Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:On-chip-triggered all-optical switching is a key component of ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing chips. This switching technique, the operating states of which are triggered by a remote control light, paves the way for the realization of cascaded and complicated logic processing circuits and quantum solid chips. Here, a strategy is reported to realize on-chip remotely-triggered, ultralow-power, ultrafast, and nanoscale all-optical switching with high switching efficiency in integrated photonic circuits. It is based on control-light induced dynamic modulation of the coupling properties of two remotely-coupled silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, and extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement associated with epsilon-near-zero multi-component nanocomposite achieved through dispersion engineering. Compared with previous reports of on-chip direct-triggered all-optical switching, the threshold control intensity, 560 kW/cm(2), is reduced by four orders of magnitude, while maintaining ultrafast switching time of 15 ps. This not only provides a strategy to construct photonic materials with ultrafast and large third-order nonlinearity, but also offers an on-chip platform for the fundamental study of nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.

Abstract:We report a demonstration of an ultrafast all-optical switching with unique light control effects. The all-optical switching consists of a gold film with asymmetric split rings and a silica substrate. The device effectively controls the transmission and absorption of continuous pulses in the communication band (1200-1800 nm) and short pulses with a pulse duration of 80 fs by using the interaction of two coherent beams on nano-metamaterials with a thickness of only 50 nm. The metamaterial can achieve more than 90 % output control under continuous light irradiation. When the pulse duration is 80 fs, the switching contrast ratio is greater than 3 : 1 and the modulation bandwidth is greater than 12.5 THz. Switching time can be on the order of femtosecond. This paper provides a new structure for ultra-high speed optical data processing components in coherent networks.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Ultrafast all-optical control has been a subject of wide-spread attention as a method of manipulating optical fields using light excitation on extremely short time scales. As a fundamental form of ultrafast all-optical control, all-optical switching has achieved sub-picosecond switch speeds in the visible, infrared, and terahertz spectral regions. However, due to the lack of suitable materials, ultrafast all-optical control in the ultraviolet range remains in its early stages. We demonstrate sub-picosecond all-optical switching in the ultraviolet wavelength by designing a Si 3 N 4 -ITO Fabry–Pérot resonance aligns with the edge of the interband transition region of ITO. The response time of 500 fs achieved at a pump fluence as low as 0.17 mJ/cm 2 . Notably, unlike conventional binary switches (0, 1), this biphasic all-optical switch enables the modulation of optical intensity with positive, zero, and negative Δ R / R (0, 1, −1) at the same wavelength, all achieved with a switching speed of 680 fs at a pump fluence of 0.45 mJ/cm 2 . This work establishing a new pathway for all-optical control in the ultraviolet spectrum, the biphasic switch provides an extra degree of freedom for all-optical modulation.

Abstract:All-optical switching faces new requirements for next-generation optical and quantum computing, which put a premium on low energy consumption, high speed, strong modulation ratios and high-density integration. These requirements can pose severe design challenges. Recently, we have demonstrated an alternative approach to all-optical switching design, based on the physics of topologically protected optical bound states in the continuum, that can break some of these challenges.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, materials with periodic dielectric structures, are able to control the propagation states of photons owing to the so-called photonic-bandgap effect1. Nonlinear photonic crystals, whose refractive-index distribution can be tuned optically, have been used to demonstrate all-optical switching2. However, a high pump intensity is usually required because the nonlinear optical coefficient of conventional materials is relatively small3. Here we report ultrafast and low-power photonic-crystal all-optical switching based on strong optical nonlinearity enhancement due to excited-state interelectron transfer. Compared with the case without nonlinearity enhancement, the switching operation power is reduced by four orders of magnitude while the ultrafast response time, of the order of a picosecond, is maintained. This provides a strategy for constructing photonic materials with large nonlinearity and studying ultrafast low-power integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:I analyze an all-optical switching scheme in a cavity QED system consisting of multiple three-level atoms confined in a cavity mode. A control laser coupled to the atoms from free space induces quantum interference in the coupled cavity-atom system and performs all optical switching of the cavity-atom polaritons. When the cavity is tuned far away from the atomic resonance, the cavity-atom polariton consists of nearly pure photonic excitation and then the scheme can be used for photon switching at low light intensities.

Abstract:We investigate all-optical switching and wavelength conversion based on ultrafast nonlinearities in a multi-quantum-well semiconductor optical amplifier. We present a rate equation model that accounts for two-photon absorption, free-carrier absorption, self- and cross phase modulation, carrier heating, spectral, spatial hole burning and self- and cross polarization modulation. We demonstrate optical AND gate operation using a semiconductor optical amplifier placed in an asymmetric March-Zehnder interferometer and we show that the gate can be operated using 800 fJ optical pulses with duration of 200 fs. We also investigate wavelength conversion based on ultrafast nonlinear polarization rotation. We found a conversion efficiency of 12 dB for control pulse energies of 10 pJ.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate and discuss the response time, switching contrast, and pump power of all-optical switching in a nonlinear photonic crystal structure with high quality factor (high-Q) cavity. For the response time of all-optical switching, the drop and rise time are considered, respectively. Moreover, we find that when the duration of pump pulse is shorter than the lifetime, the response curve of all-optical switching is asymmetric, and the drop time is determined by both the lifetime of high-Q cavity and duration of pump pulse, and the rise time is mainly determined by lifetime of high-Q cavity. In contrast, when the duration of pump pulse is much longer than the lifetime, the dynamic response curve is symmetric, and both the drop and rise time are determined by the duration of pump pulse. On the other hand, the pump power can be significantly reduced by using a setup where the probe beam is located at the high-Q cavity mode with very narrow linewidth. Furthermore, if the central wavelength of pump pulse is also set to match with this or another high-Q cavity mode, the pump power will be reduced further due to the large field enhancement within the photonic crystal, and more importantly there is no extra prolonged response time of all-optical switching. By this method, the pump power as low as 210 KW/cm2 is observed in our model structure with the quality factor of only 32 096 for the ordinary polystyrene material.

Abstract:We report experimental observations of interference between three-photon and one-photon excitations, and phase control of light attenuation/transmission in a four-level system. Either constructive interference or destructive interference can be obtained by varying the phase and/or frequency of a weak control laser. The interference enables absorptive switching of one field by another field at different frequencies and ultra-low light levels.

Abstract:We report on an all-optical switching in a double ∧ four-level atom-cavity system both theoretically and experimentally. In this system, an extra coherence between two ground states is induced by two coupling lasers, thus the loss of the cavity field decreases. Then, we can use one weak field to control another weak field at low light levels. Compared to the three-level atom-cavity system, the power of the switching laser can be much weaker in the four-level atom-cavity system.
