Abstract:With the widespread application and diversified demands of micro electro mechanical systems(MEMS),it is difficult to meet the design requirements of non-standard for the current design method of structure combination in the parametric elements library.Therefore,a method of mapping extraction and equivalent approximation of multi-granularity macro-model which supports non-standard structure design is presented.In the MEMS design level and flow of multi-granularity macro-modeling,the global matrix which describes the system is extracted through association and combination of nodes of complete finite element model of the MEMS device.The precise system model based on the low-order ordinary differential equations is then achieved.The large-scale sparse symmetric matrix is saved via one-dimensional variable bandwidth storage.The equivalent approximation model is obtained by Lagrange polynomial fitting and generalized minimal residuals.The fidelity relationships between the input and output of the system of the non-standard structure are built to connect the models of connector level and system level.The product continuous is finally realized via design iteration.The independent prototype system using ACIS as geometry modeling kernel is developed to verify the proposed method by a digital light procession micro-mirror.The test results prove that the present design ability is extended from limited simple devices in element library to the complex,strange,non-standard structure.It has important significance to improve efficiency and quality of the design of MEMS.

Abstract:A domain decomposition scheme based on the equivalence principle, similar to Huygens' principle, for integral equation solvers and the method of moments is introduced. The equivalence principle allows the replacement of unknown currents distributed in a volume in space by equivalence currents residing on the surface that bounds the volume. It also allows the dissociation of the solution of one region from that of another region. In this manner, problems of high complexity can be encapsulated by surfaces of simpler shapes using less unknowns. It can aid in parallel algorithms, reusability of solutions, as well as improving the condition number of a matrix system when disparate mesh or adaptive mesh are needed. The challenge arises when an equivalence surface intercepts a current-carrying conductor, because the breakup of the current into separate pieces gives rise to charge singularity. A junction basis can be used to mitigate this singularity. However, a better solution is to introduce a tap basis to model the current that intercepts with the equivalence surfaces. Using this scheme, the current continuity is conserved and the singularity of the charges is avoided. The solution is shown to be accurate.

Abstract:The equivalence principle algorithm is introduced in this paper to solve multiscale problems in the electromagnetic modeling of circuit problems. In these problems, low frequency circuit physics coexists with high frequency wave physics that makes the matrix equation ill-conditioned. As a domain-decomposition based algorithm, the equivalence principle algorithm casts the entire domain into different parts based on their physical properties. Each part is solved individually by introduction of virtual equivalence surfaces. Moreover, the interactions among domains are still modeled accurately that captures the electromagnetic wave propagation. With this algorithm and powered up with multilevel fast multipole algorithm, large multiscale problems can be solved on a single computer efficiently.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel single-source equivalence principle algorithm is presented. In the traditional equivalence principle algorithm (EPA), double sources, which are equivalence electric and magnetic currents, are constructed on the equivalence surface to replace the currents of the enclosed scatterers. According to the extinction theorem, electric current is related to magnetic current. Therefore, only electric or magnetic current, called single-source, is the final unknown on the equivalence surface. The accuracy of two kinds of single-source EPA is investigated. Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA) is used to accelerate the couplings between equivalence surfaces. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Alpha-SIM: A Quick 3D Geometry Model Simplification Approach to Support Aircraft EWIS Routing

Abstract:Routing design of aircraft Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) is time-consuming and error-prone. A solution, which automatically routes the EWIS inside the aircraft Digital MockUp (DMU), has been proposed and presented in the previous publications. The DMU, however, includes over-detailed features, which hardly influence the routing results but significantly increase the geometry-involved computational time thus hampering any automated routing. These features cannot be easily and efficiently suppressed. Therefore, a quick 3 D geometry simplification method, named Alpha-SIM, is proposed to enable a quick simplification of the airframe components included in the DMU and improve the benefit of the aforementioned automatic EWIS routing approach. The method is inspired by Descriptive Geometry techniques and the 3 D modelling approach using 2 D sketches, and aims at removing very detailed and/or internal features while preserving the intuitive notional shape of the given CAD model. The intuitive notional shape is represented by a 3 D point cloud of the model outer boundary and their 2 D projections on user-defined planes. These 2 D projections are then processed such to generate a set of 2 D profiles, called Alpha-Shapes, which are used, eventually, to re-build the 3 D model of the DMU components in a simplified/de-featured manner. By controlling the density of the 3 D points and the Alpha value to generate the 2 D profiles from the point projections, various geometric approximation levels can be achieved. The results of the test cases demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method on the geometry simplification for automatic EWIS routing.

Abstract:Techniques for "smart" 3D EM modeling are briefly recollected and described. By applying these techniques to a 3-layer printed dipole antenna, which is coaxially fed through finite sized reflector, the number of unknowns in MoM/SIE approach is reduced for an order of magnitude with negligible loss of accuracy. Such minimalistic model enabled full wave simulation of array of 28 by 28 elements at PC computer.

Abstract:In this paper, a light weight architecture modeling approach based on feature wires is proposed, which is called Fe-Wires. The approach is a procedural modeling method based on shape grammar. In the method, 3D models are reconstructed based on inputting and manipulating feature wires of architecture objects to overcome the interaction weakness of original rule-based approaches. To interactively tuning complex architecture models, we present a global deformation model which uses axis-aligned spring constraints. Different from previous nonlinear optimization methods, our approach only need to solve a convex quadratic problem which can be efficiently solved in real time. The presented experiments show that our method can be applied on the real applications for interactive modeling inner and outer part of buildings. © by Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Abstract:In this paper, an updated equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) is presented. Compared with previous work by the authors, the high-order point sampling scheme is used to reduce the high-frequency noise in field projection. An updated tap basis scheme is introduced to simplify the formulation. With these schemes, the equivalence principle algorithm can be used to solve multiscale problems by substituting the oversampled region with a proper equivalence surface. Moreover, EPA can also be accelerated using attached unknown accelerations and multilevel fast multipole algorithm so that large multiscale problems can be solved efficiently.

Abstract:Computational electromagnetic (CEM) simulations have become an indispensable tool in analyzing and designing modern electromagnetic system. However, many challenges arise when applying CEM solvers to real world problems. Multiscale phenomena are one of them. The existence of both wave and circuit physics in such problems introduces large and small eigenvalues simultaneously that causes the resulting matrix equation ill-conditioned. Equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) is essentially a domain decomposition scheme to solve multiscale problems. It is based on equivalence principle and integral equations [1]. By the introduction of virtual equivalence surfaces to enclose the regions with fine features, low frequency physics is isolated from high frequency physics. This results in a better conditioned matrix equation with fewer unknowns. To model continuous current flow in and out of the equivalence surface, a tap basis scheme was introduced. This scheme avoids the computation of current singularities at the cut and can be incorporated with EPA naturally. Moreover, to improve the accuracy of field projections, a high-order quadrature point-sampling scheme was used to describe the currents on equivalence surfaces. This scheme samples the currents directly at points on the equivalence surfaces and integrates using high-order quadrature rules. By using this, EPA is shown to be accurate.

Abstract:In this paper, the plane-pair partial element equivalent circuit method coupled with the field equivalence principle is developed and applied to calculate the radiated fields of multilayer power planes. The proposed method can be used to solve near-field and far-field radiation problems for multilayer parallel-plane structures with decoupling capacitors. The proposedmethod is validated by full-wave simulation and experiment. In addition, the proposed method achieves ten times higher computational efficiency than the full-wave simulation.

Abstract:A system-level modeling approach, which combines the MoM (method of moments) and the SMM (scattering matrix method) has been presented for the modeling of advanced electronic packages (Oo et al., 2007). The focus of this paper is on addressing the problems of multilayered multiple via coupling and finite ground effects by the SMM method. Significant extensions of the SMM method facilitate the modeling of coupling among densely populated vias in multilayered packages with finite power/ground planes. The proposed approach is suitable for the signal and power integrity, and even EMI analysis of packages at system level.

Abstract:This paper reported the latest development of the modal decomposition with T-matrix method for accurate and efficient analysis of coupling of multiple vias in finite-sized multilayered parallel-plate structures. A novel boundary modeling method, named the frequency-dependent cylinder layer (FDCL), is proposed to resolve the open problem of boundary modeling associated with modal expansion methods. Moreover, a generalized T matrix model derived by the mode matching technique, is created to characterize the coupling effect for vias penetrating more than one layer in a multilayered structure. Both numerical and experimental verifications are presented to validate the new modeling methods. The above method has been incorporated into the simulation tool developed recently by us.

Abstract:The equivalence principle replaces currents distributed in a volume by equivalent currents residing on the bounding surface. It also disassociates the current solutions in different regions. The work reported here exploits the equivalence principle to generate a domain decomposition algorithm for integral equation solvers. The equivalence principle algorithm encapsulates highly complex bodies by simple surfaces, thereby facilitating parallelization, solution reusability, and even improving matrix conditioning. Conventional basis used to discretize the integral equations breaks down when an equivalence surface intercepts a current-carrying conductor. A tap basis scheme is proposed to accurately model the currents at the intersections to conserve the continuity and avoid charge singularities. Moreover, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm is used to accelerate the equivalence principle algorithm so that large multiscale problems can he solved efficiently.
A system-level equivalent circuit method for the electrical performance modeling of electronic packages

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a system-level field-circuit method for the signal integrity and power integrity simulation of power distribution networks inside the electronic packages. The electromagnetic field inside the power distribution network is expressed in the modal field distribution. The modal field is then decomposed into the parallel plate mode and transmission mode, which are related to the power-ground planes and signal traces respectively. Integral equations are created for these two modes. Through the discretization of the integral equations, network ports are defined between the power/ground planes and signal traces. In this way, their equivalent networks are extracted through the moments method solution of the integral equations. Finally, these two equivalent networks are combined together with the equivalent circuit of the through-hole via to provide the whole circuit model of the power distribution network. Through numerical examples, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are verified.

Abstract:This letter proposes a hybrid method for the modeling of multilayer planar structures with locally inhomogeneous penetrable objects. By using the equivalence principle, the original problem can be decomposed into external and internal problems, which are formulated by the mixed-potential integral equation (MPIE) method and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, respectively. Instead of directly implementing the continuity boundary conditions, an iterative approach is used to solve the hybrid FDTD-MPIE problem. Numerical results are presented to validate the hybrid method.
Advanced Parallel Algorithm for System-Level EMC Modeling of High-Speed Electronic Package

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for EMC simulation of electronic package integration. This algorithm is based on hybridizing method of moments with analytical method, modal expansion technique. The entire electronic package domain is divided into two networks: the signal distribution network and the power distribution network. The signal distribution network is simulated using the method of moments, where the equivalent RLCG (resistance, inductance, capacitance and conductance) parameters of the signal traces in the signal layers are extracted. The power distribution network is simulated by using the modal expansion technique, where the equivalent circuit of the power distribution network is obtained. It is straightforward to substitute all the extracted equivalent circuit parameters into a SPICE-like simulator to simultaneously perform the signal and power integrities analyses. With the proposed method, the system-level EMC modeling of the package can be performed efficiently. Numerical examples demonstrate that this approach is able to provide fast yet accurate simulation for signal and power integrities analysis of multilayered electronic packages. In order to further enhance the simulation efficiency, the parallel process of the proposed method is implemented in our institutepsilas high performance computer.
Hierarchical Structural Analysis Method for Complex Equation-oriented Models

Abstract:Structural analysis is a method for verifying equation-oriented models in the design of industrial systems. Existing structural analysis methods need flattening of the hierarchical models into an equation system for analysis. However, the large-scale equations in complex models make structural analysis difficult. Aimed to address the issue, this study proposes a hierarchical structural analysis method by exploring the relationship between the singularities of the hierarchical equation-oriented model and its components. This method obtains the singularity of a hierarchical equation-oriented model by analyzing a dummy model constructed with the parts from the decomposing results of its components. Based on this, the structural singularity of a complex model can be obtained by layer-by-layer analysis according to their natural hierarchy. The hierarchical structural analysis method can reduce the equation scale in each analysis and achieve efficient structural analysis of very complex models. This method can be adaptively applied to nonlinear-algebraic and differential-algebraic equation models. The main algorithms, application cases and comparison with the existing methods are present in this paper. The complexity analysis results show the enhanced efficiency of the proposed method in the structural analysis of complex equation-oriented models. Compared with the existing methods, the time complexity of the proposed method is improved significantly.

Abstract:In this paper, a SPICE-compatible full-wave equivalent circuit model, based on the method of moments, for three dimensional printed circuit structure has been developed. It could be easily integrated into any circuit-based simulator to analyze the effects of the printed circuit board interconnects on high-speed circuit performance. The predicted results using the method proposed in this paper and the experimental results are in good agreement.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new PO-MoM hybrid method based on the equivalence principle for the object that can be decomposed into different isolated parts. Each part can be solved by MoM or PO according to its local property. The unknowns on every subscatterer are transferred to its surrounding equivalent surface with a new scheme, and the intersections between different parts are also considered by their equivalent surfaces. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better efficiency and reasonable agreement with the results by the MoM.
