Abstract:We demonstrate fourth-order quantum beat between sunlight and single photons from a quantum dot. With a fast time-resolved detection system, we observed high-visibility quantum beat between the independent photons of different frequencies from the two astronomically separated light sources. The temporal dynamics of the beat oscillation indicate the coherent behavior of the interfering photons, and the raw visibility of two-photon interference shows violation of the classical limit with a frequency mismatch of three-times the line width.
A Mixed Quantum-Classical Liouville Study Of The Population Dynamics In A Model Photo-Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reaction

Abstract:We apply two approximate solutions of the quantum-classical Liouville equation (QCLE) in the mapping representation to the simulation of the laser-induced response of a quantum subsystem coupled to a classical environment. These solutions, known as the Poisson Bracket Mapping Equation (PBME) and the Forward-Backward (FB) trajectory solutions, involve simple algorithms in which the dynamics of both the quantum and classical degrees of freedom are described in terms of continuous variables, as opposed to standard surface-hopping solutions in which the classical degrees of freedom hop between potential energy surfaces dictated by the discrete adiabatic state of the quantum subsystem. The validity of these QCLE-based solutions is tested on a non-trivial electron transfer model involving more than two quantum states, a time-dependent Hamiltonian, strong subsystem-bath coupling, and an initial energy shift between the donor and acceptor states that depends on the strength of the subsystem-bath coupling. In particular, we calculate the time-dependent population of the photoexcited donor state in response to an ultrafast, on-resonance pump pulse in a three-state model of an electron transfer complex that is coupled asymmetrically to a bath of harmonic oscillators through the optically dark acceptor state. Within this approach, the three-state electron transfer complex is treated quantum mechanically, while the bath oscillators are treated classically. When compared to the more accurate QCLE-based surface-hopping solution and to the numerically exact quantum results, we find that the PBME solution is not capable of qualitatively capturing the population dynamics, whereas the FB solution is. However, when the subsystem-bath coupling is decreased (which also decreases the initial energy shift between the donor and acceptor states) or the initial shift is removed altogether, both the PBME and FB results agree better with the QCLE-based surface-hopping results. These findings highlight the challenges posed by various conditions such as a time-dependent external field, the strength of the subsystem-bath coupling, and the degree of asymmetry on the accuracy of the PBME and FB algorithms. Abstract:We demonstrate sub-Poissonian number differences in four-wave mixing of Bose-Einstein condensates of metastable helium. The collision between two Bose-Einstein condensates produces a scattering halo populated by pairs of atoms of opposing velocities, which we divide into several symmetric zones. We show that the atom number difference for opposing zones has sub-Poissonian noise fluctuations whereas that of nonopposing zones is well described by shot noise. The atom pairs produced in a dual number state are well adapted to sub shot-noise interferometry and studies of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type nonlocality tests.

Abstract:Misinterpretation in the preceding Comment of my recent analysis of the past of a photon is corrected. There is nothing in this analysis which is "contrary to the usual quantum expectations" but, nevertheless, it does provide "further understanding and interpretation of the system considered". In particular, it teaches us that the naive common sense argument frequently used in the literature including the Comment has to be abandoned.

Abstract:Two port feedback has been theoretically studied and proved to be effective in enhancing the degree of entanglement of the output beams for an optical four-wave mixing process, but the loss effects and phase delays need to be further concerned. Here, we use a model that is closer to practical implementation. By reasonably tuning the coefficients, we find that higher degree of entanglement and higher power of the output beams can be obtained, and the requirement for phase locking accuracy could be looser, which means this model is more promising for practical applications in quantum computation and quantum communication.

Abstract:We study atom scattering from two colliding Bose-Einstein condensates using a position sensitive, time resolved, single atom detector. In analogy to quantum optics, the process can also be thought of as spontaneous, degenerate four wave mixing of de Broglie waves. We find a clear correlation between atoms with opposite momenta, demonstrating pair production in the scattering process. We also observe a Hanbury Brown and Twiss correlation for collinear momenta, which permits an independent measurement of the size of the pair production source and thus the size of the spatial mode. The back to back pairs occupy very nearly two oppositely directed spatial modes, a promising feature for future quantum optics experiments.

Abstract:Superposition is one of the most distinctive features of quantum theory and has been demonstrated in numerous single-particle interference experiments 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . Quantum entanglement 5 , the coherent superposition of states in multi-particle systems, yields more complex phenomena 6 , 7 . One important type of multi-particle experiment uses path-entangled number states, which exhibit pure higher-order interference and the potential for applications in metrology and imaging 8 ; these include quantum interferometry and spectroscopy with phase sensitivity at the Heisenberg limit 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , or quantum lithography beyond the classical diffraction limit 13 . It has been generally understood 14 that in optical implementations of such schemes, lower-order interference effects always decrease the overall performance at higher particle numbers. Such experiments have therefore been limited to two photons 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 . Here we overcome this limitation, demonstrating a four-photon interferometer based on linear optics. We observe interference fringes with a periodicity of one-quarter of the single-photon wavelength, confirming the presence of a four-particle mode-entangled state. We anticipate that this scheme should be extendable to arbitrary photon numbers, holding promise for realizable applications with entanglement-enhanced performance.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the four-wave mixing of optical and matter waves resulting from the scattering of a short light pulse off an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, as recently demonstrated by D. Schneble et al. [Science 300, 475 (2003)]]. We show that atomic "pair production" from the condensate results in the generation of both forward- and backward-propagating matter waves. These waves are characterized by different phase-matching conditions, resulting in different angular distributions and temporal evolutions.

Quantum beats of a macroscopic polariton condensate in real space

Abstract:We experimentally observe harmonic oscillations in a bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined within an elliptical trap. These oscillations arise from quantum beats between two size-quantized states of the condensate, split in energy due to the trap's ellipticity. By precisely targeting specific spots inside the trap with non-resonant laser pulses, we control the frequency, amplitude, and phase of these quantum beats. The condensate wavefunction dynamics are visualized on a streak camera and mapped to the Bloch sphere, demonstrating Hadamard and Pauli-Z operations. We conclude that a qubit based on a superposition of these two polariton states would exhibit a coherence time exceeding the lifetime of an individual exciton-polariton by at least two orders of magnitude.

Abstract: By using the nonuniform discrete Fourier transform on the center positions of the symmetric intensity distribution of the output beam, we recover the vibration information of two mirrors, which is lost in the analysis of Danan \emph{et al.} in the work [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 240402 (2013), arXiv:1304.7469]. We believe a photon always follows continuous trajectories, and a photon has to enter an interferometer at first and then leave it, if this photon has ever been inside the interferometer.

Abstract:We solve Dirac's equation for an electron in the field of a two-frequency plane electromagnetic wave, deriving general formulas for the probabilities of radiation of an electromagnetic wave by the electron, and for the probabilities for pair production by a photon when the two-frequency wave is circularly polarized. In contrast to the case of a monochromatic-plane electromagnetic wave, when an electron is in the field of a two-frequency circularly polarized wave, the emission rates of various "biharmonic photons" are affected by interference between the two waves. When a high-energy photon is in such a field, similar interference effects arise in the process of pair production.
Non-perturbative Effects in Attosecond Four-Wave Mixing Spectra

Abstract:We study the nonlinear optical response of argon to a four-wave-mixing pulse sequence consisting of an extreme ultraviolet pulse, an overlapping collinear IR and an non-collinear delayed IR pulses. Absorption of an extreme ultraviolet and an IR photon from the collinear beams excites, sequentially, the $3s^{-1}4p$ bright state and the {$3s^{-1}3d/5s$} dark states. The subsequent absorption of an IR photon from the non-collinear beam results in an angled extreme ultraviolet emission whose variation with delay encodes coupling between autoionizing-states, dark-state lifetimes, and non-perturbative effects. Both our measurements and \emph{ab initio} simulations of the angled four-wave-mixing signal show a double-peak structure in delay dependence, in excellent agreement with each other. We attribute the minimum at the center of the signal to the rapid Rabi cycling, driven by the IR pulse, between dark states and the $3s^{-1}4p$ resonance, which results in the destructive interference in the final transition amplitude.

Quantum Beat Phenomenon Presence in Coherent Spin Dynamics of Spin-2 ^87rb Atoms in a Deep Optical Lattice

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental work (A. Widera, et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 19045), we study the collisional spin dynamics of two spin-2 ^87Rb atoms confined in a deep optical lattice. When the system is initialized as |0,0>, three different two-particle Zeeman states are involved in the time evolution due to the conservation of magnetization. For a large magnetic field B>0.8 Guass, the spin coherent dynamics reduces to a Rabi-like oscillation between the states |0,0> and magnetic field, a general three-level coherent oscillation displays. In particular, around a critical magnetic fieldB_c≃0.48Guass, the probability in the Zeeman states phenomenon, ready to be confirmed in future experiments.

Multiple Photon-Echo Rephasing of Coherent Matter Waves

Abstract:We investigate the multiple photon echo processes in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with inhomogeneous momentum broadening. By applying Bragg pulses with adjusted frequency mismatch to induce multiple rephasing, the BEC satisfies the coherence condition for successive superradiance. The atomic system can be efficiently transferred to a high momentum state step by step and emits multiple photon echo signals. These echo signals as a sequence show increasing widths and descending peaks, reflecting a residual dephasing effect due to kinetic-energy phase discrepancy during the population inversions. Our work may contribute to the coherence maintenance for ultracold atomic gas in the quantum information area and the high-precision measurement of atomic momentum width.

Abstract: In this letter we propose a protocol to reverse a quantum many-body dynamical process. We name it "many-body echo" because the underlying physics is closely related to the spin echo effect in nuclear magnetic resonance systems. We consider a periodical modulation of the interaction strength in a weakly interacting Bose condensate, which resonantly excites quasi-particles from the condensate. A dramatic phenomenon is that, after pausing the interaction modulation for half a period and then continuing on with the same modulation, nearly all the excited quasi-particles in the resonance modes will be absorbed back into the condensate. During the intermediate half period, the free evolution introduces a $\pi$ phase, which plays a role reminiscent of that played by the $\pi$-pulse in the spin echo. Comparing our protocol with another one implemented by the Chicago group in a recent experiment, we find that ours is more effective at reversing the many-body process. The difference between these two schemes manifests the physical effect of the micro-motion in the Floquet theory. Our scheme can be generalised to other periodically driven many-body systems.
