Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed formal [4 + 1]-cycloaddition of pyridotriazoles and aryl propargyl alcohols is reported, providing an effective access to 2-pyridyl-substituted 2,5-dihydrofuran derivatives in moderate to high yields. Mechanistically, the proposed oxonium ylide intermediate in this catalytic alkyne carbocyclization transformation is verified by an interception experiment for the first time.

Abstract:Alkynyloxiranes have been employed for the first time as effective coupling partners in Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. Their annulation with N-aryloxyamides then offers a redox-neutral and efficient synthesis of functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans bearing an exocyclic E-allylic alcohol and a tetrasubstituted carbon center in good yields with a broad substrate scope. The products can be easily converted to molecules with more complexity, which provides an opportunity for rapid assembly of structurally diverse heterocycles.

Abstract:Synthetically important scaffolds, fused tricyclic frameworks containing a 2,3-cyclo[b]dihydrofuran unit, play a crucial role in drug discovery. In this study, we demonstrate that rhodium(II)/N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide can catalyze the in situ generation of highly reactive alkene intermediates from commonly accessible alkanes, which undergo intermolecular [3+2] tandem cyclization with the simultaneously generated beta-dicarbonyl radical to synthesize a series of fused tricyclic frameworks containing a 2,3-cyclo[b]dihydrofuran unit with a quaternary carbon center.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed chelation-assisted direct C-H bond functionalization of 1-(2-pyridyl)-2-pyridones with internal alkynes that can be controlled to give three different products in good yields has been realized. Depending on the reaction conditions, solvents and additives, the reaction pathway can be switched between alkenylation, alkenylation/directing group migration and rollover annulation. These reaction manifolds allow divergent access to a variety of valuable C6-alkenylated 1-(2-pyridyl)-2-pyridones, (Z)-6-(1,2-diaryl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)vinyl)pyridin-2(1H)-ones and 10H-pyrido[1,2-a][1,8]naphthyridin-10-ones from the same starting materials. These protocols exhibit excellent regio- and stereoselectivity, broad substrate scope, and good tolerance of functional groups. A combination of experimental and computational approaches have been employed to uncover the key mechanistic features of these reactions.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:Palladium and acid cooperative catalysis is presented as a strategy for the [3 + 2] cycloaddition of acceptor/donor-type diazo compounds with terminal alkynes. The [3 + 2] cycloaddition of α-aryl-α-diazoacetates with terminal alkynes proceeded smoothly to produce 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans with high yields. This synthesis method provided a direct and efficient pathway to prepare furan ring-containing organosilane and organoboron reagents.
