Abstract:Topological insulators give rise to exquisite electronic properties because of their spin-momentum locked Dirac-cone-like band structure. Recently, it has been suggested that the required opposite parities between valence and conduction band along with strong spin-orbit coupling can be realized in correlated materials. Particularly, SmB6 has been proposed as candidate material for a topological Kondo insulator. Here we observe, by utilizing scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy down to 0.35 K, several states within the hybridization gap of about ±20 meV on well characterized (001) surfaces of SmB6. The spectroscopic response to impurities and magnetic fields allows to distinguish between dominating bulk and surface contributions to these states. The surface contributions develop particularly strongly below about 7 K, which can be understood in terms of a suppressed Kondo effect at the surface. Our high-resolution data provide insight into the electronic structure of SmB6, which reconciles many current discrepancies on this compound.
Hot Electron Effects in the 2D Superconductor-Insulator Transition

Abstract:The parallel magnetic field tuned two-dimensional superconductor-insulator transition has been investigated in ultrathin films of amorphous Bi. The resistance is found to be independent of temperature on both sides of the transition below approximately 120 mK. Several observations suggest that this regime is not intrinsically "metallic" but results from the failure of the films' electrons to cool. The onset of this temperature-independent regime can be moved to higher temperatures by either increasing the measuring current or the level of electromagnetic noise. Temperature scaling is successful above 120 mK. Electric field scaling can be mapped onto temperature scaling by relating the electric fields to elevated electron temperatures. These results cast doubt on the existence of an intrinsic metallic regime and on the independent determination of the correlation length and dynamical critical exponents obtained by combining the results of electric field and temperature scaling.

Abstract:The electrical resistivity ρ and thermoelectric power S in the charge-density wave (CDW) state of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor NbSe3 under transverse magnetic field were studied systematically. The dramatic variations of the thermoelectric power, as well as the resistivity, with the magnetic field H, were analyzed in a modified two-band model. The results can be interpreted well in terms of the conversion of electron-like charge carrier into CDW condensed state caused by the enhancement of CDW gap. Below 30 K, the variation of the electron-like charge carrier density with magnetic field derived from thermoelectric power data deviates from that derived from magnetoresistance data, which implies that there could be other effects of magnetic field on the dynamics of charge carriers than the effect on the density of charge carrier.

Abstract:We report the a.c. susceptibility study of Dy_xTb_{2-x}Ti_2O_7 with x in [0, 2]. In addition to the single-ion effect at Ts (single-ion effect peak temperature) corresponding to the Dy3+ spins as that in spin ice Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and a possible spin freezing peak at Tf (Tf < 3 K), a new peak associated with Tb^{3+} is observed in $\chi_{ac}(T)$ at nonzero magnetic field with a characteristic temperature T^* (Tf < T^* < Ts). T^* increases linearly with x in a wide composition range (0 < x < 1.5 at 5 kOe). Both application of a magnetic field and increasing doping with Dy3+ enhance T^*. The T^* peak is found to be thermally driven with an unusually large energy barrier as indicated from its frequency dependence. These effects are closely related to the crystal field levels, and the underlying mechanism remains to be understood.
Large Magnetoresistance and Large Magnetothermopower Effect in the Dirac Material EuMn0.8Sb2.

Abstract:In this article, the structure, transport and magnetic properties were studied in details for EuMn0.8Sb2 crystals with the orthorhombic structure and Mn deficiencies. It was found that the temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits a metallic behavior in the whole measuring temperature range, different from that in the crystals without Mn deficiencies. A large positive magnetoresistance (MR) (similar to 127% at 2 K and similar to 25% at 300 K, in 9 T field) was observed, which can be ascribed to the combination of semiclassical MR and quantum limit MR of Dirac electrons. We also observed the high mobility of the carriers and large magnetothermopower effect at low temperatures, and two magnetic transitions emerging at similar to 24 K and similar to 10 K, respectively, corresponding to the antiferromagnetic ordering and canted arrangement of the Eu moments. Our findings shed new light on the intrinsic properties of EuMn0.8Sb2 and demonstrate the existence of Dirac fermions.

Abstract:We studied the electric field effect on superconductivity in atomically thin flakes of NbSe2 prepared by mechanical exfoliation. We found that these NbSe2 flakes are superconducting down to a thickness of a single unit cell consisting of two molecular layers of NbSe2 with an onset superconducting transition temperature (T-c) up to 2.5 K. We demonstrated that the T-c of the thinnest flakes can be modulated by an applied gate voltage with a T-c shift as large as 200 mK, which is larger than expected from a simple consideration based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. We discuss the possible reasons for the observed enhanced electric field modulation of T-c.

Abstract:Topological materials provide an interesting platform in the study of thermoelectric effect due to their novel electronic properties. Here we report the magneto-Seebeck (MS) effect, large Nernst effect, and a possible temperature-induced Lifshitz transition in topological semimetal YbMnSb2. It exhibits evident quantum oscillations in the MS effect from which six frequencies are extracted and a light effective mass of F4 is obtained. The large Nernst effect with the Nernst thermopower of about 40 & mu;VK-1 is discovered around 120 K and 14 T. Combining the analysis of the first-principles calculations and the Hall effect, we suggest that the large Nernst signal could mainly stem from the Dirac bands-induced high mobility and small Fermi energy (& epsilon;F). Besides, it could be further enhanced by the modified carrier properties resulting from the temperature-induced Lifshitz transition through the so-called ambipolar effect.

Abstract:Based on conventional energy band theory, an approach is presented to describe the electronic structure of crystalline insulators in the presence of a finite homogeneous electric field. The expression of polarization is derived which extends the "Berry phase" theory of polarization to nonzero fields. The characteristics of the solutions are studied in detail and the associations with the existing perturbation theories and computational schemes are discussed.

Abstract:We study the temperature dependence of the conductivity of the 2D electronic solid. In realistic samples, a domain structure forms in the solid and each domain randomly orients in the absence of the in-plane field. At higher temperature, the electron transport is governed by thermal activation form of $\sigma_{xx}(T)\propto e^{-\Delta_0/k_BT}$. The impurities will localize the electron states along the edges of the crystal domains. At sufficient low temperature, another transport mechanism called Mott's variable range hopping mechanism, similar to that in a disorder insulator takes effect. We show that as the temperature decreases, a crossover from the fixed range hopping of the transport to the variable range hopping of transport in the 2D electron system may be experimentally observed.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the local structure of liquid Sb has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. It is shown that about 10% of the atoms with coordination of 3 and weak Peierls distortion exist in liquid Sb just above its melting point. The Peierls distortion weakens gradually with increasing temperature and vanishes at about 750 degrees C. This structural variation in liquid Sb is different from the normal liquid-liquid phase transition. This work reveals the relationship between the variation in the local structure and the change in the physical properties, such as the electrical resisitvity of liquid Sb, with temperature. The complete agreement between the measured electrical resistivity values during heating and cooling processes suggests that the structural units with the features of a rhombohedron appear above the melting point of Sb during solidification. Abstract:The electron-phonon (el-ph) and phonon-phonon interactions play a key role in determining electronic and thermal transport properties, respectively, in promising two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor devices. In this study, we investigated el-ph interactions using Wannier-Fourier interpolation method and renormalized phonon scattering considering finite-temperature effects in Bi2TeSe2 monolayer. The results show that the optical phonon modes dominate the carrier scattering, where level repulsion induced by crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect effectively suppresses intervalley scattering, leading to high hole mobility. Moreover, the strong anharmonicity in Bi2TeSe2 monolayer results in the temperature-dependent softening of its optical phonons, along with a corresponding variation in interatomic force constants (IFCs). As a result, the lattice thermal conductivity is remarkably low and exhibits weak temperature dependence. Finally, the predicted dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit exceeds unity in the range of 200-800 K, indicating the potential of Bi2TeSe2 monolayer for thermoelectric applications. This work provides new insights into the elimination of intervalley scattering by crystal field splitting and SOC effects, and paves the way for the evaluation of thermoelectric properties of materials with complex scattering mechanisms and strong anharmonicity. Abstract:We report experimental investigation of the resistivity and Nernst effect in two-dimensional (2D) NbSe2 crystals.A strongly enhanced Nernst effect,100 times larger than that in bulk NbSe2,caused by moving vortices is observed in thin film.It is found that in the low temperature,high magnetic field regime,pinning effects show little dependence on the thickness and resistivity of the superconductor films.Strong Nernst signals persist above the superconducting transition,suggesting that the Nernst effect is a sensitive probe to superconducting fluctuations.A magnetic field induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is evident,which is surprising in that such a SIT usually takes place in disordered dirty superconductors,while our samples are highly crystalline and close to the clean limit.Hence,our results expand the scope of SIT into 2D crystal clean superconductors.
The Interplay of Landau Level Broadening and Temperature on Two-Dimensional Electron Systems

Abstract:This work investigates the influence of low temperature and broadened Landau levels on the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional electron systems. The interplay between these two physical parameters on the magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential, the specific heat and the magnetization is calculated. In the absence of a complete theory that explains the Landau level broadening, experimental and theoretical studies in literature perform different model calculations of this parameter. Here it is presented that different broadening parameters of Gaussian-shaped Landau levels cause width variations in their contributions to interlevel and intralevel excitations. Below a characteristic temperature, the interlevel excitations become negligible. Likewise, at this temperature range, the effect of the Landau level broadening vanishes.

Abstract:We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the BiS2-based superconductor Nd(O,F)BiS2. Two small electron-like Fermi surfaces around X (pi, 0) are observed, which enclose 2.4% and 1.1% of the Brillouin zone area, respectively, corresponding to an electron doping of 7% per Bi site. The low-energy spectrum consists of a weakly-dispersing broad hump and a dispersive branch, which follows well the calculated band dispersion. This hump is drastically suppressed with increasing temperature, while the dispersive branch is essentially unaffected. The anomalous thermal effect indicates a highly interacting electronic state, in which the superconducting pairing develops.

Abstract:Temperature dependent X-ray diffraction is carried out in order to study lattice vibrational behavior in Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3−xFexOy (x=0 and 0.08 respectively). The study focuses attention on the (002) diffraction peak. The lattice parameters and the anomalous behavior of the intensity of the (002) peak show the existence of a lattice softening effect at approximately 130 and 200 K. The samples with different values of Tc show different vibrational behavior.
Evidence of Weyl Fermion Enhanced Thermal Conductivity Under Magnetic Fields in Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator Mn(Bi(1-x)Sb(x))2Te4

Abstract:We report thermal conductivity and Seebeck effect measurements on Mn(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4 (MBST) with x = 0.26 under applied magnetic fields below 50 K. Our data shows clear indications of the electronic structure transition induced by the antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition driven by applied magnetic field as well as significant positive magnetothermal conductivity in the Weyl semimetal state of MBST. Further, by examining the dependence of magnetothermal conductivity on field orientation for MBST and comparison with the magnetothermal conductivity of MnBi2Te4 we see evidence of a contribution to thermal conductivity due to Weyl fermions in the FM phase of MBST. From the temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient under magnetic fields for MBST, we also observed features consistent with the Fermi surface evolution from a hole pocket in the paramagnetic state to a Fermi surface with coexistence of electron and hole pockets in the FM state. These findings provide further evidence for the field-driven topological phase transition from an AFM topological insulator to a FM Weyl semimetal.

High Magnetic Field Induced Crossover from the Kondo to Fermi Liquid Behavior in 1$T$-Vte$_{2}$ Single Crystals

Abstract:The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of metallic 1T-VTe2 single crystals were investigated at temperatures from 1.3 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Upon applying a high magnetic field, it is found that the electrical resistivity displays a crossover from the logarithmic divergence of the single-impurity Kondo effect to the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. The Brillouin scale of the negative magnetoresistivity above the Kondo temperature T-K = 12 K indicates that the Kondo features originate from intercalated V ions, with S = 1/2. Both magnetic susceptibility and Hall effect show an anomaly around T-K. By using the modified Hamann expression we successfully describe the temperature-dependent resistivity under various magnetic fields, which shows the characteristic peak below T-K due to the splitting of the Kondo resonance.

Abstract:The two-gap structure in the superconducting state of MgB_2 gives rise to unusual thermodynamic properties which depart markedly from the isotropic single-band BCS model, both in their temperature- and field dependence. We report and discuss measurements of the specific heat up to 16 T on ceramic, and up to 14 T on single crystal samples, which demonstrate these effects in the bulk. The behavior in zero field is described in terms of two characteristic temperatures, a crossover temperature Tc_pi ~ 13 K, and a critical temperature Tc = Tc_sigma ~ 38 K, whereas the mixed-state specific heat requires three characteristic fields, an isotropic crossover field Hc2_pi ~ 0.35 T, and an anisotropic upper critical field with extreme values Hc2_sigma_c ~ 3.5 T and Hc2_sigma_ab ~ 19 T, where the indexes \pi and \sigma refer to the 3D and 2D sheets of the Fermi surface. Irradiation-induced interband scattering tends to move the gaps toward a common value, and increases the upper critical field up to ~ 28 T when Tc = 30 K.

Field-Induced Crossover of Criticalities of Vortex Dynamics in Tl2ba2cacu2o8 Thin Films

Abstract:By analyzing I-V characteristics (E-B curves), which were experimentally determined on Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 thin films in magnetic fields B-e varying from 0 T to 5 T, we find that the transition of the linear resistivity rho(lin) = [E/j](j-->0) signaling superconductivity exhibits different criticalities for different magnetic fields. Starting with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at T-BKT = 103.7 It for B-e = 0 T, one induces a crossover to a quasi-2D or 3D vortex-glass transition at a finite T-g for magnetic fields below a few kOe, and finally a "true" 2D vortex-glass with T-g = 0 K for higher fields. We argue that this field-induced crossover of criticalities is a general feature of all strongly anisotropic high-T-c superconductors.
