Abstract:We demonstrate NRZ-to-PRZ format conversion by using silicon second-order coupled-microring resonator-based notch filters. Our experiments show that 3.6-Gbps NRZ signals are converted to PRZ pulses with 40-ps width and 8-dB extinction ratio.

Abstract:We report experimental demonstration and modeling of all-optical on-chip non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to pseudo-return-to-zero (PRZ) format conversion using narrow-band silicon microring resonator-based notch filters. Our proof-of-principle experiment using a carrier-injection-based tunable silicon microring resonator demonstrates NRZ-to-PRZ conversion at 3.6 Gbit/s. Our Fourier-transform-based modeling reveals in detail the format conversion dependence on the microring resonance Q factor, extinction ratio, phase response, and NRZ signal transition times, assuming signal format conversion of 40 Gbit/s.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 10-Gb/s format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) using the linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator. Our discussion and analysis in simulation further show that a 10-Gb/s AMI signal with good quality can be obtained by a resonator with a notch depth larger than 25 dB when the 3-dB bandwidth is 0.4 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate all optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format to frequency-shift-keying (FSK) format based on free carrier dispersion effect in a silicon mode-split microring resonator. The injection of the high-power NRZ signal generates free carriers leading to the blue shift of the spectrum when a '1' comes. Therefore, there is a selective filtering for the two probes with certain separation located at different position of the split mode according to the information carried by the NRZ signal. Then the NRZ signal is converted to the FSK format. The microring resonator features ultra-compact size with a radius of 10 μm thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The split mode can provide large and variable frequency deviation for the FSK signal. 1 Gb/s NRZ signal is successfully converted to FSK format with a frequency deviation of 40 GHz, which can find application for interconnection between a metropolitan area networks (MAN) and a passive optical network (PON) system.

Abstract:Simultaneous RZ-OOK to NRZ-OOK and RZ-DPSK to NRZ-DPSK modulation format conversion in a single silicon microring resonator with free spectral range equal to twice the signal bit rate is experimentally demonstrated for the first time at 41.6 Gb/s. By utilizing an optimized custom-made microring resonator with high coupling coefficient followed by an optical bandpass filter with appropriate bandwidth, good conversion performances for both modulation formats are achieved according to the converted signals eye diagrams and bit-error-rate measurements.

Abstract:This paper proposes a scheme for format conversion from a distorted non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal to a high-quality return-to-zero (RZ) signal, using the nonlinearity in a coupled ring-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) on a silicon chip. In this method, a distorted NRZ signal is amplified and fed into the CROW together with an RZ pulse train. The CROW performs as a nonlinear step gate for the RZ pulse train, which outputs amplitude-equalized RZ pulses inheriting the information from the NRZ signal. Clearly, the integration of the format conversion and regeneration simplifies the system. Our simulations performed at 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s verify the feasibility of our proposal.

Abstract:An all-optical format Converter based on fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated, format conversion from NRZ to PRZ can be realized by tuning the operation temperature. Operation principle for NRZ to PRZ signal is analyzed and the configuration design of the MZI is discussed. In conversion experiments for 10 Gb/s and 20 Gb/s NRZ signals, PRZ signals were achieved with good eye diagram. In spectra analysis, it can be concluded that there is much clock components in the PRZ signal. Results show that credible NRZ to PRZ format conversion can be realized through the simple fiber-based unsymmetrical MZI. The MZI can be used as a new type of all-optical format converter, and is possible to be applied in actual optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:The optical modulation format conversion is a key technique in the future all-optical communication. An optical modulation format conversion technique from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal to return-to-zero (RZ) signal is presented, based on the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect in a silicon micro-ring resonator. When a NRZ signal acting as the probe and a periodic pulse train as the pump are launched into the silicon micro-ring resonator synchronously, the power change of the pump corresponding to the rising or falling edge leads to negative or positive chirp of the probe frequency caused by XPM. The converted RZ signal can be extracted by utilizing appropriate optical band pass filters (OBPFs). The dependence of the quality of converted RZ signal on the power and pulse-width of pump is studied, as well as that on the wavelength detuning of an OBPF to the probe. It is shown that the optical modulation format conversion can be achieved in a chip by the XPM nonlinear effect of the silicon micro-ring resonator.

Abstract:We propose and numerically verify a novel scheme of all-optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) at 160 Gb/s using cascaded microring resonators (CMRR) on a single silicon chip. The conversion is based on large phase shift and flattened intensity-response characteristics in the CMRR. A continuous-wave light experiences different phase shifts controlled by the power of an input NRZ signal with an similar to 8.8-dB extinction ratio, while maintaining approximately the constant intensity. All-optical format conversion from NRZ to quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) is also demonstrated based on parallel NRZ/BPSK converters in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure. Abstract:A flexible optical NRZ-to-RZ format converter based on a time lens followed by optical filtering is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After frequency chirp linearization, 9-tone ultra-flat optical frequency comb of 25-GHz frequency spacing within 1dB power variation is obtained. By changing the shape of the following optical band-pass filter, 3.4-ps Nyquist-shaped RZ signal and 3.7-ps Gaussian-shaped RZ signal are both achieved. The sensitivity improvements at a bit error rate of 10−9 are 3.3dB and 1.7dB, respectively.

Abstract:We comprehensively analyze multiple WDM channels RZ-to-NRZ format conversion using a single microring resonator. The scheme relies on simultaneous suppression of the first order harmonic components in the spectra of all the RZ channels. An optimized silicon microring resonator with free spectral range of 100 GHz and Q value of 7900 is designed and fabricated for this purpose. Multi-channel RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is demonstrated experimentally at 50 Gbit/s for WDM channels with 200 GHz channel spacing using the fabricated device. Bit error rate (BER) measurements show very good conversion performances for the scheme.

Abstract:A format conversion from a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal to return-to-zero (RZ) signal is presented based on four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a silicon optical waveguide. When a NRZ signal acting as the probe and a periodic pulse train as the pump are launched into the silicon waveguide synchronously, the Stokes and anti-Stokes are generated by FWM and the red and blue shifts are induced by XPM in the probe spectrum. Four RZ signals can be then extracted by utilizing appropriate optical bandpass filters (OBPF). The power variations in the Stokes and anti-Stokes due to the change of pump and probe power, the relation between four RZ signal pulse widths and pump pulse width, and the influence of the wavelength detuning of pump to probe on the conversion efficiency etc. are investigated. Furthermore, the pump pulse width affects the qualities of XPM-induced RZ signals. When the pump pulse width ranges from 2 to 15 ps, four high-quality RZ signals can be obtained. And when the pulse width is larger than 15 ps, the RZ signal filtered from blue shift spectrum of the probe is of bad quality.

Abstract:A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal has been successfully generated for the first time by format conversion of a 640 Gbit/s OTDM signal from RZ to NRZ. First, a coherent 640 Gbit/s OTDM RZ signal is generated by wavelength conversion of the original incoherent OTDM signal utilizing Kerr switching in a highly nonlinear fiber. Second, RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is achieved in a specially designed silicon microring resonator with FSR of 1280 GHz, Q value of 638, high extinction ratio and low coupling loss to optical fiber. A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal with very clear eye-diagram and narrower bandwidth than both the original incoherent 640 Gbit/s and the wavelength converted coherent 640 Gbit/s RZ OTDM signals has been obtained. Bit error ratio measurements show error free (<10(-9)) performance at a received power of -30 dBm for all the OTDM channels of the 640 Gbit/s NRZ signal, with very low power penalty (<0.5 dB) and improved dispersion tolerance compared to the wavelength converted RZ case.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to achieve regenerative format conversion from a distorted non-return-to-zero-on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) signal to a return-to-zero-binary-phase-shift-keying (RZ-BPSK) signal of high quality in an integrated device. This proposal is achieved by employing an interferometer on a silicon chip with a coupled ring resonator optical waveguide embedded in one arm. In this scheme the amplified NRZ-OOK signal is injected into the converter together with a locally generated return-to-zero (RZ) pulse train at a different wavelength. Owing to the linear and nonlinear effects in the silicon waveguides, the RZ pulse train changes to a clean RZ-BPSK signal after it is cross modulated by the NRZ-OOK signal. To verify the feasibility of our scheme, we simulate the conversion at 10 Gbits/s.

Abstract:Optical regenerative nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion using a lithium niobate phase modulator and a lithium niobate intensity modulator is proposed and demonstrated. The key advantage of the proposed format converter is that the converted RZ signal has a very small pulse width, which can be multiplexed to a higher bit rate using optical time division multiplexing technology. The operation can greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the regenerative property of the proposed scheme. Besides, the format converter can also support multi-channel operation. An experiment is performed with the feasibility of the scheme demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally study both reshaping of nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signal and NRZ to pseudoreturn-to-zero (PRZ) format conversion based on self-phase modulation of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and detuning an optical bandpass filter (OBF). When an OBF with 1nm bandwidth is blue shifted by 0.8nm, the distortion of the amplified NRZ signal at 10Gbit/s is shown to be eliminated completely. When an OBF with 0.32nm bandwidth is red shifted by 0.42nm from the carrier frequency, NRZ-to-PRZ conversion at 10Gbit/s is obtained. A holding beam is used to suppress the SOA noise and improve the output extinction ratio (ER). The output ER of both the reshaped NRZ and the converted PRZ is larger than 10dB when the signal wavelength is longer than 1540nm, and an input power dynamic range from −7dBm to 2dBm is obtained at a signal wavelength of 1563.6nm. The average power of the reshaped NRZ signal is about 3dBm at an input power dynamic range of 13dB. The amplitude fluctuation of the converted PRZ signal is around 1.6dB.
