Abstract:In conventional fast-ramp-based target detection schemes for the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, all chirp sequences are performed fully on two-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) to estimate range and velocity of a target, and all range-Doppler cells are scanned by the two-dimensional (2-D) cell-averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) detector to extract valid targets against background noise. This results in an extremely high computational complexity. To decrease the complexity while maintaining a desired performance, this article proposes a target detection scheme based on distributed one-dimensional (1-D) CA-CFAR and region-of-interest (ROI) preprocessing, which performs Doppler-FFT only for range ROI cells and scans only Doppler ROI cells to extract pretargets. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme significantly decreases complexity and simultaneously improves detection performance in terms of detection probability, figure of merit (FoM), and CFAR loss, as compared with the conventional schemes. The advantages of the proposed scheme over the conventional ones are further verified by field tests under multitarget scenario, using our recently developed FMCW radar with high angular resolution.

Abstract:Multitarget detection is very challenging, especially when targets are densely distributed. In conventional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection algorithms, the detection threshold is determined based on a pre-estimated background level (BL). However, interfering targets inevitably lead to inaccurate BL estimation, resulting in degraded detection performance. In our previous work, a new solution was developed and verified to be effective; in that solution, compressed sensing (CS)-based detector performs target detection without relying on BL estimation, and a subsequent CFAR regulation processor achieves the desired false alarm rate based on the statistical information of the reduced samples obtained by removing the detected targets and adjacent guard cells from the original samples. However, for scenes with a high target density, the CS-based detector suffers from performance degradation while acquiring the correlation between linear measurements of the signal and the sensing matrix due to the high local signal sparsity. To address this shortcoming, this article proposes a deep neural network (DNN)-based detector that further improves the detection performance by converting the target detection into a problem of peak sequence classification of frequency intensity (FI) measurements from radar. A DNN detector trained on augmented simulated data shows excellent generalization ability for deployment in real scenes. In addition, to achieve better computational efficiency, a Taylor-series-based approximate maximum likelihood estimator with an explicit expression is applied in the CFAR regulation process for the first time. Both simulation and field tests are performed to verify the superiority of the proposed algorithm over conventional algorithms.

Abstract:One-bit radar, performing signal sampling and quantization by a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter, is a promising technology for many civilian applications due to its low-cost and low-power consumptions. In this article, problems encountered by a 1-bit linear-frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) radar are studied, and a two-stage target detection method termed as the dimension-reduced generalized approximate message passing (DR-GAMP) approach is proposed. First, the spectrum of 1-bit quantized signals in a scenario with multiple targets is analyzed. It is indicated that high-order harmonics may result in false alarms and cannot be neglected. Second, based on the spectrum analysis, the DR-GAMP approach is proposed to carry out target detection. Specifically, linear preprocessing methods and target predetection are first adopted to perform the dimension reduction, and then, the generalized approximate message passing algorithm is utilized to suppress high-order harmonics and recover true targets. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the 1-bit LFMCW radar under typical parameters. It is shown that compared to the conventional radar applying linear processing methods, the 1-bit LFMCW radar has about 1.3-dB performance gain when the input signal-to-noise ratios of targets are low. In the presence of a strong target, it has about 1.0-dB performance loss.

Abstract:Frequency-shift-keying (FSK) radars are used to measure the absolute range and radial speed of multiple moving targets with different velocities in short-range scenarios. The range is calculated from a well-known formula that depends on the phase difference of the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) components associated with the two time-multiplexed transmitted tones. From a signal perspective, this work demonstrates that an additional novel term in the equation must be compensated to gain enhanced range accuracy in the measurements. This may facilitate the exploitation of longer waveform periods, leading to a relaxation in the stringent locking-time requirements currently imposed on the phase-locked loops of the signal-generation blocks in FSK radars. Moreover, detailed simulation examples for multiple moving targets are addressed. The obtained results validate the theoretical framework and the proposed computationally-efficient compensation algorithm for improved absolute-range-measurement accuracy in FSK radars.
A Novel Range Detection Method for 60ghz LFMCW Radar

Abstract:The linear frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) millimeter-wave radar has been widely used in automotive industry applications. The motivation of this paper is to propose a segmented range detection (SRD) method on the foundation of plentiful mature research on the target detection of LFMCW radar. According to the SRD method, the detection range (about 150m in the scene of vehicular collision warning) is divided into several segments and triangular modulation waveform which consists of several different frequencies is designed. Compared with typical digital signal processing method, the SRD method can availably decrease the bandwidth of the IF signal, therefore the in-band noise will be significantly reduced and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) improved. Additionally, different range resolutions can be achieved and average range resolution improved. The SRD method is also validated through multiple outdoor experiments with the use of 60 GHz LFMCW millimeter-wave radar system designed by our research group. The efficiency of the SRD method is demonstrated in terms of ranging accuracy and range resolution after the analysis of experiment results.

Abstract:High PRF stepped-frequency radar can achieve simultaneously the advantages of pulse Doppler (PD) and high range resolution (HRR) radar, but it's difficult to resolve the range ambiguity brought about by high PRF. In this paper, a novel method based on the phase difference out of the FFT between two adjacent range cells is proposed to solve the problem. This method firstly solves the range/Doppler coupling in the FFT by iterative reckoning between the range and the Doppler of a target and the accuracy of both reach 5 high resolution bins respectively. Secondly, it eliminates the effects of the target motion to the phase difference, consequently the accuracy of resolving the range ambiguity is reasonably high. Simulation verifies its validity

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection plays a vital role in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. Most existing CFAR algorithms need to estimate background level before determining the detection threshold. In a multi-target scene, existence of interference targets could cause inaccurate estimation of background level, which will then lead to severely degraded performance of the CFAR algorithm. This is also called multi-target shadowing effect. To overcome the challenge, a compressed sensing CFAR (CS-CFAR) is proposed in this work, which detects the target of interest (TOI) relying on the correlation between the linear measurements of signal and the sensing matrix, instead of relying on an estimated background level as in conventional CFAR algorithms, and achieves a required false alarm rate by estimating the distributed parameters of reduced sample model. Through doing so the proposed CS-CFAR algorithm effectively mitigates impact of interference targets on the detection performance. Superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional ones in multi-target scenarios is verified by both simulation and test results.

Abstract:This paper presents a printed circuit board realization of a K-band portable frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar transceiver with beamforming array for short-range localization. The transmitter channel of the proposed radar consists of a free-running voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and a single patch antenna. A linear frequency-modulated chirp signal is generated by the VCO, which is controlled by an analog "sawtooth" voltage generator. The receiver channel has a four-element linear beamforming array, a six-port circuit, and a baseband circuit. The beam of the array can be continuously steered in a range of +/- 45 degrees on the H-plane through an array of vector controllers. Each vector controller is capable of simultaneously controlling the phase and the amplitude of the corresponding array element. The design principle of the binary-phase-shift attenuator, the vector controller, and the radar system are discussed. Calibration method of the array is introduced to minimize the errors caused by component variation and fabrication. The radiation patterns of the array with phase-only beam steering and phase-amplitude beamforming are measured and compared, demonstrating the advantage of the beamforming design. System-level experiments showed that the proposed solution is suitable for short-range localization. In addition, experiments with a human subject revealed the capability of the proposed radar system to discriminate a human target from other objects based on the vital-Doppler effect.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel radial velocity estimation and range shift compensation algorithm is proposed for high-range resolution profiling of moving targets in stepped-frequency (SF) radar. Compared to traditional methods, this algorithm is based on a more precise signal model, and can therefore achieve much higher estimation accuracy. Furthermore, the range shift problem caused by target motion can be resolved without alterations to the radar waveform. The performance of this algorithm is demonstrated using simulated and experimental results.

Abstract:Frequency-hopping (FH) MIMO radar-based dual-function radar communication (FH-MIMO DFRC) enables communication symbol rate to exceed radar pulse repetition frequency, which requires accurate estimations of timing offset and channel parameters. The estimations, however, are challenging due to unknown, fast-changing hopping frequencies and the multiplicative coupling between timing offset and channel parameters. In this paper, we develop accurate methods for a single-antenna communication receiver to estimate timing offset and channel for FH-MIMO DFRC. First, we design a novel FH-MIMO radar waveform, which enables a communication receiver to estimate the hopping frequency sequence (HFS) used by radar, instead of acquiring it from radar. Importantly, the novel waveform incurs no degradation to radar ranging performance. Then, via capturing distinct HFS features, we develop two estimators for timing offset and derive mean squared error lower bound of each estimator. Using the bounds, we design an HFS that renders both estimators applicable. Furthermore, we develop an accurate channel estimation method, reusing the single hop for timing offset estimation. Validated by simulations, the accurate channel estimates attained by the proposed methods enable the communication performance of DFRC to approach that achieved based on perfect timing and ideal knowledge of channel.

Abstract:In this paper, aiming to achieve high-resolution frequency estimation for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar applications, a novel frequency estimation algorithm based on parameterized de-alternating (PDA) is proposed. According to the beat signal model, the proposed PDA method is performed with a matched kernel function to achieve the best de-alternating performance (i.e. the maximum conversion from an oscillating signal to a constant signal). The kernel parameter is estimated by solving an optimization problem which is simple and computationally efficient. Moreover, for a multiple target scenario, the intrinsic chirp component decomposition (ICCD) method is employed to isolate different components of the beat signal, which can eliminate the mutual interference between adjacent components when performing the PDA method. Compared with the commonly used FFT technique, our method can greatly improve the frequency estimation resolution and achieve superior ranging performance with a limited bandwidth. Both simulated and experimental validations are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:In order to overcome the shortcomings of motion target range - velocity coupling in the LFMCW (Linear Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar mechanism, based on the relevant theoretical research results of LFMCW radar signal processing method, combined with the actual needs of the system, a signal processing method based on multi cycle LFMCW radar “beat - Fourier spectral analysis - MID” structure is put forward, and the distance - velocity decoupling is realized. It is done from the system scheme design, acquisition circuit analysis, and algorithm theory research to the final algorithm DSP realization process. The experimental results show that this method can achieve target detection and parameter estimation, and it can improve the ranging and speed measurement accuracy, and realize the distance - velocity decoupling of LFMCW radar. As a result, it is concluded that the method proposed in this study is simple and feasible, and the measurement accuracy is high, so it can greatly improve the efficiency of radar signal processing.

Abstract:Serious mismatch of matched filters, range migration, Doppler spread, and the stochastic scattering coefficient phase caused by high-speed target motion during a long integration time will result in poor parameter estimation performance of bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In this paper, an algorithm for jointly estimating velocity, direction of departure (DOD), and direction of arrival (DOA) of high-speed target using bistatic MIMO radar with dual-frequency transmitters is proposed. Multiplication of the baseband radar return at one frequency with the conjugate of that at another closely spaced frequency is employed not only to eliminate the stochastic scattering coefficient phase, but also to remove the effect of range walk and Doppler spread. With the integration of the multiplied echo along the fast time axis, followed by a Fourier transform of the integrated signal over a slow time dimension, the unambiguous velocity of a target is estimated. The virtual array is effectively formed by using the estimated velocity to construct new matched filter coefficients, followed by the matching of received signals with the constructed coefficients. The DOD and DOA of the high-speed target can thus be estimated using the super-resolution algorithm. Some numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:High-frequency (HF) radar plays a crucial role in the detection of far-range, stealth, and high-speed targets. Nevertheless, the echo signal of such targets typically exhibits a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and significant amplitude fluctuations because their radar cross-section (RCS) accounting for the HF band is in the resonance region. While enhancing detection performance often requires long-time integration, existing algorithms inadequately consider the impact of amplitude fluctuation. In response to this challenge, this article introduces an improved approach based on coherent and non-coherent integration. Initially, coherent integration, employing the generalized Radon Fourier transform (GRFT), is utilized to derive a candidate detection set of targets' range–time trajectories. This involves a joint solution for range migration (RM) and Doppler frequency migration (DFM) through a multi-parameter motion model search. Subsequently, the removal of low SNR pulses, followed by non-coherent integration, is implemented to mitigate amplitude fluctuation, referred to as Amplitude Fluctuation Suppression (AFS), and refine the detection outcomes. Both simulation and experiment results are provided to prove the effectiveness of the proposed AFS-GRFT algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, an effective target detection and localization method is proposed for a passive bistatic radar (PBR) system. The PBR system consists of a commercial FM radio station, which is a non-cooperative illuminator of opportunity (IO), referred to as the transmitter antenna and multiple surveillance antennas that form an antenna array, e.g., uniform linear array (ULA). Unlike other literatures where the reference signal is received by a directional antenna, here, the reference signal (direct path) is estimated by beamforming method. Then a modified extensive cancellation algorithm (MECA) based on (least squares) LS method is proposed to solve the disturbance cancellation. After cancelling the disturbance, the matched filter (MF) and LS methods are used for range-Doppler estimation of targets, and then the angles of targets are estimated based on beamforming method. The proposed method is suitable for an antenna array. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the superiority of the proposed MECA disturbance cancellation method and parameter estimation method.

Abstract:The target detection is an important task of radar systems.The detection performance of radar system can be improved by long-term signal integral when the signal to noise ratio(SNR)is low.However,with the development of aerospace technology,the target’s velocity becomes higher and higher.Also the target’s radar cross-section becomes smaller and smaller which results in SNR coming down.For the detection of high-speed targets,there would be serious echo range migration between the adjacent repeat intervals of the radar which will interference the method of coherent integration to improve the SNR.There would be coupling between frequency and the number of echo after the echo coherent integration.This coupling will give rise to the echo range migration in the time-domain when the target’s velocity is high.For the problem of high-speed target detection in radar system,this paper puts forward a new method based on multi-channels compensation.This method is aimed at diminishing the effect of the coupling and sets several channels to compensate velocity which reduces the coupling of the system in a certain channel.Therefore,the echo in the time-domain will have lower range migration or even no range migration.After speed compensation,the radar system compares the output of each channel,and transfers the maximum one of the output of the channel to the threshold detector which has the threshold value in advance.Then radar system estimates whether the target exits.The threshold value is chosen based on statistical property of Gaussian noise which meets the false detection probability when the input signal contains only Gaussian noise;the output signal should also have the characteristics of Gaussian noise.This method does not need to estimate the speed before targets detection and just need to determine the speed scope roughly.At the same time,the transmitting and receiving model of the millimeter wave radar is structured with the help of Matlab.Then the received signal is com-pensated through multi-channels.Theoretical and simulation results demonstrated that the method based on multi-channels compensation can effectively detect the high-speed targets and increase the SNR by 7 dB compared with the method based on coherent integration.So this method improves the detection performance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method for the intelligent detection of high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) targets. This method cascades the adaptive constant false alarm (CFAR) detector variability index (VI) with the convolutional neural network (CNN) to form a cascade detector (VI)CFAR-CNN. First, the (VI)CFAR algorithm is used for the first-level detection of the range–Doppler (RD) spectrum; based on this result, the two-dimensional window slice data are extracted using the window with the position of the target on the RD spectrum as the center, and input into the CNN model to carry out further target and clutter identification. When the detection rate of the detector reaches a certain level and cannot be further improved due to the convergence of the CNN model, this paper uses a dual-detection maps fusion method to compensate for the loss of detection performance. First, the optimized parameters are used to perform the weighted fusion of the dual-detection maps, and then, the connected components in the fused detection map are further processed to achieve an independent (VI)CFAR to compensate for the (VI)CFAR-CNN detection results. Due to the difficulty in obtaining HFSWR data that include comprehensive and accurate target truth values, this paper adopts a method of embedding targets into the measured background to construct the RD spectrum dataset for HFSWR. At the same time, the proposed method is compared with various other methods to demonstrate its superiority. Additionally, a small amount of automatic identification system (AIS) and radar correlation data are used to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of this method on completely measured HFSWR data.

Algorithm of Automatic Target-Position Acquisition for Long-Range Surveillance Radar

Abstract:Range extension caused by pulse compression is not well resolved in most automatic target position acquisition (ATPA) algorithms. This paper presents a two dimensional centroid algorithm, which is an extension of a one dimensional centroid algorithm. A simplified Peak Searching (PS) algorithm is also presented based on the characteristics of long range surveillance radar. Simulations show that this algorithm has higher estimation precision than the traditional area center (AC) algorithm. The algorithm is also easily implemented because of its recursive structure and low memory. The algorithm has already been successfully applied to a long range surveillance radar system.
