Abstract:Ever since the deployment of the first-generation of mobile telecommunications, wireless communication technology has evolved at a dramatically fast pace over the past four decades. The upcoming fifth-generation (5G) holds a great promise in providing an ultra-fast data rate, a very low latency, and a significantly improved spectral efficiency by exploiting the millimeter-wave spectrum for the first time in mobile communication infrastructures. In the years beyond 2030, newly emerged data-hungry applications and the greatly expanded wireless network will call for the sixth-generation (6G) communication that represents a significant upgrade from the 5G network covering almost the entire surface of the earth and the near outer space. In both the 5G and future 6G networks, millimeter-wave technologies will play an important role in accomplishing the envisioned network performance and communication tasks. In this paper, the relevant millimeter-wave enabling technologies are reviewed: they include the recent developments on the system architectures of active beamforming arrays, beamforming integrated circuits, antennas for base stations and user terminals, system measurement and calibration, and channel characterization. The requirements of each part for future 6G communications are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Computational electromagnetics (EM) as well as multiphysics (MP) methods remain very challenging tasks even with nowadays. This talk will give a brief outline from CEM to CMP. Further, their applications for solving various complex electromagnetic environmental effect problems will be addressed. In particular, main challenges in the development of MP algorithm will be indicated and key strategies for attacking them will also be demonstrated. This talk is provided for both research engineers and scientists who are active in CEM/MP studies and applications.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands, which offer abundant underutilized spectral resources, have been explored and exploited in the past several years to meet the requirements of emerging wireless services highlighted by high data rates, ultrareliability, and ultralow delivery latency. Yet, the unique characteristics of mmWave, e.g., continuous wide bandwidth, large path, and penetration losses, along with hardware constraints, call for innovative technologies for mmWave communication. Recently, an extensive amount of work on mmWave communication has been carried out by researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry, and various technologies have been developed for mmWave communication systems to fulfill the full potential of mmWave frequency bands. In this article, we present a comprehensive survey of the standardization of mmWave communication, the latest progress and outcomes of the research on mmWave communication technologies, and the emerging applications of mmWave communication. In particular, we provide a timely and in-depth summary of the state-of-the-art technology specifications of mmWave communication with an emphasis on the physical (PHY) layer. Then, we elaborate on a number of well-established or promising antenna architectures in mmWave communication systems and investigate the enabling PHY layer transmission technologies. Finally, we show some existing and emerging applications of mmWave communication and discuss the potential open research issues.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of mobile data demand, the fifth generation (5G) mobile network would exploit the enormous amount of spectrum in the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to greatly increase communication capacity. There are fundamental differences between mmWave communications and existing other communication systems, in terms of high propagation loss, directivity, and sensitivity to blockage. These characteristics of mmWave communications pose several challenges to fully exploit the potential of mmWave communications, including integrated circuits and system design, interference management, spatial reuse, anti-blockage, and dynamics control. To address these challenges, we carry out a survey of existing solutions and standards, and propose design guidelines in architectures and protocols for mmWave communications. We also discuss the potential applications of mmWave communications in the 5G network, including the small cell access, the cellular access, and the wireless backhaul. Finally, we discuss relevant open research issues including the new physical layer technology, software-defined network architecture, measurements of network state information, efficient control mechanisms, and heterogeneous networking, which should be further investigated to facilitate the deployment of mmWave communication systems in the future 5G networks.

Abstract:In this article, we address the timely topic of cellular bistatic simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with specific focus on end-to-end processing solutions, from raw I/Q samples, via channel parameter estimation to user equipment (UE) and landmark location information in millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks, with minimal prior knowledge. Firstly, we propose a new multipath channel parameter estimation solution that operates directly with beam reference signal received power (BRSRP) measurements, alleviating the need to know the true antenna beam-patterns or the underlying beamforming weights. Additionally, the method has built-in robustness against unavoidable antenna sidelobes. Secondly, we propose new snapshot SLAM algorithms that have increased robustness and identifiability compared to prior art, in practical built environments with complex clutter and multi-bounce propagation scenarios, and do not rely on any a priori motion model. The performance of the proposed methods is assessed at the 60 GHz mmWave band, via both realistic ray-tracing evaluations as well as true experimental measurements, in an indoor environment. A wide set of offered results demonstrate the improved performance, compared to the relevant prior art, in terms of the channel parameter estimation as well as the end-to-end SLAM performance. Finally, the article provides the measured 60 GHz data openly available for the research community, facilitating results reproducibility as well as further algorithm development.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have recently attracted large research interest, since the huge available bandwidth can potentially lead to rates of multiple Gbps (gigabit per second) per user. Though mmWave can be readily used in stationary scenarios such as indoor hotspots or backhaul, it is challenging to use mmWave in mobile networks, where the transmitting/receiving nodes may be moving, channels may have a complicated structure, and the coordination among multiple nodes is difficult. To fully exploit the high potential rates of mmWave in mobile networks, lots of technical problems must be addressed. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of mmWave communications for future mobile networks (5G and beyond). We first summarize the recent channel measurement campaigns and modeling results. Then, we discuss in detail recent progresses in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) transceiver design for mmWave communications. After that, we provide an overview of the solution for multiple access and backhauling, followed by analysis of coverage and connectivity. Finally, the progresses in the standardization and deployment of mmWave for mobile networks are discussed.

Abstract:As the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system is being commercialized, extensive studies on the evolution of 5G and sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems have been conducted. Future mobile communication systems are evidently evolving toward a more intelligent and software-reconfigurable functionality paradigm that can provide ubiquitous communication, as well as sense, control, and optimize wireless environments. Thus, integrating communication and localization using the highly directional transmission characteristics of millimeter waves (mmWaves) is a promising route. This approach not only expands the localization capabilities of a communication system but also provides new concepts and opportunities to enhance communication. In this paper, we explain the integrated communication and localization in mmWave systems, in which these processes share the same set of hardware architecture and algorithms. We also provide an overview of the key enabling technologies and the basic knowledge on localization. Then, we provide two promising directions for studies on localization with an extremely large antenna array and model-based (or model-driven) neural networks. We also discuss a comprehensive guidance for location-assisted mmWave communications in terms of channel estimation, channel state information feedback, beam tracking, synchronization, interference control, resource allocation, and user selection. Finally, we outline the future trends on the mutual assistance and enhancement of communication and localization in integrated systems.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication technology offers a potential and promising solution to support 5G and B5G wireless networks in dynamic scenarios and applications. However, mobility introduces many challenges as well as opportunities to mmWave applications. To address these problems, we conduct a survey of the opportunities and technologies to support mmWave communications in mobile scenarios. Firstly, we summarize the mobile scenarios where mmWave communications are exploited, including indoor wireless local area network (WLAN) or wireless personal area network (WPAN), cellular access, vehicle-to-everything (V2X), high speed train (HST), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the new space-air-ground-sea communication scenarios. Then, to address users' mobility impact on the system performance in different application scenarios, we introduce several representative mobility models in mmWave systems, including human mobility, vehicular mobility, high speed train mobility and ship mobility. Next we survey the key challenges and existing solutions to mmWave applications, such as channel modeling, channel estimation, anti-blockage, and capacity improvement. Lastly, we discuss the open issues concerning mobility-aware mmWave communications that deserve further investigation. In particular, we highlight future heterogeneous mobile networks, dynamic resource management, artificial intelligence (AI) for mobility and integration of geographical information, deployment of large intelligent surface and reconfigurable antenna technology, and finally, the evolution to Terahertz (THz) communications.

Abstract:Recently, a considerable research interest has grown up in the millimetre wave wireless system as the most promising technologies in the next generation communication. Since high-frequency channels of the millimetre wave are easily attenuated in space, beamforming technology relying on the massive multi-input-multi-output system is introduced to transmit the millimetre wave in a very narrow directional beam, so as to greatly improve the transmit efficiency. Then a challenging problem lies in that how to optimise the overall throughput by allocating the antenna resources to different mobile users in the massive MIMO antenna system. In this study, the authors handle such a difficult problem in two different cases. They first begin with the one-direction case, i.e. all sub-arrays are deployed in several parallel rows along the edge of a rectangle antenna array. They decompose the problem and solve it gradually. Then they generalise the authors' result to the two-dimensional case, where the sub-arrays can be deployed in orthogonal directions. They apply the similar scheme, decompose the problem and solve each sub-problem progressively. Both NP-hard problems are solved with time efficient approximation algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in different cases.

Abstract:This paper presents an introduction to the researches in microwave photonics based packages and its application, a 973 project (No. 2012CB315600), which focuses on addressing new requirements for millimeter wave (MMW) system to work with higher frequency, wider bandwidth, larger dynamic range and longer distance of signal distribution. Its key scientific problems, main research contents and objectives are briefed, and some latest achievements by the project team, including generation of linear frequency modulation wave (LFMW), tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with lower phase noise, reconfigurable filter with higher Q value, time delay line with wider frequency range, down conversion with gain, and local oscillator (LO) transmission with stable phase, are introduced briefly.

Abstract:In recent years, the high frequency millimeter-wave 5G has been widely studied in the communication industry.Unlike the traditional low frequency communication under 6 GHz, the millimeter-wave 5G wireless signal transmission has the characteristics of large path loss, easy to be affected by atmosphere and rain, and poor diffraction ability.In this paper, the transmission characteristics of millimeter-wave 5G wireless signals will be discussed from the aspects of line-of-sight propagation, atmospheric attenuation and rainfall attenuation, which will provide important reference for future research.

Abstract:Recently, the majority of the countries have announced deployment of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication in a variety of application areas. In the meanwhile, few academic institutions and industries have allocated funds to start the intense research and take on the challenge of the sixth generation (6G). Specifically, this study reviews the progress of the wireless generations and the advancement of the important millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications in the face of 5G communications. The main focus of this paper is based on the study of mmWave technology, its advantages and disadvantages, followed by the predominant applications used in different mmWave bands. Moreover, the investigation has mainly focused on radar systems, radio communication, radiometry, atmospheric sensing, and satellite imagery. MmWave applications are playing an important role in 5G communication. It has a great opportunity to embark on such applications in the upcoming 6G communication. However, there is still room for fundamental improvements on the radio and the network to form new applications.

Abstract:In the past ten years, there have been tremendous research progresses on massive MIMO systems, most of which stand from the communications viewpoint. A new trend to investigate massive MIMO, especially for the sparse scenario like millimeter wave (mmWave) transmission, is to re-build the transceiver design from array signal processing viewpoint that could deeply exploit the half-wavelength array and provide enhanced performances in many aspects. For example, the high dimensional channel could be decomposed into small amount of physical parameters, e.g., angle of arrival (AoA), angle of departure (AoD), multi-path delay, Doppler shift, etc. As a consequence, transceiver techniques like synchronization, channel estimation, beamforming, precoding, multi-user access, etc., can be re-shaped with these physical parameters, as opposed to those designed directly with channel state information (CSI). Interestingly, parameters like AoA/AoD and multi-path delay are frequency insensitive and thus can be used to guide the downlink transmission from uplink training even for FDD systems. Moreover, some phenomena of massive MIMO that were vaguely revealed previously can be better explained now with array signal processing, e.g., the beam squint effect. In all, the target of this paper is to present an overview of recent progress on merging array signal processing into massive MIMO communications as well as its promising future directions.
CmWave and Sub-THz: Key Radio Enablers and Complementary Spectrum for 6G

Abstract:Sixth-generation (6G) networks are poised to revolutionize communication by exploring alternative spectrum options, aiming to capitalize on strengths while mitigating limitations in current fifth-generation (5G) spectrum. This paper explores the potential opportunities and emerging trends for cmWave and sub-THz spectra as key radio enablers. This paper poses and answers three key questions regarding motivation of additional spectrum to explore the strategic implementation and benefits of cmWave and sub-THz spectra. Also, we show using case studies how these complementary spectrum bands will enable new applications in 6G, such as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), re-configurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and non-terrestrial networks (NTN). Numerical simulations reveal that the ISAC performance of cmWave and sub-THz spectra outperforms that of existing 5G spectrum, including sub-6 GHz and mmWave. Additionally, we illustrate the effective interplay between RIS and NTN to counteract the effects of high attenuation at sub-THz frequencies. Finally, ongoing standardization endeavors, challenges and promising directions are elucidated for these complementary spectrum bands.

Abstract:Millimeter wave is one of the main frequency bands of 5G. At present, the commercial use of millimeter wave has become a hot spot in the communication industry of various countries. This paper introduces the distribution of 5G millimeter wave spectrum in various countries and the latest status of 3GPP millimeter wave standard. The advantages and disadvantages of millimeter wave are very prominent, and the millimeter wave industry is facing severe challenges, especially in millimeter wave hardware devices. 5G millimeter wave not only supports non independent networking, but also supports independent networking. At present, the mainstream is non independent networking, followed by independent networking. The bandwidth and data download rate of millimeter wave is much higher than that of 5G sub-6. Millimeter wave is more revolutionary for 5G technology. Millimeter wave will become a new field supporting 5G’s long-term hot application.
