Abstract:The two-gap structure in the superconducting state of MgB_2 gives rise to unusual thermodynamic properties which depart markedly from the isotropic single-band BCS model, both in their temperature- and field dependence. We report and discuss measurements of the specific heat up to 16 T on ceramic, and up to 14 T on single crystal samples, which demonstrate these effects in the bulk. The behavior in zero field is described in terms of two characteristic temperatures, a crossover temperature Tc_pi ~ 13 K, and a critical temperature Tc = Tc_sigma ~ 38 K, whereas the mixed-state specific heat requires three characteristic fields, an isotropic crossover field Hc2_pi ~ 0.35 T, and an anisotropic upper critical field with extreme values Hc2_sigma_c ~ 3.5 T and Hc2_sigma_ab ~ 19 T, where the indexes \pi and \sigma refer to the 3D and 2D sheets of the Fermi surface. Irradiation-induced interband scattering tends to move the gaps toward a common value, and increases the upper critical field up to ~ 28 T when Tc = 30 K.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the special thermodynamic properties of MgB2 (magnesium diboride) in the superconducting state, especially how its specific heat capacity characteristics deviate from the traditional single - band BCS model. Specifically, the research focuses on: 1. **The influence of the two - gap structure on thermodynamic properties**: MgB2 has two different superconducting energy gaps, which lead to its thermodynamic properties in terms of temperature and magnetic field dependence being significantly different from the traditional single - band BCS model. The research shows the manifestations of these effects in bulk materials by measuring the specific heat capacity of ceramic and single - crystal samples in magnetic fields up to 16 T (for ceramics) and 14 T (for single - crystals). 2. **Determination of critical temperatures and fields**: - **Behavior under zero - field conditions**: Two characteristic temperatures are described, namely the crossover temperature \( T_{\pi,c}\approx13 \, \text{K} \) and the critical temperature \( T_{\sigma,c} = T_c\approx38 \, \text{K} \). - **Specific heat capacity in the mixed state**: Three characteristic magnetic fields are required, namely the isotropic crossover magnetic field \( H_{\pi,2c}\approx0.35 \, \text{T} \), and the anisotropic upper critical magnetic fields, whose extreme values are \( H_{\sigma,2c,ab}\approx19 \, \text{T} \) and \( H_{\sigma,2c,c}\approx3.5 \, \text{T} \) respectively. 3. **The effect of irradiation - induced inter - band scattering**: Irradiation - induced inter - band scattering tends to make the energy gaps approach a common value, and when the critical temperature \( T_c\approx30 \, \text{K} \), the upper critical magnetic field can be increased to about 28 T. Through these studies, the paper aims to reveal the specific influence of the two - gap structure in MgB2 on its superconducting properties, especially its unique performance in terms of specific heat capacity. These results are of great significance for understanding the superconducting mechanism of MgB2 and its potential in practical applications.
