Abstract:Graphene-doped polymer nanofibers are fabricated by taper drawing of solvated polyvinyl alcohol doped with liquid-phase exfoliated graphene flakes. Nanofibers drawn this way typically have diameters measured in hundreds of nanometers and lengths in tens of millimeters; they show excellent uniformity and surface smoothness for optical waveguiding. Owing to their tightly confined waveguiding behavior, light–matter interaction in these subwavelength-diameter nanofibers is significantly enhanced. Using approximately 1350-nm-wavelength femto-second pulses, we demonstrate saturable absorption behavior in these nanofibers with a saturation threshold down to 0.25 pJ pulse −1 (peak power ∼1.3 W). Additionally, using 1064-nm-wavelength nanosecond pulses as switching light, we show all-optical modulation of a 1550-nm-wavelength signal light guided along a single nanofiber with a switching peak power of ∼3.2 W.
Practical Evaluation of Polymer Waveguides for High-Speed and Meter-Scale On-Board Optical Interconnects

Abstract:We comprehensively evaluated optical characteristics, environmental stabilities, fiber optics compatibilities, and high-speed performances of multimode polymer waveguides fabricated in small batch with a length of 946 mm. The waveguides exhibit a low transmission loss (0.046 dB/cm at a wavelength of 850 nm), low interchannel crosstalk (<= -58 dB), and a large misalignment tolerance (+/- 20 mu m) between fiber and waveguide. The waveguides show good environmental stability and the increase of propagation loss is as small as 0.005 dB/cm and 0.004 dB/cm after a 1000-h ageing test and five solder reflow cycles, respectively. The waveguides have good compatibilities w ith fibers having different core diameters and index profiles that may be encountered in the real application environment. High-speed transmission performances were evaluated using both nonreturn to zero (NRZ) transmission at data rates of 25 Gb/s and 30 Gb/s, and PAM4 transmission at data rates of 20 Gb/s and 56 Gb/s, respectively. There is no obvious degradation on the eye diagram due to the insertion of the waveguide. Error free transmission were successfully obtained for NRZ transmission at data rates of both 25 Gb/s and 30 Gb/s. The BER for PAM4 transmission reached a level of 10(-4) at data rates of both 10 Gbaud (20 Gb/s) and 28 Gbaud (56 Gb/s), which is well below the forward error correction limitation. Moreover, it is the bandwidth of the test equipment rather than the polymer waveguide itself that limits the high-speed transmission performances in our experiments. The results demonstrate that the polymer waveguides are good candidates for high-speed and meter-scale on-board optical interconnect applications.

Abstract:We have observed nonlinear absorption in spin-coated poly(4,6-decadiyne-1, 10-diolbis {[(n-butoxycarbonyl)methyl]urethane}) [poly(3BCMU)] polydiacetylene channel waveguides at different wavelengths in the near-infrared. Intensity dependent absorption coefficients, α2 and α3, have been determined by measurements of the intensity dependent transmission. The implications of nonlinear absorption for all-optical device applications in this material are discussed.

Abstract:Optical waveguiding in dielectric planar ion-exchanged glass waveguides coated with nonlinear polydiacetylenes is studied. Two polydiacetylenes were used in order to measure intensity-dependent guided waves, but a nonlinear optical response can only be seen for one, namely p-3BCMU. For the TM2-mode the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of p-3BCMU is determined to be Rex (3) = -3.10−19 m2/V2 at 1.064 μm using both shift in modenumber and nonlinear coupling.

Abstract:Using a 4-mm-long compact silicon-nanowire waveguide, we demonstrated nonlinear-optic effects such as the spectral broadening of optical short pulses due to self-phase modulation and nonlinear transmittance due to two-photon absorption. At a 12W input power level, we observed a 1.5-pi nonlinear phase shift and a strong saturation of optical output power in a sample. We also estimated the third-order nonlinear coefficient 112 and the two-photon absorption coefficient beta, and compared them with those previously reported.

Abstract:With progress in fabrication technology, integrated photonics plays an increasingly important role in highspeed optical communications, from monolithic transmitters and receivers for advanced optical modulation formats to on-chip subsystems for optical signal processing. We review our recent work on the highly tailorable physical properties of silicon waveguides for communication and signal processing applications, using slot structures. Controllable chromatic dispersion, nonlinearity, and polarization properties of the waveguides are presented, and the enabled wideband wavelength conversion, optical tunable delay, and signal processing of polarization-multiplexing data channels are discussed.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers, for example polydiacetylenes and polythiophenes, possess a relatively large nonlinear refractive index together with an ultrafast relaxation time of this nonlinearity. In the infrared wavelength regions interesting for optical communication they show enhanced response due to multi-photon resonances. By comparing optically similar, but chemically different materials qualitative structure-properties relations can be derived with a view to improving the material response. Using conventional thin film deposition techniques known from microelectronics optical waveguiding structures can be fabricated, leading to the development of polymeric all- optical switching devices.

Abstract:Optical communication using the 2 μm wavelength band is attracting growing attention for the sake of mitigating the information ‘capacity crunch’ on the way, where on-chip nonlinear waveguides can play vital roles. Here, silicon-rich nitride (SRN) ridge waveguides with different widths and rib heights are fabricated and measured. Linear characterizations show a loss of ~2 dB/cm of the SRN ridge waveguides and four-wave mixing (FWM) experiments with a continuous wave (CW) pump reveal a nonlinear refractive index of ~1.13 × 10−18 m2/W of the SRN material around the wavelength 1950 nm. With the extracted parameters, dimensions of the SRN ridge waveguides are optimally designed for improved nonlinear performances for the 2 μm band, i.e., a maximal nonlinear figure of merit (i.e., the ratio of nonlinearity to loss) of 0.0804 W−1 or a super-broad FWM bandwidth of 518 nm. Our results and design method open up new possibilities for achieving high-performance on-chip nonlinear waveguides for long-wavelength optical communications.
Nonlinear Absorption and Refraction in Poly 3-BCMU Polydiacetylene Optical Waveguides in the Low Loss Fibre Communications Windows

Abstract:The nonlinear susceptibility of the first soluble polydiacetylenes was measured by Chance1 in 1980, and poly(3BCMU) and poly(4BCMU) were among these. Most of the work done on χ(3) in poly(3BCMU) and poly(4BCMU) since have been measurements taken in solutions of the polymers, or in gels of the polymers in nonsolvents. These materials can be processed into thin films by spin-coating from concentrated solutions. This forms an amorphous film where the chains are aligned randomly in the plane of the film. It is not surprising therefore to see the published values of n2 for these amorphous films are an order of magnitude lower than for the crystalline poly(PTS), as the polarized electric field is not interacting with the maximum number of delocalised electrons. The work of Hsu2 shows that if the poly(BCMU) films are deposited with the chains aligned the nonlinearity increases by a factor of 5 on the spin coated films and approaches the value of n2 for poly(PTS). The work of Rochford3 and Townsend4 have been the only channel waveguide experiments in poly(4-BCMU). No channel waveguide experiments to measure n2 have been reported in poly(3-BCMU).

Abstract:Optical technologies call for waveguide networks featuring high integration densities, low losses, and simple operation. Here, we present polymer waveguides fabricated from a negative tone photoresist via two-photon-lithography in direct laser writing, and show a detailed parameter study of their performance. Specifically, we produce waveguides featuring bend radii down to 40 {\mu}m, insertion losses of the order of 10 dB, and loss coefficients smaller than 0.81 dB/mm, facilitating high integration densities in writing fields of 300 {\mu}m x 300 {\mu}m. A novel three-dimensional coupler design allows for coupling control as well as direct observation of outputs in a single field of view through a microscope objective. Finally, we present beam-splitting devices to construct larger optical networks, and we show that the waveguide material is compatible with the integration of quantum emitters.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical interconnects have attracted significant research interest for use in short-reach board-level optical communication links in supercomputers and data centres. Multimode polymer waveguides in particular constitute an attractive technology for on-board optical interconnects as they provide high bandwidth, offer relaxed alignment tolerances, and can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, the continuing improvements in bandwidth performance of optical sources make it important to investigate approaches to develop high bandwidth polymer waveguides. In this paper, we present dispersion studies on a graded-index (GI) waveguide in siloxane materials designed to deliver high bandwidth over a range of launch conditions. Bandwidth-length products of >70 GHzxm and ~65 GHzxm are observed using a 50/125 um multimode fibre (MMF) launch for input offsets of +/- 10 um without and with the use of a mode mixer respectively; and enhanced values of >100 GHzxm are found under a 10x microscope objective launch for input offsets of ~18 x 20 um^2. The large range of offsets is within the -1 dB alignment tolerances. A theoretical model is developed using the measured refractive index profile of the waveguide, and general agreement is found with experimental bandwidth measurements. The reported results clearly demonstrate the potential of this technology for use in high-speed board-level optical links, and indicate that data transmission of 100 Gb/s over a multimode polymer waveguide is feasible with appropriate refractive index engineering.

Abstract:Novel photonic nanowires were fabricated using low-index materials and tested in the near-infrared spectrum to assess their nonlinear optical properties. In this work, we argue the need to redefine the standard nonlinear figure of merit in terms of nonlinear phase shift and optical transmission for a given propagation distance. According to this new metric, our devices largely outperform all established platforms for devices with a linear footprint in the range of 50 to 500 um, which is demonstrated to be an outstanding technological gap. For 85 fs pulses, with carrier wavelength at 1480nm and sub-uW power levels, a spectral broadening exceeding 80% of the initial bandwidth was recorded over a propagation length of just 50 um. Leveraging on CMOS-compatible processes and well-established materials such as silicon, silica, and indium tin oxide, our devices bring great promise for developing alternative all-optical devices with unparalleled nonlinear performances within the aforementioned range.

Abstract:Waveguiding films of the highly soluble polycarbazolydiacetylene polyDCHD-HS were prepared by spin coating characterized at different wavelengths. 5 dB/ cm propagation losses were observed at 1321 nm. Measurements of the third order nonlinearity at 1064 nm with surface plasmon resonance method gave the value χ(3)=i4.4×10-17+3.5×10-18 m2/V2.

Abstract:For the first time it is demonstrated that permanent optical waveguides can be self-written in a solid acrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol photopolymer material. The novel (to our knowledge) technique used to prepare the polymeric medium used is described. It is demonstrated that the resulting waveguides formed can be used to guide different wavelengths. A standard theoretical model is used to predict both the evolution of the light intensity distribution and the channel formation inside the material during the exposure. The experimental results and the numerical simulations are compared, and good agreement is obtained.
