Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A multimode interference (MMI) polarization splitter with easy fabrication process was demonstrated in Silicon-On-Insulator substrate. The minimum device size, 8 μm×1034 μm was designed by Quasi-state imaging effect theory. Numerical simulations show that this optimized MMI polarization splitter has a good fabrication tolerance. The tolerance of width and length is ±0.04 μm and ± 10 μm for transverse electric (TE) mode and ±0.14 μm and ±35 μm for transverse magnetic (TM) mode. The bandwidths are 20 nm and 80 nm for TE and TM respectively. Experiment results exhibits a -15 dB polarization extinction ratio bandwidth of 20 nm for the through-path and much wider for the cross-path. The extinction ratio and crosstalk achieve (-27.3 dB, -22.6 dB) for TE and (-26.6 dB, -23.9 dB) for TM.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter based on an asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) on a sub-micron silicon-on-insulator platform is demonstrated experimentally. The present MZI polarization beam splitter (PBS) is fabricated with a double-etching process and the deeply-etched region includes the MZI arms and the multimode-interference (MMI) couplers. In this way, the birefringence of the MZI arms and the power splitting ratio of the MMI coupler become insensitive to the etching depth, which makes the fabrication easier. The 2x2 MMI couplers are optimized to be polarization-insensitive and have a balanced ratio (50:50) for both polarizations. The measured extinction ratio of the fabricated MZI PBS is higher than 10 dB in the wavelength range from 1.54 to 1.58 mu m.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:A high extinction ratio polarization beam splitter based on multimode interference coupler has been obtained on silicon-on-insulator. The multimode interference coupler is designed by using quasi-state imaging theory, and fabricated with E-beam lithography and induced coupled plasma etching technology. The device has footprint of 8.16μm×1034μm. The measured extinction ratios remain 45dB for TE mode and 23dB for TM mode at wavelength of 1.55μm. The extinction ratio of more than 20dB for TE mode and 15dB for TM mode is observed covering the whole C-band.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:A compact multimode interference (MMI) coupler based polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed and realized, which is fabrication-tolerant and fully compatible with standard silicon photonic foundry processes. The PBS on the 220nm silicon strip waveguide is as small as 4.2μm×132.64μm. Besides, the simulated fabrication tolerances of the width, the length and the etching depth are more than 100nm (80nm), 5μm (5.65μm) and 60nm (120nm) for TE (TM) mode, respectively. In addition, the experimental results demonstrate that the bandwidth is about 26nm with the extinction ratio better than 15dB.

Abstract:A compact and ultrabroadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) utilizing a hybrid plasmonic Y-branch (HPYB) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The HPYB consists of a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a horizontal HPW formed by silicon (Si) and silver (Ag) strip waveguides sandwiched with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, in which the vertical and horizontal hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) are excited by the input transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The HPMs are split into different ports and coupled back to TE and TM modes to implement the polarization splitting function. A simplified and compact HPYB is robust for the HPMs' generation. The structure is wavelength insensitive since the HPMs' excitation is weakly correlated to the optical wavelengths. The simulation results show that the HPYB-based PBS has a compact footprint of $5 \times 1.8\ \mu\text{m}^2$ and an ultralarge working bandwidth of 285 nm, with the polarization crosstalk <; -10 dB and the worst-case TE (TM) mode insertion loss of -1.53 (-2.35) dB. The device also exhibits a large fabrication tolerance of 210-nm variation (from -100 to 110 nm) to the waveguide width for both polarizations.

Abstract:A polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on cascaded step-size multimode interference (MMI) coupler is demonstrated on silicon on insulator. The total area of MMI sections is smaller than 7 x 600 mu m(2). This PBS shows 25-nm bandwidth for transverse-electric polarization and 20-nm bandwidth for transverse-magnetic polarization with an extinction ratio more than 20 dB. Abstract:The polarization beam splitter is a key component for polarization manipulation in photonic integrated circuits,but it is challenging to design for low-refractive-index optical materials,due to the low birefringence of the wave-guides.We propose what we believe is a novel compact vertical-dual-slot waveguide-based coupling scheme for silicon carbide,enabling efficient low-birefringence polarization splitting by extensively modulating the trans-verse-magnetic mode distribution.We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the device in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator integrated platform,with a small footprint of 2.2 μm×15 μm.The device,easy to fabricate via a single lithography process as other components on the chip,exhibits low insertion loss of＜0.71 dB and＜0.51 dB for the transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarized light,respectively,and polarization extinction ratio of＞13 dB,over 80 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:Polarization handing devices including polarization beam splitters (PBSs) are playing a pivotal role in polarization-involved applications [1]. Many waveguide PBSs have been demonstrated with various structures. Regarding the design simplicity and fabrication tolerance, the multimode interference (MMI) structure is a good choice to realize PBSs. However, the conventional MMI-based PBS are quite long (10~103 μm) since the polarization dependence of the beat-length of an MMI section is not strong [2].

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.
