Abstract:We comprehensively analyze multiple WDM channels RZ-to-NRZ format conversion using a single microring resonator. The scheme relies on simultaneous suppression of the first order harmonic components in the spectra of all the RZ channels. An optimized silicon microring resonator with free spectral range of 100 GHz and Q value of 7900 is designed and fabricated for this purpose. Multi-channel RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is demonstrated experimentally at 50 Gbit/s for WDM channels with 200 GHz channel spacing using the fabricated device. Bit error rate (BER) measurements show very good conversion performances for the scheme.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 10-Gb/s format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to alternate-mark-inversion (AMI) using the linear filtering effect of silicon microring resonator. Our discussion and analysis in simulation further show that a 10-Gb/s AMI signal with good quality can be obtained by a resonator with a notch depth larger than 25 dB when the 3-dB bandwidth is 0.4 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate all optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format to frequency-shift-keying (FSK) format based on free carrier dispersion effect in a silicon mode-split microring resonator. The injection of the high-power NRZ signal generates free carriers leading to the blue shift of the spectrum when a '1' comes. Therefore, there is a selective filtering for the two probes with certain separation located at different position of the split mode according to the information carried by the NRZ signal. Then the NRZ signal is converted to the FSK format. The microring resonator features ultra-compact size with a radius of 10 μm thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The split mode can provide large and variable frequency deviation for the FSK signal. 1 Gb/s NRZ signal is successfully converted to FSK format with a frequency deviation of 40 GHz, which can find application for interconnection between a metropolitan area networks (MAN) and a passive optical network (PON) system.

Abstract:A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal has been successfully generated for the first time by format conversion of a 640 Gbit/s OTDM signal from RZ to NRZ. First, a coherent 640 Gbit/s OTDM RZ signal is generated by wavelength conversion of the original incoherent OTDM signal utilizing Kerr switching in a highly nonlinear fiber. Second, RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is achieved in a specially designed silicon microring resonator with FSR of 1280 GHz, Q value of 638, high extinction ratio and low coupling loss to optical fiber. A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal with very clear eye-diagram and narrower bandwidth than both the original incoherent 640 Gbit/s and the wavelength converted coherent 640 Gbit/s RZ OTDM signals has been obtained. Bit error ratio measurements show error free (<10(-9)) performance at a received power of -30 dBm for all the OTDM channels of the 640 Gbit/s NRZ signal, with very low power penalty (<0.5 dB) and improved dispersion tolerance compared to the wavelength converted RZ case.

Abstract:We comprehensively analyze the demodulation of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) non return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signals by a single microring resonator. Simultaneous demodulation of multiple 40 Gbit/s WDM NRZ-DPSK channels is demonstrated using a single silicon microring resonator with free spectral range (FSR) of 100 GHz. Bit error measurements show very good performance for both through and drop port demodulations for all channels, and the drop port demodulation exhibits better wavelength detuning tolerance than for demodulation using a Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI).

Abstract:Silicon photonics (SiP) is a key enabling technology for high-baudrate communication. It is a key technology for future 800 Gbps and 1.6 Tbps solutions to meet the ever-increasing demands. The 800G pluggable multi-source agreement (MSA) suggests that intensity-modulated direct-detection (IM/DD) is the most sustainable way forward [1]. The high operational bandwidth of each transceiver component is essential. An ultra-compact SiP slow light modulator with record-high bandwidth of 110 GHz shows the potential [2]. Therefore, both multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and on-off keying (OOK) should be considered. SiP offers excellent production yield and has a substantial role in optical interconnects. SiP ring resonator modulators (RRM) have unique advantages like a small footprint, simple driver configuration, low power consumption, and suitability for multichannel applications. On the other hand, the SiP Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) offers differential drive benefits.

Abstract:We theoretically study the group-delay characteris- tics of a silicon microring resonator based on the coupled mode theory, and experimentally demonstrate error-free operations of an on-chip delay line using a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) microring resonator with a 20- m radius. Four signals of different modula- tionformatsareexaminedat5Gb/s,includingreturn-to-zero(RZ), carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ), return-to-zero duobi- nary (RZ-DB), and return-to-zero alternate-mark-inversion (RZ- AMI). Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the wavelength conversion based on free carrier dispersion effect induced by non-linear absorption in a silicon micro-ring resonator. The pump and signal wavelengths are set by the split resonances spaced by 0.4 nm induced by deformation in the coupling region. The results of 500 Mbps and 1Gbps are presented.

Abstract:The optical modulation format conversion is a key technique in the future all-optical communication. An optical modulation format conversion technique from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal to return-to-zero (RZ) signal is presented, based on the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect in a silicon micro-ring resonator. When a NRZ signal acting as the probe and a periodic pulse train as the pump are launched into the silicon micro-ring resonator synchronously, the power change of the pump corresponding to the rising or falling edge leads to negative or positive chirp of the probe frequency caused by XPM. The converted RZ signal can be extracted by utilizing appropriate optical band pass filters (OBPFs). The dependence of the quality of converted RZ signal on the power and pulse-width of pump is studied, as well as that on the wavelength detuning of an OBPF to the probe. It is shown that the optical modulation format conversion can be achieved in a chip by the XPM nonlinear effect of the silicon micro-ring resonator.

Abstract:A high-speed silicon modulator based on cascaded double microring resonators is demonstrated in this paper. The proposed modulator experimentally achieved 40 Gbit/s modulation with an extinction ratio of 3.9 dB. Enhancement of the modulator achieves with an ultra-high optical bandwidth of 0.41 nm, corresponding to 51 GHz, was accomplished by using cascaded double ring structure. The described modulator can provides an ultra-high-speed optical modulation with a further improvement in electrical bandwidth of the device. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversions in a 10 μm radius resonance-split silicon microring resonator based on free carrier dispersion effect. The split resonance is caused by the mutual coupling between the two countertraveling modes inside the ring resonator. Dense wavelength conversions are performed at data rates from 500 Mbytes/s to 5 Gbytes/s and a dual-channel wavelength multicasting is realized at a data rate of 1.25 Gbytes/s. The resonance splitting phenomenon opens up opportunities to convert more closely spaced wavelengths, thus effectively increasing the system capacity.
