Abstract:The monodisperse ZnS nanospheres were synthesized by a solvothermal method. The nanospheres were characterized using XRD, TEM, UV-vis, and photoluminescence spectra. The results demonstrate that ZnS nanospheres are highly crystalline. The strong photoluminescence emission at 450 nm (blue) can be observed in the ZnS nanospheres.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse CdS semiconductor nanocrystals have been successfully fabricated by a simple solvothermal route using cheap and low-cost normal inorganic compounds as precursors. The reaction temperature is demonstrated to be critical for the fabrication of the monodisperse nanocrystals. The nanocrystals were characterized by XRD, TEM, UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Without involving special conditions, this method can be expected to make considerable contribution to the fabrication of various nanocrystals and nanocrystals-related research.

Abstract:Solvothermal method can improve the structural defects and chemical defects of crystal growth by adjusting the factors that affect the crystal growth rate, so as to achieve the purpose of adjusting the crystal morphology, size, pore size, and degree of functionalization. Moreover, solvothermal methods are suitable for the cost-efficient synthesis of micro/nano carbons (M/NCs), such as carbon spheres, carbon dots, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanosheets, and porous carbons, due to the advantages of low reaction temperature, environmental friendliness, and high yields. In this review, we first provide a brief history and process of solvothermal synthesis. Further, we summarize the solvothermal methods for M/NCs preparation by using various precursors (organic molecules, biomass), at different reaction temperatures, times, and solvents (water and organic solvents). The potential applications of M/NCs in energy, biomedicine, environment, solid state light emission, and photocatalysis are also explained. Finally, solvothermal synthesis M/NCs and M/NCs composite materials are prospected.

Abstract:Noble metal nanocrystals with controlled morphologies play important role in many fields, such as catalysis and SERS, etc. To date, solution-based methods developed to synthesize nanocrystals mainly exploit organic reagents as solvents including polyol, oleic acid/oleylamine, toluene, diphenyl ether and so on. In organic solvent systems, expensive organometallic precursors and toxic organic solvents are often used, bringing about substantial environmental issues. In this article, based on our recent endeavors, we will summarize facile, general aqueous methods to synthesize monodisperse, uniform, single and binary noble metal nanostructures and their applications in liquid fuel cells. We believe this review article will be useful to those devoted to the catalysis and nanocrystal fields.

Abstract:This Account focuses on the recent development of interface-mediated growth of monodispersed nanostructures in our laboratory. By rationally tuning the chemical reactions at various gasliquid, solidsolid, liquidliquid, and liquidsolidsolution interfaces, we could readily synthesize nanostructures such as hollow microspheres, coreshell nanoparticles, and monodispersed nanocrystals. These advances in interface-mediated synthesis could lead to progress in the development of nanocrystal crystallography and encourage some more unique and exciting research and applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:CdS nanoparticles with various shapes were directly synthesized in several solvents by adopting a solvothermal route at 160 degrees C for 12hours respectively, using distilled water(H2O), N,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF), ethanolamine(an) and ethylenediamine(en) as the solvent and the shape-controlled reactant. The structure and morphology of the products are characterized, and the effect of the solvents on the structure, shape and size has been discussed, considering the physical and structural properties of the solvents. The optical properties of the products synthesized in an and en were revealed by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The above results contribute to the synthesis of CdS and other semiconductor nanoparticles with tuned and controllable shape and size.

Abstract:Large-scale CdS nanowires with uniform diameter and high aspect ratios were synthesized using a simple solvothermal route that employed CdCl2 and S powder as starting materials, ethylenediamine (en) as the solvent. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the products are hexagonal structure CdS nanowires with diameter of 40nm and length up to 10μm. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) studies indicate the single-crystalline nature of CdS nanowires with an oriented growth along the c-axis direction. The optical properties of the products were characterized by optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. Based on the results of contrastive experiments, it is found that the sulfur source and the solvent play significant roles in the formation of uniform nanowires. A possible formation mechanism of nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal route has been developed to synthesize highly dispersed nanocrystalline barium titanate (BaTiO3), using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The as-synthesized BaTiO3 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Based on the results of characterizations, the organic solvent was found to influence strongly the crystal growth and dispersibility of BaTiO3. The BaTiO3 nanoparticles obtained were highly dispersed and crystalline with a cubic perovskite structure. The particle size derived from the TEM ranged from 5 to 20 nm.

Abstract:Size-controllable monodisperse PbSe and PbSe/PbS nanocrystals (NCs) have been successfully synthesized with a solvothermal method. Octadecylamine (ODA) molecules were found effective in organizing the nanocrystals to form an ordered monolayer. It is expected that these narrow-band-gap semiconductor NCs with tunable size would have potential applications in near- and mid-IR telecommunication laser sources, electroluminescence, and solar cell materials.

Abstract:Due to excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability and catalytic characteristics, zirconia is considered as the most important ceramic materials. Different crystal forms make zirconia play a huge role in solid electrolyte fuel cells, catalysts, thermal barrier coatings, denture materials, mobile phone backplanes, etc. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review about solvothermal synthesis of nano-zirconia. Firstly, the reactors and systems of solvothermal synthesis in recent years are introduced. Especially, the advancement of continuously flowing microreactors and field-coupled systems are analyzed. Secondly, influencing factors of zirconia solvothermal synthesis are discussed. In addition, solvent effects on the synthesis of nano-zirconia products are clarified, and suggestions for solvent selection are given. Furthermore, the design and mechanism of solvothermal synthesis of zero-, one-, two-and three-dimensional zirconia nanostructures are revealed. Simultaneously, experimental methods and kinetic studies are summarized. Finally, potential applications and challenges are presented for future research directions.

Abstract:The growth and breadth of nanoparticle (NP) research now encompasses many scientific and technologic fields, which has driven the want to control NP dimensions, structures and properties. Recent advances in NP synthesis, especially in solution phase synthesis, and characterization have made it possible to tune NP sizes and shapes to optimize NP properties for various applications. In this review, we summarize the general concepts of using solution phase chemistry to control NP nucleation and growth for the formation of monodisperse NPs with polyhedral, cubic, octahedral, rod, or wire shapes and complex multicomponent heterostructures. Using some representative examples, we demonstrate how to use these monodisperse NPs to tune and optimize NP catalysis of some important energy conversion reactions, such as the oxygen reduction reaction, electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction, and cascade dehydrogenation/hydrogenation for the formation of functional organic compounds under greener chemical reaction conditions. Monodisperse NPs with controlled surface chemistry, morphologies and magnetic properties also show great potential for use in biomedicine. We highlight how monodisperse iron oxide NPs are made biocompatible and target-specific for biomedical imaging, sensing and therapeutic applications. We intend to provide readers some concrete evidence that monodisperse NPs have been established to serve as successful model systems for understanding structure-property relationships at the nanoscale and further to show great potential for advanced nanotechnological applications.

Abstract:Synthesis of high quality semiconductor nanocrystals is discussed in this chapter. Although the focus is on the recent progress in synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals in non-aqueous solution, there is some review of the historical development of the aqueous and other approaches. Mechanisms for controlling the shape, size, and optical properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are described in detail, although for the most part this topic can only be treated on a qualitative level. Finally, one area of study, the formation of nanocrystals, is discussed in terms of its practical and fundamental significance.

Abstract:Monodisperse iron oxide micro-, nanospindles and nanospheres with controlled sizes were synthesized through a facile solvothermal process. The products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The growth mechanism of spindle-like or spherical iron oxides with controlled size is discussed. Different content of Cl- in the reaction medium can also influence the nucleation rate through the decomposition of Fe8O8(OH)(8)Cl-1.35 and thus control the particle sizes. The as-prepared iron oxides exhibit size dependence in their physical properties such as UV-vis absorption spectra and IR spectra. In addition, the removal capacities of Cr(VI) of the as-prepared iron oxides are investigated. The better performances of the as-prepared iron oxides than commercial iron oxides could be attributed to the larger surface area and rough surface structure.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4nanospheres with uniform particle size distribution were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method, without adding any surfactants and structure directing agents. The morphology, structure and phase composition of the nanospheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption stripping curves and pore size distribution curves. The measurements revealed that the Fe3O4nanospheres were assembled by 5-10 nm nanocrystallines; with porous structure, their specific surface area reached 41 m2/g. In addition, the formation mechanism of the nanospheres was elaborately analyzed by adjusting the solvothermal reaction temperature and time. It's confirmed that this preparation method has a strong universality. ZnO and CuO nano- and microspheres have been synthesized with the same or similar experimental parameters. These nano-and microspheres will have a more significant application prospect in the energy- and environment-related fields for the use of li-ion battery anode, supercapacitor, catalysis, etc.

Abstract:Formulation of nanocrystals is a distinctive approach which can effectively improve the delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs, thus enticing the development of the nanocrystals technology. The characteristics of nanocrystals resulted in an exceptional drug delivery conductance, including saturation solubility, dissolution velocity, adhesiveness, and affinity. Nanocrystals were treated as versatile pharmaceuticals that could be delivered through almost all routes of administration. In the current review, oral, pulmonary, and intravenous routes of administration were presented. Also, the targeting of drug nanocrystals, as well as issues of efficacy and safety, were also discussed. Several methods were applied for nanocrystals production including top-down production strategy (media milling, high-pressure homogenization), bottom-up production strategy (antisolvent precipitation, supercritical fluid process, and precipitation by removal of solvent), and the combination approaches. Moreover, this review also described the evaluation and characterization of the drug nanocrystals and summarized the current commercial pharmaceutical products utilizing nanocrystals technology.

Abstract:Nanocrystals are emerging as key materials due to their novel shape- and size-dependent chemical and physical properties that differ drastically from their bulk counterparts. The main challenges in this field remain rationally controlled synthesis and large scale production. This article reviews recent progress in our laboratory related to solution-based synthesis of various nanostructures, including zero-dimensional (0-D) nanocrystals, 1-D nanowires and nanorods, hollow structures, and superlattice materials. On the other hand, the essential goal for nanoresearchers is to achieve industrial applications of nanostructured materials. In the past decades, these fascinating materials have been widely used in many promising fields such as nanofabrication, nanodevices, nanobiology, and nanocatalysis. Herein, we focus on their applications as nanocatalysts and try to illustrate the main problems and future directions in this area based on our recent endeavors in catalytic applications of nanocrystals.
