Abstract:By using the result of robust strictly positive real synthesis of polynomial segments for continuous time systems, it is proved that, for any two n-th order polynomials a(z) and b(z), the Schur stability of their convex combination is necessary and sufficient for the existence of an n-th order polynomial c(z) such that c(z)/a(z) and c(z)/b(z) are both strictly positive real. We also provide the construction method of c(z). Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:The concept of weak strictly positive real regions is introduced, and its properties are discussed. By using the complete discrimination system for polynomials, complete characterization of the (weak) strictly positive real regions for transfer functions in coefficient space is given. A new effective method for robust strictly positive real synthesis is proposed. This method results in necessary and sufficient conditions for low-order stable interval polynomials and segment polynomials, and is also efficient for high-order cases. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:Dual to the interval model, the diamond model proves to be an alternative powerful device for taking into account the variation of parameters in prescribed ranges. This paper deals with the robust stability of certain diamond polynomial families and the strict positive realness of certain diamond rational function families. By exploiting the geometric characterizations of their value sets, we show that, for the strict positive realness of the rational function family with the coefficients of numerator and denominator each varying in diamonds, the same property of only 24 specially selected extreme rational functions will suffice. An interesting result concerning the stability of the so-called simplex polynomial family is provided, namely, the stability of 4 extreme points and 2 exposed edges in this family will ensure the stability of the whole family. We also extend this result to the strict positive realness of the simplex rational function family where 30 extreme points and 2 exposed edges need to be checked. The geometric characterizations of their value sets are further investigated, and some sufficient conditions for the stability of the simplex polynomial family as well as their geometric interpretations are presented.

Abstract:A method for positive polynomial validation based on polynomial decomposition is proposed to deal with control synthesis problems. Detailed algorithms for decomposition are given which mainly consider how to convert coefficients of a polynomial to a matrix with free variables. Then, the positivity of a polynomial is checked by the decomposed matrix with semidefinite programming solvers. A nonlinear control law is presented for single input polynomial systems based on the Lyapunov stability theorem. The control synthesis method is advanced to multi-input systems further. An application in attitude control is finally presented. The proposed control law achieves effective performance as illustrated by the numerical example.

Abstract:The robustness of a linear system in the view of parametric variations requires a stability analysis of a family of polynomials. If the parameters vary in a compact set A , then obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions to determine stability of the family FA is one of the most important tasks in the field of robust control. Three interesting classes of families arise when A is a diamond, a box or a ball of dimension n+1 . These families will be denoted by FDn , FBn , and FSn , respectively. In this article, a study is presented to contribute to the understanding of Hurwitz stability of families of polynomials FA . As a result of this study and the use of classical results found in the literature, it is shown the existence of an extremal polynomial f(α∗,x) whose stability determines the stability of the entire family FA . In this case f(α∗,x) comes from minimizing determinants and in some cases f(α∗,x) coincides with a Kharitonov's polynomial. Thus another extremal property of Kharitonov's polynomials has been found. To illustrate our approach, it is applied to families such as FDn , FBn , and FSn with n≤5 . The study is also used to obtain the maximum robustness of the parameters of a polynomial. To exemplify the proposed results, first, a family FDn is taken from the literature to compare and corroborate the effectiveness and the advantage of our perspective. Followed by two examples where the maximum robustness of the parameters of polynomials of degree 3 and 4 are obtained. Lastly, a family FB5 is proposed whose extreme polynomial is not necessarily a Kharitonov's polynomial. Finally, a family FS3 is used to exemplify that if the boundary of A is given by a polynomial equation in several variables, the number of candidates to be an extremal polynomial is finite.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the robust stability of a class of polynomial families more general than the interval polynomial family and diamond polynomial family. We prove that the Hurwitz stability of some special cases of this class of polynomial families can be determined by checking finite polynomials. We also give an example to illustrate that it is not always possible to determine the Hurwitz stability of all this class of polynomial families by checking finite polynomials.

Abstract:This chapter studies the robust synthesis problem for strictly positive real (SPR) transfer functions. The concepts of SPR regions and weak SPR regions are introduced. By using the complete discrimination system (CDS) for polynomials, complete characterization of the (weak) SPR regions for transfer functions in coefficient space is given. It is shown that the weak monic SPR region associated with a fixed polynomial is bounded and the intersection of several weak monic SPR regions associated with different polynomials cannot be a single point. Furthermore, we show how to construct a point in the SPR region from a point in the weak SPR region. Based on these theoretical development, we propose an algorithm for robust design of SPR transfer functions. This algorithm works well for both low-order and high-order polynomial families. Especially, the derived conditions are necessary and sufficient for robust SPR design of polynomial segment or low-order (n ≤ 4) interval polynomials. Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of this algorithm.

Abstract:Well-known theorems in classical analysis tell us that a pair $p_0$, $p_1$ of real polynomials with positive coefficients have simple, interlacing roots if and only if all nontrivial minors of a certain infinite matrix associated to $p_0$ and $p_1$ -- called the Hurwitz matrix $H(p_0,p_1)$ -- are strictly positive. What happens if we relax one side of this equivalence, allowing $p_0$ and $p_1$ to weakly interlace, i.e. have shared and/or repeated roots? It has been shown in this case that $H(p_0,p_1)$ is still totally nonnegative. In the present work, we prove the converse statement: if $H(p_0,p_1)$ is totally nonnegative, then $p_0$ and $p_1$ weakly interlace. Thus our result completes the analogy between the strict and weak versions of this equivalence. The proof employs Temperley-Lieb immanants, first introduced by Rhoades and Skandera.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine linear programming (LP) based relaxations for synthesizing polynomial Lyapunov functions to prove the stability of polynomial ODEs. A common approach to Lyapunov function synthesis starts from a desired parametric polynomial form of the polynomial Lyapunov function. Subsequently, we encode the positive-definiteness of the function, and the negative-definiteness of its derivative over the domain of interest. Therefore, the key primitives for this encoding include: (a) proving that a given polynomial is positive definite over a domain of interest, and (b) encoding the positive definiteness of a given parametric polynomial, as a constraint on the unknown parameters. We first examine two classes of relaxations for proving polynomial positivity: relaxations by sum-of-squares (SOS) programs, against relaxations that produce linear programs. We compare both types of relaxations by examining the class of polynomials that can be shown to be positive in each case. Next, we present a progression of increasingly more powerful LP relaxations based on expressing the given polynomial in its Bernstein form, as a linear combination of Bernstein polynomials. The well-known bounds on Bernstein polynomials over the unit box help us formulate increasingly precise LP relaxations that help us establish the positive definiteness of a polynomial over a bounded domain. Subsequently, we show how these LP relaxations can be used to search for Lyapunov functions for polynomial ODEs by formulating LP instances. We compare our approaches to synthesizing Lyapunov functions with approaches based on SOS programming relaxations.

Abstract:Strict positive realness (SPR) is an important concept in absolute stability theory, adaptive control, system identification, etc. This paper characterizes the strictly positive real regions in coefficient space and presents a robust design method for SPR transfer functions. We first introduce the concepts of SPR regions and weak SPR regions and show that the SPR region associated with a fixed polynomial is unbounded, whereas the weak SPR region is bounded.
