Abstract:Computational electromagnetics (EM) as well as multiphysics (MP) methods remain very challenging tasks even with nowadays. This talk will give a brief outline from CEM to CMP. Further, their applications for solving various complex electromagnetic environmental effect problems will be addressed. In particular, main challenges in the development of MP algorithm will be indicated and key strategies for attacking them will also be demonstrated. This talk is provided for both research engineers and scientists who are active in CEM/MP studies and applications.

Abstract:While machine learning is revolutionizing every corner of modern technologies, we have been attempting to explore whether machine learning methods could be used in computational electromagnetic (CEM). In this paper, five efforts in line with this direction are reviewed. They include forward methods such as the method of moments (MoM) solved by the artificial neural network training process, FDTD PML (perfectly matched layer) using the hyperbolic tangent basis function (HTBF), etc. There are also inverse problems that use the deep ConvNets for the effective source reconstruction and subwavelength imaging in the far-field. Benchmarks are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of all explorations. The reviewed works are attempting to open the new path for employing machine learning in the modern CEM.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the research results in computational electromagnetis at the Center of Computational Electromagnetics of Southeast University. It includes the typical achievements in absorbing boundary conditions, domain decomposition method, measured equation of invariance, Green's functions, electromagnetic imaging, the method of lines, the functional methods and the numerical analysis of milimeter wave passive circuits, etc. The results can be served for civil and military applications such as microwave and millimeter wave communications, radar, navigation, geological prospecting and defense usage.

Abstract:A brief review of the early work,current research areas,and future development of computational electromagnetics in the computational electromagnetics laboratory(CEMLAB) at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China(UESTC) is described.The time-domain and frequency-domain numerical methods are developed to improve simulation efficiency while maintaining the same accuracy for transmission,radiation and scattering problems.The neural network with knowledge-based neurons and generalized transmission line equation techniques are adopted for electromagnetic modeling as CAD tools with high performance.Efficient electromagnetic optimization methods,such as jumping genes genetic algorithm and space mapping technique,are also proposed to optimize antennas and microwave passive components.

Abstract:Technological advancements have driven the humanity for the past five decades. In many of these technological advances, computational electromagnetics has played a major role. From the design of aeroplanes down to consumer electronics, the field of computational electromagnetics has been growing steadily in terms of maturity, complexity, as well as performance. However, innovation does not seem to slow down anytime soon. The dimension of technological devices continues to shrink down to nano scale. This also results in an ongoing research in the field of nano photonics to bring the speed of light down to the nano scale regime and integrate them with electronics. All these new advances demand a new and further development of current techniques for computational electromagnetics. In this paper, we will present some of our works that tackles the issue of computational electromagnetics as it is applied to nanoscale devices.

Abstract:The silicon based CMOS millimeter wave and THz ICs developed in the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves (SKLMMW), Southeast University, China, is reviewed in this invited talk. The millimeter wave ICs includes amplifiers, mixers, oscillators at Q, V and W band. The THz ICs are mainly focused on transmission lines and filter structure based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology. The design and performance of waveguide structures in silicon based CMOS and MEMs process are also presented.

Abstract:Researches on millimeter wave imaging in State Key Lab of Millimeter Waves are described. The researches mainly focus on the analysis and design of optical components or various lenses of imaging system. It is a base for getting good imaging quality. The field distribution in focal space of various lens including refractive lens and diffractive lens are analyzed and computed to show their imaging performance. The approaches to reduce the aberration of lens and expand the field-of-view of imaging system are studied and ameliorative results are obtained. Imaging experiment of concealed object is carried out to show the imaging ability of diffractive lens.

Abstract:Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) techniques have become an indispensable tool in efficient EM modeling, analysis and design process. EM subsurface scattering is a broad field of research with varying degree of complexity. Due level of the obscurity involved in the subsurface scattering investigation, it is therefore considered imperative to explore this problem area of EM for better insight through CEM-based study and models. In this paper, frequency domain CEM techniques are studied which have been tested to provide solution for subsurface scattering problems in terrestrial environments. The development of CEM methods for comparatively more complex problems of scattering from embedded non-metallic inhomogeneity in lossy, rough and layered media remains the focus of this article. The objective here is to provide an overview of CEM development by selecting few examples from the wide area of subsurface EM scattering.

Abstract:We have already launched certain teaching reform that we combined the course Theory of Electromagnetic Field (including the antenna) and the course Microwave and Optical Guided Wave Technology into a single course, Electromagnetic Fields and Electromagnetic Wave. Although the depth and coverage of the course has increased, the course hours have been compressed. This requires teachers to make greater efforts and take more effective measures. So we have focused on three aspects of EM teaching. We have seized the keys of vector field theory to clear students' obstacles about mathematics, made students to understand the rigorous logic system of electromagnetic theory which deeply enhances the students' sense of innovation, and combined the theories with practical applications to improve their capabilities of applying knowledge and solving engineering problems.

Abstract:The international conference on computation of electromagnetic fields, COMPUMAG, is one of the most important worldwide serial conferences in the area of computational electromagnetics. A survey of the 18th COMPUMAG conference held in Sydney from July 12 to 15, 2011, is given in this paper, in which the research subjects, the numbers of papers by the authors from different countries and regions are included. According to the situation of the academic exchange in the conference, the focuses and new trend in current researches of this area were analyzed, especially for the computation of industry problems and the computation in large scale. According to the information of scores, acceptance and comments for the two-page papers in the review process, a set of statistics was made. Based on the statistic data, the quantities and qualities of the papers by Chinese authors are analyzed. Besides, on the basis of the statistical data, the authors of this paper present their opinions on some inadequacies about the quality of the conference papers submitted by Chinese authors, and indicate the task that should be undertaken from now on.

Abstract:A refinement algorithm for electromagnetic field computations using a combination of finite element and meshless methods is introduced. Bridging scales are used to separate the finite element and meshless shape functions to make the refinement hierarchical and to uphold the mathematical properties such as consistency and linear independence for all the bases. To facilitate the application of the proposed algorithm, details about the node addition, requirements for the node distribution, and relationships between the finite element and meshless shape functions, as well as the determination of the stop criterion are also fully addressed. Primary numerical results are reported to demonstrate and validate the applicability and advantages of the proposed algorithm over traditional ones.

Abstract:A software for calculating electromagnetic scattering and radiation for arbitrary complex targets is developed based on several self-developed algorithms such as method of moment (MoM), fast multipole method (FMM), physical optics (PO) algorithm, shooting bouncing ray (SBR) and MoM-PO hybrid method. The complete and diverse built-in optional algorithms ensure that the software has superior computing performance and strong universality. Not only providing comprehensive and diversified multiple components geometry modeling, mesh processing and other pre-processing functions, it also provides rich post-processing functions such as 2D display and 3D visualization of RCS or ISAR results. Moreover, the convenient open interface supports secondary development to extend software functions. In this paper, the developed software programmed by C++ has been introduced with some simulation examples to demonstrate the accuracy.(Abstract)
