Abstract:It is well known that Dold and Milnor manifolds give generators for the unoriented bordism algebra ${\frak{N}}_*$ over ${\Bbb{Z}}_2$. The purpose of this paper is to determine those Milnor manifolds which represent the same bordism classes in ${\frak{N}}_*$ as their Dold counterparts.

Abstract:We report a type of quasi-phase-matched (QPM) Cerenkov third-harmonic generation (CTHG) in a periodic-poled LiTaO3 waveguide. The CTHG results from a guided-to-guided second-harmonic generation cascaded with a guided-to-radiated sum-frequency generation (SFG) in the waveguide. In the guided-to-radiated SFG process, nonlinear interactions with participating and nonparticipating reciprocal vectors would lead to different CTHG radiations. In addition, the power and temperature detuning characters of QPM CTHG were studied. Theoretical predictions were in good agreement with experimental results. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A new scheme of optical rectification (OR) of femtosecond laser pulses in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, which generates high energy and bandwidth tunable multicycle THz pulses, is proposed and demonstrated. We show that the number of the oscillation cycles of the THz electric field and therefore bandwidth of generated THz spectrum can easily and smoothly be tuned from a few tens of GHz to a few THz by changing the pump optical spot size on PPLN crystal. The minimal bandwidth is 17 GHz that is smallest ever of reported in scheme of THz generation by OR at room temperature. Similar to the case of Cherenkov-type OR in single-domain LiNbO3, the spectrum of THz generation extends from 0.1 THz to 3 THz when laser beam is focused to a size close to half-period of PPLN structure. The energy spectral density of narrowband THz generation is almost independent of the bandwidth and is typically 220 nJ/THz for similar to 1 W pump power at 1 kHz repetition rate. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a compact, all-solid-state 532 nm semi-Gaussian laser beam (SGB) source based on a 1064 nm laser and a transversely varying periodically-poled LiTaO3 (TPPLT) crystal as the laser beam shaper as well as the nonlinear frequency converter. We have used the designed TPPLT crystal to obtain a neat 532nm SGB with the quality of QSGB=1:17.5 by a single-pass second harmonic generation. The dependence of the generated SGB quality on the designed TPPLT parameter and the potential applications of the neat SGB are also discussed.

Abstract:Injection-seeded terahertz (THz)-wave parametric generation (is-TPG) using a nonlinear optical crystal of MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:LiNbO3) has made it possible to obtain THz waves with high peak powers and narrow linewidths. To achieve stable THz-wave generation from the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal under strong excitation, the photorefractive effect in the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal would be crucial, which could be eliminated by using a longer pump wavelength than the conventional 1-μm spectral band. Here, we propose to use a 1.5-μm near-infrared (NIR), high-repetition-rate, sub-nanosecond laser source based on a unique Er,Yb:glass planar waveguide amplifier (PWA) as the pump source for the is-TPG using the MgO:LiNbO3 crystal. At a repetition rate of 25 kHz, the frequency tunability from 1.3 to 2.5 THz was obtained with a maximum THz-wave average output power of 0.14 mW at 1.77 THz.

Abstract:The theory of THz-wave generation (3.29 THz) via difference frequency generation (DFG) of near infrared radiations (1318.8 nm and 1338.2 nm) by a simultaneous dual-wavelength lasing (SDWL) of an Nd:YAG laser in slant-stripe-type MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) was presented. It is shown that the slant-stripe-type MgO:PPLN is capable of realizing the quasi-phase-matching in two perpendicular direction of optical and THz-wave propagation.

Abstract:We have achieved broadband parametric generation by using a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO(3) crystal as frequency converter. Tuning wavelength rang from 0.609 microm to 5.208 microm, which covered three quasi-phase-matching processes, was obtained by means of changing the pump wavelength from 0.530 microm to 1.184 microm. The experiment results are in good agreement with theory. The maximum conversion efficiency is 62% with a 10 Hz-5 ns pump source, at the average pump power of 0.5 mW. Our results exhibit a possible application of quasi-periodic superlattice in laser technology.

Abstract:We investigate nonlinear THz generation from lithium niobate films and crystals of different thicknesses by optical rectification of near-infrared femtosecond pulses. A comparison between numerical studies and polarization-resolved measurements of the generated THz signal reveals a 2 orders of magnitude enhancement in the nonlinear response compared to optical frequencies. We show that this enhancement is due to optical phonon modes at 4.5 and 7.45 THz and is most pronounced for films thinner than 2 μm where optical-to-THz conversion is not limited by self-absorption. These results shed new light on the employment of thin film lithium niobate platforms for the development of new integrated broadband THz emitters and detectors. This may also open the door for further control (e.g., polarization, directivity, and spectral selectivity) of the process in nanophotonic structures, such as nanowires and metasurfaces, realized in the thin film platform. We illustrate this potential by numerically investigating optical-to-THz conversion driven by localized surface phonon–polariton resonances in sub-wavelength lithium niobate rods.

Abstract:We present a theoretical research concerning simultaneous generation of two terahertz (THz) waves with bulk LiNbO3 and four THz waves with periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) by coupled optical parametric generation (COPG). First, we investigate collinear phase matching of COPG generating two orthogonally polarized THz waves with two types of phase matching of o = e + e and o = e + o with bulk LiNbO3. The two orthogonally polarized THz waves are generated from stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) with A1 and E symmetric transverse optical (TO) modes in bulk LiNbO3, respectively. Then, we find that perturbations of phase mismatch for o = e + e and o = e + o can be compensated by a same grating vector of PPLN. As a result, four THz waves are simultaneously generated with a PPLN crystal and a pump laser. We calculate third-order nonlinear optical coefficients of o = e + o generating THz waves from E symmetric TO modes. The intensities of four THz waves are calculated by solving coupled wave equations. The calculation results demonstrate that the COPG generating four THz waves have high photon conversion efficiencies.

Analysis of Linewidth Tunable Terahertz Wave Generation in Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate

Abstract:A new scheme of optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, which generates high energy and linewidth tunable multicycle terahertz (THz) pulses, is analyzed. The developed simple theoretical model allows investigating the generated THz spectrum and its dependence on spot size of the pump beam. It is shown that the transformation of THz radiation from narrowband to broadband is possible by simply reducing the pump beam size. The temporal waveform and energy of the multicycle THz pulses were calculated as well. It is shown that THz energy is inversely proportional to the pump beam size r y , whereas energy spectral density is independent of r y . The efficiency of optical-to-THz energy conversion for pump pulse energy of 1 mJ is estimated to be 0.8 × 10 −4 . The possibility of tuning the generation frequency by changing the direction of the pump beam propagation is analyzed.
Investigation of ultra-broadband terahertz generation from sub-wavelength lithium niobate waveguides excited by few-cycle femtosecond laser pulses

Abstract:The generation of coherent, ultra-broadband terahertz (THz) radiation pulses spanning more than a few octaves is vital to understanding the ultrafast response of elementary excitations, molecules, nanostructures, materials, and explore device functionality across a wide spectrum. In this work, we use 2D finite-difference time-domain simulations to show that ultra-broadband (0.18-106 THz) Cherenkov radiation can be produced from SiO2:MgO-LiNbO3:SiO2 waveguides having core dimensions that are sub-wavelength with respect to the optical pump pulse being guided. These sub-wavelength core dimensions allow the ultra-broad Cherenkov radiation to be emitted at an angle between 47.2° and 47.5° (dictated by the Si cladding layer dispersion), making these waveguide structures superior to the THz generation arrangements in bulk MgO-LiNbO3 crystals. When excited by a 7 fs, 780 nm laser pulse having an energy of 2 nJ, a 300 µm-long waveguide with transverse core dimensions of 500 nm × 2 mm can generate a sub-ps, kV/cm electric field pulse. Unlike THz pulse generation in bulk MgO-LiNbO3 crystals, having sub-wavelength core dimensions reduce the absorption from the MgO-LiNbO3 reststrahlen bands. These sub-wavelength SiO2:MgO-LiNbO3:SiO2 waveguides are ideal for on-chip applications that require ultra-broadband, compact THz sources.
Efficient Generation of a High-Field Terahertz Pulse Train in Bulk Lithium Niobate Crystals by Optical Rectification.

Abstract:We demonstrate a highly efficient method for the generation of a high-field terahertz (THz) pulse train via optical rectification (OR) in congruent lithium niobate (LN) crystals driven by temporally shaped laser pulses. A narrowband THz pulse has been successfully achieved with sub-percent level conversion efficiency and multi MV/cm peak field at 0.26 THz. For the single-cycle THz generation, we achieved a THz pulse with 373-μJ energy in a LN crystal excited by a 100-mJ laser pulse at room temperature. The conversion efficiency is further improved to 0.77 % pumped by a 20-mJ laser pulse with a smaller pump beam size (6 mm in horizontal and 15 mm in vertical). This method holds great potential for generating mJ-level narrow-band THz pulse trains, which may have a major impact in mJ-scale applications like terahertz-based accelerators and light sources.

Abstract:In this study, we propose the generation of broadband terahertz (THz) radiation from a liquid crystal with large birefringence in the THz range, pumped by 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses based on optical rectification. Our measurements revealed that the THz amplitude depends on the orientation of the liquid crystal relative to the polarization of the femtosecond pump. Additionally, it was found that the THz peak intensity is linearly dependent on the pump fluence. Furthermore, an elliptically polarized THz wave pattern was observed. The results may lead to a new type of tunable THz source.
Simultaneous Second-Harmonic, Sum-Frequency Generation and Stimulated Raman Scattering in MgO:PPLN

Abstract:In this study, simultaneous second-harmonic generation (SHG), sum frequency generation (SFG), and Raman conversion based on MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) for multi-wavelength generation is demonstrated. The approach used is based on a single MgO:PPLN crystal poled with a uniform period of 10.2 µm that phase matches SHG and SFG, simultaneously. Using a simplified double-pass geometry, up to 0.8 W of blue light at 487 nm is achieved by a frequency-doubling 974 nm laser diode pump, and 0.5 W of orange light at 598 nm is generated by frequency mixing 974 nm pump with C-band (1527⁻1565 nm) tunable laser source. At high pump powers of the 974 nm laser source, other unexpected peaks at 437, 536, 756, 815 and 1038 nm were observed, of which the 1038 nm line is due to Stimulated Raman Scattering within the MgO:PPLN crystal. The resulting multi-wavelength light source may find a wide range of applications in biomedicine and basic research.
Multicycle terahertz pulse generation by optical rectification in LiNbO$_3$, LiTaO$_3$, and BBO crystals

Abstract:We report multicycle, narrowband, terahertz radiation at 14.8 THz produced by phase-matched optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses in bulk lithium niobate (LiNbO$_3$) crystals. Our experiment and simulation show that the output terahertz energy greatly enhances when the input laser pulse is highly chirped, contrary to a common optical rectification process. We find this abnormal behavior is attributed to a linear electro-optic (or Pockels) effect, in which the laser pulse propagating in LiNbO$_3$ is modulated by the terahertz field it produces, and this in turn drives optical rectification more effectively to produce the terahertz field. This resonant cascading effect can greatly increase terahertz conversion efficiencies when the input laser pulse is properly pre-chirped with additional third order dispersion. We also observe similar multicycle terahertz emission from lithium tantalate (LiTaO$_3$) at 14 THz and barium borate (BBO) at 7 THz, 10.6 THz, and 14.6 THz, all produced by narrowband phase-matched optical rectification.

Abstract:The interactions between electromagnetic wave and photonic quasicrystals are investigated. A terahertz (THz) source with multifrequency modes in an optical LiTaO3 superlattice produced by quasiperiodic (Fibonacci) domain-inverted ferroelectric material is demonstrated experimentally. Using the canonical pump-probe experimental technique, THz radiations in both forward and backward propagations are in-situ detected simultaneously. Four pronounced THz frequencies at 1.18, 0.78, 0.59 and 0.37 THz in Fourier transform spectrum are observed. The physical properties of THz waves inside quasiperiodic superlattice are discussed. Abstract:A periodically-poled LiNbO 3 (PPLN) crystal features space-dependent second-order nonlinear coefficients, which is one of the most important materials to effectively control nonlinear optical interactions through quasi-phase matching(QPM). By using electric-field poling method, 1D and 2D PPLN crystals have been successfully fabricated for laser frequency conversion, quantum light sources, nonlinear beam shaping and nonlinear optical imaging. Recently, femtosecond laser engineering technique is utilized to prepare 3D domain structures inside LiNbO 3 crystal, which provides a promising platform to control nonlinear interacting waves in 3D configuration. After 40 years of developments, PPLN crystals still have exciting prospects in fundamental researches and practical applications for integrated photonic chip, quantum information processing,and so on.

Abstract:A simple approach to generate high energy, frequency and bandwidth tunable multicycle THz pulses by optical rectification (OR) of spatially shaped femtosecond laser pulses in the lithium niobate (LN) crystal is proposed and demonstrated. A one dimensional binary shadow mask is used as a laser beam shaper. By building the mask's image in the bulk LN crystal with various demagnifications, the frequency of THz generation was tuned in the range of 0.3 - 1.2 THz. There exist also an opportunity to tune the bandwidth of THz generation from 20 GHz to approximately 1 THz by changing the optical beam size on the crystal. The energy spectral density of narrowband THz generation is almost independent of the bandwidth and is typically 0.18 mu J/THz for similar to 1 W pump power at 1 kHz repetition rate. Abstract:Theoretical and experimental investigation of two-stage optical parametric generator based on magnesium oxide doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) crystal and optical parametric amplifier based on lithium triborate (LBO) crystal is presented. The first stage crystal was pumped by the subnanosecond fundamental harmonic at 1064 nm wavelength. In the theoretical description, the input signal and idler photons are described by the quantum model and their further amplification is tracked by simulating the nonlinear coupling equations. Such description allows the analysis of pulsed beam evolution during the propagation in the nonlinear crystal under strong pump depletion regime. The second stage crystal was seeded by the output signal wave of the first stage and pumped by the third harmonic of the laser radiation. Experimentally, tuning in the visible wavelength ranges and high pulse power (up to 20 mW at 475 nm wavelength) were achieved.

Abstract:We experimentally observed conical third harmonic generation (THG) in a two-dimensional periodically poled LiTaO3 nonlinear photonic crystal. The conical THG was attributed to cascaded quasi-phase matching (QPM) processes assisted by scattering fundamental waves in the nonlinear photonic crystal. The characteristics of the generated conical beam, such as the emit angle and beam size, varied with the fundamental wavelength because it changed the scattering-assisted QPM configuration. Our experimental results demonstrated that scattering light can be effectively involved in a cascade nonlinear optical process through QPM, which provides a possible way to produce short-wavelength conical beams to meet the demands of practical applications.

Abstract:The methods to generate terahertz(THz)waves can be divided into electronics and photonics.We use nonlinear optical difference frequency generation to obtain THz waves which belongs to photonics method.It is portable and run at room temperature,with high power and low cost.A simultaneous dual-wavelength quasi-continuous wave(CW)laser-diode-end-pumped Nd∶YAG laser polarized operating at 1319 nm and 1338 nm has been demonstrated and the laser at 1064 nm is suppressed successfully.A total polarized quasi-CW output power of 2.22 W is obtained at a pump power of 20 W with a pulse repetition rate of 50 kHz,and the slope efficiency is 12.72%.The corresponding pulse width is 71.91 ns.The beam quality factor M2 is as low as 1.165 and the instability of the output power is less than 0.487% at the polarized wave output power of 2.17 W.Using the simultaneous dual-wavelength laser,the highly coherent THz wave radiation of 3.23 THz will be generated by nonlinear optical difference frequency method in DAST(4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate)crystal.The ideal output peak power is 4.71 mW.The simultaneous dual-wavelength laser provides theoretically basis for generating highly coherent terahertz wave radiation by nonlinear optical difference frequency method.
