Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:A simple and low-crosstalk 1 × 4 silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode grating-assisted-couplers is proposed. Mode transitions can be flexibly controlled by designing the grating period at the phase-matching condition. Due to the contra-directional coupling, precise control of the coupling strength and the coupling length are not needed in the system. Calculation results show that the insertion loss and the 3 dB bandwidths of the device are 0.2 dB and 3.7 nm, 0.34 dB and 7.6 nm, and 0.21 dB and 11.8 nm for the channels which (de)multiplex to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modes of the bus waveguide, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-mode (de)multiplexer utilizing the coupling between tapered waveguides and a wide multimode waveguide is designed and experimentally demonstrated. The tapered waveguides are composed of a reverse-tapered waveguide and a narrow tapered waveguide. The proposed mode (de)multiplexer is fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer in a commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS-compatible process. The qualitative functionality of the device is mainly determined by the width of the large end of the reverse-tapered waveguide. Experimental results show that the demultiplexing crosstalk of a pair of tapered-coupler-based two-mode (de)multiplexers is lower than -13.5 dB within a bandwidth from 1528 nm to 1570 nm and less than -16.6 dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm.

Abstract:We propose a silicon photonicgrating coupling scheme for dual-band multiplexing in optical fibers. By utilizing subwavelength grating effective refractive index engineering, a dual-band operating grating coupler and a wavelength-polarization diplexer are designed. Both devices are fabricated on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and require only one 220-nm full etch step to facilitate cost-effective production. The subwavelength grating coupler guides S-band and O-band lights from a single-mode fiber into a waveguide as transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, while the subwavelength diplexer separates the two signals into two waveguides. Experimentally, our proposed scheme for coupling and multiplexing can achieve a total insertion loss of –4.26 dB at near 1490 nm and –5.86 dB at near 1310 nm.

Abstract:Multiplexing of optical modes in waveguides is demonstrated using coupled vertical gratings. The device utilizes sinusoidally corrugated waveguides of different widths with a period designed to multiplex information at 1.55 µm. The design, fabrication and characterization of devices is performed. Multiplexing of modes is demonstrated in optical structures which support 3 and 5 quasi-TE modes. The design utilizes counter-propagating modes in periodic structures, thus enabling the device to combine its mode division multiplexing capabilities with wavelength division multiplexing functionalities to further augment the multiplexing capacity of the device.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing on an integrated photonic chip is critical for future optical networks. High-order mode multiplexing is desired to increase the transmission capacity. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a silicon on-chip high-order mode (de)multiplexer using subwavelength grating (SWG) structure, which supports 11-mode (de)multiplexing on a TE-polarized light (TE0-TE10). The proposed mode (de)multiplexer comprises three directional couplers and seven SWG-based directional couplers. Measurement results show that all the 11 channels have low crosstalk values (-15.4 to -26.4 dB) and low insertion losses (0.1 to 2.6 dB) at 1545 nm. To the best of our knowledge, our device achieves the highest-order-mode (de)multiplexing on a silicon photonic chip.

Abstract:In this paper, a design of a silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on cascaded counter-tapered couplers is proposed and investigated. By using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, structural parameters of each counter-tapered coupler in our proposed mode (de)multiplexer are optimized so that high conversion efficiencies can be obtained and coupling lengths can be significantly shortened. The coupling lengths of counter-tapered couplers in the proposed silicon four-mode (de)multiplexer operating in transverse-electric polarization are 8 μm, 9 μm, and 10 μm. The corresponding conversion efficiencies are respectively 98.98%, 99.98%, and 98.68%. Experimental results show that, the fabricated device exhibits a demultiplexed crosstalk of -32.76 dB, -27.10 dB, -32.45 dB, or -33.29 dB at 1550 nm wavelength, when the fundamental transverse-electric mode is respectively launched into the ports Input0, Input1, Input2, or Input3. The measured demultiplexed crosstalk is less than -15.15 dB from 1525 to 1596 nm and lower than -18.12 dB from 1525 to 1561 nm.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel on-chip two-mode division multiplexing circuit using a tapered directional coupler-based TE(0)&TE(1) mode multiplexer and demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator platform. A low insertion loss (0.3 dB), low mode crosstalk (< -16 dB), wide bandwidth (~100 nm), and large fabrication tolerance (20 nm) are measured. An on-chip mode multiplexing experiment is carried out on the fabricated circuit with non return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) signals at 40 Gbit/s. The experimental results show clear eye diagrams and moderate power penalty for both TE(0) and TE(1) modes.

Abstract:The integration density and the system complexity of photonic integrated circuits are scaling significantly, especially for optical computing, signal processing, and other emerging applications. As is such, the quest for information multiplexing is becoming increasingly important. On-chip mode division multiplexing (MDM) is considered to be a promising solution which is capable of processing a large amount of data via intrinsic parallelism. Various device structures have been proposed for on-chip mode multiplexing while most of which either lack the scalability or occupy too much chip area. Here, a scalable and compact silicon photonic mode (de)multiplexer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on tilt waveguide junctions assisted with shallow-etched subwavelength slots. The number of channels can be easily scaled by cascading multiple junctions. Compared with conventional cascaded structures, the proposed shallow etched slots enable a new mode evolution scheme which significantly shrinks the device length. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, four-mode (de)multiplexer for TE 0 –TE 3 modes is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The measured insertion losses for all four modes are below 1.29 dB, while the crosstalks are all below −14.4 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, a segment-coupled six-mode multiplexer based on multi-core fiber (MCF) is proposed to achieve multiplexing of LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 , LP 02 , LP 31 and LP 12 modes according to the principle of mode coupling and phase matching. The mode multiplexer consists of a two-part fiber waveguide that supports six modes of transmission at 1.55 μm wavelength. The transmission performance is analyzed with the finite element method (FEM) and the beam propagation method (BPM). The simulation results show that the insertion loss (IL) of the mode multiplexer is less than 1 dB in the wavelength range of 1.5439–1.5558 μm, and the lowest IL is 0.1837 dB. The coupling efficiencies (CEs) of the six modes are 99.7 %, 92.0 %, 98.6 %, 98.3 %, 97.4 % and 86.6 %, respectively. The designed mode multiplexer dramatically improves fiber space utilization while achieving more higher-order mode conversion. The mode multiplexer can be applied to the mode division multiplexing (MDM) system to solve the problem of mode multiplexing and demultiplexing.

Abstract:A three-mode (de)multiplexer based on two cascaded asymmetric Y junctions is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform for mode-division multiplexing applications. Within a bandwidth from 1537 to 1566 nm, the best demultiplexing crosstalk of the fabricated device, composed of a three-mode multiplexer, a multimode straight waveguide, and a three-mode demultiplexer, is up to -31.5 dB, while in the worst case it is -9.7 dB. The measured maximum insertion loss is about 5.7 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The mode crosstalk and insertion loss can be further improved by high-quality fabrication processes. Abstract:A small silicon mode (de)multiplexer with cascaded asymmetrical directional couplers is demonstrated experimentally. As an example, a four channel mode (de)multiplexer is designed and realized for TM polarization. The fabricated mode (de)multiplexer has a low excess loss (<1 dB) as well as low crosstalk (<= 23 dB) over a broad wavelength range (similar to 20 nm). Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.
