Abstract:By using the result of robust strictly positive real synthesis of polynomial segments for continuous time systems, it is proved that, for any two n-th order polynomials a(z) and b(z), the Schur stability of their convex combination is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an n-th order polynomial c(z) such that c(z)/a(z) and c(z)/b(z) are both strictly positive real. We also provide the construction method of c(z). Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:The concept of weak strictly positive real regions is introduced, and its properties are discussed. By using the complete discrimination system for polynomials, complete characterization of the (weak) strictly positive real regions for transfer functions in coefficient space is given. A new effective method for robust strictly positive real synthesis is proposed. This method results in necessary and sufficient conditions for low-order stable interval polynomials and segment polynomials, and is also efficient for high-order cases. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:This paper studies the fundamental problems: whether an affine system affected by additive disturbances is robustly transferable from a source set (simplex) to a target set (polytope) and whether it is robustly stabilizable with its state constrained in a simplex. First, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of affine feedback control that solves the robust reachability problem. Further investigation is provided for two situations relying on whether the union of the source set and the target set is convex or non-convex. For the former one, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained in the form of linear inequalities, while for the latter, several computationally feasible sufficient conditions are found. Second, we show that robust stabilization subject to a state constraint is equivalent to find a feasible solution to a linear equation. Once it is known that either of the problems has a solution by checking the derived conditions, design of control laws is then straightforward.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Spin and Orbital States and Their Phase Transitions of the Perovskite-Type Ti Oxides: Weak coupling Approach

Abstract:The magnetic phase diagram of the perovskite-type Ti oxides as a function of the GdFeO3-type distortion is examined by using the Hartree-Fock analysis of a multiband d-p Hamiltonian from a viewpoint of competitions of the spin-orbit interaction, the Jahn-Teller (JT) level-splitting and spin-orbital superexchange interactions. Near the antiferromagnetic (AFM)-to-ferromagnetic (FM) phase boundary, A-type AFM [AFM(A)] and FM states accompanied by a certain type of orbital ordering are lowered in energy at large JT distortion, which is in agreement with the previous strong coupling study. With increasing the GdFeO3-type distortion, their phase transition occurs. Through this magnetic phase transition, the orbital state hardly changes, which induces nearly continuous change in the spin coupling along the c-axis from negative to positive. The resultant strong two-dimensionality in the spin coupling near the phase boundary is attributed to the strong suppression of T_N and T_C, which is experimentally observed. On the other hand, at small GdFeO3-type without JT distortions, which correspond to LaTiO3, the most stable solution is not G-type AFM [AFM(G)] but FM. Although the spin-orbit interaction has been considered to be relevant at the small or no JT distortion of LaTiO3 in the literature, our analysis indicates that the spin-orbit interaction is irrelevant to the AFM(G) state in LaTiO3 and superexchange-type interaction dominates. On the basis of further investigations on the nature of this FM state and other solutions, this discrepancy is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Strict positive realness (SPR) is an important concept in absolute stability theory, adaptive control, system identification, etc. This paper characterizes the strictly positive real regions in coefficient space and presents a robust design method for SPR transfer functions. We first introduce the concepts of SPR regions and weak SPR regions and show that the SPR region associated with a fixed polynomial is unbounded, whereas the weak SPR region is bounded. We then prove that the intersection of several weak SPR regions associated with different polynomials can not be a single point. Furthermore, we show how to construct a point in the SPR region from a point in the weak SPR region. Based on these theoretical development, we propose an algorithm for robust design of SPR transfer functions. This algorithm works well for both low order and high order polynomial families. Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Abstract:This chapter studies the robust synthesis problem for strictly positive real (SPR) transfer functions. The concepts of SPR regions and weak SPR regions are introduced. Abstract:In this paper, a new numerical method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) for robust Strictly Positive Real (SPR) synthesis is presented. The algorithm works well in coefficient space of continuous-time systems and is computationally efficient for some types of polynomial families, such as polynomial segments, interval polynomials and polytopic polynomials et al. The method can be easily extended to the discrete-time systems. Illustrative examples are provided showing that the method is rather effective for arbitrary given high-order systems.

Abstract:A method for positive polynomial validation based on polynomial decomposition is proposed to deal with control synthesis problems. Detailed algorithms for decomposition are given which mainly consider how to convert coefficients of a polynomial to a matrix with free variables. Then, the positivity of a polynomial is checked by the decomposed matrix with semidefinite programming solvers. A nonlinear control law is presented for single input polynomial systems based on the Lyapunov stability theorem. The control synthesis method is advanced to multi-input systems further. An application in attitude control is finally presented. The proposed control law achieves effective performance as illustrated by the numerical example.

Abstract:Dual to the interval model, the diamond model proves to be an alternative powerful device for taking into account the variation of parameters in prescribed ranges. This paper deals with the robust stability of certain diamond polynomial families and the strict positive realness of certain diamond rational function families. By exploiting the geometric characterizations of their value sets, we show that, for the strict positive realness of the rational function family with the coefficients of numerator and denominator each varying in diamonds, the same property of only 24 specially selected extreme rational functions will suffice. An interesting result concerning the stability of the so-called simplex polynomial family is provided, namely, the stability of 4 extreme points and 2 exposed edges in this family will ensure the stability of the whole family. We also extend this result to the strict positive realness of the simplex rational function family where 30 extreme points and 2 exposed edges need to be checked. The geometric characterizations of their value sets are further investigated, and some sufficient conditions for the stability of the simplex polynomial family as well as their geometric interpretations are presented.

Abstract:This paper gives a combinatorial proof of a ''yes'' answer to an open question presented in [1], stated as follows: ''given a multilinear polynomial E(x): [0, 1](n) --> R, is it true that E-b(x) = E(x) - b(t)z has a strict local minimum over the discrete set {0,1}(n) for almost all b of sufficiently small norm?'' The given combinatorial proof is completed directly by providing a sufficient condition for a conjecture on the strict local minima of multilinear polynomials also postulated in [1] to hold. In addition, a simple counterexample is presented to demonstrate that the conjecture may be not true if the provided sufficient condition is not satisfied.
