Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:An ultracompact polarization beam splitter based on silicon nitride-on-silicon platform is proposed and analyzed, where the two polarized modes are guided in two separated layers independently, almost no affecting each other. By using subwavelength grating structure in bottom silicon layer, the injected TE mode undergoes a strong coupling from input port to adjacent waveguide and then outputs from a bending waveguide. As to the injected TM mode, it is directly transmitted along the above silicon nitride layer. Moreover, the adjacent waveguide in bottom layer is cut by a right angle at one corner to further enhance the device performance. Results show that a coupling length of only $2.7~\mu \text{m}$ is achieved with an insertion loss of 0.22 dB (0.2 dB), an extinction ratio of 27.05 dB (25.73 dB), and a reflection loss of −26.94 dB (−37.79 dB) for TE (TM) mode at $1.55~\mu \text{m}$ . In addition, fabrication tolerances and field evolution are also presented.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:A switchable polarization beam splitter utilizing GST-on-silicon waveguides is introduced and comprehensively investigated in this paper. Based on the phase matching and mode hybridization, structural parameters of the presented device are optimized by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, so that the output fundamental transverse-electric (TE0) and transverse-magnetic (TM0) modes can be switched by controlling the phase state of GST and the device exhibits broad bandwidth, low crosstalk, and high polarization extinction ratio. For the designed device with the amorphous GST, the crosstalk is lower than -23.40 dB and the polarization extinction ratio is larger than 21.35 dB over the C-band. In the case of the crystalline GST, within the C-band, the crosstalk of less than -27.37 dB and the polarization extinction ratio of greater than 21.37 dB are achieved.

Abstract:The polarization beam splitter is a key component for polarization manipulation in photonic integrated circuits,but it is challenging to design for low-refractive-index optical materials,due to the low birefringence of the wave-guides.We propose what we believe is a novel compact vertical-dual-slot waveguide-based coupling scheme for silicon carbide,enabling efficient low-birefringence polarization splitting by extensively modulating the trans-verse-magnetic mode distribution.We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the device in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator integrated platform,with a small footprint of 2.2 μm×15 μm.The device,easy to fabricate via a single lithography process as other components on the chip,exhibits low insertion loss of＜0.71 dB and＜0.51 dB for the transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarized light,respectively,and polarization extinction ratio of＞13 dB,over 80 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:A low-loss and wideband silicon polarizing beam splitter is demonstrated with the assistance of a nano-bridge waveguide. Transverse magnetic light can be coupled to the cross port through the nano-bridge waveguide, while the transverse electric light comes out mainly from the through port. The designed device has a coupling length of 19.6 & mu;m, which can realize an extinction ratio of 32.43 dB for TM mode or 34.23 dB for TE mode at a 1565-nm wavelength. Compared with the conventional three-waveguide coupler structure, the proposed device is based on a resonant tunneling principle, which can help to effectively improve the fabrication tolerance. The device is fabricated with a commercial CMOS processing facility, which can achieve an extinction ratio of 23.07 dB for TM or 23.46 dB for TE mode with a low excess loss, and the extinction ratio of more than 10 dB can be realized in the wavelength range from 1525 to 1610 nm for both modes. The device performance can be further improved, which would facilitate its practical applications in commercial integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:Recently, integrated optical devices working at 2-μm wavelengths have attracted considerable attention. Among such devices, a polarization beam splitter is an essential building block for constructing the on-chip circuit. Here, we have proposed an ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter with tunable transmissions working at 2-μm waveband. Coupled-mode based directional coupler is utilized for the device design. Subwavelength grating structures provide efficient dispersion control, which endows broad optical bandwidths. In addition, a rear-bent coupler is cascaded at the output of the device to furtherly suppress the crosstalk. The silicon-Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 hybrid materials provide tunable transmissions. When the Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 is in the amorphous state, with high extinction ratios more than 20 dB, the bandwidths exceed 200 nm (1900∼2100 nm) and 130 nm (1925∼2055 nm) for TE0 and TM0, respectively. Furthermore, the insertion losses are less than 0.24 dB (1900∼2100 nm) and 0.56 dB (1925∼2055 nm) for TE0 and TM0, respectively. When being in the crystalline state, the device works as an absorber that fully attenuates the input energy. In different intermediate amorphous–crystalline hybrid states, it is also possible to achieve tunable transmissions.
