Abstract:Thermal transport in nanostructures plays a critical role in modern technologies. As devices shrink, techniques that can measure thermal properties at nanometer and nanosecond scales are increasingly needed to capture transient, out-of-equilibrium phenomena. We present a novel pump-probe photon-electron method within a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to map temperature dynamics with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. By combining focused laser-induced heating and synchronized time-resolved monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), we track phonon, exciton and plasmon signals in various materials, including silicon nitride, aluminum thin film, and transition metal dichalcogenides. Our results demonstrate the technique's ability to follow temperature changes at the nanometer and nanosecond scales. The experimental data closely matched theoretical heat diffusion models, confirming the method's validity. This approach opens new opportunities to investigate transient thermal phenomena in nanoscale materials, offering valuable insights for applications in thermoelectric devices and nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Nanoscale heat transfer between two nanostructured surfaces holds paramount significance in the realms of extreme manufacturing and high-density data storage. However, experimental probing of heat transfer encounters significant challenges, primarily due to limitations in current instrumentation. Here, we report a method based on Raman spectroscopy to directly probe the temperature difference between a Si nanotip and SiC substrate. Results indicate a decrease in substrate temperature, while the temperature of the nanotip remains relatively stable as the nanotip moves away from the substrate from approximately 82.5 to 1320 nm. We trace this enhanced heat transfer to a significant augmentation, by one order of magnitude, in air conduction and thermal radiation energy exchange theoretically, with air conduction being the dominant mode over thermal radiation. This work advances the direct observation of surface temperatures with gaps smaller than 1 mu m, utilizing a noncontact and nondestructive Raman technique, which can be extended to studying near-field heat transfer across various Raman-active surfaces.

Abstract:Quasiballistic heat conduction from nanoscale heat sources of size comparable to phonon mean free paths has recently become of intense interest both scientifically and for its applications. Prior work has established that, in the quasiballistic regime, the apparent thermal properties of materials depend both on intrinsic mechanisms and the characteristics of the applied thermal gradient. However, many aspects of this regime remain poorly understood. Here, we experimentally study the thermal response of crystals to large thermal gradients generated by optical heating of nanoline arrays. Our experiments reveal the key role of the spatial frequencies and Fourier series amplitudes of the heating profile for thermal transport in the quasiballistic regime, in contrast to the conventional picture that focuses on the geometric dimensions of the individual heaters. Our work provides the insight needed to rationally mitigate local hot spots in modern applications by manipulating the spatial frequencies of the heater patterns.

Abstract:Electrical generation of heat in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and subsequent thermal transport into the surroundings can critically affect the design, operation, and reliability of electronic and optoelectronic devices based on these materials. Here we investigate such heat generation and transport characteristics in perfectly aligned, horizontal arrays of SWNTs integrated into transistor structures. We present quantitative assessments of local thermometry at individual SWNTs in these arrays, evaluated using scanning Joule expansion microscopy. Measurements at different applied voltages reveal electronic behaviors, including metallic and semiconducting responses, spatial variations in diameter or chirality, and localized defect sites. Analytical models, validated by measurements performed on different device structures at various conditions, enable accurate, quantitative extraction of temperature distributions at the level of individual SWNTs. Using current equipment, the spatial resolution and temperature precision are as good as ∼100 nm and ∼0.7 K, respectively.
Ultrafast heat flow in heterostructures of Au nanoclusters on thin-films: atomic-disorder induced by hot electrons

Abstract:We study the ultrafast structural dynamics, in response to electronic excitations, in heterostructures composed of Au$_{923}$ nanoclusters on thin-film substrates with the use of femtosecond electron diffraction. Various forms of atomic motion, such as thermal vibrations, thermal expansion and lattice disordering, manifest as distinct and quantifiable reciprocal-space observables. In photo-excited, supported nanoclusters thermal equilibration proceeds through intrinsic heat flow, between their electrons and their lattice, and extrinsic heat flow between the nanoclusters and their substrate. For an in-depth understanding of this process, we have extended the two-temperature model to the case of 0D/2D heterostructures and used it to describe energy flow among the various subsystems, to quantify interfacial coupling constants, and to elucidate the role of the optical and thermal substrate properties. When lattice heating of Au nanoclusters is dominated by intrinsic heat flow, a reversible disordering of atomic positions occurs, which is absent when heat is injected as hot substrate-phonons. The present analysis indicates that hot electrons can distort the lattice of nanoclusters, even if the lattice temperature is below the equilibrium threshold for surface pre-melting. Based on simple considerations, the effect is interpreted as activation of surface diffusion due to modifications of the potential energy surface at high electronic temperatures. We discuss the implications of such a process in structural changes during surface chemical reactions.

Abstract:A diverse spectrum of technology drivers such as improved thermal barriers, higher efficiency thermoelectric energy conversion, phase-change memory, heat-assisted magnetic recording, thermal management of nanoscale electronics, and nanoparticles for thermal medical therapies are motivating studies of the applied physics of thermal transport at the nanoscale. This review emphasizes developments in experiment, theory, and computation in the past ten years and summarizes the present status of the field. Interfaces become increasingly important on small length scales. Research during the past decade has extended studies of interfaces between simple metals and inorganic crystals to interfaces with molecular materials and liquids with systematic control of interface chemistry and physics. At separations on the order of ∼ 1 nm , the science of radiative transport through nanoscale gaps overlaps with thermal conduction by the coupling of electronic and vibrational excitations across weakly bonded or rough interfaces between materials. Major advances in the physics of phonons include first principles calculation of the phonon lifetimes of simple crystals and application of the predicted scattering rates in parameter-free calculations of the thermal conductivity. Progress in the control of thermal transport at the nanoscale is critical to continued advances in the density of information that can be stored in phase change memory devices and new generations of magnetic storage that will use highly localized heat sources to reduce the coercivity of magnetic media. Ultralow thermal conductivity—thermal conductivity below the conventionally predicted minimum thermal conductivity—has been observed in nanolaminates and disordered crystals with strong anisotropy. Advances in metrology by time-domain thermoreflectance have made measurements of the thermal conductivity of a thin layer with micron-scale spatial resolution relatively routine. Scanning thermal microscopy and thermal analysis using proximal probes has achieved spatial resolution of 10 nm, temperature precision of 50 mK, sensitivity to heat flows of 10 pW, and the capability for thermal analysis of sub-femtogram samples.

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction at Surfaces:From Nanoscale Heat Transport to Driven Phase Transitions

Abstract:Many fundamental processes of structural changes at surfaces occur on a pico- or femtosecond time scale. In order to study such ultra-fast processes, we have combined modern surface science techniques with fs-laser pulses in a pump-probe scheme. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) with grazing incident electrons ensures surface sensitivity for the probing electron pulses. Utilizing the Debye-Waller effect, we studied the nanoscale heat transport from an ultrathin film through a hetero-interface or the damping of vibrational excitations in monolayer adsorbate systems on the lower ps-time scale. By means of spot profile analysis the different cooling rates of epitaxial Ge nanostructures of different size and strain state were determined. The excitation and relaxation dynamics of a driven phase transition far away from thermal equilibrium is demonstrated using the In-induced (8x2) reconstruction on Si(111). This Peierls-distorted surface charge density wave system exhibits a discontinuous phase transition at 130 K from a (8x2) insulating ground state to (4x1) metallic excited state. Upon excitation by a fs-laser pulse, this structural phase transition is non-thermally driven in only 700 fs into the excited state. A small barrier of 40 meV hinders the immediate recovery of the groundstate and the system is found in a metastable supercooled state for up to few nanoseconds.

Thermal Wave Propagation Through Nanofilms in Ballistic-Diffusive Regime by Monte Carlo Simulations

Abstract:Investigations on ultrafast heat conduction are of great importance not only for the theoretical understanding of thermal transport, but also the applications of ultra-short pulse laser including the micromachining and the measurements of thermophysical properties of micro/nanomaterials where phonons propagate in ballistic-diffusive regime. In this work, the thermal wave in phonon ballistic-diffusive regime is systematically studied by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method. Simulation results show significant influence of the phonon boundary emission conditions, i.e. boundary conditions of phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), on the thermal wave propagation. The MC simulations with phonon Lambert emission (LE) predict a dispersive dissipative thermal wave while the MC simulations with directional emission (DE) predict a non-dispersive dissipative thermal wave. Temperature peak in the MC simulations with LE damps more rapidly than that in DE cases, and heat flux in MC simulations with DE damps exponentially while that in with LE does not. Dispersion relations and wave vector spectrums of thermal waves are determined by the phonon boundary emission, proven by theoretical analyses based on the phonon BTE. The indexes of energy mean square displacement (MSD) relation with respect to time are larger than 1 but less than 2 and decrease as time increases, showing that phonons propagate in ballistic-diffusive regime and evolve from ballistic to diffusive. Effects of the reflection boundary on thermal wave propagation are also investigated and it is found that the temperature overshooting phenomena, due to the wave propagation of heat, is significantly influenced by the properties of both emission and reflection boundaries.

Abstract:In this paper the mechanism of heat transport in metallic nanofilms under ultra-short pulsed laser heating is examined theoretically and experimentally. In order to easily understand the non-equilibrium heat transport in metallic nanofilms the study of heat transport behavior is first carried out in dielectrics. The analyses indicate that there may be two kinds of wave phenomena in dielectrics subjected to a periodic surface temperature. One is the thermal wave governed by the C–V model based hyperbolic equation and the other is the diffusive wave governed by the Fourier model based parabolic equation. According to the hyperbolic two step model for non-equilibrium heat transport, such two kinds of wave phenomena can also occur simultaneously in the metallic nanofilms under pulsed laser heating, where the diffusive wave is induced by the electron temperature oscillation at the surface due to the non-equilibrium between electrons and lattices. Unlike the propagation speed of the thermal wave, the propagation speed of the diffusive wave depends not only on the medium properties but also the period of the temperature oscillation at the boundary. Hence, the propagation speed of the diffusive wave in the electron gas may be of as high as 106ms−1, when the laser pulse duration is less than 1ps. A transient thermoreflectance (TTR) system has been built to measure the transient electron temperature responses caused by the femtosecond laser heating and a pump–probe technique is used to ensure the femtosecond temporal resolution in the experiments. Different from the commonly used front heating-front detecting (FF) method for measuring the material properties, a rear heating-front detecting (RF) method is applied, so that measuring the propagation speed of heat becomes available. The non-equilibrium heat diffusion model is used to fit the measured normalized electron temperature profiles of 27.2nm, 39.9nm and 55.5nm Au films. The best-fitted coupling factor G basically agrees with the theoretical value 2.3×1016Wm−3K−1. The propagation speed of the diffusive wave in the electron gas can be obtained by comparing the measured delay time of peak electron temperatures of Au films with different thicknesses. The average propagation speed of the temperature oscillation or diffusive wave in Au films for the range of thickness from 27.2nm to 55.5nm is equal to 8.1×105ms−1, which is close to the value predicted by the non-equilibrium heat diffusion model.

Abstract:The photothermal effect in nanomaterials, resulting from resonant optical absorption, finds wide applications in biomedicine, cancer therapy, and microscopy. Despite its prevalence, the photothermal effect in light-absorbing nanoparticles has typically been assessed using bulk measurements, neglecting near-field effects. Beyond standard imaging and therapeutic uses, nanosecond-transient photothermal effects have been harnessed for bacterial inactivation, neural stimulation, drug delivery, and chemical synthesis. While scanning probe microscopy and electron microscopy offer single-particle imaging of photothermal fields, their slow speed limits observations to milliseconds or seconds, preventing nanoscale dynamic investigations. Here, we introduce decoupled optical force nanoscopy (Dofn), enabling nanometer-scale mapping of photothermal forces by exploiting unique phase responses to temporal modulation. We employ the photothermal effect's back-action to distinguish various time frames within a modulation period. This allows us to capture the dynamic photothermal process of a single gold nanorod in the nanosecond range, providing insights into non-stationary thermal diffusion at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Practical techniques to identify heat routes at the nanoscale are required for the thermal control of microelectronic, thermoelectric, and photonic devices. Nanoscale thermometry using various approaches has been extensively investigated, yet a reliable method has not been finalized. We developed an original technique using thermal waves induced by a pulsed convergent electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode at room temperature. By quantifying the relative phase delay at each irradiated position, we demonstrate the heat transport within various samples with a spatial resolution of ~10 nm and a temperature resolution of 0.01 K. Phonon-surface scatterings were quantitatively confirmed due to the suppression of thermal diffusivity. The phonon-grain boundary scatterings and ballistic phonon transport near the pulsed convergent electron beam were also visualized.

Abstract:The present work uses two-temperature model and Cattaneo's constitutive model to study the thermomechanical responses and the size effect on energy transport during ultrafast laser heating of Au nanofilms. It is shown that the grain size effects on thermophysical properties, heat transport and thermal stresses are rather evident when the average grain diameter is less than the electron mean free path. The study on heat transport shows that there are two heat waves propagating in the lattice during nonequilibrium heating of films. It is found that the classical thermoelastic theory can not reveal the generation of the ultrafast thermal stresses during nonequilibrium heating; however, it can approximately describe the stress evolution in the stage of thermal equilibrium.
A new regime of nanoscale thermal transport: collective diffusion counteracts dissipation inefficiency

Abstract:Understanding thermal transport from nanoscale heat sources is important for a fundamental description of energy flow in materials, as well as for many technological applications including thermal management in nanoelectronics, thermoelectric devices, nano-enhanced photovoltaics and nanoparticle-mediated thermal therapies. Thermal transport at the nanoscale is fundamentally different from that at the macroscale and is determined by the distribution of carrier mean free paths in a material, the length scales of the heat sources, and the distance over which heat is transported. Past work has shown that Fourier's law for heat conduction dramatically over-predicts the rate of heat dissipation from heat sources with dimensions smaller than the mean free path of the dominant heat-carrying phonons. In this work, we uncover a new regime of nanoscale thermal transport that dominates when the separation between nanoscale heat sources is small compared with the dominant phonon mean free paths. Surprisingly, the interplay between neighboring heat sources can facilitate efficient, diffusive-like heat dissipation, even from the smallest nanoscale heat sources. This finding suggests that thermal management in nanoscale systems including integrated circuits might not be as challenging as projected. Finally, we demonstrate a unique and new capability to extract mean free path distributions of phonons in materials, allowing the first experimental validation of differential conductivity predictions from first-principles calculations.

Shear Forces and Heat Conductance in Nanoscale Junctions

Abstract:Nanoscale solid-solid contacts define a wealth of material behaviours from the electrical and thermal conductivity in modern electronic devices to friction and losses in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems. For modern ultra-high integration processor chips, power electronic devices and thermoelectrics one of the most essential, but thus far most challenging, aspects is the assessment of the heat transport at the nanoscale sized interfaces between their components. While this can be effectively addressed by a scanning thermal microscopy, or SThM, which demonstrates the highest spatial resolution to thermal transport to date, SThM quantitative capability is undermined by the poorly defined nature of the nanoscale contact between the probe tip and the sample. Here we show that simultaneous measurements of the shear force and the heat flow in the probe-sample junction shows distinct correlation between thermal conductance and maximal shear force in the junction for multiple probe-material combinations. Quantitative analysis of this correlation confirmed the intrinsic ballistic nature of the heat transport in the tip-surface nanoscale contact suggesting that they are, ultimately, composed of near-atomic sized regions. Furthermore, in analogy to the Wiedemann-Franz law, which links electrical and thermal conductivity in metals, we suggest and experimentally confirm a general relation that links shear strength and thermal conductance in nanoscale contacts via the fundamental material properties of heat capacity and heat carrier group velocity, thus opening new avenues for quantitative exploration of thermal transport on the nanoscale.

Abstract:In this study, the lattice Boltzmann method was utilized to explore the heat conduction characteristic of 3D nano-silicon thin films subjected to ultrafast laser irradiation. The impacts of boundary conditions and size effects of the film on heat conduction are analyzed. We found that under the high power of the ultrafast laser exposure, the thin film's heat conduction exhibits marked directionality, leading to substantial temperature gradients along the film's radial direction. To mitigate the pronounced temperature gradients, we introduces a novel dual laser heat source strategy, designed to equilibrate internal thermal stresses within the film. Crucially, the manipulation of the dual laser's energy distribution enables control over the film's internal temperature field, offering groundbreaking insights for the thermal management and design of nanoscale films. Furthermore, by compared the D3Q19 model with D2Q9 and D1Q3 counterparts, we found that the transition from 1D to 2D resulted in a 27.03% reduction in the peak value of the thermal wave, while the transition from 2D to 3D further reduced the peak value by 14.46%. From the point of view of wave characteristics, the 3D model can more accurately simulate the complexity of actual heat wave propagation.

Abstract:Controlling thermal transport is important for a range of devices and technologies, from phase change memories to next-generation electronics. This is especially true in nano-scale devices where thermal transport is altered by the influence of surfaces and changes in dimensionality. In superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, the thermal boundary conductance between the nanowire and the substrate it is fabricated on influences all of the performance metrics that make these detectors attractive for applications. This includes the maximum count rate, latency, jitter, and quantum efficiency. Despite its importance, the study of thermal boundary conductance in superconducting nanowire devices has not been done systematically, primarily due to the lack of a straightforward characterization method. Here, we show that simple electrical measurements can be used to estimate the thermal boundary conductance between nanowires and substrates and that these measurements agree with acoustic mismatch theory across a variety of substrates. Numerical simulations allow us to refine our understanding, however, open questions remain. This work should enable thermal engineering in superconducting nanowire electronics and cryogenic detectors for improved device performance.

Abstract:Advances in nano-electronics, nano-optics, energy harvesting materials, and nanoparticle-based photothermal therapies are motivating studies of the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures. Thus, the demands for highly sensitive and accurate thermal measurement techniques are encouraged for both fundamental studies and industrial applications. The time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method, based on an ultrafast pump-probe technique, enables high-fidelity thermal measurements at the micro/nanoscale and the observation of dynamic processes with sub-picosecond time resolution. TDTR is an optical technique, capable of measuring the thermal properties of micro/nanostructures, including thermal conductivity and interfacial thermal conductance of bulk substrates, thin films, and nanoparticles, among others. Here we review some recent developments in the state-of-the-art ultrafast pump-probe method applied to study the thermal and magnetic properties of materials at the micro- and nanometer scales. We also discuss in detail improvements to this technique by presenting several example extensions to its capabilities.

Abstract:The ultrafast response of metals to light is governed by intriguing non-equilibrium dynamics involving the interplay of excited electrons and phonons. The coupling between them gives rise to nonlinear diffusion behavior on ultrashort timescales. Here, we use scanning ultrafast thermo-modulation microscopy to image the spatio-temporal hot-electron diffusion in a thin gold film. By tracking local transient reflectivity with 20 nm and 0.25 ps resolution, we reveal two distinct diffusion regimes, consisting of an initial rapid diffusion during the first few picoseconds after optical excitation, followed by about 100-fold slower diffusion at longer times. We simulate the thermo-optical response of the gold film with a comprehensive three-dimensional model, and identify the two regimes as hot-electron and phonon-limited thermal diffusion, respectively.

Abstract:Propagation and relaxation of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconductors are of key importance for functioning of numerous nanoscale devices, enabling operation of some of them, and limiting the performance of the others. The quasiparticles heated above lattice temperature may relax locally via phonon or photon emission channels, or diffuse over appreciable distances in a nanostructure altering the functionality of their remote components. Tracing quasiparticles experimentally in real-time domain has remained the challenging task owing to their rapid dynamics. With electronic nanothermometry, based on probing of the temperature-dependent switching current of a superconducting nanobridge, we monitor heat pulse carried by a flux of nonequilibrium quasiparticles as it passes by our detector with a noise-equivalent temperature of $10\,$mK /$ \sqrt N$, where $N$ is the number of pulses probing the bridge (typically $N=10000$), and temporal resolution of a single nanosecond. The measurement provides the picture of quasiparticle diffusion in a superconducting aluminum strip and direct determination of the diffusion constant $D$ equal to $100$ cm$^2$/s with no energy dependence visible.
