Abstract:A new scheme of optical rectification (OR) of femtosecond laser pulses in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, which generates high energy and bandwidth tunable multicycle THz pulses, is proposed and demonstrated. We show that the number of the oscillation cycles of the THz electric field and therefore bandwidth of generated THz spectrum can easily and smoothly be tuned from a few tens of GHz to a few THz by changing the pump optical spot size on PPLN crystal. The minimal bandwidth is 17 GHz that is smallest ever of reported in scheme of THz generation by OR at room temperature. Similar to the case of Cherenkov-type OR in single-domain LiNbO3, the spectrum of THz generation extends from 0.1 THz to 3 THz when laser beam is focused to a size close to half-period of PPLN structure. The energy spectral density of narrowband THz generation is almost independent of the bandwidth and is typically 220 nJ/THz for similar to 1 W pump power at 1 kHz repetition rate. Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:A new scheme of optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, which generates high energy and linewidth tunable multicycle terahertz (THz) pulses, is analyzed. The developed simple theoretical model allows investigating the generated THz spectrum and its dependence on spot size of the pump beam. It is shown that the transformation of THz radiation from narrowband to broadband is possible by simply reducing the pump beam size. The temporal waveform and energy of the multicycle THz pulses were calculated as well. It is shown that THz energy is inversely proportional to the pump beam size r y , whereas energy spectral density is independent of r y . The efficiency of optical-to-THz energy conversion for pump pulse energy of 1 mJ is estimated to be 0.8 × 10 −4 . The possibility of tuning the generation frequency by changing the direction of the pump beam propagation is analyzed.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate photonic generation and de-chirp processing of terahertz (THz) linear-frequency-modulated (LFM) signals using coherent photonic super-heterodyne based on frequency quadrupling and photo mixing. In the experiment, a 340-380-GHz LFM signal with 40-GHz bandwidth is successfully generated with a temporal period of 1 mu s. As a result, a range resolution of 5 mm is successfully enabled, which is close to the theoretical limit. Benefited from photonic de-chirp processing, the requirements of receiving instantaneous bandwidth and sampling rate are reduced. Moreover, the proposed scheme features high stability, and the measured performance of the system has not deteriorated within 2 hours in the experiment. Therefore, our proposed system has a great potential in THz ranging and imaging applications.

Abstract:In this letter, a scheme for generating terahertz (THz) linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals with large time-bandwidth product (TBWP) is experimentally demonstrated based on photonic quadruple frequency and photomixing. Benefited from the photonic down-conversion and de-chirping, the requirement of instantaneous bandwidth and sampling rate can be greatly relaxed. We successfully generate LFM signals with a bandwidth of 40 GHz in the THz band above 300 GHz, and a TBWP up to 40,000. The measured pulse compression ratio (PCR) of 45,455 indicates a great potential in improving range resolution. In addition, the generated signals can also potentially enable very high cross-range resolution in radar sensing and imaging.

Abstract:Below, we theoretically study the generation of narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation by optical rectification in an artificial periodically poled lithium niobate (LN) crystal with a wide aperture. The latter is formed by placing a multi-slit phase mask in front of a conventional (single-domain) LN crystal. It is shown that the bandwidth of THz generation can be varied over a wide range by changing the linear size of the pump beam in the crystal. In addition, it is possible to tune up the generation frequency in the range of 0.4–0.8 THz by building a mask image in the crystal with different magnifications. According to estimates, the energy of narrowband THz pulses at a frequency of 0.5 THz in a stoichiometric LN crystal at a temperature of 100 K is about 265 μJ for a pump pulse energy of 220 mJ.

Abstract:A simple approach to generate high energy, frequency and bandwidth tunable multicycle THz pulses by optical rectification (OR) of spatially shaped femtosecond laser pulses in the lithium niobate (LN) crystal is proposed and demonstrated. A one dimensional binary shadow mask is used as a laser beam shaper. By building the mask's image in the bulk LN crystal with various demagnifications, the frequency of THz generation was tuned in the range of 0.3 - 1.2 THz. There exist also an opportunity to tune the bandwidth of THz generation from 20 GHz to approximately 1 THz by changing the optical beam size on the crystal. The energy spectral density of narrowband THz generation is almost independent of the bandwidth and is typically 0.18 mu J/THz for similar to 1 W pump power at 1 kHz repetition rate. Abstract:A simple photonic scheme for generation of linear frequency modulated (LFM) THz pulses with large bandwidth is experimentally demonstrated based on an optical interferometer. We successfully generate linearly chirped THz pulses centered at 350 GHz, and featuring a bandwidth in excess of 40 GHz. The tunability of the THz center frequency is also investigated in the experiment. The time bandwidth product (TBWP) of the generated THz pulses is up to 340, which will have a potential in implementing high resolution radar sensing and imaging.

Abstract:We present a simple scheme of narrowband terahertz (THz) generation by optical rectification in the lithium niobate crystal covered by a binary phase mask. It is shown that a single-domain crystal illumination by spatiotemporal shaped fs-laser pulses is equivalent to the formation of a transversally patterned, quasi-phase-matching structure. Decrease of the optical beam size on the mask leads to an increase of the THz-wave linewidth from 17 GHz to a few THz. The frequency of the generation was tuned in the range of 0.4-1.0 THz by building images of the mask in the crystal with various magnifications. Application results of the presented THz source for measuring transmittance of the superconducting NbN thin film in the 4.2-15 K temperature range are also presented. Abstract:Broadband light sources emitting in the terahertz spectral range are highly desired for applications such as noninvasive imaging and spectroscopy. Conventionally, THz pulses are generated by optical rectification in bulk nonlinear crystals with millimetre thickness, with the bandwidth limited by the phase-matching condition. Here we demonstrate broadband THz emission via surface optical rectification from a simple, commercially available 19 nm-thick indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film. We show an enhancement of the generated THz signal when the pump laser is tuned around the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region of ITO due to the pump laser field enhancement associated with the ENZ effect. The bandwidth of the THz signal generated from the ITO film can be over 3 THz, unrestricted by the phase-matching condition. This work offers a new possibility for broadband THz generation in a subwavelength thin film made of an ENZ material, with emerging physics not found in existing nonlinear crystals.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic scheme based on frequency doubling and photo-mixing to generate dual-chirp signals in the terahertz (THz) band. A broadband dual-chirp THz signal with 28 GHz bandwidth, ranging from 364 GHz to 392 GHz, is successfully generated in the proof-of-concept experiment, resulting in a chirp rate of 0.028 GHz/ns for both up chirp and down chirp signals. THz dual-chirp signals featuring a large bandwidth are beneficial to enable high resolution and high accuracy by mitigating the range measurement error induced by the range-Doppler coupling effect. Therefore, the proposed system is expected to have a great potential for future THz radar applications.

Abstract:We have achieved broadband parametric generation by using a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO(3) crystal as frequency converter. Tuning wavelength rang from 0.609 microm to 5.208 microm, which covered three quasi-phase-matching processes, was obtained by means of changing the pump wavelength from 0.530 microm to 1.184 microm. The experiment results are in good agreement with theory. The maximum conversion efficiency is 62% with a 10 Hz-5 ns pump source, at the average pump power of 0.5 mW. Our results exhibit a possible application of quasi-periodic superlattice in laser technology.

Abstract:We present in this Letter the experimental generation of linear frequency modulated (LFM) terahertz pulses with large bandwidths by using an optical interferometer-based photonic scheme and cutting-edge terahertz transceiver technology. The LFM pulses exhibiting a bandwidth in excess of 60 GHz centered at 350 GHz are successfully generated in the experiment, which represents the first demonstration of large time-bandwidth products (TBWPs) in the terahertz region above 300 GHz, to the best of our knowledge. The achieved TBWP of up to 527 has great potential in many prospective applications such as high-resolution radar sensing and imaging.

Abstract:A new type of highly birefringent polyethylene rectangular lattice photonic crystal fiber (RLPCF) was investigated. This PCF can operate at single-polarization single-mode (SPSM). By changing the structure parameters of the RLPCF, the mode index of the two linearly polarized principal states can be designed. Results show that the PCF has higher birefringence than regular RLPCF. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate. This PCF is an effective component for some THz systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a highly efficient method for the generation of a high-field terahertz (THz) pulse train via optical rectification (OR) in congruent lithium niobate (LN) crystals driven by temporally shaped laser pulses. A narrowband THz pulse has been successfully achieved with sub-percent level conversion efficiency and multi MV/cm peak field at 0.26 THz. For the single-cycle THz generation, we achieved a THz pulse with 373-μJ energy in a LN crystal excited by a 100-mJ laser pulse at room temperature. The conversion efficiency is further improved to 0.77 % pumped by a 20-mJ laser pulse with a smaller pump beam size (6 mm in horizontal and 15 mm in vertical). This method holds great potential for generating mJ-level narrow-band THz pulse trains, which may have a major impact in mJ-scale applications like terahertz-based accelerators and light sources.

Abstract:We demonstrate record conversion efficiencies of up to 0.9 percent for narrowband (1 percent relative bandwidth) THz generation by strongly-cascaded difference frequency generation. These results are achieved using a novel laser source, customized for high efficiencies, with two narrow spectral lines of variable separation and pulse duration (250 ps). THz generation in 5 percent MgO doped PPLN crystals of varying poling period was explored at cryogenic and room temperature operation as well as different crystal lengths. This work addresses an increasing demand for high-field THz pulses which has, up to now, been largely limited by low optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies.

Abstract:In this study, we propose the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) radiation from a liquid crystal with large birefringence in the THz range, pumped by 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses based on optical rectification. Our measurements revealed that the THz amplitude depends on the orientation of the liquid crystal relative to the polarization of the femtosecond pump. Additionally, it was found that the THz peak intensity is linearly dependent on the pump fluence. Furthermore, an elliptically polarized THz wave pattern was observed. The results may lead to a new type of tunable THz source.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth terahertz (THz) generation based on difference frequency generation pumped by an all-fiber parametric light source is reported. A pulse source with an ultra-narrow bandwidth is built up as the pump seed source for the succeeding optical parametric amplification (OPA). A pair of phase-conjugated beams is generated as the seed light through all-fiber OPA. The amplified phase-conjugated light beams are injected into 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS) to stimulate the emission of terahertz radiation. A THz source with linewidth less than 512 MHz at 1.748 THz pumped by an all-fiber light source is achieved.
