Abstract:We consider a bufferless optical burst switching optical cross connect modeled as a continuous-time Markov chain based on a generalized Engset model. We focus specifically on critical load and other given levels of high utilization conditions and evaluate the required number of wavelength channels per cable to keep the blocking probability below a given level. We observe that although a large number of wavelength channels per cable are required to achieve low blocking probability under critical load condition, the required number of such channels decreases significantly if the utilization is allowed to drop to 90% or 80%. We also propose a new blocking probability approximation that is more accurate than previous approximations under critical load condition.
A Novel Modeling Method for Analysis of IP Networks

Abstract:A novel modeling method is proposed to analyze actual IP networks. This method decomposes an IP network into several basic units and constructs the mathematical model of the network by setting up the corresponding state equation for every unit. Based on the Bohacek’s model, we develop a first-order differential equation to describe queue change in an output port of a router, which reduces system complexity obviously without sacrificing simulation precision. The RED-marking strategy is introduced for the queue management of routers. Finally, we build a mathematical model for a simplified network. The model is well validated by comparing its analytical results with the NS simulation results.

Abstract:After entering the 21st century, the annual growth rate of network bandwidth demand is as high as 50-100%. In recent years, Automatic Switch Optical Network (ASON) have been widely studied as a new generation optical network technology with high speed, large capacity and ultra-long distance transmission. Among them, the main research focuses on improving the network bandwidth and transmission rate. However, due to the increasingly stable transmission medium and mode, the improvement of research results is very limited, especially in the current situation of a large number of network nodes. In order to improve the performance of optical network, a new structure model of optical network hypergraph is proposed based on Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) and Hypergraph theory. In addition, the routing based on parallel-path-based bandwidth algorithm (PPBA) demonstrates the excellent topology characteristics of the network, such as small diameter, low blocking rate and short forwarding delay.

Abstract:The concept of OTN Node Transmission Model is introduced.The requirement of OTN Node Transmission Model is discussed.This model uses the frequency domain transmission matrix to express the OTN node transport characteristics.The simplified model based on WDM and IM-DD systems,the relationship between node characteristics and model parameters and measurement of model parameters are also discussed.At last a briefly discussion on how to develop the OTN simulation and CAD software based on our model is demonstrated.

Abstract:Banyan networks are attractive for serving as the optical switch architectures due to their nice properties of small depth and absolutely signal loss uniformity. Combining the horizontal expansion and vertical stacking of optical banyan networks is a general scheme for constructing banyan-based optical switching networks. The resulting horizontally expanded and vertically stacked optical banyan (HVOB) networks usually take either a high hardware cost or a large network depth to guarantee the nonblocking property. Blocking behavior analysis is an effective approach to studying network performance and finding a graceful compromise among hardware cost, network depth, and blocking probability; however, little has been done to analyze the blocking behavior of general HVOB networks. In this paper, we study the overall blocking behavior of general HVOB networks, where an upper bound on the blocking probability of a HVOB network is developed with respect to the number of planes ( stacked copies) and the number of stages. The upper bound accurately depicts the overall blocking behavior of a HVOB network as verified by an extensive simulation study, and it agrees with the strictly nonblocking condition of the network. The derived upper bound is significant because it reveals the inherent relationship among blocking probability, network depth, and network hardware cost, so that a desirable tradeoff can be made among them. In particular, our bound gives network developers an effective tool to estimate the maximum blocking probability of a HVOB network, in which different routing strategies can be applied with a guaranteed performance in terms of blocking probability, hardware cost and network depth. Our upper bound model predicts some unobvious qualitative behaviors of HVOB networks, and it draws an important conclusion that a very low blocking probability ( e. g., less than 0.001 percent) can be achieved in a HVOB network without introducing either a significantly high hardware cost or a large network depth.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach for building non-blocking optical MINs on building blocks of given size. The network constructed by our approach is self-routing and has O(log2N) propagation delay for size N×N. The maximum signal loss and crosstalk are compared to those of the widely used crossbar network with the switch complexity of O(N2). The proposed approach is a good choice for constructing non-blocking optical switch networks with low signal loss and crosstalk.
A general model for store-carry-forward routing schemes with multicast in delay tolerant networks

Abstract:Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are sparse and highly mobile wireless ad hoc networks, where no contemporaneous end-to-end path may ever exist at any given time instant, and thus the "store-carry-forward" kind of schemes becomes a natural routing option. A lot of models have been proposed to analyze the unicast performance of such routing schemes in the DTNs, while few works consider the multicast scenario. In this paper, we develop a general continuous time Markov chain-based theoretical framework to characterize the complicated message delivery process of the DTN multicast scenarios, based on which analytical expressions are further derived for both the expected delivery delay and expected delivery cost. The developed theoretical framework is general in the sense that: 1) it can be used to analyze the DTN multicast performance under the common "store-carry-forward" routing schemes; 2) it can also be used for the common mobility models; 3) it covers some available models developed for the DTN unicast as special cases. We then apply the theoretical framework to explore the delivery performance of two popular routing schemes, the epidemic routing and the two-hop relaying.

Abstract:As optically random access memory is not commercially available, and with the fiber being cheaper and cheaper, the core fiber bandwidth utilization is not the key factor of the network, how to use the huge bandwidth flexibly and efficiently is one of the hot topics of optical networks. Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty traffic, and can be statistically using the optical resources, so that OBS based transparent optical network attracting more and more attentions. However, the precondition of most of the OBS networking solution is based on wavelength conversion, which is limited by the nonlinear of materials. We proposed a novel networking policy by using dual fiber links server model along with traffic spacing mechanism (TSM) by address differentiation, the transmitting IP directly in optical domain for traffic data between physically adjacent nodes, with no necessary burst assembling (NABAN). The theoretical results show that this method can improve network performance and be practically used in fields.

Abstract:Buffers are essential components of any packet switch for resolving contentions among arriving packets. Currently, optical buffers are composed of fiber delay lines (FDL), whose blocking and delay behavior differ drastically from that of conventional RAM at least two-fold: 1) only multiples of discrete time delays can be offered to arriving packets; 2) a packet must be dropped if the maximum delay provided by optical buffer is not sufficient to avoid contention, this property is called balking. As a result, optical buffers only have finite time resolution, which may lead to excess load and prolong the packet delay. In this paper, a novel queueing model of optical buffer is proposed, and the closed-form expressions of blocking probability and mean delay are derived to explore the tradeoff between buffer performance and system parameters, such as the length of the optical buffer, the time granularity of FDLs, and to evaluate the overall impact of packet length distribution on the buffer performance.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a model to analyze the influence of information asynchronization on networking performance. In the proposed analytical model, we introduce the "distributed network noise" (DNN) parameter to describe information asynchronization of wavelength availability, which is caused by packet loss during the flooding procedure. We also derive the relationship between packet loss rate and DNN, as well as the relationship between DNN and blocking probability. It is shown that the experimental results agree well with the estimate values derived from our proposed analytical model.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a hybrid electro-optical Intra-Data Center Network based on a service-customized Long-Range Dependence traffic model specific to machine-generated data. We show that different application classes, typically hosted by data centers, possess distinct and highly varying behaviors, which need to be considered for an efficient architecture design and optimization. In this regard, using a statistics-based simulative demonstration, we show the benefits brought by optical circuit switching, namely due to its potential in handling bulky and highly intensive data traffic peculiar to some applications. Owing to the fact that cost savings represent another essential target of network optimization, we also quantify the gains related to capital and operational expenditures specific to the new hybrid scheme.

Abstract:Optical backbone networks constitute the fundamental infrastructure employed today by network operators to deliver services to users. As network capacity is a key factor influencing optical network performance, it is important to understand how topological and physical properties impact its behavior and to have the capability to estimate its value. In this context, we propose here a method to evaluate the network capacity that relies on the optical reach to account for physical layer aspects in conjunction with constrained routing techniques for traffic routing. As this type of routing can lead to traffic blocking, particularly due to the limitation on the number of wavelengths per fiber, we also propose a fiber assignment algorithm designed to deal with this problem. We apply this method to a set of randomly generated networks using a modified Waxman model, and for a network with 60 nodes, in a scenario without blocking, we obtain capacities of about 2.5 Pbit/s for a symbol rate of 64 Gbaud and about 5 Pbit/s for a symbol rate of 128 Gbaud. Remarkably, this duplication in the total network capacity is achieved by an increase in the total fiber length of only about 51%.

Abstract:A mathematic model is presented for the noise accumulation within optical paths in optical transport networks according to the hypothetical reference model (HRM) defined in ITU-T recommendation G. 873. The optical paths may pass through multiple optical nodes and fiber links with optical amplifiers. Analytic calculation formulae are derived and simplified according to the node isolation principle. An engineering equivalent model is given, as well as the corresponding calculation formulae. The impact of the gain (attenuation) distribution within an optical node on the noise power is analyzed. Optimum design principles are proposed for optical nodes to reduce noise power in optical paths. The noise models for optical path can be used as a reference for designing optical nodes and fiber transmission spans in optical networks.

Abstract:The Intelligent Optical Network (ION) has emerged as a promising technology in the development of optical networks. ION has a separate control plane, where real-time processing is a most substantial feature. However, the complicated control and management infrastructure requires multiple protocols to cooperate in the same signaling network, and jitter may impair real-time processing, like fast failure detection. In this article, the interactivity of failure detection and network congestion control will be analyzed and proposed solutions will be evaluated by simulations. The failure detection protocol in the control plane is inherited from IP networks. However, there is a scalability problem in the ION when requiring fast detection time. Congestion in the signaling network may be caused by various events. It could be fatal when interacting with fast failure detection would trigger a positive feedback. Several solutions will be presented and analyzed with respect to fast and scalable failure detection and congestion control. We performed a series of intensive simulations to study the interactivity of failure detection and congestion control on the 32-node USNET. The simulation results show that the proposed Enhanced Hello protocol performs well in both fast detection mode and congestion state, especially with far less false failure alarms. The Retransmission Reduction mechanism, which is designed to alleviate congestion, can avoid message loss in some degree, but gives little improvement in other aspects.
Computing Approximate Blocking Probability in Hierarchical Wavelength Routing Optical Networks

Abstract:Rapid development of optical communication techniques has made possible large scale wavelength routing optical networks. Nowadays, these networks are deployed worldwide. Large scale networks have natural hierarchies due to either geographical reasons or administrative consideration and are therefore managed in a hierarchical way correspondingly. That is, networks are composed of several subnetworks, which are themselves composed of other even smaller subnetworks. Erlang fixed point approximation (reduced load approximation) has been extensively used in performance evaluation of end to end call blocking probability in traditional circuit switching networks, which are also called loss networks. This method has also been extended for hierarchical loss networks. However, performance evaluation of call blocking probability in hierarchical wavelength routing optical networks has not yet been presented. In this paper, a kind of approximation method is developed for analyzing end to end call blocking probability in hierarchical wavelength routing optical networks. By iteratively running processes combining a top-down load distribution and a bottom-up calculation of node-pair blocking in the network hierarchy, a steady state will be reached and approximate end to end call blocking probability in hierarchical wavelength routing optical network is obtained. Both the link independent model and the link correlation model are used in our analysis. By comparing theoretical results derived from our approximation method and results obtained from discrete event simulation, we illustrate that our method gives reasonable estimate of end to end call blocking probability in hierarchical wavelength routing optical networks, with the correlation model giving much more accurate estimate than the independent model.
