Abstract:We propose a novel and simple scheme to achieve NRZ-to-RZ format conversion and simultaneous wavelength multicasting based on a single-stage dual-arm electro-optic Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a short single mode fiber (SMF). The format conversion and wavelength multicast process are achieved by chirp compensation under the condition of generation of optical flat frequency comb. 40Gb/s NRZ-to-RZ conversion with one-to-five multiple-wavelength channel multicasting and transmission of the NRZ and the converted signals over 200km dispersion-managed fiber-link are successfully demonstrated by numerical simulation. Research results show that 40Gb/s 2ps RZ signal with wavelength-preserving can be obtained after format conversion. The converted RZ signal presents good transmission performance and can easily be multiplexed to 160Gb/s using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technology. All the multicast channels can be error free after 50km transmission. Besides, the conversion operation can also greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the retiming function of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:An all-optical format Converter based on fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated, format conversion from NRZ to PRZ can be realized by tuning the operation temperature. Operation principle for NRZ to PRZ signal is analyzed and the configuration design of the MZI is discussed. In conversion experiments for 10 Gb/s and 20 Gb/s NRZ signals, PRZ signals were achieved with good eye diagram. In spectra analysis, it can be concluded that there is much clock components in the PRZ signal. Results show that credible NRZ to PRZ format conversion can be realized through the simple fiber-based unsymmetrical MZI. The MZI can be used as a new type of all-optical format converter, and is possible to be applied in actual optical fiber communication systems.

Abstract:Optical regenerative nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion using a lithium niobate phase modulator and a lithium niobate intensity modulator is proposed and demonstrated. The key advantage of the proposed format converter is that the converted RZ signal has a very small pulse width, which can be multiplexed to a higher bit rate using optical time division multiplexing technology. The operation can greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the regenerative property of the proposed scheme. Besides, the format converter can also support multi-channel operation. An experiment is performed with the feasibility of the scheme demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 10-Gb/s format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) using the linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator. Our discussion and analysis in simulation further show that a 10-Gb/s AMI signal with good quality can be obtained by a resonator with a notch depth larger than 25 dB when the 3-dB bandwidth is 0.4 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate all optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format to frequency-shift-keying (FSK) format based on free carrier dispersion effect in a silicon mode-split microring resonator. The injection of the high-power NRZ signal generates free carriers leading to the blue shift of the spectrum when a '1' comes. Therefore, there is a selective filtering for the two probes with certain separation located at different position of the split mode according to the information carried by the NRZ signal. Then the NRZ signal is converted to the FSK format. The microring resonator features ultra-compact size with a radius of 10 μm thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The split mode can provide large and variable frequency deviation for the FSK signal. 1 Gb/s NRZ signal is successfully converted to FSK format with a frequency deviation of 40 GHz, which can find application for interconnection between a metropolitan area networks (MAN) and a passive optical network (PON) system.

Abstract:A flexible optical NRZ-to-RZ format converter based on a time lens followed by optical filtering is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After frequency chirp linearization, 9-tone ultra-flat optical frequency comb of 25-GHz frequency spacing within 1dB power variation is obtained. By changing the shape of the following optical band-pass filter, 3.4-ps Nyquist-shaped RZ signal and 3.7-ps Gaussian-shaped RZ signal are both achieved. The sensitivity improvements at a bit error rate of 10−9 are 3.3dB and 1.7dB, respectively.

Abstract:A format conversion from a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal to return-to-zero (RZ) signal is presented based on four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a silicon optical waveguide. When a NRZ signal acting as the probe and a periodic pulse train as the pump are launched into the silicon waveguide synchronously, the Stokes and anti-Stokes are generated by FWM and the red and blue shifts are induced by XPM in the probe spectrum. Four RZ signals can be then extracted by utilizing appropriate optical bandpass filters (OBPF). The power variations in the Stokes and anti-Stokes due to the change of pump and probe power, the relation between four RZ signal pulse widths and pump pulse width, and the influence of the wavelength detuning of pump to probe on the conversion efficiency etc. are investigated. Furthermore, the pump pulse width affects the qualities of XPM-induced RZ signals. When the pump pulse width ranges from 2 to 15 ps, four high-quality RZ signals can be obtained. And when the pulse width is larger than 15 ps, the RZ signal filtered from blue shift spectrum of the probe is of bad quality.

Abstract:We propose a simple and novel format conversion scheme based on a polarization modulator (PolM) and a zero-chirp intensity modulator (IM) to perform NRZ to RZ conversion for quaternary amplitude-shift keying (4-ASK) signals. Simulation shows that the scheme is capable of realizing format conversion from 20-Gbit/s NRZ-4-ASK signal to RZ-4-ASK signal with tunable pulse-width for 4-level intensity modulation format. The converted signals can transmit over a dispersion-managed fiber link from 200 km to 300 km confirming the high quality conversion. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Multiple copies of the input RZ pulses are made within bit periods, and sent to a wavelength converter to generate optical NRZ data format. Abstract:In this paper, we present the generation, the detection and the performance evaluation of a novel return-to-zero frequency shift keying (RZ-FSK) format for 40 Gb/s transmission. Non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continues-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI). A RZ-FSK signal is successfully generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM, which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half of the bit rate. The demodulation can be simply achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. By numerical simulation, two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM, and impact of the frequency tone spacing (FTS) of the generated FSK signal are discussed. The proposed scheme shows that the novel frequency modulation format offers a few transmission advantages comparing with than that of the other traditional modulation formats, such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), under varying dispersion management. The performance analysis of RZ-FSK signal in a 4 × 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is introduced. We experimentally demonstrate, transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal, clearly validating the feasibility of all optical signal processing of high-speed RZ-FSK signal. Moreover, we investigate the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), under the post-compensation management scheme. Since the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying), it can be employed in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate. It can - - also be utilized in the orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label.

Abstract:A high speed silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator is proposed based on interleaved PN junctions. This doping profile enabled both high modulation efficiency of V pi L pi = 1.5 similar to 2.0 V.cm and low doping-induced loss of similar to 10 dB/cm by applying a relatively low doping concentration of 2 x 10(17) cm(-3). Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel technique to realize non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion of a multichannel 4-ary amplitude shift keying (4-ASK) signal.The proposed format converter composed of two modulators and a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is theoretically investigated using numerical simulation as basis.Research shows that a 4-channel 20-Gb/s NRZ-4-ASK signal can be converted to a RZ-4-ASK signal simultaneously without wavelength shifting and signal quality degradation, with the converted signal multiplexed to 40 Gb/s.

Abstract:Two novel optical phase modulation formats, the staggered differential phase-shift keying (SDPSK) with return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) shape, are proposed and compared by numerical simulation for 100 Gbit/s medium-range transmission. RZ-SDPSK and CSRZ-SDPSK signals are generated by cascading two phase modulators and a dual-arm Mach-Zehnder modulator. The demodulation of two phase formats can be achieved on 1 bit rate through only one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer and a balanced receiver. The transmission performance of the extracted RZ and CSRZ clock signals are compared.

Abstract:In this letter, together with the transmitter configuration, a novel modulation code format named carrier-suppressed nonreturn-to-zero (CSNRZ) is proposed. Unlike the conventional nonreturn-to-zero code (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) signals, this optical signal has reverse-phase optical amplitude in the periods corresponding to 0 bits comparing to 1 bits. With an additional transform module at the receiver side, this reverse-phase optical power can reduce the transmission power penalty due to fiber nonlinearity. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:We propose a novel format conversion scheme, which can implement multichannel format conversion from return-to-zero (RZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) for both LP01 and LP11 simultaneously by designing a few-mode fiber Bragg grating (FM-FBG) with comb spectra. To achieve filtering for all channels of the two modes, the FM-FBG response spectra of LP11 is designed to shift with that of LP01 by the WDM-MDM channel spacing. This approach is realized by carefully selecting the specifications of the few-mode fiber (FMF) to fulfill the requirements of the effective refractive index difference between LP01 and LP11. Each single-channel outline of the FM-FBG response spectra is designed according to the algebraic difference between the RZ and NRZ spectra. Numerical results show that both LP01 and LP11 channels with 300-GHz-spaced RZ signals at 40 Gbit/s can be converted into NRZ signals simultaneously, and the converted NRZ signals have high Q-factor and their eye diagrams are clean and open.

Abstract:We propose a novel all-optical format conversion from nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) based on single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a detuning optical bandpass filter (OBF). By adopting the ultrafast SOA model associated with intraband mechanism, the 40Gb/s NRZ-to-RZ format conversion is successfully demonstrated with numerical simulation. We investigate the influence of the filter detuning, extinction ratio, conversion efficiency, output pulsewidth, and filter bandwidth. These simulation results confirm the feasibility of our scheme.
