Abstract:New strategies for materials fabrication are of fundamental importance in the advancement of science and technology 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Organometallic 13 , 14 and other organic solution phase 15 , 16 , 17 synthetic routes have enabled the synthesis of functional inorganic quantum dots or nanocrystals. These nanomaterials form the building blocks for new bottom-up approaches to materials assembly for a range of uses; such materials also receive attention because of their intrinsic size-dependent properties and resulting applications 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 . Here we report a unified approach to the synthesis of a large variety of nanocrystals with different chemistries and properties and with low dispersity; these include noble metal, magnetic/dielectric, semiconducting, rare-earth fluorescent, biomedical, organic optoelectronic semiconducting and conducting polymer nanoparticles. This strategy is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid and solution phases present during the synthesis. We believe our methodology provides a simple and convenient route to a variety of building blocks for assembling materials with novel structure and function in nanotechnology 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 .

Abstract:At the forefront of nanochemistry, there exists a research endeavor centered around intermetallic nanocrystals, which are unique in terms of long-range atomic ordering, well-defined stoichiometry, and controlled crystal structure. In contrast to alloy nanocrystals with no elemental ordering, it is challenging to synthesize intermetallic nanocrystals with a tight control over their size and shape. Here, recent progress in the synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals with controllable sizes and well-defined shapes is highlighted. A simple analysis and some insights key to the selection of experimental conditions for generating intermetallic nanocrystals are presented, followed by examples to highlight the viable use of intermetallic nanocrystals as electrocatalysts or catalysts for various reactions, with a focus on the enhanced performance relative to their alloy counterparts that lack elemental ordering. Within the conclusion, perspectives on future developments in the context of synthetic control, structure-property relationships, and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Nanocrystals are emerging as key materials due to their novel shape- and size-dependent chemical and physical properties that differ drastically from their bulk counterparts. The main challenges in this field remain rationally controlled synthesis and large scale production. This article reviews recent progress in our laboratory related to solution-based synthesis of various nanostructures, including zero-dimensional (0-D) nanocrystals, 1-D nanowires and nanorods, hollow structures, and superlattice materials. On the other hand, the essential goal for nanoresearchers is to achieve industrial applications of nanostructured materials. In the past decades, these fascinating materials have been widely used in many promising fields such as nanofabrication, nanodevices, nanobiology, and nanocatalysis. Herein, we focus on their applications as nanocatalysts and try to illustrate the main problems and future directions in this area based on our recent endeavors in catalytic applications of nanocrystals.

Abstract:This Account focuses on the recent development of interface-mediated growth of monodispersed nanostructures in our laboratory. By rationally tuning the chemical reactions at various gasliquid, solidsolid, liquidliquid, and liquidsolidsolution interfaces, we could readily synthesize nanostructures such as hollow microspheres, coreshell nanoparticles, and monodispersed nanocrystals. These advances in interface-mediated synthesis could lead to progress in the development of nanocrystal crystallography and encourage some more unique and exciting research and applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Solution-based routes have been widely applied in the synthesis of nanostructures. It is desirable to choose or design precursors, ligands, and solvent molecules at the molecular level to allow the synthesis of low-dimensional nanocrystals with various shapes and sizes. The increasing requirements for the integration of the properties of nanocrystals have produced a high demand for the rational design and fine control of complex structures, in terms of both the composition and the structure. To meet this demand, researchers have developed new synthetic strategies to produce more complex and more functional nanocrystals. Typical procedures involve systematic engineering, which focuses on the whole synthetic procedure, instead of just the molecular details. This review focuses mainly on the work of Yadong Li's group over the last decade.

Abstract:Ultrathin nanostructures have attracted much attention in recent years due to their predictable novel properties and various potential applications. The improvement in synthetic skills has led to many successful syntheses of nanostructures including zero-dimensional (0D) nanoclusters, one-dimensional (1D) nanowires, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets and other higher-level complex nanostructures, where cluster-assembly of primary nanocrystals is a common process. In this review, progress in ultrathin nanocrystals in the last decade and several important factors in the growth mechanisms are covered. By giving examples of cluster assembly from 1D to 3D nanostructures, the utility of cluster assembly in the synthesis of new materials has been demonstrated.

Abstract:In the past decades, controlled assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) has been a topic of continuous interest. The tremendous interest in organizing NCs mainly stemmed from the potential applications of NCs in diverse areas, including chemical and biological sensing, energy storage and production, and optoelectronic devices. Recent advances at this frontier are also partially driven by the rapid development in the synthesis of relatively monodispersed NC building blocks with controlled size, shape, and composition [1, 2]. Compared to spherical NCs, one dimensional (1D) NCs, that is, nanorods (NRs) and nanowires (NWs), exhibit unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties due to their shape anisotropy [3, 4]. Taking Au NRs as an example, they exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and strong photothermal effect, which enable their broad applications in such areas as cancer imaging and therapy. The LSPR absorption of these NRs can be tailored in the range from visible to near-infrared wavelengths for specific applications by controlling the aspect ratio of NRs. To date, various methods have been developed for the organization of 1D NCs into functional structures. In particular, the bottom-up assembly approach offers a more robust, scalable, and cost-effective way to fabricate arrays of NCs in a controlled manner, compared to top-down techniques such as electron-beam and focused-ion beam lithography [5]. In this chapter, we have classified the current self-assembly methods into four major categories, namely templated assembly, field-driven assembly, assembly at interfaces, and ligand-guided assembly. The following section features the properties and applications of assemblies of 1D NCs. Finally, conclusion and outlook are presented in the last section.

Abstract:Noble metal nanocrystals with controlled morphologies play important role in many fields, such as catalysis and SERS, etc. To date, solution-based methods developed to synthesize nanocrystals mainly exploit organic reagents as solvents including polyol, oleic acid/oleylamine, toluene, diphenyl ether and so on. In organic solvent systems, expensive organometallic precursors and toxic organic solvents are often used, bringing about substantial environmental issues. In this article, based on our recent endeavors, we will summarize facile, general aqueous methods to synthesize monodisperse, uniform, single and binary noble metal nanostructures and their applications in liquid fuel cells. We believe this review article will be useful to those devoted to the catalysis and nanocrystal fields.
Controlled synthesis and self-assembly of highly monodisperse Ag and Ag2S nanocrystals

Abstract:A facile method to control the synthesis and self-assembly of mondisperse Ag and Ag2S nanocrystals with a narrow-size distribution is described. Uniform Ag nanoparticles of less than 4 nm were obtained by thermolysis of Ag oleate complexes in the presence of oleic acid and dodecylamine, and monodisperse Ag nanoparticles of less than 10 nm were also prepared in one step by using dodecylamine and oleic acid as capping agents. Moreover, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of the Ag substrates have also been investigated. It is worth mentioning that these Ag nanoparticles and assemblies show great differences in the SERS activities of Rhodamine B dye. In addition, the superlattices of Ag2S nanocrystals were synthesized with Ag oleate complexes, alkanethiol, and sulfur as the reactants. The resulting highly monodisperse nanocrystals can easily self-assemble into interesting superstructures in the solution phase without any additional assembly steps. This method may be extended to the size-controlled preparation and assembly of many other noble-metal and transition-metal chalcogenide nanoparticles. These results will aid the study of the physicochemical properties of the superlattice assemblies and construction of functional macroscopic architectures or devices.

Abstract:The microstructure (composition, size and shape etc.) of semiconductor nanocrystals determine the electronic density of states of semiconductor nanomaterials and ultimately determine their optical and electrical properties. Semiconductor nanocrystal advanced structures, such as hybrid nanostructures and nanocrystal superlattices, not only integrate the function of individual nanocrystals, but also brings the materials collective and synchronic properties. How to control the monodispersity, composition and structure of as-prepared semiconductor nanocrystals during their syntheses, as well as their furthermore assembly, has been a hot research area in this decade. This critical review focuses on the development of synthetic and assembly methods (techniques) of semiconductor nanocrystals processed in the liquid phase. Emphasis is on the synthesis methodology, microstructure related properties of semiconductor nanocrystals, and their applications (243 references).

Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals are mesoscopic materials occupying the region between the atomistic and the macroscopic worlds.1 The physical properties of these tiny crystals manifest the transition from molecular limit to the solid state providing benchmark systems for experimental and theoretical studies.1 In recent years, there have been tremendous developments in the synthetic control of nanocrystal size, shape, and composition, thus allowing the tailoring of their properties.2-5 These properties, alongside with the ability to manipulate them using the powerful scaffolds of chemical syntheses, also leads to potential applications of colloidal nanocrystals in diverse fields involving physics and biology.6-11 A tremendous amount of research in recent years has been directed towards the design and synthesis of multicomponent nanostructures.5-13 These nanostructures combine two or more components into one solid structure without the use of organic linking molecules, therefore each component is in direct contact with another through one or more of its crystal facets.14 Such complex structures have the potential to combine magnetic, plasmonic, semiconducting15 and other physical or chemical properties into a single nanomaterial.9, 16-17 Efforts to create these multicomponent nanostructures have largely been driven by their increased functionality.18-19 This increase in function combined with the potential for enhanced, and often tunable, chemical and physical properties makes these nanostructures useful in applications otherwise inaccessible by their single component counterparts.20 For example, such nanostructures have already found applications in areas such as multimodal biomedical imaging/sensing21 and photocatalysis.22-23 To date, a variety of multicomponent nanostructures have already been successfully synthesized and can be sorted into two groups: i) Centrosymmetric structures that are symmetric about a center point, i.e. core-shell nanostructures, which most often combine two or more semiconducting materials in order to enhance their photoluminescence;24 and ii) Non-centrosymmetric structures that are asymmetric relative to a center point, i.e. hybrid nanostructures.11, 25-27 In recent years, many research groups have successfully synthesized various multicomponent nanomaterials including semiconductor-semiconductor,28-29 metalmetal,30-32 semiconductor-metal,33-39 and insulator/metal systems26,40-42 with either a

Abstract:One-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures of materials have received great research attention because of their unique photochemistry, photophysical, and electron-transport properties different from those of bulky or nanoparticle materials. One of the main challenges in this field is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures of materials in nanoscale. This review summarizes the recent progress in the solution-based routes to prepare 1-D nanostructures, highlighting the contribution from this laboratory. Crystal structure as one of the inherent factors that may determine the growth behavior of the nanocrystals is emphasized in this paper. Particularly compounds with layered structures or anistropic crystal structures are given special attention in the controlled growth of 1-D nanostructures. This review aims to present a relatively general understanding of the correlation between the crystal structure and growth behavior of materials under solution-based conditions and show how to choose appropriate conditions for the growth of 1-D nanostructures.

Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals are solution-grown, nanometre-sized, inorganic particles that are stabilized by a layer of surfactants attached to their surface. The inorganic cores possess useful properties that are controlled by their composition, size and shape, and the surfactant coating ensures that these structures are easy to fabricate and process further into more complex structures. This combination of features makes colloidal nanocrystals attractive and promising building blocks for advanced materials and devices. Chemists are achieving ever more exquisite control over the composition, size, shape, crystal structure and surface properties of nanocrystals, thus setting the stage for fully exploiting the potential of these remarkable materials.

Abstract:Synthesis of high quality semiconductor nanocrystals is discussed in this chapter. Although the focus is on the recent progress in synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals in non-aqueous solution, there is some review of the historical development of the aqueous and other approaches. Mechanisms for controlling the shape, size, and optical properties of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are described in detail, although for the most part this topic can only be treated on a qualitative level. Finally, one area of study, the formation of nanocrystals, is discussed in terms of its practical and fundamental significance.

Abstract:We report the general synthesis of monodisperse metal oxide nanoparticle clusters (MONPCs) via a ligand and polymer co-mediated hydrolysis method. This method combines the nanoparticle synthesis and assembly into one step, which simplifies the synthesis steps and promotes synthetic efficiency. This approach enables us to precisely engineer the compositions, sizes, and core-shell structures of the MONPCs, which provides a versatile platform for designing and producing MONPCs for applications in the fields of optoelectronics and electrocatalysis.

Abstract:This article gives an overview of recent progress in the self-assembly of nanocrystals. Classic self-assembly of nanocrystals, so-called colloidal crystallization driven by van der Waals interactions, is highlighted first with an emphasis on the recent realization of binary colloidal crystals. Next, new developments in the integration of nanocrystals into clusters based on electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole interactions are summarized, shedding light on the defined control of the interactions between the nanocrystals. Finally, the fabrication of heterogenous nanocrystals, obtained via either phase selective modification at the water/oil interface or facet-selective crystal growth on non-spherical nanocrystals is discussed. These last materials may provide significant building blocks for mimicking molecular self-assembly.

Abstract:The growth and breadth of nanoparticle (NP) research now encompasses many scientific and technologic fields, which has driven the want to control NP dimensions, structures and properties. Recent advances in NP synthesis, especially in solution phase synthesis, and characterization have made it possible to tune NP sizes and shapes to optimize NP properties for various applications. In this review, we summarize the general concepts of using solution phase chemistry to control NP nucleation and growth for the formation of monodisperse NPs with polyhedral, cubic, octahedral, rod, or wire shapes and complex multicomponent heterostructures. Using some representative examples, we demonstrate how to use these monodisperse NPs to tune and optimize NP catalysis of some important energy conversion reactions, such as the oxygen reduction reaction, electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction, and cascade dehydrogenation/hydrogenation for the formation of functional organic compounds under greener chemical reaction conditions. Monodisperse NPs with controlled surface chemistry, morphologies and magnetic properties also show great potential for use in biomedicine. We highlight how monodisperse iron oxide NPs are made biocompatible and target-specific for biomedical imaging, sensing and therapeutic applications. We intend to provide readers some concrete evidence that monodisperse NPs have been established to serve as successful model systems for understanding structure-property relationships at the nanoscale and further to show great potential for advanced nanotechnological applications.
