Abstract:Active restoration (AR) is a novel lightpath restoration scheme proposed recently for guaranteeing a certain degree of survivability in WDM optical networks with a reasonable tradeoff between capacity requirement and restoration time. An analytical model has been proposed to understand the restoration probability behavior of a connection request in optical networks employing AR based on the assumption that all the backup routes of the connection are independent. In a real AR-based optical network, however, the backup paths of a connection are likely correlated since they may share some common links along their routes. As the first step toward the restoration probability analysis incorporating the correlation among backup paths of a connection in AR-based networks, we propose in this paper an analytical approach to modeling the restoration probability of the connection by considering all the possible correlation between any two of its successive backup paths. Compared to the old restoration models without considering the correlation among backup paths, the proposed new model can significantly improve the accuracy in estimating the restoration probability for AR-based networks, as verified by extensive simulation results based on two typical backbone network topologies.

Abstract:In wavelength-routed optical networks, a lightpath connection can be provisioned only if a path, or a pair of paths in case of path protection is required, can be found which satisfies multiple constraints while simultaneously achieving optimal primary cost. The primary cost can be any metric set by network administrators, and the constraints concerned in optical networks include wavelength continuity constraint, accumulation effect of some transmission impairments in the optical domain, and SRLG-disjoint requirement in survivable networks. In this paper, the impact of these constraints on the optimal path calculation algorithms is studied. Three novel algorithms for solving this problem, which we call “Impairment Aware Optimal Path Pair” problem, are proposed, and their performance is evaluated through extensive simulations.

Abstract:Reconfigurable optical add-and-drop multiplexer (ROADM) is a key element in optical networks. As several ROADMs are cascaded over long paths, the penalty induced by ROADM has become non-negligible due to the tight optical filtering. In this case, for efficient and reliable network planning and operation, accurate monitoring of optical filtering penalty is very important. In this paper, we propose a real-time optical filtering monitoring scheme based on model fusion. We combine an analytical model based on the digital communications theory of band-limited channels with linear equalization and a data-driven model implemented using artificial neural network (ANN). The scheme can achieve high accuracy and interpretability. Moreover, since the input features are extracted from configuration parameters and receiver digital signal processing (DSP), no additional devices are needed, which is attractive for practical deployment. Extensive simulations and experiments are conducted to investigate the performance of the scheme, and the results show the superior performance.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks using wavelength routing technology are considered to be a potential and practical solution to the next generation of wide area backbone networks. The ever-increasing demand for bandwidth farther enhances the application of WDM optical networking technology. The main problem involved in design and optimization of wavelength-routed optical network is lightpath routing and wavelength assignment, namely, R&WA. In previous work on the R&WA problem, the project function has been analyzed by mathematic tools, such as integrate linear programming (ILP), heuristic algorithms or probability model, under the assumption of an ideal physical layer over which transmission impairments are ignored. In practical application, however, such impairments and their influence over traffic performance should be considered seriously, and the lightpath selection should be adjusted accordingly.In this paper, we propose an integrated approach for lightpath routing, which considers both the limitations of network topology and resource and the restrictions resulted from transmission impairments through the path computed by our heuristic algorithm when performing lightpath routing. The selected paths resulted from our proposed R&WA algorithm will be evaluated in a coarse-to-fine mechanism. By analyzing the impact of the optical devices (OXC, EDFA etc.) deployed through the lightpath, an optimal path is finally determined.This paper is composed mainly in three parts. For the first part, as to a given network topology, we present the ligthpath routing result, which investigate the influence of different network parameters, based on the proposed heuristic algorithm combining graph theory. For the second part, we studied the impact of various transmission impairments over BER performance, including crosstalk and noise caused by the optical devices. For the third part we combine the results obtained from the former two parts, and evaluate the selected path in a coarse-to-fine mechanism to make an optimal selection. The problem of load balancing is also briefly discussed in our paper.

Abstract:The multi-log(2)N network architecture is attractive for constructing optical switches, and the related routing algorithms are critical for the operation and efficiency of such switches. Although several routing algorithms have been proposed for multi-log(2)N networks, a full performance comparison among them has not been published lip to now. Thus, we rectify this omission by providing Such a comparison in terms of blocking probability, time complexity, hardware cost and load balancing capability. Notice that the load balance is important for reducing the peak power requirement of a switch, so we also propose in this paper a new routing algorithm for optical multi-log(2)N networks to achieve a better load balance.

Abstract:After entering the 21st century, the annual growth rate of network bandwidth demand is as high as 50-100%. In recent years, Automatic Switch Optical Network (ASON) have been widely studied as a new generation optical network technology with high speed, large capacity and ultra-long distance transmission. Among them, the main research focuses on improving the network bandwidth and transmission rate. However, due to the increasingly stable transmission medium and mode, the improvement of research results is very limited, especially in the current situation of a large number of network nodes. In order to improve the performance of optical network, a new structure model of optical network hypergraph is proposed based on Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) and Hypergraph theory. In addition, the routing based on parallel-path-based bandwidth algorithm (PPBA) demonstrates the excellent topology characteristics of the network, such as small diameter, low blocking rate and short forwarding delay.

Abstract:It is known that multicast provisioning is important for supporting cloud-based applications, and as the traffics from these applications are increasing quickly, we may rely on optical networks to realize high-throughput multicast. Meanwhile, the flexible-grid elastic optical networks (EONs) achieve agile access to the massive bandwidth in optical fibers, and hence can provision variable bandwidths to adapt to the dynamic demands from the cloud-based applications. In this paper, we consider all-optical multicast in EONs in a practical manner and focus on designing impairment-and splitting-aware multicast provisioning schemes. We first study the procedure of adaptive modulation selection for a light-tree, and point out that the multicast scheme in EONs is fundamentally different from that in the fixed-grid wavelength-division multiplexing networks. Then, we formulate the problem of impairment-and splitting-aware routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (ISa-RMSA) for all-optical multicast in EONs and analyze its hardness. Next, we analyze the advantages brought by the flexibility of routing structures and discuss the ISa-RMSA schemes based on light-trees and light-forests. This paper suggests that for ISa-RMSA, the light-forest-based approach can use less bandwidth than the light-tree-based one, while still satisfying the quality of transmission requirement. Therefore, we establish the minimum light-forest problem for optimizing a light-forest in ISa-RMSA. Finally, we design several time-efficient ISa-RMSA algorithms, and prove that one of them can solve the minimum light-forest problem with a fixed approximation ratio.
Combined Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Transmission Impairments in Optical Transport Networks

Abstract:An integrated approach which combines traditional routing and wavelength assignment problem with physical transmission impairments is proposed for the optimal design of wavelength-routed optical networks. A heuristic algorithm is developed to evaluate the approach in a coarse-to-fine manner, and the load balancing problem is also studied. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can guarantee transmission performance, meanwhile the wavelength requirement is close to the optimal result, and the traffic load tends to be evenly distributed with more alternate paths.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a model to analyze the influence of information asynchronization on networking performance. In the proposed analytical model, we introduce the "distributed network noise" (DNN) parameter to describe information asynchronization of wavelength availability, which is caused by packet loss during the flooding procedure. We also derive the relationship between packet loss rate and DNN, as well as the relationship between DNN and blocking probability. It is shown that the experimental results agree well with the estimate values derived from our proposed analytical model.

Abstract:The analytical modeling for linear and non-linear impairments (LNI) for single mode fiber (SMF) and simulative analysis of extended power budget class-1 i.e. E1-class of next generation passive optic network-2 (NG-PON2) is presented in the paper. The proposed power-budget class time and wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) based NG-PON2 network configuration is delivering symmetric 2.5 point-to-multi point (PtM) representing time and TWDM XGS-PON along with 10 Gbps point-to-point (PtP) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) symmetric and coexistent channels (Ch) in worst-case scenario. Channel modelling of LNI is carried out under the incremental and aggregate strain of estimated chromatic dispersion CD, self-phase modulation (SPM), cross-phase modulation (XPM) of single mode fiber (SMF) channel deployed in optical distributing network (ODN) between 20 and 50 km link lengths. Downlink (D/L) and uplink (U/L) ODN is optimized to PT ODN = 7.1 dBm and 4.09 dBm, respectively and corresponding channel imparities including Kerr parameter γ , corresponding SPM, XPM, CD, four-wave mixing (FWM) analysis and corresponding component power and efficiency, interchange crosstalk ( Cc ) attracting power penalties ( Pc ) are estimated and incorporated in the simulation for the real response of lossy SMF channel. Further, splitter power budget (SP) and slitter configuration for respective PtM and PtP D/L Ch are estimated under the aggregate impact of CD, SPM, XPM and FWM. Analytical modeling of LNI and simulative analysis has confirmed the configuration delivered rise in receiver sensitivity (Rxs) of − 39.75/− 33.45 dBm and − 29/− 35.34 dBm for D/L and U/L Ch respectively. The estimated power of FWM element is between 1.34 × 10 −52 to 2.15 × 10 −53 and 3.87 × 10 −52 to 2.41 × 10 −51 contributing crosstalk between Ch ( Cc ) of − 31.97/− 30.12 dB for down/up spectrum under the impact of SPM and XPM respectively accommodating splitter configuration of 768 at 40 km.

Abstract:The network architecture where each node integrates an IP router and an OXC (optical cross-connect) is an attractive paradigm for the next generation optical Internet. IP wavelength routing or POW (packet over wavelengths) is based on this kind of architecture. The goal of this architecture is to switch as much traffic as possible directly by means of OXCs, because IP forwarding is relatively expensive and causes large end-to-end delay by comparison. Based on analyzing the problems and shortcomings of the previous node structure, a novel node structure is proposed to overcome the problems-encountered by the previous scheme. Then two IP switching protocols, IFMP (Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol) and GSMP (General Switch Management Protocol), are extended to support IP wavelength routing networks. Finally, the performance of an IP wavelength routing network is analyzed with self-similar network traffic model. The simulated results show that the higher the network traffic self-similar degree, the higher switching gain the network gets.
A Dynamic Modeling And Dimensioning Approach For All-Optical Networks

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new dimensioning model for the optical network by the time-dependent blocking probability. This approach is motivated by [6] where the absorption probability based on transient analysis of continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) is used. Unlike the absorption probability model, the blocking probability has been used to dimensioning network for long time and has lower computation complexity. However, using traditional steady-state probability will cause overprovisioning in most cases. So we introduce a time-dependent blocking probability model which is based on the transient analysis of CTMC. Then we propose a novel closed-form transient analysis methods for a single link and and an arbitrary topology network. Applying this approach, the time-dependent provisioning can satisfy dynamically changing traffic demands and avoid overprovisioning problem in optical networks.

Abstract:Computer simulation is used to evaluate the performance of cascaded multiplexers/demultiplexers in optical networks. The intersymbol interference (ISI) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) formats caused by a series of AWG filters is simulated. We also consider the RZ formats with different duty circles transmitted in the optical networks. In order to suppress the power penalty caused by AWGs, a novel method is given out in this article. A synchronous clock is used to modulate the received optical signal so that enhance the clock part in the frequency field of the signal. This method can reduce the power penalty of AWGs and help optical signal to pass through more optical network elements in large area.

Abstract:As optical networks are evolving from traditional opaque networks toward future transparent networks, physical impairments from transmission and switching have become the significant transparent reach limitation for signals. To overcome physical impairments, sparsely deploying optical-electrical-optical regenerators in transparent networks is currently the most economic and reliable solution, namely translucent networks. We study the impairment aware protection issues and propose an impairment aware sharing constraint relaxed path protection (ISRPP) scheme for single-link failures in translucent optical networks. By relaxing the traditional sharing constraint in a limited degree, ISRPP effectively enhances the resource utilization on both wavelengths and regenerators, which contributes to improve the performance of connection blocking probability. Simulation results show that ISRPP can obtain notable resource efficiency and achieve satisfactory tradeoff between blocking probability and vulnerability ratio with respect to its counterpart. Abstract:A mathematic model is presented for the noise accumulation within optical paths in optical transport networks according to the hypothetical reference model (HRM) defined in ITU-T recommendation G. 873. The optical paths may pass through multiple optical nodes and fiber links with optical amplifiers. Analytic calculation formulae are derived and simplified according to the node isolation principle. An engineering equivalent model is given, as well as the corresponding calculation formulae. The impact of the gain (attenuation) distribution within an optical node on the noise power is analyzed. Optimum design principles are proposed for optical nodes to reduce noise power in optical paths. The noise models for optical path can be used as a reference for designing optical nodes and fiber transmission spans in optical networks.

Abstract:To provide determined network services, including high bandwidth, low data loss, low latency, and low jitter services, to transmission and computing resource integration networks, a novel routing optimization method is proposed. Based on physical-layer collision awareness and transparent packet duplication, delay and deletion, high-reliability and low-latency all-optical communication can be achieved. In addition, this method has the potential to be adapted to rapidly time-varying topologies and link lengths in wireless optical networks. In this paper, the processing and distribution of data packets in this routing optimization method are described; a structure of the all-optical switching node for supporting this routing optimization method is presented; and the influence of switching node performance, such as the maximum cache time, the maximum multicast packet number and the perception latency, on end-to-end availability are analyzed by simulation.
