Abstract:Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry are expected to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effects, due to their large Berry curvature. Here, we report a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate, Co3Sn2S2, with a quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure consisting of stacked Kagomé lattices. This lattice provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic topological quantum states. We observe a negative magnetoresistance that is consistent with the chiral anomaly expected from the presence of Weyl nodes close to the Fermi level. The anomalous Hall conductivity is robust against both increased temperature and charge conductivity, which corroborates the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in momentum space. Owing to the low carrier density in this material and the significantly enhanced Berry curvature from its band structure, the anomalous Hall conductivity and the anomalous Hall angle simultaneously reach 1130 Ω-1 cm-1 and 20%, respectively, an order of magnitude larger than typical magnetic systems. Combining the Kagomé-lattice structure and the out-of-plane ferromagnetic order of Co3Sn2S2, we expect that this material is an excellent candidate for observation of the quantum anomalous Hall state in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Abstract Weyl semimetals exhibit unusual surface states and anomalous transport phenomena. It is hard to manipulate the band structure topology of specific Weyl materials. Topological transport phenomena usually appear at very low temperatures, which sets challenges for applications. In this work, we demonstrate the band topology modification via a weak magnetic field in a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal candidate, Co 2 MnAl, at room temperature. We observe a tunable, giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) induced by the transition involving Weyl points and nodal rings. The AHE conductivity is as large as that of a 3D quantum AHE, with the Hall angle ( Θ H ) reaching a record value ( $$\tan {\Theta }^{H}=0.21$$ tan Θ H = 0.21 ) at the room temperature among magnetic conductors. Furthermore, we propose a material recipe to generate large AHE by gaping nodal rings without requiring Weyl points. Our work reveals an intrinsically magnetic platform to explore the interplay between magnetic dynamics and topological physics for developing spintronic devices.

Abstract:A topological magnetic material showcases a multitude of intriguing properties resulting from the compelling interplay between topology and magnetism. These include notable phenomena such as a large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and a topological Hall effect (THE). In most cases, topological transport phenomena are prevalent at temperatures considerably lower than room temperature, presenting a challenge for practical applications. However, the noncollinear ferromagnetic (FM) LaMn2Ge2, characterized by a Mn square-net lattice and a notably high Curie temperature (TC) of approximately 325 K, defies this trend as a topological semimetal. This work observes a giant topological Hall resistivity, ρ y x T $\rho _{yx}^T$ , of ≈4.5 µΩ cm at room temperature when the angle between the applied field and the c-axis is 75°, which is significantly higher than state-of-the-art materials with noncoplanar spin structures. The single crystal neutron diffraction measurements agree with an incommensurate conical magnetic structure as the ground state. This observation suggests the enhanced spin chirality resulting from the noncoplanar spin configuration when the applied field is away from the magnetic easy axis as the origin of a large contribution to the observed THE. The findings unequivocally demonstrate that the FM LaMn2Ge2 holds great promise as a potential topological semimetal for spintronic applications even at room temperature.

Abstract:The kagome lattice system has been identified as a fertile ground for the emergence of a number of new quantum states,including superconductivity,quantum spin liquids,and topological electronic states.This has attracted significant interest within the field of condensed matter physics.Here,we present the observation of an anomalous Hall effect in an iron-based kagome antiferromagnet LuFe 6 Sn 6 ,which implies a non-zero Berry curvature in this compound.By means of extensive magnetic measurements,a high Neel temperature,T N =552 K,and a spin reorientation behavior were identified and a simple temperature-field phase diagram was constructed.Furthermore,this compound was found to exhibit a large Sommerfeld coefficient of γ=87 mJ·mol -1 ·K -2 ,suggesting the presence of a strong electronic correlation effect.Our research indicates that LuFe 6 Sn 6 is an intriguing compound that may exhibit magnetism,strong correlation,and topological states.

Abstract:Quantum transport in magnetic topological insulators reveals the strong interplay between the magnetism and topology of electronic band structures. A recent experiment on magnetically doped topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films showed the anomalous temperature dependence of the magnetoconductivity while their field dependence presents a clear signature of weak anti-localization [Tkac et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036406(2019)]. Here we demonstrate that the tiny mass of the surface electrons induced by the bulk magnetization leads to a temperature-dependent correction to the \pi Berry phase, and generates a decoherence mechanism to the phase coherence length of the surface electrons. As a consequence, the quantum correction to the conductivity can exhibit non-monotonic behavior by decreasing the temperature. This effect is attributed to the close relation of the Berry phase and quantum interference of the topological surface electrons in quantum topological materials.

Abstract:Chiral antiferromagnetic (AFM) Weyl semimetal Mn3Sn shows a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) around room temperature, due to the Berry curvature generated by Weyl nodes in electronic dispersions. Here, we study the temperature- and angular-dependent Hall effect and magnetic measurement in single-crystalline Mn3Sn. There are some intriguing phenomena: first, a large hysteretic-type AHE has been observed only above 270K, while the coercivity is around 300Oe and independent of temperature. Second, the temperature- and angular-dependent topological Hall effect is obtained, which may stem from the real space topological spin texture. Third, the coercivity extracted from the angular-dependent AHE is well fitted with the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, which reflects the evolution of domain walls and magnetic anisotropy. Thus, it shows that not only the topological structure in momentum space but also the real space topological spin texture plays an important role in anomalous transport properties of Mn3Sn. Our work pushes forward to the realization of room temperature AFM spintronics and paves the way toward the possible devices based on the unconventional Hall effect.

Abstract:Topological magnetic semimetals promise large Berry curvature through the distribution of the topological Weyl nodes or nodal lines and further novel physics with exotic transport phenomena. We present a systematic study of the structural and magnetotransport properties of Co$_2$MnGa films from thin (20 nm) to bulk like behavior (80 nm), in order to understand the underlying mechanisms and the role on the topology. The magnetron sputtered Co$_2$MnGa films are $L$$2_{\mathrm {1}}$-ordered showing very good heteroepitaxy and a strain-induced tetragonal distortion. The anomalous Hall conductivity was found to be maximum at a value of 1138 S/cm, with a corresponding anomalous Hall angle of 13 %, which is comparatively larger than topologically trivial metals. There is a good agreement between the theoretical calculations and the Hall conductivity observed for the 80 nm film, which suggest that the effect is intrinsic. Thus, the Co$_2$MnGa compound manifests as a promising material towards topologically-driven spintronic applications.

Abstract:Recently, \b{eta}-Mn-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys have gained particular attentions as a new class of chiral magnets hosting skyrmion phase. In this work, a giant topological Hall effect(THE)is observed during the wide temperature range below 220 K in the chiral magnet Co7Zn8Mn5. The maximum topological Hall resistivity, -2.1 {\mu}{\Omega} cm, is obtained at 10 K. Moreover, the observed THE effect persists up to Tc, which is mainly derived from the noncoplanar spin structure with scalar spin chirality. In contrast, the formation of skyrmion phase is substantiated at the temperature interval slightly below Tc by adopting the magnetization and ac-susceptibility. Further, the possible signal of skyrmion-conical coexisting phase is found based on the out-of-phase component in magnetoelastic measurements. These results strongly suggest the chiral magnet Co7Zn8Mn5 compound should be an excellent candidate to study the topological magnetic properties and high temperature skyrmions.

Topological Contributions to the Anomalous Nernst and Hall Effect in the Chiral Double-Helimagnetic System

Abstract:MnP and FeP are show complex magnetic spiral states with geometric phase contributions to the anomalous Hall effect and the topological Hall effect, where both have thermoelectric Nernst counterparts. We use state of the art first principle calculations to show that both Hall and Nernst effects are enhanced in MnP and FeP due to the temperature dependent magnetic texture. At ambient pressure the inversion breaking crystals shows a transition from a double-spiral helimagnetic phase to a topologically trivial magnetic phase. This helimagnetic structure is determined by exchange frustration and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the presence of an external magnetic field the magnetic structure transforms into a fan-like phase with a finite spin chirality that gives rise to an effective magnetic field on the order $\sim$1 T. The topological Hall and Nernst effect from this field are comparable or larger to tightly-wound skyrmion systems. Lastly, we show that the topological effects are strongly dependent on the Fermi surface topology, which has strong variations and even sign changes for similar magnetic textures.

Tunable Giant Anomalous Hall in a Kondo Lattice Ferromagnet UBiTe

Abstract:Kondo lattice systems are recognized for potentially hosting a variety of rich topological phases. Several pioneering studies have demonstrated significant anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effects in these systems, attributed to the Berry curvature of the hybridization bands. In this study, we investigate UBiTe, a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice system. Our findings reveal that the intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity is closely tied to the Kondo coherence temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that slight shifts in the Fermi level across three different samples significantly influence this intrinsic contribution, in alignment with the Berry curvature localized within the narrow hybridization bands. This provides a stark contrast to the less pronounced sensitivity observed in weakly correlated Weyl semimetals, underscoring the distinctive electronic properties of Kondo lattice systems. The anomalous Hall conductivity of one samples ranks among the highest reported for topological magnetic materials.

Abstract:The Wiedemann-Franz law and Mott relation are textbook paradigms on the ratios of the thermal and thermo-electric conductivities to electrical conductivity, respectively. Deviations from them usually reveal insights for intriguing phases of matter. The recent topological kagome magnets TbMn6Sn6 and Mn3Ge show confusingly opposite derivations in the Hall measurement. We calculate the topological and disorder corrections to the Wiedemann-Franz law and Mott relation for the Hall responses in topological kagome magnets and Dirac materials. The calculation indicates the dominance of the topological correction in the experiments. More importantly, we derive analytic correction formulas, which can universally capture the two opposite experiments with the chemical potential as the only parameter and will be a powerful guidance for future explorations on the magnetic topological matter and Dirac materials.

Abstract:AbstractThe interplay between topology and magnetism has recently sparked the frontier studies of magnetic topological materials that exhibit intriguing anomalous Hall and Nernst effects owning to the large intrinsic Berry curvature (BC). To better understand the anomalous quantum transport properties of these materials and their implications for future applications such as electronic and thermoelectric devices, it is crucial to discover more novel material platforms for performing anomalous transverse transport studies. Here, it is experimentally demonstrated that low‐cost Fe‐based Heusler compounds exhibit large anomalous Hall and Nernst effects. An anomalous Hall conductivity of 250–750 S cm−1 and Nernst thermopower of above 2 µV K−1 are observed near room temperature. The positive effect of anti‐site disorder on the anomalous Hall transport is revealed. Considering the very high Curie temperature (nearly 1000 K), larger Nernst thermopowers at high temperatures are expected owing to the existing magnetic order and the intrinsic BC. This work provides a background for developing low‐cost Fe‐based Heusler compounds as a new material platform for anomalous transport studies and applications, in particular, near and above room temperature.

Abstract:Intrinsic ferromagnetism is a crucial ingredient to realize quantum anomalous Hall effect in quasi two dimensional materials, thus the search of intrinsic ferromagnetic topological materials is one of the most concerned issues in the field of topological phases of matter. In this work, combining magnetotransport measurements, first principles calculations, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies, we find that in MnSb6Te10, the n = 2 member of the MnSb2Te4/(Sb2Te3)n family, the strong magnetic competition realizes a fragile ferromagnetic ground state, which whereas easily enters into ferrimagnetic and the Z_2 antiferromagnetic topological insulator phase with warming to higher temperature. Interestingly, the system stays in an inversion-symmetry-protected axion insulator phase in the ferromagnetic ground state as well as in the external magnetic field driven spin-polarized FM phase and can be converted into a Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes in the valence bands with hole doping, which are manifested by the measured notable intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. Our work thus provides an intrinsic magnetic topological material which is highly tunable into versatile topological phases by temperature, magnetic field, as well as carrier doping.
