Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) micro- and nanowires were synthesized through electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in the aqueous solutions of 1-pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), in which PSA acted as both surfactant and dopant. Macroscopic studies (SEM and TEM) indicated that the PPy wires have diameters of 120–500nm and length of several micrometers. Electrochemical investigation demonstrated that the PPy wires have much stronger electrochemical activity than the conventional flat PPy film because of their higher specific surface area. Furthermore, the PSA doped PPy wires showed strong emission in an aqueous dispersion. A possible micelle guided formation mechanism has been proposed and investigated.

Abstract:Polypyrrole microcontainers with morphology like bowls, cups, and bottles have been electrochemically generated by direct oxidation of pyrrole in the aqueous solution of P-naphthalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA). The well-ordered microcontainers stand upright on the working electrode surface in a density of 2000-8000 units cm(-2). Their morphological features can be simply controlled by electrochemical polymerization condition, and the results have a good reproducibility. The growth process of microcontainers was studied by scanning electron microscopy. A "soup bubble" growth mechanism was postulated and confirmed by electrolysis of water using a polypyrrole film-coated electrode. The walls of the microcontainers were made of polypyrrole in the oxidized (conductive) state according to the results of Raman and infrared spectroscopies. Electrochemical studies demonstrated that the PPy film with microcontainers had a large surface area which resulted in high film/electrolyte double-layer capacitive charges.

Abstract:Conducting polymer - polypyrrole (PPy) microstructures were fabricated in an aqueous solution of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) by electrochemical polymerization. The study implied the concentration of DBSA had great effect on the morphologies and conductivities of PPy microstructures. At lower DBSA concentration (0.2M), no obvious microstructures were generated. Increasing DBSA concentration, some novel "chayote-like", "flower-like" microstructures were obtained by modulating electrochemical conditions. The growth process of microstructures was studied by scanning electron microscopy and relevant mechanism was discussed. Raman characterizations indicated that the microstructures were made of conductive PPy doped by DBSA.

Abstract:Microstructures with hollow interiors, such as microspheres, microcrocks, microbowls, and micropumpkins, were prepared through the direct electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole in an aqueous solution of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA). Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the microstructures possessed hollow interiors. The addition of polymeric doping ions made the skins of the microstructures very smooth, and several novel structures were observed. The morphology of the microstructures was simply modulated through changes in the electrochemical conditions. Raman and Fourier transform infrared characterizations indicated that the microstructures were made of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) doped by polymeric anions of poly(styrene sulfonate), and X-ray diffraction showed that the microstructures were amorphous. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that PPy-PSSA composite films with microstructures had higher thermal stability than pure PPy, PPy-coated PSSA microspheres, and naphthalene sulfonic acid doped PPy microstructures. Furthermore, PPy-PSSA composite films with microstructures showed cation-exchange behavior during the redox process in aqueous solutions of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate. Abstract:Polypyrrole thin films with pores in nanometer scale were synthesized by direct electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole in a mixed electrolyte of isopropyl alcohol, boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, sodium dodecylsulfonate and poly(ethylene glycol) using well-aligned ZnO nanowires arrays as templates. The thin films exhibit high conductivity of ca. sigma(rt) similar to 20.5 s/cm and can be driven to bend during redox processes in 1.0 M lithium perchlorate aqueous solution. The movement rate of an actuator based on this nanoporous film was measured to be over 90 degrees/s at a driving potential of 0.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polypyrrole microcontainers with morphology like bowls and balls with diameters of only several micrometers were synthesized through an electrochemical polymerization route. In this process, the liquid organic monomer was dispersed in a neutral aqueous solution as microdroplets by sonication and then the droplets assembled onto the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode modified with six bilayers of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS). Polymerization of the outmost layers of the droplets resulted in the formation of well-ordered microcontainers on the working electrode surface in a number density of about 106unitscm−2.

Abstract:Wire-, ribbon-, and sphere-like nanostructures of polypyrrole have been synthesized by solution chemistry methods in the presence of various surfactants (anionic, cationic, or nonionic surfactant) with various oxidizing agents [ammonium persulfate (APS) or ferric chloride (FeCl3), respectively]. The surfactants and oxidizing agents used in this study have played a key role in tailoring the nanostructures of polypyrrole during the polymerization. It is inferred that the lamellar structures of a mesophase are formed by self-assembly between the cations of a long chain cationic surfactant [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or dodeyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] and anions of oxidizing agent APS. These layered mesostructures are presumed to act as templates for the formation of wire- and ribbon-like polypyrrole nanostructures. In contrast, if a short chain cationic surfactant octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonylphenyl ether (O pi-10) is used, sphere-like polypyrrole nanostructures are obtained, whichever of the oxidizing agents mentioned above is used. In this case, micelles resulting, from self-assembly among surfactant molecules are envisaged to serve as the templates while the polymerization happens. It is also noted that, if anionic surfactant sodium dodeyl surfate (SDS) is used, no characteristic nanostructures of polypyrrole were observed. This may be attributed to the doping effect of anionic surfactants into the resulting polypyrrole chains, and as a result, micelles self-assembled among surfactant molecules are broken down during the polymerization. The effects of monomer concentration, surfactant concentration, and surfactant chain length on the morphologies of the resulting polypyrrole have been investigated in detail. The molecular structures, composition, and electrical properties of the nanostructured polypyrrole have also been investigated in this study.

Abstract:Polypyrrole nanowires have been electrosynthesized by direct oxidation of 0.1 mol l(-1) pyrrole in a medium of 75% isopropyl alcohol + 20% boron trifluoride diethyl etherate + 5% poly (ethylene glycol) (by volume) using porous alumina membranes as the templates. The as-prepared nanowires had a smooth surface and uniform diameter and were arranged in an orderly manner in a high density. The conductivity of a single nanowire was measured by the four-electrode technique to be 23.4 S cm(-1) at room temperature. The field emission devices based on the nanowire array were fabricated and their operations were explored. The experimental results indicated that the field emission characteristics of the devices fitted well to the Fowler-Nordheim model of emission. The turn-on electric field was only 1.2 V mu m(-1) and the current density reached 200 mu A cm(-2) at 2.6 V mu m(-1).

Abstract:State-of-the-art polypyrrole nanofiber-based nanoarchitectonics can be generally fabricated by electrospinning, interfacial polymerization and reactive template methods. Even though analogous nanofiber morphologies and nanofibrous network architectures can be obtained by these methods, the structural details and structural complexities may alter significantly as different synthesis methods are applied. For the electrospinning technique, on one hand, nanofibers can be directly obtained by spinning polypyrrole containing dopes; on the other, the electrospun nanofiber mats can be used as templates to direct the nanofiber formation; a two-step fabrication process, including the electrospinning of polymer nanofiber mats and deposition of polypyrrole on the polymer nanofibers' surface, is generally employed. By tuning the electrospinning parameters, the composition, diameter, morphology, and alignment of the as-obtained electrospun nanofiber mat can be effectively controlled, which may allow the fabrication of polypyrrole nanofibers with sophisticated nanostructures and nanoarchitectures. Interfacial polymerization is capable of generating polypyrrole nanofibers without templates. It is speculated that the protonation and re-orientation of polypyrrole at the oil-water interface may decoil the polymer chains and transform them into more extended conformations, while the charged polymer chains are easier to diffuse into the water phase and form a stable dispersion. Different from electrospinning, the reactive templates may drive the formation of polypyrrole nanofibers through either redox or protonation mechanisms. Nanofibers with different curvatures, compositions, and architectures can be obtained by using different types of reactive template in a simple, fast, environmental-friendly and one-step manner. A wide-range of applications have been demonstrated by the polypyrrole nanofiber-based nanoarchitectonics, including cell culture, tissue engineering, neural stimulation, energy storage, and organic electronics.

Abstract:A new series of pyrroles bearing bile acid moieties were synthesized and electrochemically polymerized in acetonitrile with tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAFP6) as the supporting electrolyte. It is found that these functionalized monomers could form polypyrrole films, but their electrochemical properties and the stability of the films are strongly dependent on the length of the alkyl spacer between pyrrole ring and the pendant bile acid moiety. Each of the resulting polymers with different bile acid groups shows a distinctive behaviour in terms of its microstructure of surface, as well as electrochemical and optical properties. Compared to other analogous polypyrroles, the optical property of the cholic acid functionalized polymer is sensitive to the polarity of the used solvents, exhibiting solvatochromic behaviour. This phenomenon is probably derived from its unique facial amphiphilic structure.

Abstract:Conducting polypyrrole (PPy) with nanoscale hierarchical structure is chemically synthesized in an aqueous solution in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1,5-naphthalene disulfonic acid (1,5-NDA). The effect of synthetic conditions including concentration of CTAB and pyrrole, reaction temperature, oxidants and their introduced modes on the PPy hierarchical nanostructure is systematically investigated. A hypothesis for the hierarchical structure formation of PPy with the aid of CTAB/1,5-NDA/pyrrole supramolecular template is presented, in which the pyrrole is polymerized in imitation of the CTAB/1,5-NDA/pyrrole crystal shape. The electrochemical performances of representative PPy sample show that the PPy with hierarchical nanostructures has potential application as supercapacitor materials.

Abstract:One-dimensional conducting polymer nanostructure arrays could provide short ion transport paths, thus delivering superior chemical/physical performance and having large potential as intelligent switching materials. In this work, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy is employed to monitor the self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays in template-free electrochemical polymerization. The specific spreading behavior of pyrrole micelles on the conductive substrate is important to large-area self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays and the insight into self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays is discussed. Moreover, compared with unoriented nanostructured polypyrrole, the conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays possess enhanced electrical and electrochemical performances.

Abstract:A whelk-like helix of polypyrrole was synthesized by an electropolymerization process. Its structure and properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry. The high-resolution SEM images clearly show the whorls around the polypyrrole whelk body; these whorls have ordered periodic nanostructures on their surface. XPS analysis indicates that the polypyrrole structure is highly doped with sodium dodecyl sulfate, the chosen dopant. A novel spiral growth mechanism is proposed. The whelk-like polypyrrole layer shows high thermal stability, superhydrophilicity, and strong electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of ascorbic acid.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)-coated Ag nanoparticles and nanowires were fabricated through the redox reaction between pyrrole monomer and silver nitrate in the presence of chitosan. The morphologies, compositions, and electrochemical activities of PPy/Ag composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Cyclic voltammetry. The synthetic route employed here is simple and inexpensive and can be extended to prepare other conducting polymer/inorganic nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) with variable nanostructure such as nanotubes, nanorods and networks has been fabricated by employing an ion association of heparin–methylene blue as new morphology-directing agent. The ion association exhibited both advantages of hard and soft template in template-induced chemical polymerization of pyrrole. By altering the ration of ion association component, PPy could be easily switched in morphology between nanotubes and nanorods. With the coordination effect of ion association and oxidant Fe3+, PPy networks with high conductivity could also be obtained in static condition. The achieved nanostructured polypyrrole were all doped with heparin, a biochemical material, and had potential exploitation value in electrochemistry and biochemistry.
