Abstract:In this article, we propose a model to analyze the influence of information asynchronization on networking performance. In the proposed analytical model, we introduce the "distributed network noise" (DNN) parameter to describe information asynchronization of wavelength availability, which is caused by packet loss during the flooding procedure. We also derive the relationship between packet loss rate and DNN, as well as the relationship between DNN and blocking probability. It is shown that the experimental results agree well with the estimate values derived from our proposed analytical model.
Burst Loss Probability Model for Hybrid Deflection and Retransmission Routing in OBS Networks.

Abstract:The combination of deflection routing and burst retransmission is an attractive scheme for resolving the burst contention problem in Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks. Most of previous works on hybrid schemes use simulation approach to prove the efficicency. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for obtaining the overall burst loss ratio of an OBS network that take into account deflection and retransmission togetther. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed by extensive simulations upon the NS-2 simulator and two typical networks topologies. Numerical results obtained from the model indicate that at low traffic load, the hybrid scheme significantly outperforms the conventional deflection routing and burst retransmission schemes in terms of overall burst loss ratio. However, at high traffic load, the simple hybrid scheme performs even worse than the other schemes.

Abstract:Dissemination of cached contents on device-to-device (D2D) links is one promising technique to relieve network load. In this correspondence paper, we extend our Markov chain model (A. Ahmed, H. Shan, and A. Huang, 2019) to analyze the impact of both node mobility and multiple concurrent transmissions in a cluster based mobile caching network. To unearth the impact of the former factor, we derive the steady-state probability of nodes in different clusters under the Markov mobility model. To reveal the impact of the latter factor, the per-node collision-free transmission chance in each active cluster is tunable by building the network with spatial reuse time division multiple access (STDMA) and the receiver based code division multiple access (R-CDMA) codes. Diverse network performance metrics are derived from the analytical framework. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analysis and examine the impact of system parameters.

Abstract:Path diversity of different concurrent paths inevitably introduces out-of-order packet delivery, which leads to unnecessary retransmissions and a severely lowered data throughput. In order to analyze the fundamental behavior and influencing factors of packet reordering, several sets of simulation-based multipath experiments are conducted with different aggregating paths. In addition, the relationship between reordering and number of paths are discussed. Furthermore, an end-to-end measurement study of packet reordering in concurrent multipath transfer is presented. To simply the analysis process, a cumulative distribution function of transmission delay for each packet is used. The model is proved to be an effective one by contrastive analysis. Abstract:To provide determined network services, including high bandwidth, low data loss, low latency, and low jitter services, to transmission and computing resource integration networks, a novel routing optimization method is proposed. Based on physical-layer collision awareness and transparent packet duplication, delay and deletion, high-reliability and low-latency all-optical communication can be achieved. In addition, this method has the potential to be adapted to rapidly time-varying topologies and link lengths in wireless optical networks. In this paper, the processing and distribution of data packets in this routing optimization method are described; a structure of the all-optical switching node for supporting this routing optimization method is presented; and the influence of switching node performance, such as the maximum cache time, the maximum multicast packet number and the perception latency, on end-to-end availability are analyzed by simulation.

Abstract:Active restoration (AR) is a novel lightpath restoration scheme proposed recently for guaranteeing a certain degree of survivability in WDM optical networks with a reasonable tradeoff between capacity requirement and restoration time. An analytical model has been proposed to understand the restoration probability behavior of a connection request in optical networks employing AR based on the assumption that all the backup routes of the connection are independent. In a real AR-based optical network, however, the backup paths of a connection are likely correlated since they may share some common links along their routes. As the first step toward the restoration probability analysis incorporating the correlation among backup paths of a connection in AR-based networks, we propose in this paper an analytical approach to modeling the restoration probability of the connection by considering all the possible correlation between any two of its successive backup paths. Compared to the old restoration models without considering the correlation among backup paths, the proposed new model can significantly improve the accuracy in estimating the restoration probability for AR-based networks, as verified by extensive simulation results based on two typical backbone network topologies.

Abstract:In an all-optical double-hop free-space optical communication system, the outage probability and bit error rate are analyzed using a composite channel. The model involves atmospheric attenuation, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and fiber coupling efficiency. Based on analysis of the channel model and amplifier spontaneous emission noise, the outage probability and bit error rate are obtained. For an all-optical double-hop link, fiber coupling efficiency has an important impact on outage probability, especially at relatively short total link length. By compensating for three terms of wavefront distortions, the system outage probability significantly decreases. The communication performance is further improved by optimizing the receiving aperture diameter and beam width.

Abstract:In wavelength-routed optical networks, the recovery ratio of interrupted connections after failures is mainly affected by adjacent-node resource reservation collisions in a distributed path restoration. This paper proposes a novel collision avoidance wavelength assignment (CA-WA) mechanism to make adjacent nodes select different wavelength assignment schemes and therefore different recovery wavelengths for the recovery routes. Simulation results show that in both single- and double-fiber failure scenarios the proposed wavelength assignment mechanism significantly reduces reservation contentions and achieves a higher recovery ratio, especially when the network load is high.

Abstract:With the development of optical transmission technology, optical fiber networks have become critical infrastructures in supporting information transmission on the Internet. However, the fiber cable is very vulnerable to large-scale damage such as earthquakes or pulse bombs. What is more serious is that it will take a long time to locate and repair the damages on fiber links. The long-term repair process will cause continuous network performance degradation and severe economic loss. The fact is that these dangerous areas may be ignored by traditional vulnerability analysis models. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method to analyze the vulnerability of fiber networks based on network recoverability. We first improve the traditional fiber network simulation methods and damage simulation methods to provide a compatible foundation for the network recoverability simulation. Then, we present the network vulnerability analysis model: the Damage Measurement and Location Model (DMLM). The model employs the heuristic traversal algorithm based on random points to locate the candidate attack positions. We design three vulnerability metrics: two metrics are related to network recoverability and one metric is used for comparison. We also build their corresponding theoretical frameworks to determine the appropriate model parameters to satisfy the specified estimation error requirements. Numerical results prove the proposed model’s effectiveness and excellent sensitivity for essential parameters. The visual results of the vulnerable zones prove the necessity of considering network recoverability in vulnerability analysis of optical fiber networks.

Abstract:The Intelligent Optical Network (ION) has emerged as a promising technology in the development of optical networks. ION has a separate control plane, where real-time processing is a most substantial feature. However, the complicated control and management infrastructure requires multiple protocols to cooperate in the same signaling network, and jitter may impair real-time processing, like fast failure detection. In this article, the interactivity of failure detection and network congestion control will be analyzed and proposed solutions will be evaluated by simulations. The failure detection protocol in the control plane is inherited from IP networks. However, there is a scalability problem in the ION when requiring fast detection time. Congestion in the signaling network may be caused by various events. It could be fatal when interacting with fast failure detection would trigger a positive feedback. Several solutions will be presented and analyzed with respect to fast and scalable failure detection and congestion control. We performed a series of intensive simulations to study the interactivity of failure detection and congestion control on the 32-node USNET. The simulation results show that the proposed Enhanced Hello protocol performs well in both fast detection mode and congestion state, especially with far less false failure alarms. The Retransmission Reduction mechanism, which is designed to alleviate congestion, can avoid message loss in some degree, but gives little improvement in other aspects.

Abstract:Optical networks have been considered for on-chip communications due to its advantages on bandwidth density, power efficiency and propagation speed over the electrical counterpart. However, the major optical device-micro ring resonator is very sensitive to manufacturing errors and temperature fluctuations, which results in the bandwidth loss or even the failure of optical link. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant and deadlock-free routing algorithm to improve the reliability of on-chip optical network without requiring additional virtual channel. In addition, a path selection mechanism taking account of the actual bandwidth of the optical link affected by fabrication and temperature variations is implemented in the routing unit. The simulation results show that compared to the conventional fault-tolerant routing methods, our routing algorithm can improve the transmission latency and throughput of the network under static and dynamic link faults by up to 51% and 22%, respectively.

Abstract:Computer simulation is used to evaluate the performance of cascaded multiplexers/demultiplexers in optical networks. The intersymbol interference (ISI) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) formats caused by a series of AWG filters is simulated. We also consider the RZ formats with different duty circles transmitted in the optical networks. In order to suppress the power penalty caused by AWGs, a novel method is given out in this article. A synchronous clock is used to modulate the received optical signal so that enhance the clock part in the frequency field of the signal. This method can reduce the power penalty of AWGs and help optical signal to pass through more optical network elements in large area.

Abstract:The k-ary n-cube which has an n-dimensional grid structure with k nodes in each dimension has been a popular topology for interconnection networks. Analytical models for k-ary n-cubes have been widely reported under the assumptions that the message destinations are uniformly distributed over all network nodes and the message arrivals follow a non-bursty Poisson process. Recent studies have convincingly demonstrated that the traffic pattern in interconnection networks reveals the bursty nature in the both spatial domain (i.e., non-uniform distribution of message destinations) and temporal domain (i.e., bursty message arrival process). With the aim of capturing the characteristics of the realistic traffic pattern and obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the performance behaviour of interconnection networks, this paper presents a new analytical model for k-ary n-cubes in the presence of spatio-temporal bursty traffic. The accuracy of the model is validated through extensive simulation experiments of an actual system.
Re-architecting Congestion Management in Lossless Ethernet.

Abstract:The lossless Ethernet is attractive for data centers and cluster systems, but various performance issues, such as unfairness, head-of-line blocking and congestion spreading, etc., impede its large-scale deployment in production systems. Through fine-grained experimental observations, we inspect the interactions between flow control and congestion control, and are aware that the radical cause of performance problems is the ineffective elements in the congestion management architecture for lossless Ethernet, including the improper congestion detection mechanism and inadequate rate adjustment law. Inspired by these insights and findings obtained in experiment investigations, we revise the congestion management architecture, and propose the Photonic Congestion Notification (PCN) scheme, which consists of two basic components: (i) a novel congestion detection and identification mechanism to recognize which flows are really responsible for congestion; (ii) a receiver-driven rate adjustment method to alleviate congestion in as short as 1 RTT. We implement PCN using DPDK NICs and conduct evaluations using testbed experiments and simulations. The results show that PCN greatly improves performance under concurrent burst workload, and significantly mitigates PFC PAUSE messages and reduces the flow completion time under realistic workload.

Abstract:Feature Issue on Transmission in Optically Transparent Core Networks An optical cross connect (OXC) is an integral component of all-optical networks. As OXC malfunction leads to data loss or misrouting. Surveillance of OXCs is critical to network reliability. A recent OXC supervisory scheme, based on different time-delay recognition, identifies the state of the input-output connection through the OXC, including any possible effect of link failure or misrouting. However, for a large-scale OXC or OXCs in cascade, this approach requires excessively long delay fibers, raising feasibility issues such as power amplification and length of surveillance period. We propose modified schemes for reducing the length of delay fibers without downgrading the performance.

Abstract:Wavelength routed optical networks have emerged as a technology that can effectively utilize the enormous bandwidth of the optical fiber. Wavelength conversion technology and wavelength converters play an important role in enhancing fiber utilization and in reducing the overall call blocking probability of the network. In this paper, we develop a new analytical model to calculate the average blocking probability in multi-fiber link networks using limited range wavelength conversion. Based on the results obtained, we conclude that the proposed analytical model is simple and yet can effectively analyze the impact of wavelength conversion ranges and number of fibers on network performance. Also a new heuristic approach for placement of wavelength converters to reduce blocking probabilities is explored. Finally, we analyze network performance with the proposed scheme. It can be observed from numerical simulations that limited range converters placed at a few nodes can provide almost the same blocking probability as full range wavelength converters placed at all the nodes. We also show that being equipped with a multi-fiber per-link has the same effect as being equipped with the capability of limited range wavelength conversion. So a multi-fiber per-link network using limited range wavelength conversion has similar blocking performance as a full wavelength convertible network. Since a multi-fiber network using limited range wavelength conversion could use fewer converters than a single-fiber network using limited range wavelength conversion and because wavelength converters are today more expensive than fiber equipment, a multi-fiber network in condition with limited range wavelength conversion is less costly than a single fiber network using only limited range wavelength conversion. Thus, multi-fiber per-link network using limited range wavelength conversion is currently a more practical method for all optical WDM networks. Simulation studies carried out on a 14-node NSFNET, a 10-node CERNET (China Education and Research Network), and a 9-node regular mesh network validate the analysis.
NegotiaToR: Towards A Simple Yet Effective On-demand Reconfigurable Datacenter Network

Abstract:Recent advances in fast optical switching technology show promise in meeting the high goodput and low latency requirements of datacenter networks (DCN). We present NegotiaToR, a simple network architecture for optical reconfigurable DCNs that utilizes on-demand scheduling to handle dynamic traffic. In NegotiaToR, racks exchange scheduling messages through an in-band control plane and distributedly calculate non-conflicting paths from binary traffic demand information. Optimized for incasts, it also provides opportunities to bypass scheduling delays. NegotiaToR is compatible with prevalent flat topologies, and is tailored towards a minimalist design for on-demand reconfigurable DCNs, enhancing practicality. Through large-scale simulations, we show that NegotiaToR achieves both small mice flow completion time (FCT) and high goodput on two representative flat topologies, especially under heavy loads. Particularly, the FCT of mice flows is one to two orders of magnitude better than the state-of-the-art traffic-oblivious reconfigurable DCN design.

Abstract:In elastic optical networks (EONs), bandwidth fragmentation refers to the existence of non-aligned, isolated and small-sized blocks of contiguous subcarrier slots in the optical spectrum. As they are neither contiguous in the spectrum domain nor aligned along the routing paths, the network operator will have difficulty to use these slots for future connections. In this work, we analyze the effect of bandwidth fragmentation on the blocking probability in EONs. Our theoretical analysis indicates that two factors related to bandwidth fragmentation have effects on the blocking probability: 1) the extent that the available slot-blocks (i.e., blocks of contiguous slots) on different links are aligned on spectrum locations, and 2) the sizes of the available slot-blocks in links' spectra for future requests. When an EON's spectrum becomes more fragmented, the first factor actually reduces the blocking probability, while the second one increases the blocking probability. Their mixed effect determines the overall trend of how the blocking probability will change with bandwidth fragmentation. Our theoretical model can forecast this trend and reveal the relation among the blocking probability, bandwidth fragmentation, request bandwidth distribution, and spectrum utilization. We have also conducted numerical simulations to verify the theoretical analysis, and the simulation results exhibit similar trends as predicted by the theoretical model.
