Abstract:One-bit radar, performing signal sampling and quantization by a 1-bit analog-to-digital converter, is a promising technology for many civilian applications due to its low-cost and low-power consumptions. In this article, problems encountered by a 1-bit linear-frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) radar are studied, and a two-stage target detection method termed as the dimension-reduced generalized approximate message passing (DR-GAMP) approach is proposed. First, the spectrum of 1-bit quantized signals in a scenario with multiple targets is analyzed. It is indicated that high-order harmonics may result in false alarms and cannot be neglected. Second, based on the spectrum analysis, the DR-GAMP approach is proposed to carry out target detection. Specifically, linear preprocessing methods and target predetection are first adopted to perform the dimension reduction, and then, the generalized approximate message passing algorithm is utilized to suppress high-order harmonics and recover true targets. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the 1-bit LFMCW radar under typical parameters. It is shown that compared to the conventional radar applying linear processing methods, the 1-bit LFMCW radar has about 1.3-dB performance gain when the input signal-to-noise ratios of targets are low. In the presence of a strong target, it has about 1.0-dB performance loss.
A Sidelobe Suppression Algorithm for 77 GHz MIMO Radars

Abstract:77 GHz radar has become a promising approach to enhance automotive safety by quickly detecting and identifying targets around the vehicle, especially in harsh weather conditions. This requires 77 GHz radars to provide environmental imaging with high resolution and reliability. However, radar images are easily blurred by sidelobes and background noises, which makes it difficult to extract real target information. In this paper, a sidelobe suppression algorithm based on the point spread function (PSF) and complex-valued neural network has been proposed to discriminate and suppress unwanted sidelobes while maintaining mainlobes referring to targets. To overcome the scarcity of real-world 77 GHz multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar datasets, this paper derives the formula of PSF for 77 GHz MIMO radars in detail and exploits the PSF to generate simulated datasets for training. In addition, to be compatible with the complex-valued radar datasets, a customized neural network model has also been established in this paper. The well-trained neural network is further adopted to suppress sidelobes on real-world radar images. Comprehensive simulations and measurements have proved the superior performance of the proposed method, especially in cases with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), large channel mismatches, small target Radar Cross-Section (RCS) and large observation angle.
A Novel Range Detection Method for 60ghz LFMCW Radar

Abstract:The linear frequency-modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) millimeter-wave radar has been widely used in automotive industry applications. The motivation of this paper is to propose a segmented range detection (SRD) method on the foundation of plentiful mature research on the target detection of LFMCW radar. According to the SRD method, the detection range (about 150m in the scene of vehicular collision warning) is divided into several segments and triangular modulation waveform which consists of several different frequencies is designed. Compared with typical digital signal processing method, the SRD method can availably decrease the bandwidth of the IF signal, therefore the in-band noise will be significantly reduced and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) improved. Additionally, different range resolutions can be achieved and average range resolution improved. The SRD method is also validated through multiple outdoor experiments with the use of 60 GHz LFMCW millimeter-wave radar system designed by our research group. The efficiency of the SRD method is demonstrated in terms of ranging accuracy and range resolution after the analysis of experiment results.

Abstract:Using wideband signals to improve the resolution performance of forward-looking imaging radar sensors is a very valuable topic. However, the frequency point and angle information are coupled in the array manifold for the wideband array signal, making the high-resolution estimation of range and angle extremely difficult under low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for the wideband forward-looking imaging radar. Firstly, the time delays are estimated by the estimation of signal parameters via rotation invariance techniques (ESPRIT). Then, multiple sets of filters are constructed by using the estimated delays and frequency information. The filters are equipped with sliding window technology to tackle the angle-frequency coupling problem encountered by wideband radar. Through these filters, the received signals are divided into several clusters that correspond to different time delays. Next, the relaxation (RELAX) algorithm is used to estimate the angle of the wideband signal in each cluster. Finally, the range refinement is carried out by using data from all antennas. Compared with the existing algorithms, the proposed Hybrid ESPRIT and RELAX algorithm with clustEring (HERE) decouples the frequency point and angle information for wideband forward-looking imaging radar and then achieves better imaging performance. A series of numerical experiments, including simulation experiments and actual data collected from a wideband forward-looking imaging prototype, have verified the superiority of the algorithm.
An Improved C2 Algorithm for Radar Low-Altitude Measurement

Abstract:As a result of multipath interference, tracking a low-altitude target always leads to an error which cannot be ignorable. Besides the direct reflection from the target, there are three alternative paths via the sea-surface. Under this circumstance, the conventional measurement of monopulse radar (using the real part of amplitude radio) will not represent the angle between the target and the boresight accurately. In this paper, C 2 algorithm is applied to process data from the sum and difference channels in order to measure the elevation angle. In some practical scenarios, C 2 algorithm may have an unsatisfied error. The reason of the error in C 2 algorithm and the method of reducing the error will be discussed in this paper. The results will show the improvement is feasible and effective in monopulse radar low-altitude measurement.

Abstract:Phase comparison monopulse technology is a widely used method for obtaining subbeam-level accuracy in angle estimates by processing the complex amplitude ratio of sum-anddifference beams. However, with increases in bandwidth and observation time, the interaction among multiple closely-spaced targets can significantly reduce the accuracy of angle estimates. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimator named 'Classify-Track' for radar operating in long-time coherent integration (LTCI) mode. Initially, we utilize time-varying radial delay features (TRDF) to match unresolved scattering centers across both fast and slow time. Subsequently, we employ the timevarying angle tracking function (TATF) to estimate time-varying angles by searching over slow time and integrating multiple scattering centers. This method, diverging from traditional monopulse techniques, is based on the target motion model and effectively utilizes the angle difference of extended targets at various slow times. Additionally, to reduce computational complexity, we also present a rank-reduced version of TATF (RR-TATF) and provide guidelines for selecting specific hyperparameters within the method. Finally, multiple simulation experiments were conducted using real electromagnetic data from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The results of these simulations confirm the superior performance of our estimator in various signal-to-noise ratio scenarios.

Abstract:Multiple input multiple output with frequency diversity array (FDA-MIMO) radar has unique advantages in mainlobe deception jamming suppression and target location. However, if the training sample contains the target signal, it will lead to poor jamming suppression performance and large target measurement error. To deal with the problem, a method of coarse target location in the time domain is proposed based on the cumulative sampling analysis. Taking full advantages of the strongest correlation characteristic between the expected steering vector and the true target, the feature vector and feature value corresponding to the true target are found after feature decomposition. The time domain location of the target is roughly estimated during the cumulative sampling analysis from near to far. Then, a pure jamming training sample can be obtained by avoiding the location. Noise subspace projection algorithm is used to measure the angle and range of the target while suppressing mainlobe jamming. The simulation results show that the proposed method can roughly estimate the target location in the time domain when the mainlobe deception jamming completely covers the target. Compared with conventional methods, the performance of jamming suppression and target localization error are closer to the performance of ideal sampling.

Abstract:Early radar warning is a significant step to lessen the fine scanning range of a receiver. The small size two-dimension (2-D) angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation part with moderate accuracy and sensitivity is important for an early radar warning receiver. In our method, we specially design an L-shaped antenna array (L-sAA) and connect it with dual-polarization binary phase shift keying modulator (DP-BPSKM). The dual-sideband (DSB) modulation is performed to transfer most of the optical power to electrical, so as to increase the sensitivity. It is also possible to map the AOA information of the incoming beam to photo-detected electrical power without a high extinction ratio modulator or optical filter. During the estimation, the 2-D AOA is firstly measured, whose measurement range is 18.22°∼90° and the measurement error is lower than 1°. Then, based on the 2-D AOA estimation results, the third one is mathematically calculated to construct 3-D location of the target. Noteworthy, the amplitude comparison function (ACF) is adopted in this method to make the system response irrelative to the received signal power, which endows the system with signal power fluctuation immunity. Experimental results show that this method is capable of measuring a single-tone signal and a bandwidth signal. This structure is very concise and meets the potential of on-chip integration.
Main lobe deceptive jamming suppression based on blind source separation and energy detection for monopulse radar

Abstract:The authors proposed a main lobe deceptive jamming suppression method for monopulse radar based on BSS and energy detection, which can achieve interference suppression while accurately estimating the angle of the real target. Main lobe deceptive jamming always causes the serious degradation of signal detection ability and angle measurement precision of monopulse radar. In recent years, the Blind Source Separation (BSS) method has been adopted to suppress the main lobe jamming. However, the separation results of BSS have the problem of amplitude ambiguity, which will cause the radar using monopulse angle measurement fail to measure the angle parameters after jamming suppression. To tackle this problem, a novel main lobe jamming suppression method is proposed based on BSS and energy detection. Firstly, the models of target echoes and jamming in the sum and difference beam receiving channels are derived. Secondly, the target echoes and interferences are separated by the Joint Approximate Diagonalisation of Eigenmatrices (JADE) algorithm, and then the unperturbed signal segments in the mixed signal are extracted by energy detection, thereby obtaining the precise ratio of the sum and difference channels to complete the angle measurement. Performance of the method was verified by numerical simulation. The results show that the proposed method can achieve interference suppression while accurately estimating the angle parameter of the target.

A Range-Doppler-Angle Estimation Method for Passive Bistatic Radar

Abstract:In this paper, an effective target detection and localization method is proposed for a passive bistatic radar (PBR) system. The PBR system consists of a commercial FM radio station, which is a non-cooperative illuminator of opportunity (IO), referred to as the transmitter antenna and multiple surveillance antennas that form an antenna array, e.g., uniform linear array (ULA). Unlike other literatures where the reference signal is received by a directional antenna, here, the reference signal (direct path) is estimated by beamforming method. Then a modified extensive cancellation algorithm (MECA) based on (least squares) LS method is proposed to solve the disturbance cancellation. After cancelling the disturbance, the matched filter (MF) and LS methods are used for range-Doppler estimation of targets, and then the angles of targets are estimated based on beamforming method. The proposed method is suitable for an antenna array. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the superiority of the proposed MECA disturbance cancellation method and parameter estimation method.

Abstract:A linear-scan-based wideband near-field radar cross section (RCS) measurement technique for achieving wide effective-angle-coverage is proposed in this letter. Both the data preprocessing and linear near-field to far-field transformation (LNF2FFT) techniques are used to ensure the accurate measurement of wideband far-field RCS in a wide azimuthal angle range. With the linear-scan-based near-field sampling strategy, the object under test (OUT) keeps stationary during the measurement process, and the equipment of turntable is not required. Moreover, based on the 2D plane wave expansion, LNF2FFT is proposed to translate the linearly sampled near-field data into far-field RCS pattern. An adaptive time gating strategy is also proposed to deal with the varied background property in liner samplings. Serval important practical factors relating to the measurement accuracy, such as phase center calibration, background subtraction and calibration, are also discussed in detail. Two illustrative test examples are presented, in which RCS measurement with wide effective-angle-coverage of ±35° and the average wideband measurement errors less than 0.4 dB are achieved in 1 m limited measurement range.

A Signal Processing Practice Method Based on LFMCW Radar

Abstract:In order to overcome the shortcomings of motion target range - velocity coupling in the LFMCW (Linear Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radar mechanism, based on the relevant theoretical research results of LFMCW radar signal processing method, combined with the actual needs of the system, a signal processing method based on multi cycle LFMCW radar “beat - Fourier spectral analysis - MID” structure is put forward, and the distance - velocity decoupling is realized. It is done from the system scheme design, acquisition circuit analysis, and algorithm theory research to the final algorithm DSP realization process. The experimental results show that this method can achieve target detection and parameter estimation, and it can improve the ranging and speed measurement accuracy, and realize the distance - velocity decoupling of LFMCW radar. As a result, it is concluded that the method proposed in this study is simple and feasible, and the measurement accuracy is high, so it can greatly improve the efficiency of radar signal processing.
Improved Target Direction-of-arrival Estimation Using Multiple Adjacent Beams for Airborne Phased Array Scanning Radar

Abstract:In order to avoid straddling loss, airborne phased array scanning radar transmits beams with small step angle, and then the same target can be detected again and again in multiple adjacent beams through azimuth scanning. Therefore, considering its long-range surveillance and high revisit rate, the authors may assume that the azimuth angle of the same target almost keeps unchanged during multiple beams. Furthermore, they can also model the target complex amplitude from each beam as an unknown deterministic signal with amplitude and phase difference that accounts for the antenna pattern and sampling starting time. A direction-of-arrival estimation algorithm that utilises multiple beams to obtain an accurate target angle is proposed. The signal model that jointly considers received data from multiple adjacent beams is introduced, and the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of target angle in noise and jamming sceneries is obtained. The performance of proposed method is investigated through Monte-Carlo simulations and compared with both the Cramer-Rao lower bound and with conventional ML technique that utilises one beam. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the presented algorithm.
Joint DOA-Distance Estimation Method for Radar Using a Novel Time-Domain Wideband Synthesis System

Abstract:In this article, a joint direction of arrival (DOA) and distance estimation (JDDE) method using a novel time-domain wideband (WB) synthesis signal system is proposed. In contrast to traditional time-domain synthesis (TDS) methods, which transmit subpulses separately, a uniform linear array (ULA) is used, and all stepped linear frequency-modulated (SLFM) subpulses are transmitted simultaneously. The echo signal is mixed with each transmitted signal of the corresponding antenna and filtered to separate the single-frequency components from different targets and array elements for synthesis. Single-frequency components have different frequencies and discontinuous phases due to wave-way differences. To solve the problem that single-frequency components cannot be synthesized directly, the frequency and phase of single-frequency components need to be calibrated, including frequency conversion and phase shift, which require DOA information of the targets. Consequently, a high-precision DOA algorithm that employs phase difference fitting, along with the corresponding generic phase unwrapping algorithm, is designed for the characteristics of the arrays and signal system in this article. After obtaining the DOA information, the WB synthesis algorithm is applied to synthesize the single-frequency components to obtain high-resolution ranging results. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the method has high distance resolution and JDDE accuracy. In a multitarget environment, the number of targets is not limited by the number of antennas. In addition, unlike traditional WB synthesis methods, the method utilizes multiple transmitting antennas to send SLFM signal pulses simultaneously rather than sequentially, which enhances the response speed of the radar.

A Low-Cost Monopulse Receiver with Enhanced Estimation Accuracy Via Deep Neural Network

Abstract:In this paper, a low-cost monopulse receiver with an enhanced direction of arrival (DoA) estimation accuracy via deep neural network (DNN) is proposed. The entire system is composed of a 4-element patch array, a fully planar symmetrical monopulse comparator network, and a down conversion link. Unlike the conventional design topology, the proposed monopulse comparator network is configured by four novel port-transformation rat-race couplers. In specific, the proposed coupler is designed to symmetrically allocate the sum ({\Sigma}) / delta ({\Delta}) ports with input ports, where a 360° phase delay crossover is designed to transform the unsymmetrical ports in the conventional rat-race coupler. This new rat-race coupler resolves the issues in conventional monopulse receiver comparator network design using multilayer and expensive fabrication technology. To verify the design theory, a prototype of the proposed planar monopulse comparator network operating at 2 GHz is designed, simulated, and measured. In addition, the monopulse radiation patterns and direction of arrival are also decently evaluated. To further boost the accuracy of angular information, a deep neural network is introduced to map the misaligned target angular positions in the measurement to the actual physical location under detection.

Abstract:Frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) radar has been paid much attention in forward-looking navigation applications because of its no-blind-range capability. However, after dechirp processing, pulse interference signals may appear in the range time domain, which seriously pollutes the whole radiation direction. In this article, a cross-domain low-rank and sparse (CD-LRS) optimization framework is proposed to enhance the angular resolution and suppress the pulse interference signals based on the scanning mode of its antenna. On the one hand, to cut off and recover the polluted signals, a low-rank spectra reconstruction approach is proposed by utilizing the low-rank characteristic of the Hankel matrix formed by the interference-rejected data in the range time domain. On the other hand, to suppress the residual interference signal and enhance the angular resolution simultaneously, an adaptive sparse reconstruction method is formed in the azimuthal time domain by adopting an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMMs)-based solver. Compared with the traditional anti-interference methods, the proposed framework can enhance the angular resolution and suppress the interference signals based on the signal features in different domains. Simulations and experimental results are applied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Abstract:Four-channel monopulse (FCM) technique is integral to contemporary radar systems for pinpointing and tracking multiple targets. However, the practical utility of FCM is significantly hindered by the issue of estimation failure, which arises from the specific relative phases and positions of the targets. In this paper, we introduce a polarimetric four-channel monopulse (PFCM) approach designed to deliver efficient, robust, and unambiguous resolution of two targets. Generally, PFCM adaptively modulates the null-polarization for each target. We begin by dissecting the limitations of the traditional method, utilizing the closed-form solution of FCM. Subsequently, we devise a novel closed-form solution that harnesses polarimetric adaptive nulling (PAN) technology to estimate the angles of the two targets under two distinct scenarios: the ideal condition and angular ambiguity. Under ideal conditions, estimation is conducted directly using the received signals. Incorporating polarization information mitigates the estimation results' sensitivity to relative phase. To counteract the challenges of PAN failure in angular ambiguity situations, the proposed PFCM adeptly resolves the two targets by reconstructing the four-channel signal, indicating its applicability across various relative target positions. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive performance analysis focusing on three critical aspects. As a result, two closely spaced targets can be resolved robustly and unambiguously with minimal complexity. Numerical simulations and experimental results are substantiated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A high-frequency (HF) surface-wave radar has been widely used in marine monitoring and vessel surveillance, among which compact ones, e.g., a crossed-loop/monopole antenna (CMA), are preferred in many scenarios for their low costs and easy maintenance. Relatively large error in the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation due to the small aperture involved is one major problem in such compact radars. To solve this problem, a biologically inspired DOA estimation method is proposed to improve the direction finding (DF) performance. The phase amplification mechanism of Ormia ochracea is imitated with a digital signal processor appended to the radar receiver. Then, the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is used to estimate the DOA. For a two-element array with a small spacing, simulation results show that the proposed Bio-MUSIC method is superior to the conventional MUSIC in DOA estimation, and the combination of cosine and sine loops offers significant advantages over that by using two monopoles in terms of both accuracy and stability over different look angles. Also, compared with the CMA, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is reduced by up to 56.99%. Experimental results demonstrate that, the total RMSEs of the ship coordinates obtained by Bio-MUSIC based on two cosine loops or one cosine loop plus one sine loop are reduced by up to 41.23% and are much less than the RMSEs obtained by MUSIC based on the CMA in most cases. Abstract:When the radar antenna spacing is larger than half wavelength, grating lobes appear in its antenna beam pattern. They could cause the ambiguity in the angle estimation of radar targets due to the similarity of amplitudes between grating lobes and the main lobe. To address such issue, this letter proposes a grating lobe suppression and angle estimation approach for sparse arrays by use of virtual antennas filling. It takes advantage of the distribution characteristics of grating lobes, and first obtains rough estimates of target angles. The least squares method is then employed to generate signals received by virtual antenna elements. Accordingly, the gaps between antenna elements of sparse array could be filled with those virtual ones to form an equivalent uniform full array. Hence, it achieves the grating lobe suppression as well as accurate estimation of target angles. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify its effectiveness in different types of sparse arrays.

Abstract:Compared with the multisite radar, the monostatic radar has the disadvantages of a single viewing angle and less available information. In the presence of main-lobe jamming, the monostatic radar has the problems of poor antijamming effect and difficulty in achieving target detection. To solve the above problems, the radar signal processing method and data fusion method are combined in this article. A main-lobe jamming suppression method for phased array (PA) netted radar based on the maximum signal-to-noise ratio blind source separation (MSNR-BSS) is proposed. First, the received signals of a monostatic PA radar are separated into target signals and jamming signals by the MSNR-BSS method. Second, channel accumulation, pulse compression, and constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) target detection are performed on the separated signal channels to obtain the target radial distance. Finally, the data fusion theory of three global orientations (TGOs) is employed to determine the target spatial position. Simulation experiments evaluate the performance of main-lobe jamming suppression and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. In the presence of noise amplitude modulation (NAM) jamming or smeared spectrum (SMSP) jamming (JNR = 100 dB), the target positioning accuracy (TPA) of the proposed method is 6.613 or 6.596 m, respectively. Also, the peak-to-sidelobe level ratios (PSLRs) in the two jamming environments are approximately equal to −8 dB.
