Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocrystals with excellent biocompatibility and bioresorbability are usually used in the fields of tissue engineering, medicine, etc. In this review, recent advances in the tunable synthesis, ion doping, assembly and applications of monodisperse HAp nanocrystals are summarized, which may be helpful for the designed synthesis and surface modification of HAp or other nanocrystals according to practical applications.

Abstract:The spherical hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (nHAP) were synthesized by using surfactant hexadecyl (cetyl)trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB) as surface modifier and stabilizer. The physical-chemical properties of nHAP were charactered using TEM/SAED, XRD, and contact angle measurements. The different effects on growth and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) between the nHAP particles and the conventional HAP crystallites (cHAP) were studied. The results showed that the nHAP particles were more uniformed in shape and size and therefore, its thin films presented smoother and better-formed surface. BMSCs seeded on nHAP thin films showed enhanced attachment and proliferation, increased osteogenic marker expression such as alkaline phosphates (ALP) and osteocalcin (OC) compared with those on the cHAP thin films.

Abstract:This paper reports a biomolecule-assisted hydrothermal method to synthesize hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanocrystals. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The data showed that the growth process of the HAP nanocrystals was composed of nucleation and growth processes. HAP nanocrystals can inhibit the proliferation of human HeLa cells in dose- and time-dependent manners, suggesting the promising potential of HAP nanocrystals in cancer therapy. Also, HAP nanocrystals own excellent mechanical properties, suggesting promising applications in dental restoration. This approach opens up vast opportunities for the synthesis and potential applications of nanostructures in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatites (HAps) with nano-sized structures are promising materials in various biomedical areas, but the synthesis of high quality particles is still challenged by the insufficient precision of size and morphology, as well as the presence of severe agglomeration. An inadequate knowledge of the early nucleation, growth and transformation might limit our exploration and application of HAp. Here, we report a novel oil/water microemulsion-hydrothermal hybrid strategy for the preparation of highly dispersive HAps with tailored morphologies and controlled size. Through the synergetic effect of the oleic acid and microemulsion system, a well-dispersed HAp nucleus was first generated at 2 h. By tuning the ensuing hydrothermal conditions from room temperature to 140 °C, the nucleus would grow from spherical to needle-like nanoparticles. The size of the particles could be regulated by the alteration of the hydrothermal temperature. In addition, we experimentally demonstrated the complete evolution of HAp growth and transformation at a critical temperature of 90 °C by quenching the reaction at various intervals. The obtained particles were explored as potential cellular delivery carriers and polymer fillers.

Abstract:Recently, one- and two- dimensional (1- and 2- D) hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocrystals gained remarkable attention for their potential multifold performance in diverse areas such as, bone tissue engineering, drug delivery, water purification, dental applications, catalysis, biocoatings, fire-resistant HA textile, security printing, anticounterfeiting paper, fire alarm wall paper, HA macro ribbon fiber, Li-S battery, and hemostatic aerogel, etc. The present article critically and comprehensively reviews various synthesis routes for the development of different morphologies of HA nanocrystals such as nanorods, nanoplates, nanowires, nanofibers, nanotubes, nanoneedles, nanowishkers, nanobelts, nanoribbons and nanosheets, with a focus to understand the process science. Moreover, the role of various experimental parameters such as hydrothermal temperature and time, nature and concentration of organic additives, pH of precursor solution, and elemental doping on size, morphology, aspect ratio, crystallinity and state of agglomeration of HA nanocrystals are thoroughly discussed. Further, the systematic discussion has also been made on each type of application of HA nanocrystals, with special emphasis on several essential physical and experimental parameters to achieve the performance of HA nanocrystals for bone tissue engineering, drug delivery, water purification etc. Overall, this study critically analyzed various synthesis routes to develop 1- and 2- D HA nanocrystals and their multifaceted applications.

Abstract:Uniform F-substituted HAp nanotubes with different aspect ratios and surface properties have been successfully prepared via a hydrothermal synthetic route. A small amount of 3% F doping into HAp can lead to the formation of nanotubes. This study will provide not only novel building blocks for the construction of artificial bones or other composites with novel mechanical properties but also a new strategy for the controlled growth of inorganic nanotubes.
Aqueous Preparation of Highly Dispersed Hydroxyapatite Nanorods for Colloidal Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HA) nanorods were synthesized using a citrate-assisted hydrothermal method. NaH2PO4, Na2HPO4, and Na3PO4 were used as the phosphate sources and the influences of pH value were investigated. The XRD results show that pure hexagonal HA can be synthesized using Na3PO4·12H2O as the phosphate source with the citrate solution pH ranging from 5.0 to 7.6. The zeta potential evaluation demonstrates that as-synthesized HA nanorods are colloidally stable and the aqueous dispersion can be maintained homogenous without any sediment or creaming for more than at least a month. The Ca/P molar ratio of the HA nanorods is about 1.60, indicating that the HA nanorods are calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite. Besides, owing to the excellent colloidal stability and rod-like morphology with a high aspect ratio (>6), the HA aqueous dispersion undergoes a phase transition from an isotropic state to a liquid crystalline state upon increasing the particle concentration to 17wt%. The completely liquid crystalline phase forms when the particle concentration reaches above 30wt%.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is observed as a mineral deposition on bones and in teeth enamel and hence serves as an ideal model or as a component for orthopaedic and dental implants. Synthetic HAp has been synthesized on a lab scale for several decades to mimic the naturally occurring HAp based on its chemical and crystallographic nature. There are several methods for synthesis of HAp available in the literature, amongst which the following are a few examples: dry methods which include the solid-state method and mechano-chemical method, wet methods which include chemical precipitation and sol–gel method, and methods which use high-temperature such as combustion method and pyrolysis method. However, more economical and better yield-giving methods produce HAp with controlled morphology for its potential use in biomedical applications. One such method that exploits Schiff base ligands to form chelating complexes with calcium and phosphate precursors and protect generated HAp nuclei is recent ongoing research for the preparation of HAp. This review presents the synthesis of HAp using a wide array of methods, with the recent HAp using novel methods compared to the traditional synthesis of HAp.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the size effect of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on proliferation and apoptosis of osteoblast-like cells.Methods Cetyltrimethylammnonium bromide (CTAB) was used to regulate the size of nano hydroxyapatite (nHAP) particles.All obtained particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM),X-ray diffraction,dynamic light scattering and chemical analysis.HAP films were obtained by slowly coating cover glasses with 1％ HAP particle suspension.MG-63 cells on three different films (20HAP,40HAP and 80HAP) were cocultured for up to 5 days.Cell proliferation assay was obtained by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT).Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometric detection.Cell ultrastructure morphology was observed by TEM observation.Results nHAP with diameter of 20 nm,40 nm and 80 nm were synthesized and and analyzed.The MG-63 cells were cultured on three different fihns.The optical density value of cells on 20HAP was 1.22±0.13 after 5 days incubation,and there was no different compared to the control group (F=6.843,P=0.124).Cell number and viability were significantly higher on 20HAP compared to large nHAP after 5 days incubation.The percentage of apoptotic cells increased with increasiug nHAP particle size.TEM images showed 20HAP was found in cytoplasm and cell morphology had no changes.Conclusion Both cell proliferation and cell apoptosis are related to the size of the nHAP particles.20HAP was the most effective on promoting cell growth and inhibiting cell apoptosis.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been the gold standard in the biomedical field due to its composition and similarity to human bone. Properties such as shape, size, morphology, and ionic substitution can be tailored through the use of different synthesis techniques and compounds. Regardless of the ability to determine its physicochemical properties, a conclusion for the correlation with the biological response it is yet to be found. Hence, a special focus on the most desirable properties for an appropriate biological response needs to be addressed. This review provides an overview of the fundamental properties of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and the characterization of physicochemical properties involved in their biological response and role as a drug delivery system. A summary of the main chemical properties and applications of hydroxyapatite, the advantages of using nanoparticles, and the influence of shape, size, functional group, morphology, and crystalline phase in the biological response is presented. A special emphasis was placed on the analysis of chemical and physical interactions of the nanoparticles and the cargo, which was explained through the use of spectroscopic and physical techniques such as FTIR, Raman, XRD, SEM, DLS, and BET. We discuss the properties tailored for hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for a specific biomolecule based on the compilation of studies performed on proteins, peptides, drugs, and genetic material.

Surface functionalization of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Abstract:This review completely covers the various aspects of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles and their role in different biological situations, and provides the surface and interface contents on (i) hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and their hybridization with organic molecules, (ii) surface designing of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles to provide their biocompatibility and photofunction, and (iii) coating technology of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. In particular, we summarized how the HAp nanoparticles interact with the different ions and molecules and highlighted the potential for hybridization between HAp nanoparticles and organic molecules, which is driven by the interactions of the HAp nanoparticle surface ions with several functional groups of biological molecules. In addition, we highlighted the studies focusing on the interfacial interactions between the HAp nanoparticles and proteins for exploring the enhanced biocompatibility. Such studies focus on how these interactions affect the hydration layers and protein adsorption. However, the hydration layer state involves diverse molecular interactions that can alter the shape of the adsorbed proteins, thereby affecting cell adhesion and spreading on the surfaces. We also summarized the relationship between the surface properties of the HAp nanoparticles and the hydration layer. Furthermore, we spotlighted the cytocompatible photoluminescent probes that can be developed by designing HAp/organic nanohybrid structures. We then emphasized the importance of photofunctionalization in theranostics, which involves the integration of diagnostics and therapy based on the surface design of the HAp nanoparticles. Furthermore, the coating techniques using HAp nanoparticles and HAp nanoparticle/polymer composites were outlined for fusing base biomaterials with biological tissues. The advantages of HAp/biocompatible polymer composite coatings include the ability to effectively cover porous or irregularly shaped surfaces while controlling the thickness of the coating layer, and the addition of HAp nanoparticles to the polymer matrix improves the mechanical properties, increases the roughness, and forms the morphologies that mimic bone nanostructures. Therefore, the fundamental design of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and their surfaces was suggested from various aspects for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp), a well-known biomaterial, has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the years, transforming from a simple biocompatible substance to an advanced functional material with a wide range of applications. This abstract provides an overview of the significant advancements in the field of HAp and its journey towards becoming a multifunctional material. Initially recognized for its exceptional biocompatibility and bioactivity, HAp gained prominence in the field of bone tissue engineering and dental applications. Its ability to integrate with surrounding tissues, promote cellular adhesion, and facilitate osseointegration made it an ideal candidate for various biomedical implants and coatings. As the understanding of HAp grew, researchers explored its potential beyond traditional biomaterial applications. With advances in material synthesis and engineering, HAp began to exhibit unique properties that extended its utility to other disciplines. Researchers successfully tailored the composition, morphology, and surface characteristics of HAp, leading to enhanced mechanical strength, controlled drug release capabilities, and improved biodegradability. These modifications enabled the utilization of HAp in drug delivery systems, biosensors, tissue engineering scaffolds, and regenerative medicine applications. Moreover, the exceptional biomineralization properties of HAp allowed for the incorporation of functional ions and molecules during synthesis, leading to the development of bioactive coatings and composites with specific therapeutic functionalities. These functionalized HAp materials have demonstrated promising results in antimicrobial coatings, controlled release systems for growth factors and therapeutic agents, and even as catalysts in chemical reactions. In recent years, HAp nanoparticles and nanostructured materials have emerged as a focal point of research due to their unique physicochemical properties and potential for targeted drug delivery, imaging, and theranostic applications. Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is comparable to materials in bone because its chemical components are similar to those contained in animal bone, and thus, its bioactive and biocompatible properties are similar. There are applications for HAp and relevant calcium phosphate in the medical and industrial sectors, and due to the rising demand for HAp nanoparticles, considerable work has been performed to develop a variety of synthetic pathways that incorporate scientifically and practically novel aspects. Numerous studies have been conducted to examine how changes in reaction parameters will successfully influence crucial HAp features. HAp can also be synthesized from biogenic sources such as HAp-rich fish scales or animal bones as an alternative to chemical precursors. Various preparation techniques produce crystals with varying sizes, but it has been found that nano-sized HAp exhibits a greater number of bioactive properties as compared to micron-sized HAp. Rather than considering conventional methods, this review focuses on alternative approaches such as emulsion, pyrolysis, combustion, and sonochemical methods along with waste bio-sources (biogenic sources) to obtain HAp. We summarize the currently accessible information pertaining to each synthesis process, while also focusing on their benefits and drawbacks.

Abstract:Calcium phosphates are extensively used biomaterials for repairing bone tissue due to their osteoconduction and osteoinduction properties. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a type of calcium phosphate that has gained the attention of researchers because of its high crystallinity, superior corrosion resistance, and good mechanical and biological properties. This makes it ideal for use in dental and orthopaedic applications. Natural HAp particles present in physiological tissues have plate-like or rod-like morphology in the nanometre range, while synthetic HAp particles exhibit an irregular morphology and are in the micron range. The usage of surfactants as templates during the synthesis has become a successful strategy to regulate the morphology and size of the HAp particles to closely resemble the natural HAp. In this article, the authors have reviewed the effects of various chemical surfactants (such as cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, and non-ionic), biosurfactants (or biomolecules extracted from different parts of plants such as roots and leaves), and bio-wastes on the structural (morphology, size, and shape) and biological (bioactivity and biocompatibility) properties of the HAp particles synthesized through various methods. The nucleation and growth mechanisms of HAp particles in the presence of various surfactants through different methods are discussed. Even though there has been significant research on surfactant-assisted HAp particles, the detailed mechanisms behind the changes in the biological properties with the addition of surfactant are poorly understood. Orthopedic application and anticancer properties of nano-hydroxyapatite

Abstract:As the nanotech research is unceasingly developing, more and more properties of nanomaterials have been discovered. Among them, nano-hydroxyapatite attracts much attention. Not only its biocompatibility and mechanical properties, which makes them fine materials of artificial bone, but its unique properties of anti-cancer also increasingly gets everybody's attention. In this paper, studies about nano-hydroxyapatite in the field of orthopaedics are reviewed, to promote bone growth and new bone neovascularization, especially having excellent physiological property as a modification material. Moreover, we also make a summary of its anti-cancer property. It is strongly believed that nano-hydroxyapatite will make an exploration and widely application.
Controlled Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite Crystals Templated by Novel Surfactants and Their Enhanced Bioactivity

Abstract:In this paper, we report that hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanocrystals with various shape and size have been successfully prepared by a dual template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis approach in isopropanol/water mixed solvents. Herein, we chose 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (ABSA) and polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG-4000) as structure-directed templates, respectively. By gradually changing the mass ratios (R) of PEG-4000 to ABSA, the obtained HAP samples can undergo distinct morphological evolution accordingly. A class of unique sheet-like HAP sample could be formed when only using ABSA as template. Moreover, when the R value was changed to 1/4, uniform and high-yielding HAP plate-shaped structure can be obtained. When only using PEG-4000 as a template, almost novel and wedge-shaped HAP samples can be obtained. The results demonstrated that the obtained plate-like HAP sample has single-crystalline behavior and uniform distribution in both size and shape. Additionally, we perform and evaluate the bioactivity of HAP in simulated body fluid (SBF), indicating that the two obtained HAP samples can possess apparently improved bioactivity compared to previous literature reports, and bone-like apatite could be readily formed on the HAP surface through different soaking periods in SBF. Notably, for the first time, a novel method for evaluating the in vitro bioactivity of HAP has been proposed. Therefore, the presented synthetic route for HAP is well-controlled and facilitated, which could be extended to the preparation of other biomaterials with specific morphologies and architectures.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HA), which shares similarities in both chemical composition and structure with bone phosphate systems, and has garnered significant attention in biomedicine due to its outstanding biocompatibility, bioactivity, osteoconduction, and osteoinductivity. Its resemblance to the mineral phase found in bone tissue has led to its extensive utilization in bone grafting and implantation, dental materials, and drug delivery systems. Furthermore, HA's characteristics can be tailored on various synthetic methods, including precipitation, sol-gel, and biomimetic approaches allowing for the production of customized materials with precisely controlled properties. Recent research has focused on enhancing the HA's mechanical strength, biodegradability, and bioactivity through composite formulations with polymers, ceramics, and other components, aiming to develop advanced biomaterials with improved properties for myriad biomedical applications. This comprehensive review outlines the diverse fabrication methods for HA and its derivatives, highlighting their biomedical applications and recent advancements. As for the synthesis and functionalization of HA, attentions have been paid to the innovative and efficient methods, precise control of crystal structure and morphology, surface and doping modification, and bionics. Special focus is placed on combining HA with other biomaterials for tissue regeneration, implants, cancer therapy and diagnostics. Optimization of mechanical properties and biocompatibility of HA, personalized customization according to individual differences, and enhancement of antibacterial properties are essential for tissue regeneration and implants. For anti-tumor, precise and combination therapies, as well as the molecular mechanism of the interaction between HA and tumor cells, need to be further explored. Emerging uses in endodontics and anti-inflammatory treatments are also discussed. The review concludes by proposing future research directions to address a wider range of medical challenges effectively.
