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The superconductivity is induced in KFe(2)Se(2) by either Se vacancies or interacting with the antiferromagnetic K(2)Fe(4)Se(5) compound. In total, four phases were found to exist in K(x)Fe(2-y)Se(2-z): parent compound KFe(2)Se(2), superconducting KFe(2)Se(2) with √2 × √5 charge ordering, superconducting KFe(2)Se(2-z) with Se vacancies, and insulating K(2)Fe(4)Se(5) with √5 × √5 Fe vacancy order. The phase separation takes place at the mesoscopic scale under standard molecular beam epitaxy conditions.

Abstract:We have combined elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity measurements to study single-crystal samples of KxFe2-ySe2, which contain the superconducting phase that has a transition temperature of similar to 31 K. In the inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we observe both the spin-wave excitations resulting from the block antiferromagnetic ordered phase and the resonance that is associated with the superconductivity in the superconducting phase, demonstrating the coexistence of these two orders. From the temperature dependence of the intensity of the magnetic Bragg peaks, we find that well before entering the superconducting state, the development of the magnetic order is interrupted, at similar to 42 K. We consider this result to be evidence for the physical separation of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases; the suppression is possibly due to the proximity effect of the superconducting fluctuations on the antiferromagnetic order.

Abstract:We report significantly enhanced magnetic moment in K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) single crystals with sharp Tc and bulk superconductivity obtained by postannealing and quenching process. There are two Fe sites in the K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) unit cell: Fe1, which has higher symmetry with longer average Fe-Se bond length, and Fe2, which has lower symmetry with shorter average Fe-Se bond length. Temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) analysis results on quenched and as-grown K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) crystals show that quenched K0.69(2)Fe1.45(1)Se2.00(1) have increased average Fe-Se bond length and decreased static disorder. Our results indicate that nonzero population of Fe1 sites is the key structural parameter that governs the bulk superconductivity. We also show clear evidence that Fe1 sites carry higher magnetic moment than Fe2 sites.
